I got a mama and 3 of her babies here in the side yard and here I am thinking about how to get closer to them by knowing what else they eat. Silly me! And yes we have a HUGE front lawn, a specious side lawn and the back yard area that’s smaller but leads out to the woods or over to the next yard. The thing is our property is the furthest away from the main road where the house is far from the road but closer to the woods so we get ALOT of deer strolling and chilling in the yard areas because it is so far from the road no humans other than the ppl living here and the whole property is mowed every 9 days! So any animal that lives open spacious far from cars ppl and traffic close to the woods would love this property. Mama ground Hogg’s looks so cute with her babies in the yard feeding on stuffs I had to look up info on them but now thinking 2ce about trying to get closer to them cuz of their cuteness.

Then she disappeared for a few days and I though she was gone. And then. . . you know what's coming don't you? Yup, then she showed up and was normal sized again but had four babies with her. Watching the entire family eat the clover in my back yard was seriously adorable, I must admit. She lives in a log pile at the back of the yard and hides when she sees our dog. We've got the veggie garden fenced and she stays away from the flowers and herbs, so I would say we are peacefully co-existing.

@@nancywaters253 Those 4 young ones will all have to build burrows somewhere, probably nearby. Oh, and each one builds at least 2 burrows, so that's 8 more tunnels on or near your property. Keep an eye out for them going under any decks that you may have. We didn't bother with them for the first few years that I lived at our current home, and that was a mistake, since they started coming up to dig under our decks and steps. We now have a shoot on sight policy for them if they show themselves anywhere on our property that we can see from the house. My dad grew up about 30 miles or so from here on a farm with woods and a stream on the property, where he wandered around as a kid and observed all kinds of wildlife, and yet he never saw one, probably because the farmers had eradicated them in the area for being the absolute menaces that they are. As this area loses more farmland, though, the people stop being vigilant about the threat that they pose, until it becomes a problem for them. Whenever I see one that was hit by a car, which is sadly pretty rare, I just say, "Good." No coexistence for me.

We have multiple rifles for different ranges. The farthest open parts of the property are over 100 yards from the house, so a scoped .223 rifle is the weapon of choice for any out there, while a lever-action .22 or even a .22 revolver is fine for the close ones. The problem with the close ones is that they tend to be skittish, so you have to be careful about making noise.

@@Jaybob33 I’m a fan of animals as well but when they become destructive it’s time to take action. I’ve thought about flooding them out but they will likely just return in a few days. I’ve live-trapped as many as 7 in one season but the next year they’re back. I’m thinking it’s time to chose a more lethal route.

@@crystalball020 What is that supposed to mean? How would you like it if somebody kicked you for no reason? You probably wouldnt like it, unless you are into bdsm. Animals feel pain too. Only if you plan on killing and eating them, you should not be harming them otherwise.

Every Sunday morning one would be gnawing on my steps. Finally I got tired of it and posted up at my bedroom window and shot it in the head. After I killed it I took it to a friend's house and propped it up on sticks. He got home and pulled his pistol out and started shooting it. We had a good laugh about it the next day lol.

How about if it chooses your house under tunnel to poop under! How cute would that be? Farmers have sunk down into deep holes due to underground tunnels??? 😩😠😟Think about being one of those folks ! Their wild animals .. Period.

I you get rid of one another one comes and takes it place. Even If you fill in the holes the next one always seem to find the old hole and re-dig it. I have rid my yard of 75-100 in the last 15 years and there is always a new one.

So none of the co-workers could have punted the groundhog? The intimidation tactic only works if you can back it up. I have chased geese away, I could definitely punt something that isn't a protected animal
@VNYoshi

Some animal have hard wired instinct to fight till death as a survival mechanism, to deter predators from hunting them, much like nuclear deterrence. Not sure about groundhog, but wolverines for example, WILL fight you till they die. Your goal should be to survive, not to power trip against an animal, which literally couldn't care less that it will lose and die, but to inflict as much damage as possible to warn predators against attacking their kind.
