Daft Punk are also masters of repetition. Most sounds repeated quickly get annoying if not obnoxious. I know if a sound is good by how many times I'm able to listen to it back to back. Once I tought a britney spears song was pretty catchy. After 5 times my ears were bleeding.
Sht fcked me up, woke up to screenshot from a friend with the news of Miuras Death, I immediately listened to this song, looked at the clouds, and the fcking sky was just as beautifull as when Guts fought Griffith for the first time in 1997 on the hill. Then I bowed and thanked Miura for this creation. NO IM NOT CRYING!
it was a cold rainy morning, when i woke up, there was still fog on the window, and i see... "Kentaro Miura has passed away" i can still feel the heart sink from that moment even now
@@sitinthebit2089 I also looked at the sky while listening to this. It was the most beautiful sky I've ever seen between the lighting of the sunset and the cloud formation. He inspired me to find my dream, and I hope the same for all of us.
@@arthurw1604 like I've said before "no surprise", i'm just appreciating how well they captured his character with this theme along with my agreement that he also embodies @Law_ statement. I might have needed to articulate that better, my apologies.
“Born of death, raised by pain, matured in violence, and defiant in the face of death, clinging desperately to life. You call him a monster. I say he’s the most human of all of us.”
That's the beauty of Guts, he doesn't care about the carnage. He loses himself in battle until he couldn't afford to anymore. He's just a human being looking for his place in the world. More than anything, he's human.
Miura said himself he likes to listen to the 90's ost when drawing berserk, i myself listened to it a few times while reading the manga, magical experience
Miura was a Hirasawa fan and listened to his music while drawing. He specifically requested Hirasawa to make the soundtrack for the 97 anime for this reason.
you know a song is damn good when someone who simply knows nothing about the series/movie or whatever it is from gets so many things right only by explaining their feelings and emotions it conveys
Im that person. I have never watch or read about Berserk. But only because in one comment another videk people say guts quote a bout stumble a stone in the path and encourage to stand up again while suggesting this song get me. I open the guts theme and listen.. till now i didnt watch berserk but i love this song. It mkes me cry everytime because im going through a hard time.
What makes this themw so fucking amazing is that it actually understand what is really Guts, someone could just have gone for some epic heavy metal badass shit, but Guts is more than just an edgy swordsman
The world around him has abused and viciously attacked him, making it absolute necessary for him to harden just to struggle to stay alive. But when Guts is alone, he's often deep in thought, staring into the distance and often cradling his sword for comfort. He's wounded and emotionally fragile but when shown compassion and care, he softens and shows care in turn.
Yeah the composer’s just that skilled. Guts is a vagrant looking for a way out the darkness but is very human and flawed; he has felt pain, heart break, betrayal, cried but never gave up and continued dusting off his psyche to keep walking. His theme song is just perfect for it
It is something that's installed right at the beginning of the manga : Guts is violent, but more than anything he is sad and tired. He doesn't want massacre, he wants peace and the recovery of the only person he truly loved : Casca. Honestly, if Griffith had just asked for his pardon (with honesty) I don't think Guts would have done it but he would at least be a bit appeased because he would know that the humanity of Griffith is still there, and because he knows his dream and he's his best friend. That's why I love the last chapters, Guts is becoming wise, he has a student, close friends he trusted to the point of placing Casca in their hands and also a "master" or at least someone that knows his pain: the Skeleton Knight. He evolved from a solo stone-hearted bastard (Berserker ?) to a wise, collected but no less determined warrior that's on his way to control his demons.
guts is an allegory for pushing through and back against a cruel and harsh reality he is in real ways relatable and inspiring and in other ways his problems are much bigger.
If you're going to watch the anime, I definitely recommend the 1997 version or the movies. The song in the video is only used in the 1997 one. Whatever you do though, don't watch the 2016/17 version, it's skips over things and does berserk an injustice. The best experience though, would be to read the manga, which is just a masterpiece! Love the video btw!!
@@alucard197 though the 2017 version does have shotty cgi, the main reason not to watch it is that it misrepresents the story and gets the tone and atmosphere wrong. It also changes the story and skips arks. Plus one would need to watch the movies/1997 version to understand it.
"You're going to be alright. You just stumbled over a stone in the road. It means nothing. Your goal lies far beyond this, doesn't it? I'm sure you'll overcome this. You'll walk again...soon."'' -Guts 1997
The fact that you managed to pick up on so many of the things that represent Guts' character while having little to no knowledge about the world and story of Berserk is a testament of both this song's quality as well as your skill as a composer. Bravo. Can't wait to see you react to more Berserk soundtracks.
always find it interesting how the big guy with the huge fuck-off sword who once murdered a hundred men on his own has such a calming yet undeniably-sad theme like this - really ties in with his character, how underneath the brutality and violence is someone with trauma and sadness
@@shimshawcreamtime2845 true, but its still worth it, how far you got to right now, are you reading the berserk prototype or just going straight into the main story?
So the TL;DR of Berserk (which, I HIGHLY recommend the manga. It's fantastic, and has numerous influences on pop culture, even here in the west) is it's the story of Guts, a man who's life started when he was born from his mother's hung corpse and has only really gone downhill from there, yet he always manages to pick himself up and keep moving forward despite the weight of the world crushing down on him. The anime covers the Golden Age Arc, the part generally considered to be the best moments of Guts' life, and his theme generally plays during deep moments of Guts' introspection, usually over how, after a life full of either complete solitude or heavy abuse from those closest to him, he's finally found people he can call friends, comrades, brothers in arms, or even family near the end of it all, and how he now has a life ahead of him that isn't just swinging a sword and fighting for his life.
Water is a symbolic representation of transformation, growth, rebirth in some elements of artistic expression. Angels Egg is the perfect example of water being just that, the music in that anime movie does as well reflect an elemental aspect of storytelling. It would be very fitting for Gut's theme to feature an aquatic ambience, as his growth is fluid, authentic and fills in each part of him like water in the gaps.
@@sleepyfilipino it was something along the lines "death is not the end. More to come." I'm paraphrasing. In likelihood it means anime, games, projects, etc. Were already finalized and in the works. Since it's Hirasawa saying this I aasume it means he would be doing music for whatever the project is. Possibly a new game or anime season/movie.
@@sleepyfilipino His statement goes, "Mr. Miura is no longer a being that exists in this physical place. While we won't be able to talk going forward, your spirit will be with me through time and space in my memories and my heart. Mr Miura. As always, I'm in your debt." ~ Susumu Hirasawa
@@mangagnome9764 I feel you. It's been 13 hours since I heard the news, I've tried to fall asleep twice, tried to wake up from this longest, most vivid, and most painful dream I am having. But it hasn't come true yet.
24:09 You have no idea how accurate that is. My favorite panel from the manga has Guts saying "Have I ever wielded a sword this heavy" where he's not talking about the weight of his sword, but rather the weight of his struggle to keep himself alive in order to protect someone.
5:34 Gut's life is underwater metaphorically. He can't escape from harsh reality and destiny while he watches others living to their fullest. He's never happy because the only friend he had betrayed him and killed everyone who helped him get to shallow grounds. After the Eclipse happened, he sank to the bottom of the sea. He's so filled with hatred and sadness that it's the only thing that keeps him going. People compare Guts with anime characters who have gone through misfortunes and torture but Guts is the character that is only human. He never gets away from his past because he can't.
I said “so good” just seconds before he did, that says something about the quality of that beautiful piece of music, when it connects people throughout the world, it transcends just being a song. This emotion is only highlighted in the 1997 anime Berserk and was the reason I watched the show I also read the manga. It was beautiful both the manga and the anime, I highly recommend watching/reading this piece because it will bring you only more emotion to that piece of music. The characters will also make you feel like you were apart of their story and life. I wish you luck whoever reads this, any struggles you are going through keep on fighting. Sincerely a fellow struggler.
Everyone talks about Berserk inspiring Dark Souls, but people always miss Berserk's numerous inspirations on Zelda: Ocarina of Time. I'm glad to see that you immediately picked up on the inspiration the opening theme of that game took from this piece. It also goes way beyond music though. The more you look at OOT the more it becomes apparent that the people working on it were big Berserk fans.
Why can't they make an anime that perfectly captures berserk as a whole and guts as a character. This guy just by hearing a song and one still image captured all of who guts is ; why is it so hard for any studios ?
The composer of the song is Susumu Hirasawa and I'm super fan of his. He is actually kind of a new age artist. Hirasawa is very fond of repetition especially since most of his songs are extremely elaborate and complex. Gats is an oddity in his discography because it carries itself like his usual music with the intense complexity but it's so simple. Glad you enjoyed the track! It's one of my favorites Edit: the song also speaks very closely to Guts(the character in the thumbnail). It speaks of his emotions fully be it love, happiness, friendships, struggles, and sadness.
This is the third time my interests have intersected with his work. Passed by a "Big Brother" cover on my way to discovering a UTAU artist with no name, found "Logic Air Force" through MADs, and now this. May just call for a deeper dive.
GRIFFITH!!! Edit: I would have never guessed only a few months after making this silly comment that Master Miura would tragically pass away. Rest in piece to the greatest Mangaka of our time. Although his story may be unfinished, his legacy and the spirit of Guts will remain in all of us to carry on. Live every day to it's fullest, be the master of your own fate. Die doing what you love instead of something you hate. If times are tough and the cards seem stacked against you, persevere like Guts. Persevere and fight back like Miura would have wanted. Thank you Kentaro Miura.
Now become one of us Atlas, become a struggler, watch Berserk 1997 and finish it up by catching up with the manga, we shall welcome you with open arms brother. That aside, gotta give credit where its due, your analysis is perfect as always, and you summed up Guts' character perfectly without even knowing him. Also the song is very aquatic IMO because it's supposed to make you feel drowned. Also you love Piano so you gotta do Giorno's Theme
I hope that you will react to more music from Berserk 97, as is is very unique. If not, for sure check them in your own time. Also, I really recommend other works of the composer, Susumu Hirasawa. His style is really something.
On a superficial view one could be puzzled as to why a violent and strong charachter is matched to such a melanchiolic and spiritual theme like this one. But Hirasawa got deeper and understood perfectly the complexity , struggle and pain of the charachter, and wrote a theme that encaplsuates the essence of this mighty and yet fragile hero, struggling to find his place in a world that seems to have never wanted him from the birth. This for me is the greatness of this song, this is a picture of guts spirit made with musical notes. The rest of the ost is just as incredible and effective in reflecting the tone of the world, i mean just listen to tracks like "beherit" "earth" "murder", and the adrenaline pumping "forces", they are not just a generally good fit for the material they are written for, they ARE the spirit and essence of that world. Please give the ost a full listen you won't regret it and don't forget the imho magnificent track "sign" specifically made by Hirasawa for the ps2 game.
This is so cool to hear from a professional! I love that it's easy to just think of Gut's as big anime sword man but he has so much internal conflict and sadness. I think this theme captures him well.
@Dingus Balingus Really bro? I'd be shedding tears during my sets and people would be like "who's this punk bitch already crying during his warmups" LOL
@Dingus Balingus you hit the nail on the head, that's my favorite part of that track. Maybe instead of counting my reps out loud I'll scream CASCA and GRIFFITH every rep
I think the thing that hit me most with Guts' Theme is that it sounds like a song you've heard before, a long time ago, which makes it hit even harder.
I'll forever be amazed how this song just has a way of getting through to people and touching them, no matter who they are or how much context they have.
"Murder" from berserk 1997 is a soundtrack that encapsulate all the events of the eclipse. It's so brutal, so heartbreaking... I can't express how much I feel the despair and the frustrated wish to live as everything goes wrong with that soundtrack. Plz consider to listen and react to this one. Also, nice reaction to the Guts theme! Man, I love your content 👍👍
"It gave me goosebumps" thats the only answer i need from this reaction!!Its amazingly calm if u consider his life and it leaves u with ur imagination for the char even if u dont rly know him or read the story!
I loved your style of analysing and how you express the emotions that you felt when you heard Guts' theme, and i have to say that this track is so powerful and it made you feel and understand what place Guts can potentionaly come from. It is as you said, music can tell stories, and Guts' theme told you his story so accurately without you even watching the anime. I loved your video! Keep up the amazing work!
