I've been thinking this for YEARS. Gretchen's outfits always stood out to me. What I notice with rich girl characters (different from mean girl characters) is that they're usually the best dressed in terms of costuming. There's more attention paid to detail, and the clothing tends to be more harmonised. Regina wore standard trends, Karen had no real style identity but Gretchen's outfits, give or take a few details, has stood the test of time the most.
This is such a great point! I think of Elle Woods and Cher from Clueless. They were kind rich girls and always looked styled, whereas mean girls like Regina are more lost and insecure
@maddiep686 Thank you for the compliment...but all the characters mentioned are lost and insecure, that's kind of the point of the films they're in. What I meant was that Regina's character was highly on the pulse of what teenagers were into in the early 2000s, and her costuming was proof of that. People like Gretchen, Cher and even Elle appear more timeless because better tailoring and materials are something they have access to (the characters, anyway - costuming isn't always made up of new designer pieces). That's what works so well about the costuming.
She was always the stand out. Everyone was trying to follow Regina but Gretchen always dressed in her own style and therefore had her own mind. I also cant tell if I’m a TR or a SG. It’s a struggle 😭😭
From what I understand, the main difference between the two is that while they both have double curve and petite, with TR, double curve takes more priority while with SG, petite takes priority. So personally, I would check to see if FG or R looks better. If FG looks better, petite might be the bigger priority. If R looks better, double curve might be the bigger priority. But then again, both TR and FG have vertical so that might skew the results a bit. Just something to think about 🤷🏻♀️
@@minervarose7664 All the sources I’ve seen list SG as having double curve. Even Ellie Jean considers SG as having double curve. It’s just not the dominant thing that needs to be accounted for.
My stomach dropped when you started talking about counselling and I was saying “please don’t be better help, please don’t be better help, please don’t be better help”. I cannot escape their ads anywhere no matter how many times I click “not interested” For anyone reading this who doesn’t know, please do not use better help! They’ve had multiple class actions against them for releasing sensitive data to 3rd party platforms and their Terms of Services says if you sign up, you agree not to hold them accountable for anything. They’re a terrible company. And to Ellie-Jean if you see this, please be aware people boycott channels who partner with Better Health
I always thought it was so interesting how Regina basically ignored Karen but bullied Gretchen and as I get older it makes so much sense because Gretchen is way more of a social threat to Regina. Honestly her style and your analysis make it even clearer. As a fellow lit major can I say your Shakespearean comment is so perfect ❤
Yes! That’s the take I was looking for. At first I was wondering why they chose such stylish clothes on Gretchen if she’s a follower (she changes groups in the end). But what you said might explain it. She’s a threat to Regina because she already has style and social status, but she’s not as confident and self-assured. So she uses Gretchen’s need for validation by bringing her close but keeping her down.
I have watched mean girls close to a million times but I never noticed how much she did set herself apart from the other girls 😂 she always felt different but I couldn’t put my finger on why. It’s cool to see these analysis and see just how much attention is put into the telling of character development through costumes, and how well thought out these characters really were.
That brown nail color suits you so well, it's genius. It's stunning details like this that make me believe I've made the right choice following you for style advice.
I studied costume design in college and worked in film and TV for years - I love your character analysis videos. You are someone who really understands how clothing expresses a character and that character’s evolution. Those choices are typically intentional storytelling devices done by the costume designers. I know you’re studying something else but for what it’s worth, I think you’d make a wonderful costume designer! 😉
Always love watching your style breakdown videos. One piece of feedback I have - I personally find certain things regarding the editing, pretty distracting. Like when a few of the words you are saying in a sentence are just put on the screen. It feels random and not helpful. I do like the visual cues, especially when they have a more personal touch. And do find those helpful. I appreciate that you like to go in-depth in topics, while also explaining things in an approachable way. Your content has helped me better explore and understand my personal style and tastes, and I realize I also enjoy analyzing other peoples’ style.
Gretchen is actually closer to a theatrical romantic (with a gamine essence). We tend to forget the OG theatrical romantic examples like vievien leigh and focus on extremely curvy salma hayek or the glamorous styled celebrities . A good way to tell would be to stand next to an obvious gamine and see how the juxtaposition of the gamine is coming forward next to a TR.
What is it about her that distinguishes her as TR to you? I'm unsure if I'm SG or TR (though I lean towards the latter bc imo I look better in those lines) and I find it very difficult to tell the two apart
@@caras4766 As I said, a good way to tell would be to stand in a mirror next to/ take a couple full pictures with an obvious gamine and see how the juxtaposition of the gamine is easily coming forward next to a TR. That is how I knew a friend of mine was a TR with gamine essence. Seeing her in multiple full pictures next to three gamine friends and one romantic all standing together. It was the most helpful.
I have the DVD of the movie, and there are special features from the costume designer that say that Gretchen is the one trying to visually differentiate from the other Plastics
Someone knows The Clique! Omg I thought no one else would mention the books. These books interested my fashion style and made me the woman I am today 😂❤
great video! I read an interview a little while back with the costume director for the movie and she said gretchen wears all the plaid and argyle because she sees those as classic british patterns- like the burberry plaid- which was a nod to her iconic "so fetch" line and claiming it was slang from england.
100% agreed. Better Help is such a well known, well documented scam that I absolutely side eye creators who sponsor them. Because they are either irresponsible, clueless and will promote anything with zero research OR they don’t give a crap and will scam people for a paycheck. If you’re sponsoring Better Help in the year of our lord 2023 you have no excuse, period.
Still waiting for more style roots in depth Videos! I'm Earth + Flower for sure.. But cant tell my 3rd.. I need more in depth explanations to be sure 🙏🏻 Great work Ellie!❤
Has anyone seen Josie and the pussycats? It's from same time as mean girls and I think the teenagers talk about wearing orange instead of pink in this film. They follow a different trend every week for reasons you will find out if you watch it lol.😂
In honor of the new mean girls musical movie coming out, you should do a style analysis of the other Mean Girls characters, like Cady, Regina, Karen, and Janis.
These film/series style breakdowns are such a creative way to explore characters. I would LOVE an analysis of Lisbeth Salander from the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (either version), especially since you did that edgy style breakdown a while back.
Her shoulders seem narrow and dainty to me. I'm so obsessed with Krysten Ritter, and her style. Very few people seem to have seen the show Don't Trust the B... In Apt 23 -- but that is a visual epic for me. Anybody else?
You are not alone; I too am obsessed with Kristen Ritter and I love Don't Trust the B**** in Apartment 23! Chloe's character always puts me in a better mood 😂. I really love her style in all of her other big roles, too, including her as Jane in Breaking Bad, and Jessica Jones. The latter two style profiles are more edgy, hassle-free/laid back, but great jeans, combat boots, and a leather jacket is a go-to for me when I am feeling less glamorous. Kristen just has the best style and look; she stands out with her signature bangs and her really porcelain skin and doe eyes. I have a pretty similar look, but I'm really short. And of course, she's a great actress. Check out Eva Green (Penny Dreadful), too, as I think she has a similar look. ❤
Unrelated but I saw that you updated your pinterest with a collection of the Flower x Earth x Moon style roots and I got really excited because it confirmed for me that my roots are Flower X Earth x Sun because I wanted all of those clothes just in brighter colors.
Dear Ellie Jean, can you please explain why Sookie from True Blood seems to always wear tablecloth? 😢 I hate the style so much, I almost stopped watching the series 😂 Love Lafayette’s outrageous outfits though 😂
Oh look. A flower stone deep dive again. Didn't see that one coming. Not like it isn't every video you do. Now it's flower stone MOUNTAIN 😮 whoa. Mindbending. What will it be next, flower stone earth? Wait no of course not, you've already done that one three times. But I could be wrong. You could do it again. It seems to be the only ones you understand of your own system.
