I don't dislike quartz watches, there have been many impressive quartz movements over the the decades, the Rolex Beta 21, which later became the Oysterquartz, Seiko also been known to make decent quartz movements, many different watch companies were supplied with Seiko quartz movements. I am very impressed from what you told us about 9F series quartz and then there's the Daddy of them all the Spring Drive. Your 9F86 GMT with yellow accents has grown on me and your description of the movement in this video has made me even more impressed with it, it is a shame you decide to sell it Adrian.

I just bought an original 1993 Seiko Grand Seiko 9F83 9A00 day date white dial quite a bargain from a Japanese seller on eBay for over £700, it's a pretty good looking watch, very clean design, the dial is almost like a Patek Philippe Calatrava. I never thought I would get a Grand Seiko for under 1k. Can't wait to receive it👍

@@clegsmegson2627 I reckon he didn't wear it because, let's be honest, the reference he had is horrible. That yellow accent is awful, hard to pair, way to stand-out. The dial texture is cool, but distracting too. The other references in this series are pretty nice, the blue dial/red hand and the black dial/orange hand. I agree with Adrian though. The 9F series are great. Mechanical-lovers can't see it, but they'll soon pay upwards of 2k for an off the shelf ETA movement in a tudor that has had a few mods. I'd take GS9F over a huge amount of mech watches, but never over a in-house mech-movement. I really do think GS quartz represents GOOD - not great - value for money.
@j.c.3598

I agree. I was on the fence about the yellow themed watch. It makes it look like a regular old cheap seiko or other knock off brand and as he stated in a previous video it was very hard to pair. I ended up getting the blue face with the red GMT hand. This watch the SBGN005 looks so much better in my opinion. I use it to Sport around and goes well with blue jeans T-shirt or shorts T-shirt and can even be worn with a dress shirt and slacks for casual office attire. I also have the green Limited addition of 1200 SBGN007. This watch is even more dressy as it lacks lume and does not have the explorer type bezel. I get that the watch is in the sport collection, but I feel that with the yellow it went really overboard. I think the only attractive part of this watch is that it is limited to 800 pieces.

I thought a swiss made watch has to be mechanical. But somehow i got myself a Longines V.H.P Gmt quarz watch. And i love it. The movement with the flashlight setting and switching between the different timezones ist just amazing. Longines advertise the V.H.P collection with an accuracy of +- 5 seconds a year. One year ago, i set the watch witch the flashlight app and didn't have to change anything yet. And i mean ANYTHING. Most of my collection are mechanicals, but I also love my few quartz and solar watches. I find it very hard to find "nice" quartz watches in the affordable range. They seem to be either cheap crap watches, gaudy bling watches with overcrowded dials and cases, or gorgeous way out of my price range watches (eg Grand Seiko). I have a nice Zeppelin GMT that gains less than a second a month, and has a nice retro look. I keep looking for nice solar watches, but the range of choice is so limited. Sometimes I just want to grab a watch and go, without having to set the time, the date, and wind it. I also really appreciate the accuracy. Sometimes I use the quartz watches to set my mechanicals.

The one I'm impressed by is the Longine Conquest VHP (Very High Precision) Quartz watch. Movement is Caliber L288, accuracy within 5 seconds per year. Perpetual Calendar, End of Life indications when battery needs changing, if the battery does run out of power, the perpetual calendar remains in sync for up to 6 months before it has to be sent to a Longines service center to be reset. The movement also has several power-savings features, one that goes into effect if the watch is detected as not being worn for a set amount of time (hands all move to 12-o'clock position and no longer move until the stem is pulled out to a certain position, where they will move back to the current time positions); the other allows you to put the watch into power saving mode if it's not to be worn for an extended length of time, where again the hands move to the "rest" position until the crown is returned to normal position, at which time the hands move to the correct time. An amazing piece of technology and a beautiful watch. The regular VHP runs $1000-$1200 range, the VHP with GMT feature rins about $1200-$1400, and I just noticed (2022) that there is noww a chronometer version at around $1700.

To me quartz is a part of the electronic age of batteries and circuits and silicone chips. To be fair, it’s astounding the accomplishments we’ve made with computers and electronics. But there’s a different class of things that are purely mechanical, made of gears and pins and springs. They are moving parts that can be seen, and their fabrication and design represent man’s ability to create and problem solve, and use logical deduction for a solution to harness and express the concept of time in a concrete and tangible way. Humans are largely visual animals. When we see something, we believe it. We can easily visualize how a gear works, not quite so with an electrode. When things go on in a circuit, it just doesn’t hit home like a moving balance wheel. But some love their Apple Watch or quartz thinga-ma-jig and I can’t fault them for that... but it’s not for me

A quartz watch I was impressed with was my dad's old seiko 7a48 which is basically seiko's 7a28 (first quartz analogue chronograph) but with a moonphase complication. When I opened it up it was fully metal and moderately decorated. Was not expecting that at all. Sadly it no longer works but they are supposedly robust and easily serviceable so it'll hopefully be fixed soon!
@speedypaul2314
@speedypaul2314 4 года назад
I dont really understand the hate either. When quartz first came out they were seen as better than automatic movements. In fact brands struggled to sell automatic. A few years later it took to sell automatic again. The first quartz were generally better made than most now with exception of grand seiko and sinn. A lot of people forget Rolex did quartz and they are now very expensive pieces because of the rarity. You cant argue with just putting one on and wearing without faf. They keep in many cases better time and rarely need a battery changing.
@greenbow7888
@greenbow7888 2 года назад
I have to correct the perception that a quartz watch is cold and dead like a calculator. A calculator has a silicon chip in it that does mathematical functions. A quartz watch has a piece of quartz that has electricity applied to it. Under this condition quartz resonates at a fixed given frequency. (This is physics and acoustics in action, and is beauty in its own way.) Timekeeing is taken from the fixed frequency of the quartz. In other words quartz watches are not a watch with a silicon chip doing the timekeeping. There are also different qualities of quartz, which make more accurate watches. Plus the technical watchmaking skill of taking the quarz timing, and making the movement from it. (A perfect example of quality movements, is the watch in question in this video.) All the other aspects of less servicing and greater ruggedness, as boons thrown in for the truly concientious amongst us. However most people reading this will be thinking ah yes but etc, in favour of mechanical watches. Maybe because most well designed in terms of aesthetics, are mechanical watches. Mechanical watches cost more. Hence they are mens fashion items to maybe attract a partner. .... However, you have to think about who you are attracting with that. I'd prefer the partner who is attracted to what I value, or values me for having my values. My values are, I like quartz watches and mechanical watches, with zero bias.

I love my SBGN007. Gained 1 second after a year. Can’t argue with that! My other geeky quartz is my Speedmaster X-33 Skywalker, which looks rather good on a Bark and Jack NATO

I actually enjoy my quartz watches, and there IS a difference in them. Some are just cheap junk, but there are others that are finely tuned instruments of horological significance. They are all very accurate compared to manual or automatic watches. The fact that these type of watches can approach the accuracy of a quartz isn’t lost on me. I love my mechanical watches as well. I just don’t love their inaccuracies. When, on those seldom occasions that I need that level of accuracy, I do wear my quartz watches I definitely appreciate them. Great review, and very incite full!!!

I love all my mechanical watches, but for an accuracy junkie like myself quartz movements are on another level and GS quartz movements are on another planet! I have the reissue of the original 9F watch (SBGT241) and between DST adjustments it gained 0.5 seconds which is basically human error when setting the watch. That's just insanity. Also knowing that a watch will be good to go when I pick it up makes it super helpful instead of having to wind it, wait for the seconds hand to reach 0, adjust the time and date, make sure the minute hand is lined up perfectly, wait for the reference time to reach 0, and then finish. (Or just finding out that my beloved modded SKX is 3 minutes slow again😄)

Hello Adrian, I have owned my GS champagne dial 9f now for over six years and the accuracy is incredible as is the sheer quality of the watch. There are now some very accurate quartz watches but I have yet to see a quartz movement in new watches that match the 9f in terms of finish and looks and also hand assembled. I have to admit for me ,the movement was one of the main reasons I bought this watch as it is a good feeling to know that you have one of the best , if not the best ( in my humble opinion) quartz watches money can buy. Keep the great videos coming Cheers Dave

Great video. Just bought an sbgn003, the normal one....the prior owner kept track of accuracy for 3 or 4 years. Over all of that time it was +/- 0.0s. Heck, the manual notes leap seconds and this watch will notice those...a lot. Amazing watches - best or partner in best with "The Citizen 0100" in world by far in quartz (9f96 is a movement, not a computer). And useful. Not sure why I waited so long to "get it." Solar would have been nice, but I am ok with a battery too. Used was 2k with an extra strap. Cannot beat this anywhere...and it even looks amazing too. These are just the best GADA out there and frankly are at least as good as the explorer 1. Black with an slight amount of orange in the SBGN003 makes it frankly (to me) more useful if not as LE as the SBGN001 you had. I suspect if you got an SBGN003 used you'd keep it as you'd be using it. The cost of doing service on my prior automatics and one spring drive was just shocking....this has such a better total cost of ownership that it is a no brainer.

I really like this GS and I like the yellow. I enjoy wearing my Bell and Ross BRS which has a quartz movement. I don't know much about it and I don't think it as good as the GS movement but it's nice anyway. Changing the battery is expensive, though. Oh and Bark and Jack also don't have 24 mm NATO straps, I cried when I realized this.

Great video Adrian! Your explanation was quite thorough, perhaps now Jack Forester will remember meeting you and teaching you all this! If you’ll remember we met in NYC at the Blancpain boutique and talked about these watches, I was wearing (and still own) my 003 black dial version of this watch. It’s got a special place in my heart for total reliability during travel while still stoking the passion inside me. Cheers, Brad

The Grand Seiko 9F quartz is estimable. I also like the G-Shock Full Metal Square quartz watch. I have a GS spring drive diver which is powered by a mainspring but which foregoes an escapement and which generates its own power without a battery to support quartz oscillation. Watch snobs dismiss spring drive as something akin to quartz watches which is in error. These alternatives to conventional mechanical watches are exciting and worthwhile.

Check out the Mondaine stop2go watch. They have one that have the second hand sweep like a mechanical watch. And most interesting is the sweep around is done in 58 Sec and it paused for 2 Sec at 60 mark. This is exactly how the Swiss railroad clocks work.

Amazed when I saw this video in my recommended list. It's my grail quartz watch I've been trying to find for over a year when I first saw it! Missed one by a couple hours a few weeks ago. With only 800 made, I'm sure it'll be continuously harder to find. I have found many Sbgn005s available, doesn't compare to the Sbgn001. Additional note here, the black dial has the movement stamped/ embossed on it giving some texture and a really nice look in different light. Subscribed to your channel after this one. Thanks and I look forward to your coming videos!

Ok, as much as I am traditional watch collector/wearer/buyer/fan, I do have time for high end quartz and don't totally write them off. Had a Citizen Chronomaster and a couple of Breitling Superquartz (thermocompensated). However, when Swatch Group can sell the Longines VHP for less than £1k, which is accurate to +/-5 seconds a year, it starts to make this look expensive. Its easy to talk about build quality, sure, the Grand Seiko and will no doubt be a better finish than the Longines, but if its less accurate, what's the USP? I ask again, where is the value? (usually quite easy to spot and quantify on Seiko's, less so in their HAQ offerings, especially with the VHP being on the market)

I have the blue dial version of this watch on order. What sold me on this watch was that movement. Grand Seiko is like the Lexus of the watch industry. They often get overlooked by European competitors but they really are the better option for day-to-day use in the long run. For me, this is the perfect everday watch. I can set it once, use it in almost any situation, enjoy my mechanical watches, and come back to this thing ticking and ready to go.

I appreciate the accuracy of quartz watches, and that I can leave them in the drawer, and just take one out and put it on without winding and re-setting it. My complaint is that typically the case, dial, and hands are cheap--or just look cheap. Grand Seiko is one of the few brands that make high -quality cases, hands, and dials for a quartz watch.

My first decent watch was quartz, the Tissot PRC200 chrono on a bracelet. It looked much more expensive than it was and it always got compliments. Times have moved on since then but I long for another quartz and recently came across the Yema Spacegraf which is a 40mm French Space Agency watch that uses a quartz movement for accurate time measurement in zero-g. It too is relatively inexpensive and I can't wait to pick one up! For me it's about the significance of the watch and brand whether historical or practical. I like Yema for their involvement with the French military, air force, space agency and even some motor racing inspiration. I like Marloe for their unique British designs, I like MAEN because of how much time and effort they put beautiful looking watches with STP movements that they decorate, adjust and regulate to a level only found in much more expensive in-house movements. It all means something as a watch enthusiast!

Bryan Davis Bryan, all good points and true. All I can say is that some relationships are needy, and you accept that because of the other benefits. It can be hard to pinpoint why, but for some an automatic gives a special feeling. I have quartz watches in my collection, but the watches I love to wear the most are all autos.

I have a Tag Heuer Kirium F1 CL111A quartz chronograph that actually syncs the hands to the digital readout time which is pretty cool and I believe the first ones to do that. Also easy to pull the crown and give a quick flick forward or back to "jump hours" for travel. I hardly wear it any more, maybe once or twice a year.

I've got a cheap Tissot quartz but it's a COSC one, temperature compensated and accurate to 12 seconds a year. I only ever have to mess with it to change the date and change the hour twice a year of course. Owned it for four years and the accuracy is just starting to go off a little - it's probably around 15 to 20 seconds a year now.

Quartz watches are awesome. They can sit in your drawer for a month, slap it on your wrist and it's still as actuate as your mobile phone clock. No winding business or shaking your watch like we're still in the 1800s, or having to readjust the minutes every now and then. Logically you'd think everyone should be using quartz, but I guess in this world everyone is trying to sell us shit we don't need. "Luxury"..
