When I went to the guitar store today, I tested a bunch of high end guitars and came to the conclusion that none of them played any better than my PRS SE. However, they did look better than my SE. The fact that I made that discovery is kinda cool now because I know that if i want to buy a high end guitar, it's purely because it looks good and not because I think that it will make me a better player someway.
Definitely, I did the same thing a couple months ago. Tried like a Les Paul Standard and a $4500 Gretsch and they just felt like guitars. The guitars I have are professionally set up, so I already play good guitars. My modded Schecter Omen 6 is crazy.
I just found an older Squire bullet at a hock shop. Paid $100 and figured the kids would love it. Cleaned it up, new strings, nut, and tuners . . . Wow! Figured I'd keep going - Rounded all the frets , rolled the fingerboard, shimmed and sanded the neck. Now, I have a problem; it's too good. Even the pickups sound better than I could have expected. The stock bridge is now "floating" and with a little lubbing and fiddling, the damn thing stays in tune better than my two points on MUCH more expensive guitars. Gonna find another one and try to replicate this unicorn Bullet Strat - I'm both excited and worried that I love this Squire so much . . . anyone looking for overpriced premium guitars, cuz I may have a few by the end of this experiment?
I bought an ESP/LTD V-50 for $120 at a pawn shop 12 years ago. At the same time I owned a PRS custom 24 that I bought in 1999 for $3,000. I liked the V-50 way more than the PRS. Everything about the V-50 I liked better. I actually ended up selling the PRS back in 2020 during the Pandemic and the V-50 is my main guitar now. I also have an LTD EC-401QM. I love LTD guitars.
Me too! Have an M-400 EMG that is SO good, everytime I play it, I can't believe HOW good it is! And since the topic of "neck design" came up--I'll say that all of the ESP / LTD / Jackson "bound" necks (22 or 24 frets) are about as good as it gets!
can attest 👍, the V-50 i got (for $125AU, a couple of years ago;) has so much inherent grunt and sustain, with killer frets of course. Mine's a touch heavy and not the most comfortable to sit with, but it has soooo much grunt,...i cant think of another descriptive more appropriate:). (I put a phat-cat "p90" in the bridge on mine🤘, and it still chugs if necessary) ;Enjoy the guitar worlds sleeper sledgehammer 👍
Its funny Phil. With your question of the week. I had the OPPOSITE experience. I got the Epiphone 59 for a REALLY good price. I could not bond with it. I just felt horrible owning it for some reason.(And I REALLY wanted that guitar) About a week after I got it I found a Custom Shop R9 at the same shop ALSO for a great deal. I practically RAN to take the Epiphone back and trade it in towards the price of that R9. No hesitation at all. It was not that I thought the R9 was BETTER or that I thought the Epiphone 59 was LESSER, I just did not connect with it. It did not draw me in to play it...that R9 gets played non stop! A Friend of mine has a saying "You like what you like" If the Epi does it for you, outstanding, if the R9 is your thing, more outstanding. On the flip side, I have an Epiphone ES335 Pro that blows away EVERY Gibson 335 I try. Just annihilates them. I would play that, an Epiphone Sheraton and an Epiphone Riveara over a Gibson CS 335 any day of the WEEK, and I have found some real honeys! Its just what floats your boat.
Correct, and if comparing a sample size of one or three, it's not even known fact it's empirical so we can never say Gibson or Epiphone is definitely better. Most guitar sales are emotional...you can pay a lot for a signature CS 335 hoping it buys you some magic, but what if it's lifeless compared to a really great Overseas made equivalent? Epiphone is famous for making some great semihollow guitars. They take a lot of hand work anyhow.
Forget free shipping, if StewMac just had reasonable shipping I would be happy. I just bought a Fret Rocker, a tiny little item that they sent in an envelope through USPS. Just about $13 in shipping. There's no way that little item shipped in a little envelope through the post office costs 13 bucks to ship.
Sooo true. We sold a perfectly good USA Les Paul to pay for a Chinese Epiphone(black Custom,new style headstock). Installed identical Gibson pups in it which revealed that the Epiphone was easily twice the guitar for a 3rd the price. Amazing Quality Control from China. Blew my mind...I fell in love with a Chinese neck😢
Thanks for the thoughts on neck design! The Fender "C" is as close to "default" as it gets for me, personally; but really, I tend to prefer whatever neck best matches the guitar it's attached to. One of my favorite-ever "matches" was the "baseball bat" neck that my old buddy's c.1960 single "dog-ear" P-90 equipped L/P Jr. had. It posessed mojo that inspired the agressive playing it was suited for! The thin-taper "C"s on Kramer Super-Strats match well also!

Hi Philip and everyone, I think Philip is absolutely right about the Mexican Fenders. I play bass. I play a lot of vintage or higher prized USA Fenders. Been doing so for more than 35 years, but the last few years I’ve gotten a little bit scared to bring them to all gigs. I got two ‘21 Mexican Fenders: similar colour P and J basses (because I always go back and forth between P’s and J’s, I’m the restless type... 😉) Both Mexican Fenders have maple fingerboards and are the same colour. I was thinking I had to change out both their pickups and electronics, but I was wrong. The pickups are totally ok. I decided to just change out the pots and wiring and output jacks. Worked out great for less than €30,- (about 40 US dollars, I guess). That’s for both basses! I only had to purchase Hipshot D-tuners for both basses, because I need those for my music. The only thing most Mexican Fenders used to need is a good set up. Having worked at a music store while in college, that’s an easy thing, when all hardware and the trussrod are great. On both Mexican Fenders everything worked great. I was impressed by the easy way both the hardware and the trussrod were functioning!! I play both of these basses all the time now on every gig I play. I’ve even used them on various recordings. I’m a semi-pro bassist and I’m totally happy with my ‘21 Mexican Fenders! I did not buy them online. I went to a few (bigger and smaller) musicstores and picked them myself. That worked out great! These basses were about €850,- a piece. But, I had the chance to sell a Ibanez TS-10 (my mother got me in 1988 because it was cheap 😉) to a John Mayer fan for a stupid summ of money I won’t mention here, 🤣. 🖖
15:20 I’ve come to the conclusion that my preferred neck shape is whatever is used on the Wolfgang’s and that I prefer narrow nut widths and I lot of time I find anything over 1.650 a little fatiguing and I can’t play anything over with a 12in radius without hand pain
I had some issues with stew mac but when i contacted customer support they were more then helpful and straitened everything out to my liking with zero hastle
I’m not surprised to hear that an inexpensive guitar could be better than an expensive one. Aesthetic issues aside, a more expensive guitar build will produce a more consistent result, but the stars can align or misalign on any individual build. Also Tommy Tedesco boasted that he recorded often using a $50 Mexican Guitar. Of course, he played like Tommy Tedesco, but he also recognized the quality of that $50 guitar when he picked it up.
Now days, the use of CNC construction methods, the stars no longer need to align. Guitars of all price ranges are now nearly of equal consistency. I've played enough guitars of the last twenty years, as well as countless guitars of the 70s, 80s and 90s to have a very large frame of reference. Test it for yourself. Go out and try guitars recent and older. Notice how guitars from somewhere in the 00s, don't have that noticeable gap between a 1200.00 and 300.00 guitar. During the 80s and 90s that gap is very noticeable, excluding the really well made Japanese guitars, Tokai, Aria, etc.
I’ve got an Epiphone Les Paul Custom and a Gibson Les Paul Custom worth 3 times what the Epiphone costs. I enjoy both equally and might even play the Epiphone more lol. I’ve found my most played guitars aren’t always my most expensive ones. That’s fine, I enjoy all my guitars and each has something cool or unique about it that makes them worth having and playing. I’ve also got a Gibson standard 60s and considered replacing it with a Custom Shop R0 but when I tried a few in the store I didn’t notice much difference to justify the price of the Custom Shop over my standard 60s. Play what you like and what inspires you most and don’t feel pressured to feel a certain way about a guitar just based on price. I’ve come across budget guitars that resonate and play like butter and expensive custom shop guitars that did nothing for me.
Hey Phillip, I purchased a Yamaha D 325 dread for a beater guitar and make it a cosmetically worry-free axe. Then I got to reading the spec sheet about the laminate top which is 3 layers of spruce. Yamaha, they build a cadillac tank of a guitar. I started to do research on the sound board and scalloping and x bracing. Well, low and behold, I came across an old Luthier who figured out scalloped bracing really isn't the best way to tone the top. What he did is called "tapered bracing". He starts the tapper from the center of the x brace and tapers to the outside edge. So I did it the my Yamaha. I left one inch level at the center of each brace and tapered it to the outside 1/8". It has a slight arch downward and is sanded smooth and clean. There are two 2"braces near the sound hole that I nearly eliminated and then strung it up with a set of Martin bronze 10/46's after I vac'd and blew out the shavings and sawdust. Previously, I shellaced the whole interior for better projection which helped a bunch but it still sounded tight and dead. I lowed the action real tight and let the string seat well. Oh my ! The smaller string guage gave each note and chords more definition. The bottom end roars crisply and the mids and highs are very clear. Way more sustain even with the plastic saddle. Epiphone J45, eat your heart out ! Fretting up the neck sounds just like open notes. Clear as a bell. The biggest struggle was the slight bruising of both my forearms carving thru the sound hole. But I did it in about 3 hours and it was worth the results. For $ 139.oo purchase price, I now have a high quality sounding guitar. The top hasn't moved at all once strung, Yamaha bracing is heavy so it's not moving at all. Just thought I'd share my love of guitar and tinkering. Love your channel. Yer awesome !
Answering the question, I have an Ibanez Gio, which I bought in 2007. I retired it on 2012 due to several issues, worn frets were part of those issues. Guitar got restored in 2021 with new frets in the mix 😊. It reaaaaally needed them, specifically for the 12th, 19th, 7th and 9th.
I know you're a guitar guy, I'm a bassist. I've played Ric's for over 40 years and finally broke down and bought a MIM Fender Jazz (active). Love love love that guitar, plays and sounds fantastic! Well, as a purely impulse buy, I picked up a Spirit by Steinberger bass a few weeks ago. It plays and sounds just as good as my other guitars at a fraction of the price. Just to have, I also own an Epiphone 335 and an Epiphone Hummingbird....To your point, budget guitars can be just as good as any high dollar model if it makes you happy.

Phil, let me tell you more about Loog Guitars because you should be aware of what they’re doing and why they’re a big deal 12-13 years into being a successful guitar company for kids (primarily, lol). Loog guitars are amazing. In 2017, before I was sick at a time when I could afford it, I backed Loog’s campaign for a Mini, as well as the larger acoustic and electric Pro model with three strings on Kickstarter for my nephews. The Mini has gone through three “active” (lol) boys, and it’s held up exceptionally well except for some kiddie relic’ing and a nut that fell out by the third kid (the company replaced it for a few bucks, and I glued it in easily). The two older boys are 5 and 7 now, and they’re ready to move to the Pro models. Loog guitars all come with access to 100% FREE educational print and digital materials. As a former child educator, I can assure you that the materials are super engaging and fun, and the kids look forward to doing it. The Loog program teaches essential skills, theory, tabs, etc. and even has tabs for popular songs adapted for the Loog’s three strings. That’s a huge thing because children will willingly want to play as they get older. Loog is always adding to their content. They also offer private lessons with a teacher and free access to a basic class with a teacher to help kids and their parents get started. I’m sure some people buy into that, but the app and print materials are totally enough to help kids start playing and learning, kind of like apps for adults like Gibson, Fender Play, Yousician, etc. - but it’s geared to children and can be done with little to no involvement by their parents. 😮 Btw, the three strings are the GBe strings because children can play most chords with one finger and then it transitions to a six string well as they get older. This can be very helpful to 3-5 year olds whose fine motor skills may not be coordinated enough for 6 strings. Only dealing with three strings also simplifies skills and concepts that can be difficult for little kids to understand. It makes the instrument more approachable and helps children make greater gains - if they see success, they will be excited to play and want to keep learning the instrument as they get older. The Fender partnership does make those branded Loog instruments more expensive, but those instruments are specifically build in the Fender factory. Are they better than the standard Loogs? I can’t comment on that. The standard Loog instruments all function like really guitars and are made well. You can intonate the electric guitars and set the action. They all have bone nuts and saddles. The acoustic models use nylon strings while the electric all use steel. Some of the electric models have a build in amp, some use a jack and external amp. The electric pickups are quite good for what they are, if you ask me. Loog guitars all sound like actual instruments rather than toys because they are made with high quality materials, can be adjusted like adult guitars, and are manufactured with precision unlike most starter guitars for little kids. Perhaps the new Fender branded ones are better, but I see no problem with any of the Loog models I’ve given to my nephews. Btw, I’ve heard SO many adults buy both the three string and six string Loog models to use as travel guitars, and they love them. I think this could make for an interesting video, actually. Maybe you can reach out to Loog to review some of their instruments/content and compare the regular guitars to the Fender ones. This would be useful information for parents, grandparents, aunts/uncles, etc. whether they’re buying for kids or themselves. It’s a very different thing, the founder is super nice as I recall from that Kickstarter. The company has been around for 12-13 years, so they’re obviously doing something right. The founder invented Loog as a part of a grad school project. He then launched his first model successfully on Kickstarter in 2011 and follow up with better and more models. It might even be interesting to interview him so you can get his perspective on the company and it’s successes. Sorry this is so long, but this company is really worth your time, Phil. Expensive vs cheap guitars are like teen movies. People stop and stare at the expensive guitar that shows up to the party, but once you really get to know a cheap guitar you realize you don’t want or need anything else.
I always thought the higher end guitars were for show anyway .. you gave up playing, got a proper job, and bought a pretty expensive thing to hang on the wall to show people that youre still cool.. just like every wealthy van halen fan who picked up a guitar once, has a frankenstrat on their office wall now. Id love to own a suhr or a keisel.. but not for 4k ,, no thanks.
I don’t have any expensive guitars, but I have a Squier Bullet Mustang and after a basic tune-up (intonation, string radius, neck relief), a fret dressing/polishing, and a couple of passes on the back of the neck with fine grit sandpaper I can’t put the thing down. It’s surf green, only cost $160, and it’s awesome. I wanted a short scale guitar with humbuckers and I nearly threw my back out grabbing an Epiphone off the wall so here I am with no regrets.
Most of my necks are raw wood. I love the feel of the raw wood. I only apply a very light coat of either lemon oil or linseed oil to protect from moisture. I've never had a problem with any of my guitar necks and they feel fantastic.
I’m practicing and I just had a thought about barre chords… all of what you say is totally true but one other thing that’s important is string spacing at the end of the neck you’re doing the chord. I have an acoustic with really wide spacing at the nut and I find that really difficult to deal with while my other guitars have much tighter string spacing at the nut making it a lot easier. The good news is if you have a guitar you like otherwise you can change the nut and see how you like it. I have really skinny, boney fingers so I prefer the strings closer together anyway; although I’m comfortable with standard Fender spacing.
I personally wouldn't mind seeing a Keith Roscoe / Badlands collaboration. That guy builds very nice basses these days but he used to make some of the coolest 80's shred superstrat guitars you can find.
Hi Phillip McKnight, The profile of the back of the neck has something to do with chording and playing single notes. It's better if it fits the palm of your hand. So you can get your fingers completely on the fretboard.
Hi Philip, What is strange, is the following, I think: I’m only two years older than you are and I live in The Netherlands. But, when I was growing up and became more aware of music (leading into me choosing the bass as my instrument, because my father would not let me play the drums 😄), say 1984/1985, both Lukather and Knopfler were all over the serious music magazines that were available in my country (mostly English and Dutch magazines). Knopfler, because Dire Straits were huge here from 1980 untill they disbanded, and Lukather because of his band Toto, wich was huge too in the ‘80’s! You’re absolutely right about all the thousands of recordings Lukather did as a session man, up untill this day. All the focus here was totally on his band Toto. So, both were allover the magazines in Europa back than. I guess that started with both bands’ first albums (about ‘78). Were both Dire Straits and Toto perhaps less popular in the US back than? Or were there other bands or artists more popular? We had all the great and popular US artists of the day here too. Many a time before they broke the US (like Prince or Madonna). And we had Queen and Van Halen, wich was great! The rest was like Duran Duran, Wham, Level42, Mr Mister and all the others. Later came Bon Jovi and Guns ‘N Roses. But, both Knopfler and Lukather were guitar gods here in the more serious guitar/music magazines big time! From the Grunge age on, both the US and Europe loved the same bands at the same time more, I guess. Now, there’s all kinds of guitar gods and goddesses in all styles, wich is such a great thing! It’s a shame though, that complete albums aren’t that important anymore. Those were what we grew up on. The youngsters, my students too, pick individual songs most often, like it was back in the ‘50’s and early ‘60’s. 🖖
I have a $200 Squier Stratocaster and an $400 Aria Pro II singlecut and both of them get more play time than my most expensive guitar that cost more than both of them put together. Both of them play great and sound great and are they fun to play, it happens.

My Ibanez series S guitar is one of the best guitars I’ve ever owned as it was off the shelf. It weighs three or 4 pounds, plays faster than anything I’ve ever played before and the sound is unimaginable. For a $400 guitar, it is a steel. To the point where I actually sold all of my custom expensive guitars, because I only want to use the Ibanez. I both new and old guitar players all the time, don’t simply purchase something because of a name and a price… What they are selling you is an overpriced off the shelf that somebody made in the USA as opposed to Taiwan. You can always upgrade any guitar you have to sound like any other guitar in the world. I’ll stick to my opinion that I’ve always had… Wood type does not matter on electric guitars, for anything other than looks. The tuners, nut, bridge, pick ups and strings do. You can have the most expensive guitar in the world and the hardware on it will ruin it. Buy what you like, make it what you want and enjoy it for what it is. You have to plug it in anyways, either to an amp or pedal board and through those… You can make it sound any way you like. After all, it’s tone and playability that matter the most. Everything else is simply for show or bragging rights.
The guitar I play the most is one I got a few months ago, and it is the least I ever paid for a guitar, even before you adjust for inflation Now I know it’s not as good as some others, but I love playing it And I love playing them all
Pertaining to the 250/500k for singles/hums question I also like to use a 500k pot with two .470k resistors going from the hot of each single coil to its lug on the switch. Been wiring my guitars as well as customers guitars this way for a long time.

I have a guitar made in 2003, a Fender Strat-o-Sonic. I got it used, and played it a lot for about 5 years. When I got it back to playing shape again recently, I noticed it needs a reset, or at least a really thorough deep re-crown. I think they may be too deep though. I also have a Squier Jagmaster. I got it used but it needs a regret as well, it was made in 2007, IIRC. Me playing about an hour a day, I think I could go through a set of fret in 3-5 years, but I don't know for sure. I've still never had one done because I keep intending to learn to do it myself. I've leveled and polished but haven't ever recrossed yet.
I got an s2 594 Thinline used a few months ago and it is fantastic. Put some Thornbuckers in it and had the saddles filed down a hair to get a little more adjustment on the upper frets, but it plays super smooth and sounds fantastic.

I’ve played the Fender Loog. If anything, it makes a player think of chords/triads on the higher strings instead of relying/using barre chords or power chords As far as playing for an experienced player? It’s small w ukulele sized frets. Not exactly made for big bends. Benefits? You get a unique sound from the pickup placement and no overtones from the other 3 strings
I kind of wish I snapped up the Badlands holoflash, I like the guitar and it would've only been $4000 Canadian or so… For a really finely put together guitar. I basically want a great 1980s style 22 fret SuperStrat, and basic balanced pickup layout is really good. It's close to the price of a production line PRS Myles Kennedy (without HSC) but much more special and unique. There were literally a few moments to decide if I wanted to follow the link and punch in my credit card. The stock inventory was dwindling away by the minute. And this for a guitar I had just learned about!

I bought an old 2011 Schecter Solo 6 (~$300) and it is every bit as good as my PRS S2! Things that make you go hmmm! What I learned is more expensive is not always better. Hoping this post shows up as I haven't been able to post here in a long while!
Some of those session guys from the 80's and 90's were doing columns in the Guitar magazines. You heard them on lots of records but you didn't really know who they were.

I have a core PRS Custom 24 that is dented and covered in buckle rash and even some of the finish where my arm rests is worn away, I play the hell out of it. I recently got the DGT SE and it's playability gives my Custom a run for its money, part of me wants to retire my Custom and grab a 2nd DGT as a backup for my gigs.
I heard Liona Boyd quote Segovia (I think). so I'll paraphrase "them". If I don't practice one day I know. If I don't practice two days my fingers know. If I don't practice three days everyone knows. or something like that.
Paul Reed Smith needs to lighten up. If someone shows him a pristine PRS it means they spent a BOATLOAD of money on it and have treated it like gold(Same as you were saying about your R9). If he really wants to see beaten up PRSes he needs to wait about 10-15 years and ask John Mayer to show him his first Silver Sky. I am SURE John beats the hell out of THAT.
If we are a little upset when we cause even minor damage to our guitars, it shows how well they are made to look fantastic. We are lucky to have so many beautiful guitars to choose from at all price levels.
You mentioned having a guitar for more than 5 years and asking if it needs a refrer. I have owned one guitar for about 26 years. It was my first serious guitar and another guitar for 15 years and a third for 7 years. They all have dents in some frets, but I don't notice any issues while playing so I've not refretted any of them.
my expensive guitars generally crap all over my cheap guitars but there are a few exceptions, biggest is probably some of my old Rondo Music guitars, I have an old SX P90 Strat that has crushed every Fender MIM i have owned and my Agile ALs are dead even with my LP Studios but cost a fraction of the price. My PRS SE is also one of the best sounding guitars i have ever owned.
Back in the early 90's I had a Mexican Strat that I liked better than my USA Strat. My Les Paul Studio was better than my buddy's Standard, and he agreed. Some guitars just come together well and that's it.
My Cheap Guitar Is Better Than my expensive Guitar? Don't I know it! my 300.00 Jet JT350 kills my 900.00 Baja telecaster. Absolutely slays it. My initially cheap Reverend (they were cheap when first were made in Korea or where in Asia) is *still* better than anything else. As long as we're talking about guitars made using CNC, then yes, cheap guitars are as good or better. Bye-bye Gibson and PRS. Now for handmade guitars, Hahn and similar, those are still as good as it gets. Sometimes the cheap guitars miss the mark, though. My G&L ASAT Tribute, while being a really great guitar, almost as good as an American G&L, has little flaws, such as the saddle adjustment screws being uneven in the installation in the bridge. They aren't exactly even. fortunately it doesn't come through in the playing, adjustment or intonation. But I've had expensive American guitars with neck pockets that have gaps, fret sprout and more. The idea that American guitars made via CNC are superior is a *MYTH*

I go the local guitar C store and look at more expensive guitars (intermediate) and they are unplayable. I never understand why guitar stores don't setup the guitars half decent, they might sell more.

I had thumb surgery and was not able to play for almost 3 months. Now I am rebuilding strength in the fingers and hand. Starting from scratch in what my fingers need it do. It is so frustrating being my index finger is still swollen and I cannot play bar chord. And just before the surgery I won a $2300 guitar from Pitbull Audio. 🥴🥴🥴. Lucky to win but could not play it 😞😞😞🎸🎸🎸.
Oh man fantastic video and lots of info. Absolute facts about ed Sheeran man....I got back into guitar 6/7 years ago because of ed Sheeran and the loop pedal stuff he does. Annnnnnnnd now I own 13 guitars , a JVM 100w , an Engl, an Orange and three other amps 😑😑😑
I'm still wanting to buy a guitar from my birth year. what brands are easiest to identify the manufacturer dates? I know Gibson and how to read/verify but who else makes it easy? needs to have been around in 1975 btw lol
Great thing about cheaper guitars is it doesn’t feel wrong to sand them and paint them, put stickers on them. The nice ones need to age on their own, unless you need to personalize a fancy work horse. Just my opinion, after a little experience
For the guy that wanted to know if he should sell his big brand name (Big 3) guitars before people lose interest- well if you’re in the business of buying selling to make money then I guess maybe yes but if like most of us, you’re in the business of finding guitars that you like and will play then it really doesn’t matter whether it costs a lot or not or if other people will loose interest - if you like keep it and if you don’t like it get rid of it.
