Why God Repents and Changes His Mind in the Bible

Let's get a handle on the various passages where the Bible says that God repents, relents or changes His mind. Personally, I found this study very rewarding and I hope it blesses you as well. Someone came up after I taught this study and shared something with me that I think might add to the content in this message. They said something like, "God is jealous, but not like man's jealousy. God has wrath, but not like man's wrath. And in a similar way God repents but not in the same way or with the same meaning as when man does it." I thought this was worth adding here for you.

It's a fact of the text that God changes His mind. It's weird to try to argue against that. It's almost like you have a prior commitment to a philosophy which disagrees with the Biblical text and are twisting Scripture to make it fit. Food for thought

This makes sense! I’m reading about Rahab and this can explain why God spared Rahab and her father’s household, even though God charged Joshua to destroy Jericho. God does NOT contradict himself. He is merciful. He wants to end corruption and desires people to turn to Him. God is AMAZING!

@@nikao7751keep up, man. In your OP you claimed that people say God changes His mind in a "knee-jerk" reactionary way. That's strawmanning the position, because people who argue that *God changing His mind is a fact of the text* would never characterize it in that way. We would say rather that God updates His chosen course of action as circumstances change, since He is holy and knows what's best in any given situation, and situations in the real world are always changing.

@macolyis You have no way of knowing anything about me except that I think your conversation with Millet has been kind of nutty, and I briefly alluded to that. Yet you proceed to enumerate all sorts of various, specific sins that I am supposedly guilty of. From my perspective, your religious convictions are pretty outlandish. I don't agree with everything Millet said either, but you are really way out there. I don't think you have a demon, and I don't think you're crazy in the legal sense that you're a danger to yourself or others. But your beliefs are sort of nuts, and I think you might do well to listen to others, before presuming to know everything, particularly the sins of others. If you seemed to me like a level-headed guy, I might like to dialog with you on some points you brought up. But I don't. I do wish you the best, and thank you again for brightening my morning. I had a Pastor that his daughter wanted to become an actress. Well she wanted to enter auditions. My pastor, knowing that God had other plans for her, and knowing the filth and moral risk in that industry had to support her in her decisions. Well long story short she returned devasted that she confronted rejection, and immoral offerings that it made my pastor sad with regret that he allowed her to enter this experience. But it was a regret in pain and not in action. My pastor would let her do it all over again lest she wouldn't learn for herself.

IF/THEN. God surely does love us and he himself does not change - we must. Good word for tonight. Thank you.

It was, (repent), a very poor word choice in regard to the Holy One. No one Loves more than God and no fault can be found in Him. God does show mercy. When the people of Nineveh from the greatest to least reacted with repentance to Gods message of destruction God relented and showed mercy. But Gods judgments are righteous. Jonah was angry at that. But God replied, "And should I not have concern for the great city of Nineveh, in which there are more than a hundred and twenty thousand people who cannot tell their right hand from their left--and also many animals?"" Interesting Jesus brought this up in His rebuke of Israelite's. The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and now something greater than Jonah is here. Repentance is a change of heart to choose the right and reject the wrong. People who receive light will be held accountable by God if they continue in their sin. For the gospel message is a light to all nations with the hope of eternal life as well as the wrath of God for those who love to do evil and refuse to repent. With light comes accountability. God warns and warns upfront but in the end ,just as He did with Israel, who refused His words and would not listen to Him, He showed Himself Holy. Likewise Rev 11 will be a last sign that can't be mistaken (1260 days) before the beast is in the world and the great tribulation takes place. If anyone in those days has even a shred of love for God they will believe and repent but those who take joy in the murder of Gods two witnesses will be deceived into believing the lie of the beast and will be condemned with the beast.

It’s good to see a young man so steeped in Christian apologetics and not willing to compromise but to search for the answers within scripture as scripture proves scripture.👍👏😍 God changing His mind is really not about changing His mind it’s about allowing the people mentioned in scripture to participate by having a discussion with them, this is why God created humans so that He could have a relationship with us. Conversing, discussing, communicating is what helps us all to have a relationship with God/Jesus Christ so we can get to know Him, His ways, His plan, His heart and love Him that’s what relationship is about. Everything about scripture is to get to know God/Jesus Christ that’s the beauty of it.👍🤭🤫

Repenting does not automatically equal repenting from sin it just means to turn one way from another way that you may have previously been. This has been one of my biggest pet peeves with people who don't understand that the word repent in the Bible is not referring to just repent from sins. It's suggested you should repent from your sins but repenting is really just turning away from something whether it be a decision you were going to make and then you made another decision or whatever the case but doesn't necessarily include sin every time it is used

Chuck Butler you reminded me of a scripture. “For we know in part and we prophesy in part. But when that which is perfect has come, then that which is in part will be done away.” ‭‭I Corinthians‬ ‭13:9-10‬ ‭NKJV‬‬ Also regarding knowledge and teachers, another scripture comes to mind. “But you, do not be called ‘Rabbi’; for One is your Teacher, the Christ, and you are all brethren. Do not call anyone on earth your father; for One is your Father, He who is in heaven. And do not be called teachers; for One is your Teacher, the Christ. But he who is greatest among you shall be your servant. And whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.” ‭‭Matthew‬ ‭23:8-12‬ ‭NKJV‬‬ So yeah, no man shall be looked on as a teacher but rather a brother (or sister) who is also trying to find their way. So it’s very healthy to keep an open mind and listen intently on what other people bring to the table. Our differences may hurt or afflict us because of how important our faith is but we should be careful of speaking under self righteousness. Discern Christ’s teachings and nurturing one another is the best thing we can do regarding understanding scripture. This is how we can grow together in our faith of Christ.

demi- dogg God answers prayers in the Bible, what are you stating?
@solideogloria3602
@solideogloria3602 4 года назад
@demi- dogg Scientific studies miss the point of prayer, as if God must act when people pray. He has no obligation to and He only answers if it is His will. Trying to study and measure prayer in a scientific experimental way is detestable and God is not bound to act simply because people are doing a study on prayer. 1 Timothy 6:20-21, "O Timothy, guard the deposit entrusted to you. Avoid the irreverent babble and contradictions of what is falsely called “knowledge", for by professing it some have swerved from the faith..."
@solideogloria3602
@solideogloria3602 4 года назад
@demi- dogg Cool, I'll take on your challenge. Forgive me if I sound confrontational, I do not mean to. 1. That is utterly fallacious. Why is supernatural called supernatural? Because it is beyond the natural; literally from the Latin word "supernaturalis" meaning "beyond nature". Therefore, you cannot measure what is supernatural by using the same methods you would use to measure the natural. It wouldn't be supernatural if you could treat it like something natural. 2. "What's the Harm?" proves nothing. I didn't say God answers all prayers, did I? The frequency of the answer does not mean it does not happen. That's like saying "Oh, only a few people have gone to outer space, that means it doesn't exist." 3. Love how you call me incredibly arrogant for trying to speak for God when you yourself said He doesn't answer prayers anymore by saying "Maybe he used to, then." Let me quote you a verse about prayer. 1John 5:14-15 "This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us-whatever we ask-we know that we have what we asked of him." Huh. It doesn't seem like God answers all prayers, does it? As I said, if it is according to His will, He will do it. We are not the gods and masters. He is not bound to our will, we are bound to His. 4. And why would God need to adapt? He is perfect. Does a perfect God need to adapt? If He needs to change for the better, then He was not perfect. Humans need to change because we are not perfect. For us, to change is a good thing. For God, it's not needed. 5. If I made a knife and sold it to a murderer, would I be at fault for the murder? If someone hit somebody with their car, is it the car manufacturer's fault too? Maybe it's the parent's fault for producing their child? It is wrong to insist that God is not good because He made Satan. Free will exists and God did not force Satan to be evil, did He? Therefore, it was Satan's fault and he bears the full responsibility of his rebellion.

Man's Free Will is the Greatest Gift of God to Man, second only to Life.The depth of His Love is unfathomable when we begin to realize how much Divine disappointment, repentance,grief, regret, change of mind, etc that He willingly exposed Himself to, just so we can have our Free Choice.Could He have done it your way?Yes, but He didn't!

Been reading that whole section of the bible about King David and this was perfect timing as I remember reading about God repenting about Saul and I knew you had covered this topic and meant to listen to it. So blessed by this! And that flashlight analogy was brilliant! And the "Dude" thing, as a Californian it made perfect sense to me. I admit I still use "Dude" daily. lol

Be felt saddened because of his compassion for man and wants everyone to be better and will allow you to be changed. God doesn't make mistakes, man does, but he wants us to repent and he is very compassionate on those that humbly come to him. God does not seek to destroy, we bring it upon ourselves, he wants us to live in his creation and be free of sin, but we rebel and action has to take place or else everyone will become corrupt, though it still painful for The Father to punish the children. God is Good. We don't deserve his compassions, but he has it for us. Glory to God and Holy is his Name.

A friendly Disclaimer on Pastor Mike's teaching: It's important that we aren't taking this wrong and anticipating for God to completely give us everything we want in our lives just because we begin to do good. God sees the bigger picture and knows just what is needed for us to endure and grow in faith all the way to the end, when we recieve salvation. Good things in life are unfortunately never guaranteed, even if we are doing everything correctly. A prosperous life can only be found if God wills it for us. This teaching can easily be taken wrongly in today's world as prosperity gospel, if we are not spiritually sound. The bottom line is this, sin will always bring pain and unnecessary stress in your life and things will become much easier if we follow Gods will, but expect more trials! Always remember that doing the right thing doesn't save us from all of the everyday pain and problems that comes with living, not to mention living against the ways of the evil one at that! True happiness comes from excepting the trials with joy and hearing what God is saying to you and others within them. This is how we develop long suffering and true character in the lord. Faith comes through endurance and reliance of God within the midst of trails my friends. God bless.

God's foreknowledge, it's not based in what we are going to do, rather it is based in his response to anything we might do. If I tell my children that when they misbehave I will discipline them, that doesn't mean I know what they're going to do, instead of a predestined to plan to handle whatever they do.

I appreciate so much you dealing with this topic. My dad has been struggling with that Genesis passage for a very long time and I think this helped to clarify some things for him. I was trying to explain how to him and my mom that it's not God who changes because he is consistently always a god of love and justice. It is man who is either in his will or out of his will. The time you took to explain and walk through those passages really helped to clarify in ways that I could not

Big thanks to @Sarah Zimmerman for directing me to this video during the 20 Questions Live Stream today. I have been wrestling with these passages, especially Jonah 3:10 and Exodus 4:24 in light of the truth of God's immutability and omniscience. Thanks @Mike Winger for your in-depth teaching, your care with and proper handling of the Scriptures. This video stirs up my gratitude for God's mercy, steadfast patience, and the gift He gave us of our free will to obey or rebel against Him. Yet, in all these things, He knows everything, reigns supreme, and is not surprised by our choices though they may grieve or please Him. The Holy Spirit is faithful to convict us of our sins to repent and guide us into holiness if we allow Him to do so.

@Lincoln & Welland Regiment are you talking about Mike? I'm not sure why you think that way, but through discernment and reading the bible I will say Mike has been teaching the truth. I don't see ulterior motives. Jesus sent his apostles into the world and it was by the people they taught.. their needs where met. Mike is teaching the Gospel and we are to meet his needs just as we do with our Pastors...not to mention Mike is humble and not in expectation of anything. Which is testimony that Mikes total dependence is on God.
@autumnf7321
@autumnf7321 4 года назад
@Lincoln & Welland Regiment I don't know who will or won't burn, but I can say you need to search yourself and see if you are right with God. It's easy to fall into the pharisee way of thinking..ignoring our own sin. They even where blaspheming the Holy Spirit because their own agenda blinded them.
@autumnf7321
@autumnf7321 4 года назад
@Lincoln & Welland Regiment I believe some of what you do, but disagree with you about Mike. I do not believe he is in error..he teaches from the Gospel. You however have to go by what you believe this or that is..mixing truth with error. So I'm siding with the Gospel and trusting that I'm saved by Jesus alone.

I like the flashlight illustration. I have heard and like the pinwheel disc illustration. Two circular cards, one one top of the other, held together in the middle by a brass brad. The top card has a slit with an arrow on it from the center to the outer edge. The bottom card has listed the attitudes of God. . When you turn the top card to an attitude or action of man the slit reveals the action of God based on his attribute. The bottom card, God, doesn't move. It's only the top card, us, that moves. Which reveals God doing a different response. God doesn't change his 'mind' only his response. Hopefully this makes sense?

This is pretty much a straight up calvinist teaching. We were not individually predestined to be saved by Christ. Rather God predestined that Christ would save those who respond to the gospel. It's a completely different kind of foreknowledge.

A father had sons and daughters. The father had been around for a long time, full of wisdom, knowledge, and experience. His children slowly turned away, eventually rejecting the father all together. The father says "Ill cut them off ! Its horrible what I have done" afterwards he realizes that is not his nature and his love for them can not be quenched He loves his children and would do anything for them but he can not accept their rejection. So in his grief, as much as it pains him, he hopes that in his love his children will accept a relationship with him once again.
