Hi Phil, You are a class act. It's refreshing that you want people to appreciate things because of what you went through. I listen every week. I usually gig Fridays or I'm busy with my kids but I never miss the replay. I'm going to send a thank-you super chat now. I love the honesty and genuine nature. You're awesome! Don't change a thing.

I built a tele that I auctioned off for charity, and it had a Lace sensor in the bridge. It was my favorite tele pickup, and I literally tried over a dozen different tele bridge pups. YMMV. The guy who bought it owned a pro studio and he absolutely loves it.

I keep a close eye on the second hand market. I've noticed some softening for widely popular guitars (eg Fender Players) though nothing crazy. At all times, there is a big supply of Fender Custom Shop. So many people trying to offload them.

I hear you. I've owned klon number 300, fuzz faces from 1968 and several other vintage pedals. Sure they sounded wonderful but that's why they were reproduced. Being honest there's pedals for under £200 that do the exact same thing just as good. The difference is how they make you feel having them on your board, not how they sound (excluding part tolerance which can I pact 1 pedal from the next regardless of age)

I just bought my first real Fender custom shop. I knew what I wanted the specs I would order, and went on Reverb and found exactly what I would have ordered, $3500 to my door all in total. So before tax and all it was 3200, which I don’t think is too shabby considering the prices today. Its a heavy relic, listed as mint but who would notice lol. Only 2 yrs old and only in studio never gigged. I wouldn’t say that was a bad buy. I didnt buy it to collect it or resell it anyway. I got it to play it, and replace some guitars I didnt play. So I downsized a few good guitars for 1 custom shop. Its still worth it to me, I just wouldn’t ever order a brand new one. No way! Also Id never buy a brand new 335. Check Reverb man. Ouch! And yes I have guitars worth more than my pickup truck lol. And I live in an old farm house. Most would call a fixer upper. But Id rather have guitars and enjoy living, than a truck payment or a huge mortgage any day. Its not an investment. Buy what you play, play what you buy, never buy new. I know what broke feels like, I know what trailer park living is like, I know what a crap apartment is like. Yeah we’ve been dirt poor. We still live like it too. It made a big impression on us. But when we do treat ourselves, which is very rare, we get something nice to keep a very long time. It took 46yrs and raising two kids on every penny we made, (30yrs with my wife) to finally get a custom shop, and Im quite happy with the price I negotiated. Excited to finally own one.

Yeah, was going to say, Yamaha bought the whole thing. Safe pair of hands, in my opinion. Really like the Guild brand -- fair point from Phil of course that it's changed hands so many times that the brand fronts different things over the years -- and I think distribution has been their issue as much as anything else. Yamaha should definitely help with that side of things.

Talking about single strings, I had gotten a seven string guitar, and my local guitar store didn't have any seven strings sets, but they have singles, so they were able to make me a set.
@maxmustardman298
@maxmustardman298 Год назад
Fender CS not being able to build a 7 string sounds like a cop out to me. They are obviously able to reproduce a perfect 60s or 50s strat, and even some of the 80s of the rack stuff like the lead series reissues were pretty accurate, so whats up with that ? The og builders may not be there anymore, but there surely have to be schematics or some kind of data sets available.

Taylor and PRS are two great companies that really understand their brands. Probably because they have the same original owners and they are younger companies than fender or Gibson.
@JamesWalshBristolKids
@JamesWalshBristolKids Год назад
Suggestion: Buy 3 sets of strings that you love. Throw away nothing. Keep old strings as spares - this is so if your jammin' at midnight and the shop is closed and you break a string you can put on an old one and keep playing. I use D'Addario strings because the strings are very good and D'Addario went green.They recycle the old strings - millions of pounds in used strings are recycled by them..they are an environs friendly company - products all made in the USA.
@MichaelSheaAudio
@MichaelSheaAudio Год назад
I actually use different brands of strings on one guitar on purpose. Getting 8 string sets if you don't play in standard tuning is difficult. I play in DGDGCFAD for my own music on a Schecter with a 28" scale. So a standard D'addario 9-42 set works great and I already have them for my 6 string guitars. D'addario doesn't make the gauge of string that I want for the 8th string though, that being a 95, and the 7th being a 68 I think. So I actually use String Joy strings for the 7th and 8th string and it sounds just fine. I've tried getting a full set of strings from String Joy but I wasn't impressed with the rest of the strings.

@PhillipMcKnight - I love your weekly show, and tune in live when I can - lots of great content! Your thoughts on the psychology behind guitar decisions really hit home (this week's was the impulse buying effect during travel). Have you done a video on fixing guitar dings? Wondering if it’s easier or harder than replacing frets which I see as an advanced repair that you’ve already covered. Thanks!

1:40:20 That’s weird, because here in Europe, the high end guitars such Private Stock, Custom Shop, Murphy Lab and such, they all retain value, or sometimes even gain values over the year. They’re very rare since they’re all custom made in the US, so very little available in Europe in the first place… So, many it depends to where we live.

Had the exact same thing happen to me regarding breaking in speakers. Bought a mini recto cab (V30) to use with Boogie MkV:25. Loved it... like any speaker I've ever had it started out bright and spikey without much bottom end. Knew it would break in and wasn't worried. After a few days of playing it started sounding right. Bought another mini recto cab a few months later and it was so spikey compared to the other one I couldn't believe it. I hoped it would break in the same. Wasn't sure it would because of the drastic difference. Took a few days, but now I can't tell the difference either. So that's two identical datapoints. Theory supported! Haha.

What are your thoughts on 8 strings? I cannot deny that I love djenty and modern technical and slam stuff but I have found myself using my 8 string how you described your 7 string use the most. I like to play jazzy stuff with lower voicings and bass lines, sometimes combining bass and guitar parts, and I LOVE thumping away and using some super full chords with a lot of strings, but no one I have met shares this view. Seems like everybody really loves or really hates extended range guitars, but no one realizes that you can play any genre and do some pretty creative and relatively unique stuff with an "ERG". Do you like the low bass range and the ability to play those guitar highs aand even switch between instrument sounds (with multiple amps or digital patches)? Or do you think it's too much?

Buying a custom made guitar and then hoping to sell it later and at least get your money back is taking a big risk. When i asked a highly respected luthier to make me a Strat to my spec, he started by asking what i intended to do with the guitar, this he said makes all the difference, as the chances of finding a buyer with the same requirements are very slim, plus it won't have a well know brand name to help you sell it. He made that guiatar and i still have it, will i ever sell it, i hope not as i will be lucky to find a buyer prepared to pay a sensible price.

I've seen online I think it was amazon that you can get a pack of one single gauge string like a .008, .009 or .010. I was thinking of buying a pack of one of those. I don't usually break strings from playing, but I have occasionally broken them when restringing the guitars.

If the idea of breaking in a speaker is to soften the foam or paper edging so the cone moves more freely, why would you use a solvent like WD-40 instead of a lubricant such as Teflon?

Getting a great guitar is simple, buy any model made in Japan Jackson or Charvel, or an ESP/Ltd 1000 or higher or actual ESP boom ,,,,done. They can do ant genre well depending on pickups and sometimes model. All other stuff is a gamble, also Fender is still great but varies from guitar to guitar.

The best Les Paul's, I've either played or owned, were either light weight 50's models (1952-1957) or later ones that used maple necks, or used ash bodies. The off the shelf Les Paul's you find these days are just boring to me, as are most major guitar brands, in that the CNC revolution made guitars consistent and therefore _mediocre by definition_ .

????hey Phil,???? As for the American Guitar - it's a waste of money compared to overseas. As for speakers, I run 2 homemade cabinets I built. Using 2 of 10" Warriors, then 2 D123e JBL 12" from 1970. It's ported and sealed with a JBL 2-way crossover SF20M Sansui tweeters and piezo Horns. For travel, 1 made a single-size box with another JBL crossover SF20M with another JBL 12" from the 1990s JBL's 2130. I added a Sansui tweeter too. I also was gifted a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe Mod 3 that has a Celestion V-80. If I ever play anywhere carrying that much weight in 1 cabinet with a tube amp and a speaker is too heavy. I'll take-out the speaker and make a modified amp cabinet. The lighter the better.
