@Sam Yes, English is more phonetic than French plus English words are a lot easier to pronounce than French. WIth French, you have to work so hard just to get the pronunciation right. With English, it's not quite like that.

I think that English spread party because of technical qualities. And Anglophone influence in the world was probbly helped by the easeof learning basic Engish. I live in France and I see so many places where English is used because it fits the need. English has a short alphabet, no accents, no genders, simple conjugation and tense formation, a huge vocabulary with many short crisp words. You can add a new word to Engish, and use it as noun, verb, adjective without any adaptation.

This was very fair, accurate and well done. I've heard others speak of the spread of English as if it is oppressive. Thanks to the economic forces that have resulted in the spread of English, someone from, for example, an African country can speak to and get know someone from China. I think it's a good thing that people from so many different countries are taught English as a second language. It can bring people together.

I agree with your thesis. Nice video. I think that business is a really big reason. I've taught English around the world. Business and economic motivate people to learn English. Businesses also provide free English language training to employees in many countries. Lots of international companies like Samsung in Korea, Honda in Japan, etc. provide English training to staff so that they can communicate with foreign business people. Also, American and British companies have a big presence in the world. E.g. IBM, Apple, Coke, Boeing, DHL, Shell Oil, Exxon, Walmart, etc. These companies employ a lot of people all around the world. A person might be an indonesian working for IBM, so he/she learns English just by interacting with IBM co-workers around the world.

English is growing in the Indian Subcontinent at a rapid pace. Proficiency in English is thought to be synonymous with growth and development. Within 2 generations almost everyone in the Subcontinent will be able to speak in English and that will mean that the Indian Subcontinent will reap massive benefits of globalization. English will rule the world for decades in future.
@WitchMedusa

Decades maybe even forever. The internet allows for accents to be immortalized which may slow or halt the evolution of languages. I wouldn't say English is fully cemented yet, but with the internet rapidly spreading if nothing changes to the world power structure in the next 2 decades I think English will become the language of humanity.

Some of my ancestors were also Norman French, as well as Anglo-Saxon; what is your point?--English was still created in England. English is considered a "Germanic" language because its syntax and most frequently used vocabulary is predominantly Scandinavian/German. If the Spanish language became dualistic and also used Russian origin words to expand its level of expression, then Spanish still wouldn't be a slavic language.

Slightly disappointed, it seems too simplistic (and it ignored Wales at the start!). I think there are important points not included like the agenda of the empire to spread English culture and English's flexibility to integrate foreign vocab and grammar, which restricted French, Turkish, German language development more in their colonies.

English is the toughest language with the fewest words. We as Indians are taught English from the get-go, that's why we say that English is the easiest language whereas it is not. Spanish is a lot easier than English.

You can tell Japan is a smart country because "English" isn't widely used in the country. Instead, they prioritize their own language and yet manage to be one of the most developed countries of the world.

Why has English developed as a world language?....... - Answer: just because of USA´s power, without USA´s contribution english language would be right now spoken by 120-150 millions worldwide (which are the english speakers created worldwide through the British Empire). So without USA´s contribution english language would be right now spoken by 120-150 millions, just like is: French, spoken by around 270 millions Portuguese, spoken by around 250 Russian, spoken by 220 Japanish, spoken by 130 German, spoken by around 100 Italian, spoken by around 70-80 millions. Etc If USA´s main language was french, now the french would be the global language, if german now the german would be the global language, if bulgarian........ now the bulgarian language would be the global language. Right now spanish language is the second most spoken language in USA, with around 80 millions of hispanos along the USA territory. It is expected they to be around a half of total USA´s population for 2050. Therefore by the moment when spanish is also an official language in USA, spanish will be also a global language and even will exceed english cos spanish is the second most spoken native language in the world, reaching every continent, plus it is easier to be learned by chinese, slavic, arabian, african and japanish populations than the english language (spanish is readed the way it is written, just like the african or slavic languages, the arabic, the japanish or the chinese). By the other hand, if we combine spanish with the other 2 mutual understandable languages for the spanish speakers: italian and portuguese, the whole comunity of total speakers worldwide exceeds the 800 millions of speakers, and obviously, to the rest of the romance languages speakers (that´s, french and romanian speakers), it is easier to learn spanish than english......, in despite of english is influenced by french around a 30% due to the french dominion over England during 200 consecutive years after the norman invasion. USA is a kind of cultural amplifier for the whole world due to its political, economical and military power .
@josemaj.5ona989
@josemaj.5ona989 7 лет назад
:-D , I´m, really lauging.... By the case USA hadnt ever existed the way it is today (tha´s, as a english speaking country), the english language would be spoken by 200 millions of speakers as the most..... (that´s, by the people from Canda, Australia, Uk, New Zeland and Ireland.....). The british empire never spreaded the britihs language like the spanish empire did with the spanish. The british empire was just a comercial power upon its colonies. The spanish empire was a cultural power to bring the spanish culture everywhere. This is the main diference between the spanish and the british empire, and so today there are more spanish native speakers than english native speakers I´m sorry..... :-D . So the real reason of the english is what it is today is only the power of USA, the british empire standing without USA would have made today the english to be like the portuguese or french in number of native speakers, dont lie to yourself......

As an american i will symay you are lying. 80m ppl in the US don't speak spanish at all. Maybe 38-40 which 50% are first or 2nd generation immigrant by 3rd generation spanish is all gone. 45 of the 50 states have english as an official language. Spanish like italian & german of 100 years ago will be gone by 4th generation & when the US close off a borders. Hispanic population will increase but spanish will decreased because English is the dominent langauge in the US & it absorb all other languages.
@dennis771
@dennis771 7 лет назад
2nd easier to learn is not a reason to learn a language, its your opinion that spanish is easier to learn but the main reason why ppl learn a language is because of trades & commerce. So if you think Spanish will be linga franca then Spain & Latin america economy better improve fast.

I'm French and 99% of French people are upset that English is the global language. They all say "We shouldn't limit ourselves to English". Yet, they were happy when educated people use to speak French all over Europe.
@tomflynn8651
@tomflynn8651 6 лет назад
@Eric Decamps French people seem to have an underlying imperialist attitude, left from the times Charlemagne, Champlain and Napoleon. They also seem to resent the Anglo nation culture of the 19th/20th/21st centuries which they regard as lacking high culture. French people seem to fear Anglo globalization and a loss of their own language's importance on the world stage. However, the English language is simply a more useful because it is the language of the industrial revolution, aviation, maritime law, internet, computing, mass media and modern science (which were Anglo inventions). It is also useful because the British Empire had holdings on all continents which included all colors and creeds, adding vocabulary to an already mixed language (therefore easier to adopt).
