i remember yoongi once saying that even if he doesn't speak english he knows if you're talking bad about him/them so don't try it (paraphrasing, i don't know the exact quote) so i do think he could understand it, he's just a bit insecure talking it i believe yoongi said he grew up listening to eminem and other american rappers and looked up lyrics since a young age so i think that was his exposure though i will say all of them by now have massively improved
Keep in mind.. The videos in this compilation are old and from back in the days. So yeah they were learning and stuff. But if you hear them now.. They really can speak, and making whole sentences. You must see compilations of their concerts when they have their talk moments with ARMYs. Of course it's not all fluent, but they certainly understand everything and can talk a little bit and still learning.
Your whole hood Suga is going to be hilarious once the new song hits in a few hours. I think he’s just shy and also doesn’t want RMs job if translating. He’s happy to sit quietly in the back and likes knowing what everyone is saying. It’s also easier to understand than to speak another language. I find it so sweet how the guys are working on english because they want to help RM not have to carry everything in English interviews etc. JHope and JK have been especially vocal about this and it’s so sweet.
I feel like once people learn the fact that Joon is the “only” one fluent in English people tend to underestimate the other members’ abilities, but this compilation is pretty old and the difference… yeah all the boys are really good tbh but Yoongi especially is one that tends to shock people since he’s usually pretty quiet. I’m fully convinced translators for him are more so YOU can understand him rather then him not understanding you at this point (same with some of the other members)
This is a personal opinion, Suga comes across as someone who's very well versed in Korean (both orally and grammatically), someone who not only understands the culture really well but really values the language, he also puts a lot of importance and weight in his words and conveying a message (especially as a rapper) which is normally in Korean for him. For someone who is so well versed in a language and has always relied on their language to guide them its not only difficult to learn a new one but its difficult not being good at it immediately. It's hard enough learning a new language, but to be spoken down to (especially when he's not used to that from Koreans), its understandable that he'd be hesitant with being vocal with his English skills no matter how good they are. Im bilingual myself and I rely heavily on both the languages I speak, I cant even begin to express how out of my comfort zone and difficult I found it to speak in French (back when I was learning), even when I felt quite confident in my French I still refrained from using it as much as I possibly could. Its also the whole entitlement that comes from English speakers, I dont know why but for some reason a lot of English speakers view English as the godsend, end all be all (which I get, it being a very widely spoken international language), but there is a sense of a complex that seems to come with some English speakers, especially when they're placed in situations with people who aren't fluent or just don't know it.
I agree with you on that esp. the second point and wish they would wise up (I bite my tongue and refrain from telling them the world does not revolve around you dipwad). A lot of languages are way more elegant than English in the way they express themselves.
Yoongi and Hobi has been able to understand English as a fluent speaker would for a long time!! Hobi has been speaking and typing in English more as of late. As for Yoongi he has said that he can speak it well, but he chooses not to because he isn’t confident in his accent.

Namjoon - Yoongi- Jimin& Hobi are all very fluent- I wish Yoongi& Jimin would help Namjoon out more often bc I’m sure it gets mentally exhausting for him after awhile. I think Jimin& Yoongi fully understand the conversations but are just really shy during interviews.

Also Jin is really good at English, but understanding and want to speak is two different things and Suga low key knows a lot and he rapped in English and Korean, he listens to English at a young age, the only different is Joon lived 6 months or so in New Zealand and he outspoken. They just want Joon to have a the credit because Joon is fluently in English like he is native speaking.

Oh yeah. Yoongi knows how to talk english. He just chooses not to, and is a bit shy about it. He also keeps to korean in most interviews cause he wants his point to be clear and everyone to exactly understand what he says. Nowadays many of them are real good, for example both J-Hope and JK answers questions in interviews. And they´re all eager to learn. In turn, many armys learns korean.🙏🇫🇮 Finnishmama
All of them now are better in English, but I think Suga was and just hid it for a long time. That should take some of the translation burden off RM now, plus will help them in the long run if they want to keep doing stuff in the U.S. or other mostly English speaking countries. I agree with you that the Korean language sounds so beautiful, but I doubt I can learn it at my old age.
Actually speaking is a very different skill and it is more difficult compared to listening, reading and writing at least in my opinion bcoz I have the same trouble. In my country, english is a second language and we learned it since elementary school but I still can't speak it fluently bcoz its harder to form sentences and find the words on the spot.

Suga not only one Jk and Hobi be faking I think they all understand English lol 😂 I been Army since 2015 I’ve seen then act a fool they goofy. I understand a lot of languages because of how I was raised. I watched a lot of foreign tv and movies I can speak and understand almost 8 languages as well as American Sign Language. I’m not fluent in all the languages I speak it just depends on what I’m watching lol I picked up the languages by mistake then when my husband speaks to me he says sometimes I respond in different languages lol 😂
