It broke my heart when Mitsubishi announced that there won’t be a new Evo and now the Focus RS. Winter is coming for the car industries.

they scrapped the Focus RS for a Mustang SUV hybrid I can’t believe I’m saying that.

Ford didn't put electric motors in a car with a mustang badge, they put a mustang badge on a car with electric motors...

I’ve an 18 Focus RS limited and absolutely love it! What a shame it’s discontinued. Hot hatches are so rare in the US.

When the Mk3 RS first came out I drove a number of miles from one dealership to another at 100mph. The car had trade plates on, still had the cellophane wrap on it and all the new car stickers. I wasn't meant to drive that fast, the car just sat at that speed with no hassle... easily one of the most exciting cars I've ever driven!

The focus rs is my dream car and I felt like crying when Ford announced they not gonna make a new version of it😭

See you in 20 years when they bring back the RS name in a fully electric crossover with front wheel drive and 2 horsepower

Sad day if there are no future RS cars developed..but it was inevitable. I’m old school, and really wouldn’t be interested in an electric RS. Electric just isn’t what an RS is about.. I’ll be holding onto my Mk2 RS

I can't live without hearing the engine and the exhaust. It's what makes sports cars....sports cars. I don't care how fast refrigerators can do 0-60, they do not have tactile mechanical feel that merges the driver with the machine through sounds and feelings.

That's annoying I guess I'll have to settle for the new Golf R when that comes around.

One way around this is sell a focus RS that meets all the regs, once delivered to customer there are engine upgrades etc to get it where it would have been sold from factory. Just like a modular phone.

Im a massive ford RS fan, this started for me way back to the mk1 escort RS, ford RS for years have always been the game changer, and by todays standards nothing has changed, the focus RS is a brilliant car like all the other focus RS's however development is expensive for ford RS when they create a new model, it would be a shame if ford don't continue with the RS models of the future, which are all legandary on and off the race circuit.

Once they start selling lots of EVs the average will come down thus enabling a higher co2 model such as the RS in theory.

You are an amazing presenter Rory, pretty much the reason I subbed to Autotrader after you joined the team. Even during these times, you are making vids with interesting topics.

Loved my 2017 RS, but the interia quality just needed a step-up, i now own a S3, which is on another level, although the S3 would never keep up with the RS in the twisty B roads

I love my RS and I love showing people Rory's Top Gear video. I just can't imagine an RS without a throaty motor and that's increasingly difficult these days

I wanted an RS so bad after someone wrecked my ST, but used ones were listed for msrp of a new one so I just got a used 5.0 lol. Dealerships in the u.s. Over inflated the price of the RS because so many people wanted them, but in doing so they ruined the fact that they were supposed to be more affordable than the mustang gt

I have loved my RS for a little over 3 years now. I was thinking about trading for a MK5 Supra, but I might just keep it now...not sure yet

Sad news indeed. Another reason why I am never getting rid of my hot hatch, a Honda Civic Type R. A high performance vehicle wrapped up in a practical hatch back design coupled with a 6 speed manual makes for some good driving fun. Makes me appreciate Hyundai even more for entering the hot hatch segment in these crazy times with their AMAZING Veloster N. That car is not to be dismissed. Job well done EU. I'm curious, do these standards also apply to China and if so, do they self regulate or will someone else come in to see they are actually meeting the their proclaimed targets?

Ford have got rid of the focus RS because as much as people said they loved it nobody bought it in viable numbers to make it, nobody put their money where their mouth is....they bought Audi’s, AMG ‘s and bmw M.

It's sad to see, I worked for Ford helping design their engines and cars. Talked to Von Gitten Jr to work on the chassis for the Mustang, made it a great drifter. I remember the same was done with Hoonigan; It was a big effort to create an ultimate car. The Ford team hired racing experts, employing new software packages, state of the art stuff just to produce the RS. Coming from engineering design I can tell you it is possible to reach nearly 0 emissions. Working on big Diesel-Electric Locomotive engines pumping out 6000 hp, the team at GE I was working with managed to drop emissions down 95% for Tier V emissions regulations. It dropped the hp to 4400 but the engine is flawless. Doing it this way gave my team a huge advantage over rival companies use of Urea to solve the problem. Here's what we did, Metallurgy is Critical! being able to simulate the heat/shock wave provides countless efficiencies Balancing the cylinders for Zero friction,(as much as possible anyway) Crankshaft, bearings, cylinder sleeves, nano-textures on surfaces. Exhaust Gas Recirculation: by using the filtered cooled down particulates from the exhaust it's possible to further combust byproducts, it also cools down the fuel/oxygen mixture for even more efficiency. Multi-piezo-electric injectors: Similar to Mazda's SkyActive-X which I also worked on,(Mazda is a Ford Subsidiary) Variable Cam Timing( Triple Profile-performance Cam), adjustable runner lengths, etc for controlled Air Pressure Speed & Load parameters. Being able to adjust Fuel/Air mixture is critical. I was working with Von Koenigsegg to develop pneumatic Exhaust/Intake Valves; This makes a Huge difference, Double power and allows the possibility to design cylinder wide valves. Variable Geometry Turbos: Obviously. Very Expensive Catalytic Converters And once you start getting to the Plasma 5000 degree ignition cylinders... well... I haven't worked with Ford in a while, but I can tell you that everyone's cash reserves got drained just getting the bulk of the vehicles to 95g/km of Co2. And everyone is Focused on Electric development... it'll be a while before the Last final developments of the combustion engine are revealed. Buy these cars, that is all I can tell you. They are all examples of an unprecedented push to modernize automotive performance. Trust me, I'm the guy that designed The Ford GT, AMG GT R, The Viper ACR, and started the Focus RS project... you're not going to see cars like these for a long time.

Real shame. There is something special about the Focus RS. I've owned some other quick cars since the Focus RS but there really is something special about them!

They always do the same thing. They need to say it because they don’t want to cannibalize the Focus ST. They always release the RS at the end of the life of the model.

So that means the ones out now will go up in value immensely still a great sad to see it not coming in a new generation

Like your show ,live in Jamaica, Never saw a Ford Focus RS in my country (not this model). The older ones winner on our local Rally competitions.

The only 2 fords I’d consider are the focus RS and mustang. After my fiesta which is a huge let down I’ll probably never own another one. Quality just isn’t there on mine. Sad times

When top gear and fifth gear come together it would look like This segment. Keep it going please. With the new emissions rules there are alot of business who need to revamp their fleets so some ideas based on industry in relation to the best possible choices. Just a thought

for an example, 150g/km co2 from gas engine, then they throw a hybrid in there, which maybe get it to 55g/km, but the batteries they use is releasing so much co2 in the production, so in the end i doesnt matter, they just moved the actual release of co2 to the battery factories instead of the exhaust.

There's just another way, create a subsidiary that will only develop sport cars on low volume

What a stupid regulation. It should be based on the cars sold because that’s how much emissions are actually put out into the atmosphere and the performance cars would make up a negligible percentage of those emissions. It’s shit like this that makes me glad that Brexit happened.

Too bad the motors had issues along with the transmissions. Every one I look at has has one or the other replaced and sometimes both.

Great Video Rory, it is such a damn shame! Every car enthusiast knows what the RS badge means. Not just fast Ford enthusiast's, car, motorsport lovers in general. I never feel the ST badge has the same pull, although I am sure they are damn good cars. Maybe Ford will look to develop a Fiesta RS in collaboration with MSport in the future?? Let's hope so! In saying that Ford have trimmed their motorsports division massively, Toyota with their homologation of the new Yaris GR clearly think high performance hatch backs are still relevant, even with a small production run.Times are changing too fast for my liking, I'm baffled by Ford, this is a huge nail in the coffin for all rally/motorsport and hot hatch fans.

🤔 Will surely miss the RS

Could we start seeing more detuned vehicles sold in collaboration with tuning companies such as Mountune? The Mk4 ST has massive tuning potential with its 2.3L engine. Mountune's first kit for the ST brings it up to a respectable 330ps. An RS Line edition, with the appropriate styling, a tick in the emissions box for ford, but the power brought up to spec through a tuning company? I'm sure a lot of people wouldn't mind sticking an RS badge on themselves.

Ford just wants to die, it seems. So do GM and whatever is still left of Chrysler. Build crappy vehicles that dont appeal and the customers stop buying. Who'd a thunk it? That mutant mustang is ugly as sin.

For me the biggest loss was the M140i last rear wheel drive 3.0 litre NA hot hatch with the B58 engine which pulls like a train and will win any hot hatch including the RS3 & A45 on rolling.

Third option is what Paugeot did with e-208 GT. It will be the future in my opinion.

They’re an English company and their name is strongly affiliated with coming after “Escort” and “Sierra.” You know who I mean :)

I know a guy who drives in the Australian Supercar championship (No names) and before they had the Mustangs he drove a Ford Falcon and they gave him a Ford focus RS to drive around in. Then when they switched to the Mustang, he got a Mustang to drive around in. He said he preferred the Ford Focus RS because it was a lot more fun to drive and a lot more extras than the Mustang. I am a Mustang guy so it hurt deeply just a little bit but it shows you that the Ford Focus RS had a lot going for it. Really is a Cosworth all grown up. This also explains the big push of the F150 Lightning or whatever it's called. If Ford gets a big run on the F150 Lightning and the Mach E, they could continue the Focus RS. Assuming it was selling well enough before hand. Or maybe that is not Fords plans but Focus RS fans plans.

Honestly, I am jealous of the new fiesta ST being only in Europe, that`s a better car than the focus RS IMHO. More mechanical, less computer interference into the driving experience, and lighter weight. Very advanced engine compared to a potentially cracking variant of the Mazda L series block in the RS. Not saying the RS is bad, but if I can, I will go for the new fiesta st.

Ford is going bust,they have to evolve with electric car technology or die, as crazy as it sounds. For me the last Focus Rs is a great car but a chav mobile.

It'll be back. When the time is right. The RS badge shouldn't be thrown onto everything anyway, it should be a more limited sight. If that means not seeing an RS model for another 10 years then fine, the return can be triumphant. Failing that Ford can try it on a Fiesta for once, create a limited 4WD Fiesta with 300 horsepower.

The RS badge is something which emerged and became part of car culture .. I aspired as a car (and Ford man) to have an RS , I have one now a MK 3 and at 66 years old. To make a point I was presenting to class of late teen lads at college and i know they were thinking "daft old bloke". Later when leaving for home the same lads came across the car park and when they saw me and the RS the conversation pitch changed --that badge gave me legendary status. It meant something to them that only a car nut can understand. Its a Ford, its not perfect but it represents what Ford has done so well and to market a legend --the Mustang, The RS badge , the F140...+++++++ way back to the model T

Yes please do a follow up video about the everyday cars that are at risk of the carbon emitions! I have bought a fiesta 2013 1l ecoboost to be exempt of the carbon tax and because of the diesel cars situation, I believed at the time (as I intent to keep this car for a number of years) that I went the right route.. Specially when considering that more cities will have the restrictions on diesel cars around the city centre etc

Ford had a good time period when the RS came out. But 2019, 2020 they just screw up SO bad. Mustang Mach-E, all those ugly small SUV, no more sedans... Idk but if they don´t overthink their strategy i think they will not survive for long. Korean and japanese cars are way to good now that they can kinda cheap out on the cars and innovations....

If they could get that konigssegg (or however it’s spelled) 3 cylinder, if that was below the threshold it would be pretty good

Life Hack: Never buy a used performance car.

Currently the best hatch is the Fizzy ST, I’d make a fizzy RS-T with like 3-350bhp, up rate internals, aero package, etc. Aslong as it’s under 40k why not!

The RS was too expensive for what it was. Hence why so many little bought this vehicle.

I would dig a fiesta RS. Only issue possibly being the weight of an awd system and the four cylinder Ecoboost from the mustang (if they don't tune the 3 banger).
