The amount of videos/streams I've seen with Blue Water Blue Sky playing as the BGM is uncountable. It was the whole reason I stayed fishing.

As a new Guilty Gear player I do appreciate how the change in the gatling system gives more purpose to the strings and overall for the type of game Strive is this system works better, however I must say having gone back and testing out the older GG games (they're really cheap right now on Steam) the old gatling just feels better to me. Like it's more satisfying to do P>K>cS>fS>HS than just cS>fS>HS. Still loving Strive but I hope for the next game they find some sort of way to bring back the 4 button gatlings from older titles while also keeping the purpose each gatling has from Strive (if that's even possible).

The new gatlings in Strive is what keeps the game from being a 10/10 game for me. RIght now, it's an 9/10 (I dig everything else but THAT)

Leo is one of the exceptions to the new gatling structure, when he‘s in his back stance. I guess a lot of new players are not aware of that.

@@metr0nom314 5K has shorter range and scales worse in combos, so there's good reason to cut straight to 5S. 5S into command grab is the real shit, though.

Ah, the minute you explained how gatlings worked in Xrd I understood why Arksys chose to change them. Personally feel like "learn when to use your buttons" is a lot more useful as a newer player than "learn these very specific gatling routes" as a long-term skill to pick up.

6:07 I think it benefits begginers and intermediate players by putting more focus on combo purpose rather than rote memorization of a pseudo-auto-combo. The game is showing some of the most fun things about the genre more up-front than the previous games.

On top of that, the gatling tables on the wiki are so much easier to parse than Xrd's. It's a lot clearer which combinations are and aren't available to you and therefore easier to figure out when to use them. There's so many practically useless gatlings in Xrd that just clog up the tables and make things impossible for beginners to make heads or tails of.

The game tries to stress in its tutorial just press buttons and do a motion and cool stuff happens, def does not hold your hand on actually learning combos and I like that, friend recently tried to get me to learn dbfz and I actually hate its combo system entirely, especially block strings....

@@wolflance64 Yeah man, I was legit falling asleep on defense in DBFZ. Strive's new system, however, makes blockstrings way shorter (which I like) and makes you think twice about the buttons you choose to press instead of defaulting to insane 5Ls like DBFZ did with its latest DLCs

I disagree, it's way more memorization now. I have to know not only my highly specific button cancels but also my opponents, whereas before i could just hold back for 4-5 attacks and be able to confirm up the chain on hit. This is way more complecated.

@@nickromano3087 Thing is, your and your opponent's combo paths are practically the same, so once you learn it, you can apply it to all the characters. In the last game you could at many points go on auto-pilot and do things on muscle memory, but hopefully here it'll become less of a common thing. It'll still be here, but it won't be rewarded as much: meaning you'll have to win with strategy and mindgames more.

Honestly, I feel like I used more buttons in previous GGs compared to Strive. I hardly ever hit P as Millia these days and I hardly think to use 6P to antiair since it feels better to just beat them in the air instead.

The latter is more a Millia thing; 6P is like the only reliable anti air for some characters.

One consequence of the new system is shorter combos; i.e. 2K > 2D would probably be like 2P > 5P > 5K > 2K > 2D, which is not only harder to memorise for someone new but also harder to input consistently. I do expect P > K and K > S to return in Strive's first "expansion" whenever that is.

I think ArkSys said that they thought gatling from a low risk low damage jab into the rest of the gatling for a bigger reward "didn't make sense" to them. They designed it so that you have to commit to slower and negative frame moves to earn you bigger damage combos as the reward.

Interesting video, I was thinking that a reason for the change was to reduce access to hard knockdowns from mash buttons and give better differentiation between hits, so that hitting c.S doesn't lead to the same situation as hitting 5P

I think the more important reason they changed gatlings is for the effect it has on neutral and hitconfirms. You can't get a full combo off of a 5P and that's a pretty big deal.

Thanks, I'm a returning player and it helped me a little bit to understand how gatlings work in Strive. So in essence - fever attacks chain together and chains are shorter.

Adding my POV in relation to the take that the new system is bad for new players, I only started getting into fighting games with strive, but with the rundown on Gatling systems in the other games they put me off really bad. In strive it feels like I know most of my options, and I just have to think/practice on its use. Compared to (possibly ignorant understanding of the Gatling system in the other GG games) where you have to memorize a chart for moves and then just follow pro strats for specific chains you'll use 90% of the time. I could have a poor take due to not having my hands on the system, but that's my 2 cents

I prefer strive compared to something like Tekken 7 where you have a huge list of moves and you find out what goes into what, to me it's just takes up so much time before you can play at a good level and not just mashing buttons hoping the combo continues

The cool thing about Tekken movelists is that everything you will ever need is built into the moves like counter hit launchers, frame traps in strings, crushing moves, evasive moves, and power crush. Strive has none of those, and you have to create the equivalents of those things with just the moves you have on hand. In Tekken if you want a CH setup then they are premade for you with your moves. If you want a CH setup in Guilty Gear then you need to know the matchup and invent it yourself.

We just have KOF normals now. Normal ->command normal is pretty standard for SNK types. Lights chained into command normal or close heavy button into command normal.

This was really hard for me to get used to coming from dragon ball and i really thought 5P, 2P felt useless i had to remove that button to train myself to use K more. But these Gatling system is starting to make sense to me now

Great vid!!! It seems the gatlings in Strive seem exactly like the ones found in Battle Fantasia, not necessarily in terms of routes, but rather their purpose/application.

Yeah, as dbfz player that felt really weird at first. I don’t know if this makes sense but the game had a pretty flexible hierarchy of button order, you could use any combination that respected this order at first this limitation in this game made me feel shackled

I'm very impressed with Strive's depth, it's much more than i thougth it was gonna be before it launched. And EVERY character feels VERY unique, somehow even more than before... I think the reduced speed of the game is what has allowed for the characters to shine so much and there's a lot of player expression too

Thank you for posting this. The way i've been thinking of it since the gattling system was displayed was "huh. so there's less routes, but it's like ALL combo routes are optimal now. It's like they cut the fat so that Every option for strive is the Best option available for Something. I think it pushes people to focus on decision-making and interacting with the other player. In Xrd you could make the correct decision, but then your Execution is tested and if you fail you drop the combo and don't get rewarded despite making a good choice. I think strive's combos being shorter Primarily just give players less opportunities to screw up their execution, putting emphasis on the choices you make since it's less likely you'll drop a super demanding combo and lose a reward you earned because you didn't grind in training mode long enough.

I think that they changed the gatlings to make the game more different from xrd and to not let veteran players do similar strings or combos from older games (because they wanted to make everyone at the same level)

While I liked the relative freedom of the old gatlings, I tended to go through them a bit too quickly to avoid missing the cancel window. There were also so many weird routes and exceptions to the rules as well, so that didn't help. And neither did the pushback from pressing buttons more often. The new gatlings make me feel like I have more control over my frametraps, pressure resets and mixups without explicitly relying on auto-timed cancels because of how long I can delay them. It also didn't take as long to get comfortable with how those options fit together.

Sajam has a video on YRC already. If you get hit by the shockwave, you're VERY minus. The yrc shockwave has a startup however, and can be baited with fast p or k normals into blocking. If you block the shockwave you can generally punish or at least continue your pressure.

At first i questioned why changed the regular gatling bc i was so used to other games but im loving strive the more i play it. It feels like the game that was ment for me

millia wants to do lights into sweep anyway so she can set up her offense, so her light buttons are actually really strong most characters dont get a lot of damage off of lights but if you can get a knockdown that can basically lead into free damage anyway

The one thing i see becoming an issue is when you are on the mid floors like 5-7 and to an extent sometimes even 8+, since there are consistant things people tend to just not know how to deal with like meaties, the game feels very flow chart heavy. So far I feel like it makes the game easy to get into but to cross the bridge into the upper skill level becomes a very wide margin where you just gotta deal with a fuck ton of repetetive matches where everyone falls for the same shit all the time and theres basically no interesting combos or mixups going on.

@@gaben282 nah usually theres more variety to your options in games like xrd where you get into less predictable scenarios where you gotta do more to read your opponents mixups. So far mid level strive, everyome is a gorilla so you have your one grounded gatling and your antiair counter hit combo and people will just mash out that combo and on the knock down run up in your face and meaty. The only thoughtful decision making ive had to do so far is deciding if i should throw on their wakeup occasionally if they ever decide to learn how to block.

It's interesting that you think it doesn't benefit new players. I always had trouble breaking out of using the gatling series in Xrd, where in Strive I had no choice but to learn what each moves range/frames/usage was.

Leo has a unique option in Strive: He can chain 5HS into fS. If it wouldn't be for pushback he could do fS > 5HS > fS > 5HS... infinitely.

The sweep on Millia's kkk2d misses pretty often in my experience. Isn't it more reliable to go for one or two 5k into 2d instead or is it purely a matter of getting used to right spacing/timing? What's the point of delaying those kicks?

To catch counter pokes, if you mash it and they fd yer gunna get slapped so delaying timing ensures they get caught for pressing a button, and to get the 3 hit a of k you need to dash to get momentum

5K has a delay cancel so if you delay, you can beat mashing that 5k > 6H won't beat. Frame traps!

I mean if that was there reasoning they could have left the p,k,s,hs,d alone and just made it so any command normal is the end of the string while also having the push back they do in this game. they come off more convoluted by trying to separate them in basically 3 sections.

To be honest as someone that is not great at this games who just played the gg xrd 2 times with firends and 2 weeks before strive this change is the worst, I just feel so limited and I developed the habit of not using P and just a few K's cause I just feel I don't get nothing from them.

I forget where I heard it and it may be total nonsense but I saw somewhere that they made the change to deliberately shorten combos (which is why they boosted the base damage to compensate). The reasoning being that new players would get frustrated if they had to sit there and watch their character getting beaten like a rag doll for 50 consecutive hits so by keeping the combos shorter, newcomers don't feel quite so "locked out" of doing the fun part of fighting games (pushing buttons).

I still am not a fan of them. may for example lost 5k->f.S which was a natural frame trap/combo and gave time to charge dolphins. I'm not against them cutting the excess, but natural chains that you used to use getting cut has me a little upset. just a little

I remember in Xrd I had a situation where in that game I started to prefer this Gatling was way back when I picked up Ky. I was experimenting with him, and and I saw far slash right. So much range, super good poke. Well okay, I hit it so it must go into 5H right? It's a Gatling so it must. Except it doesn't. Okay well what does it go into? 2S is too short...2D is too short, 6K is too slow....what do I do? Oh...3H. but it doesn't combo normally. And it can whiff. And it had to be counter hit. I know at least in this game, that for every character f.S is gonna combo into H consistently.

@@DMitsukirules The issue I'm saying is not that there isn't an option, there's Gatling options no less if not unintuitive and situational. While the superior option itself isn't even a normal, and no less including the fact that you have to spend meter, it's that other characters can literally Gatling normally. People say "oh the buttons will always combo from P>K>S>H" and even that isn't necessarily true, there's a huge asterisk on that. Sol can go from f.S to 5H normally, and Ky can't?

I'll say first that I don't mind the new gatling system. If what you're saying is correct and they changed the gatlings because it's more "optimal" in blockstrings; that feels super bad. I didn't do my blockstrings in Rev 2 because they were optimal, I just enjoyed having the freedom and pressing whatever I want. Sure I didn't know how to beat certain options the opponent did, but I still had fun playing. The game devs min maxing for us is kind of meh, I just want to have fun pressing my stupid Elphelt buttons and pressuring with 2P>2P>2P>5K>5S. I think my only real problem with the new gatlings is that I love lights and you get nothing from 5/2P in this game unless you're in the corner.

Ngl, one of the things I hated the most about XRD is how return wasn't spread evenly off mashing lights. Some chars basically get nothing/very little (implied dmg would be good), while the chars who get combos off everything would do mad damage off mashing (looking especially at Elphelt, but Johnny, Raven and other chars do this too).

While the difference in reward isn't quite as extreme as in Xrd, you can still pick characters with decent light conversions. May is the obvious choice (hkd midscreen, wallbreak in the corner) but Ky, Ram, Nagoriyuki all get a combo off chained jabs and Leo, Anji can combo off P -> 6P

And that's the problem strive presented. Xrd and other GGs let the players choose and make their own strings to use in different occasions. Strive took that away from players.

as a new player to gg i prefer the new system as its a bit more limited and therefore theres less shit i have to learn for my character as well as all of my opposing characters. Coming from playing tekken 7 casually its a breath of fresh air as that games sheer volume of moves was enough to prevent me from committing any serious amount of time to it.

I don't really know how gatlings are different to the LMH combos in Street Fighter. Of course characters are gonna play different to eachother, especially in Guilty Gear, but extremely simple combos just seem like a weird thing to complain about. Just make more complex combos if basic stuff ain't working.

In most anime fighters, “gatlings” are basically the ability to press normal buttons in strength order. In GG, P>K>S>HS>Dust is the strength order, and in previous GG titles, you can press in that order. In Strive, you can’t do that anymore, you mostly have to cancel into command normals, which you can check for in your character’s move list. The list tells you what your command normals are. You’re new to fighting games, so if that still confuses you, don’t worry too much about it for now until you feel like you wanna seriously start learning how that stuff works

Solid video. My tldr understanding for the change is people were getting rewarded too easily on mashable light attacks. That's not fun. Fighting games should feel like chess. Deliberate moves with very specific rewards and strive DOES do that. There's room for improvement but fighterz got great updates and I'll expect no less from strive.

it's specific because each character in guilty gear has different conditions and LK was giving examples based off on the character he plays. there's a few different conditions for different characters but his points are still relevant if you keep that in mind.

Yes, I can tell you 100%: it does not benefit new or more casual players. According to your theory, this was done to cater to a high skill level game, which is how I've been feeling tbh. I've played tons of Xrd, and none of what you brought up in the beginning was ever relevant to me, and the game there still feels easier and more approachable than Strive. It unfortunately also makes the game a lot more repetitive. There really is just one game plan for the most part, and if you follow higher level players and watch their replays, they're basically doing 1 or 2 different combos, and that's it. It's a shame. Game's still challenging and fun, though, but..

Strive's repetition is starting to get to me as well. Neutral, combos, strings, it all is more simplified and less freedom. I wasn't even competitive in Xrd but I could immediately _feel_ the freedom. While Strive I immediately felt much more restricted.

@@DMitsukirules because you can still link punch, and kick usually gatlings on many people. Not making punches gatling means in general for people to do gatlings they gotta do bigger buttons, which makes sense for a noob and is also easier to get into.

I still don't know how to feel about it. On one hand, every gatling in Strive is useful. There are really no bad options. Everything has a place and I just need to find the proper application. In Xrd, I actually had to unlearn bad gatling habits I developed when I first started, BUT there was far more room to freestyle. Sure, some of my choices may have been terrible, but I could at least go with a specific route simply because I found it fun.

There´s no trash in Strive,there´s tons of room for creativity, but there´s just no "fat" it´s way better this way. You can´t honestly look at everything the characters can do (with more and more being discovered each day, like kara-fafnir etc) and say this isn´t a game that allows for an insane amount of creativity and variation at every level.

@@jonnysac77 well no, fat is fat, it´s just bad game design. specially since it´s so unfriendly to the players, as they are expected to learn soo much shit, a game is not great if people don´t play it. Every single little thing in Strive allows for creativity, even before RC comes into the equation. You need to have patterns you can hold in your mind so that the game is an actual dialog. You tell me one thing in Strive that doesn´t allow for creativity, one situation, you can´t, because there isn´t.
