Why Haters Are Wrong About X-Men 97's Animation...Its Actually Peak 

Don't get me started, haha. I'm nearing the end of the animation program at my university. I'm not a full-fledged animator yet, but I've been in the program for more than long enough to consider myself well-educated on the craft. As an animation student, X-Men '97 is absolutely mind blowing to me. The art-style is so faithfully adapted from the comics, the same way the original series did; but *unlike* the original series, it doesn't sacrifice the quality, fluidity and consistency of the art in each frame to achieve that. The orignal 90's series is a classic that is to be appreciated, but the animation has objectively aged poorly. Or at least, more than other cartoons from it's time, such as Batman: TAS. The art style was too detailed. With their limited animation budget, it lead to the characters moving in stiff, undynamic and blobby ways. It has it's charms, sure, but it's flat-out wrong to try and call that "peak" animation. Working within your means is an important skill as an animator. This is why movies like the DC animated features and shows like Invincible have more simplistic, blocky art styles. It allows for them to maintain an appealing aesthetic without sacrificing the quality of the actual animation. X-Men 97' has some SERIOUS STONES to try and strive for what the original series did despite how difficult it would be; but by God, they pulled it off. I can say without a doubt that as of today, X-Men 97' is *the* most impressive looking comic based animated series I have ever seen. It's aesthetic is everything the orignal series wanted and failed to be, be that due to technological restraints of that time or budgetary limits. (I'd wager that it was both.) A lot of people watching X-Men '97 grew up with the OG cartoon, so it's only natural that they have a nostalgic bias which leads to them rejecting it and insisting that it looks worse since it's different from the style they associate their childhood with. This is also the internet, so they also refuse to acknowledge it as their subjective opinion, and will scrounge around for "critical" arguments to prove that their distain for the new animation is gospel fact despite the fact that... Well, they're completely unqualified to discuss such things. I mean, that's just kind of the problem with the Internet as a whole, though. It provides an outlet for any average schmuck to try and pontificate about certain subjects as if they're experts on the matter when in reality, they know nothing about it. We all do it, though. 😅 I know a lot about animation, but I know nothing about game development. That doesn't stop my dumbass from ranting about "bad game design" on games that I probably just suck at. It's a bad habit that we all need to overcome. X-Men '97 looks fantastic. People just need to tear their nostalgia goggles off and cope with that.

What's wild is those channels trying to go in months before the show premiere and now they're just in their feeling how great it is... just like the Fallout streaming series😂😂

One of the animators on X-Men 97 made a viral youtube animated Dragonball Z short, which was AMAZING. He said himself that he was hired for X-Men 97 because of that video. There are quality animators working on this show, it might not look exactly like the 90s version but you also have to keep in mind that in the 90s it was all hand drawn and also the process of creating an animated show was very different back then so there will be differences. The action sequences are animated much better in 97, but the original 90s version had more character detail but they also had to make sacrifices to be able to have that kind of detail on the show.

I haven't heard ppl complaining about the animation, I heard about ppl complaining about the lack of wolverine and what not. It is what it is. American animation is just as good as any animation.

Most of the channels/youtubers bashing the series before are somewhat silent now, especially after the recent stellar episodes, with only a few left here and there that as you said, never even watched the show and simply want to troll. The animation in X-men 97 is so clean and gorgeous that it puts other shows to shame. I was a little unsure before it premiered because it worried me that it would be too flash animation styles but looking at it when the show came out… it looks so stunning.

Reminds me of when people bitched about legend of Korras animation. It was better than Aangs season and it was made by the same people. People complaining for the fun of it.

You know, if people started developing mutant powers in real life - that would terrify me. I would want mutant powers, just to see what I’d get but the thought of other random people getting the power to control minds or control magnetism is scary. I’m getting old.

I heard haters complain when the trailer came out and after the show officially started nothing. I'm sure there's haters still out there but the vast majority were silenced. Show is easily the best iteration of the property in 30 years.

Honestly, i had no hope for 97... and after seeing the trailer i was like... nah... and then i watched it and have been blown away. I love it so much.

I haven’t seen any of the new X-Man series’ episodes yet. Don’t worry I’ll get right on it soon. I have seen a clip or two but not a full episode yet. Animation is on point for sure.

I didn't like the animation, but it's growing on me. I binged the 90s show b4 since I was like 6 when I was looking at it. I think we use to anime animation because it's so mainstream now that it's common. But it's definitely an upgrade over the 90s show. Especially since 5.

I love this show and actually still have a old 13’ color 90’s TV that I have setup to stream old shows on and this show looks ridiculous good on a old CRT and have actually been dubbing them to VHS as they come out

The Line art and Animation is great and I don't mind that it borrows a lot of Anime Flourish for the Action scenes but even in the scenes with no action it still passes on the dramatic scenes. It comes down to very good art direction and X-men97 is lucky to have it

Its Fire, but from an artistic perspective; it contains pockets of "dead space" . Little moments in some episodes, that feel empty or needs more action. Feels quiet sometimes. Overall 8 out of 10.

The only complaint I've heard was that Jubilee had had more action time than Logan. The animation is beyond great. I do get a 90's cartoon vibe from the show, but a shinier version. The dialogue/voice actors are amazing. The stories are coming at you at mach speed so you don't get a chance to breathe before more craziness happens, but still stellar.

The same people who are hating on X-men 97's animation are the same mf'ers who like anime named "I was reborn in another world with a toilet plunger an a ipad" where the protagonist has a harem of 2000 year old dragons who look like they are 12 at best. Their opinions are trash.

The character animation has moments where it looks 3D, and that’s the only part of the animation I generally dislike. I think it looks pretty great and it’s pretty fluid in fights scenes

i used to be a hater before this show aired and now i fell in love with it. I was completely wrong about this show.

I 100% agree with what you said about them not using enough of those guitar riffs I also think in the opening they shouldn’t have removed the bell sound that was the original at the end of the crescendo. The opening just sounds a lot less detailed.

The show is hit on nostalgia so the art style is going to be like the 90s series not the art style of the one off Japanese intro. The animation is great, the art style might look a little different. The animation is smooth and dynamic the action is great. People take art style and animation as the same thing it's not. I do feel bad for the Japanese audience that saw that intro then got the regular show and wondering what happened. I would have loved to have had season 5 done by that studio.

One thing I don’t get is 3D being this boogeyman in animation. Spider verse one of the best animated films ever, uses a lot of 3D models with 2D assets. Sometimes you need 3D in order to bring characters and scenes to life.

slightly less detail in the artwork compared to the original, but the animation is definitely better and unlike what the critics say it's certainly 2d, not 3d with a filter.

I generally heard nothing about this, yet I’ve heard the opposite when comparing another show. When season 2 of Invincible was fully finished, there were disappointment on the quality mainly to the animation not changed and wanted to look better as they hoped based on the teaser that was made from another studio. In summary, the story they have praised demanded to be reflected to the animation by giving a higher production budget. As for the hate train that goes nowhere, they should have known by now that mutants in Marvel has always been an allegory for a constant battle against prejudice, starting with race and eventually orientations and gender identity. As for the show, the animation is astonishing and worthy follow up. I only catches some pet here and there but never finished fully, yet they are always welcome to bring their best of the old team wanted to make and definitely to enhance the very thing that made the original special. Man I that makes me want to bring back the 90s Spiderman series even more, I was intrigued of the concept art that plays in the end credits when I was kid.

The animation is the least of my concerns.

Maybe it's just the animation nerd in me but it seems like a really simple matter to me. The old show was animated on cels, while the new show is animated digitally (ie on tablets and computers). Simple.

It’s Kevin Feige trying too hard to be “Comic Correct” he’s ruined so many franchises by forcing them to follow the comics path instead of following the story that was already written. He forced out the creator of the original series to feed us the same story the comics drew together. They did some very outlandish storytelling for shock factor and to sell comic books. But in reality it’s hard to see people you loved growing up getting a huge change in character in a 20 minute episode. Like many of Feiges projects it feels, forced and cheap.

I thought some of the facial expressions are not good enough for the emotions the characters are feeling. Storms are great, Jeans not so much

I think people complain for the sake of complaining. The show is good the animation is good. I feel they tried to make the animation like the 90s show but without having to do the long painful way of 90s animations.

Explaining the vhs 📼 transfer process really clarified to me why I remember this show looking better back then. Also when HD TV came out I specifically remembered other older shows looking worse in HD then on a standard tv

Lmao X-Men 97 is much more coherent than the old one that it could have been an entirely new show. There's an actual stake in every episode you can feel the tension. You havent felt it in the OG. Marvel should have made this a new show but people will bitch about it cause it isnt the Xmen 90s.

I can show you tones of hand drown animation that will blow only computer users animation out the water Akira scenes where hand drawn design moves from the '50s where more fluid sleeping beauty was insane Pinocchio even their cartoon animation from the forties blows stuff away tom.and Jerry t2x Avery flushers Superman animated on 1s 24 frames a second but those short were shown in theater before airing on television nothing in those movies or short screams hand drawn technical restraints, what is that? There is no restraint but what is allowed via budget, even to this day.

You keep saying "you guys are gonna say'" to things I'm not gonna say. I own some old animation production cels.... I know they threw that stuff away. lol. But you're dead right. The thought that people are mad about the somewhat simplified designs are really baffling. Go watch the intro to Batman: TAS. The motion moves so fluidly not despite the designs being simple, but BECAUSE of it. They're able to really deliver punchy anticipation, follow-through, exaggeration and squash & stretch because of the simplicity of the animation. Compare that to, say, the animation in projects like Crisis on Infinite Earths, and the difference, if we're being honest, is clear. Great video. You completely nailed it.

Everything does not have to look like anime. Eye roll this is why design is so stale these days, no original personality. 97 looks and feels different which is a good thing.

Ppl will complain but tbh this show is very balanced in art, color, animation and character development. I’m so tired of the X-Men being about one boring character, which was Wolverine, that it was becoming bored and pathetic. This focuses on all characters, Gambit and Rogue shown like never before on live and toon screen, being able to see Storm, Marvel Girl and Magneto using their powers on a level far greater than simply basic and the story giving honest messages only because of the characters being implemented into the story. I mean how much of a story can one character give🤦🏾‍♂️ before it plays out. Jubilee is that same type of character and honestly I’m bored of her already but thankfully there are others cause…I’m not gonna complain. TTTT American Animation will never ever surpass nor be up to par Japanese Anime nor their story telling… if Japan would study and take the X-Men serious…I guarantee their version of X-Men will absolutely eclipse American X-Men. Putting their immense imagination into the Omega Level Mutants would be other worldly and their focus on their characters powers is something Americans can’t do. I always here the excuse that Marvel can’t dwell into Storm’s full potential because her powers are too plentiful that there isn’t enough time or enough room or enough of anything really to have her perform so they just limit it to wind and lightning. The Japanese would certainly have plenty of room and time and I’m not sh**ting on Marvel’s American lacking capabilities…I’m just simply comparing and keeping it 100. This X-Men is close to what I’ve seen the Japanese do with the X-Men when just playing around with their version of the X-Men and I’m talking "Goku" level like X-Men.

Just read the comments on any of World Class Bullshitters' reviews on this show. The guy praises the show yet everyone is calling him a shill just because he enjoys something made by Disney. Like, I'm as "anti-woke" as the next nerd but some of these folks are stubborn as hell. This show is actually great.

I think most people are satisfied with the animation. It’s a very small group of people who have complaints. I don’t even think this was really worth talking about but at the same time I’m kinda glad you did but I just don’t want people to get the idea that most people don’t like the animation because that’s just not true.

Civil War remains the worst written MCU movie and I’m tired of people who don’t see its flaws complaining about “mid to low” tier movies. Civil War. Tony decides everyone else bears equal responsibility for his murder bot, puts Wanda’s tactical error on the same level of the destruction HE wrought with Ultron, and locks her up rather than, I don’t know, GETTING HER THERAPY. Rather than having the others’ backs, Tony decides he has the right and responsibility to force them to obey a (frankly impossible) law that only exists to break up the Avengers and is ignored by Black Panther in the very next movie and Spider-Man in perpetuity. Two “Bucky” camera catches stand out. One- why didn’t Black Widow question why a “ghost” no one ever caught a real glimpse of for 70 years would be caught on camera walking away from a bomb at the U.N.? The motivation for which never even enters the conversation. Why? How? Explain the reasoning here. Nobody bothers to ask. One of the Earth’s greatest assassins and he’s stripping away a disguise on camera? Horseshit. Widow should have been immediately suspicious. It stinks of a setup. Everyone just took it at face value. It makes no goddamn sense on the heels of Winter Soldier. It just doesn’t. They had to make the Avengers STUPID for Zemo’s plan to work. Then there’s the whole Bucky killed the Starks thing. ON CAMERA. Convenient as hell, that. Even Vision’s argument in that meeting with Ross doesn’t make sense, as most of those threats he references exist with or without the Avengers. They coasted on how good Winter Soldier was. Civil War is crap. Not Justice League crap, but crap nonetheless.

People don't know the difference between animation and art style

I was also the many who thought this show was going to flop and later on I didn’t even watch 97 I watched all of 92-96 to understand and I’m so glad I did i understand that this is a MASTERPIECE

It has nothing to do with flash animation. You animation can be just as fluid in flash animation and no one uses flag any more that was a program it doesn't exist any more these animate toon boom clip studio paint and cfi programs nowdays. held frames frames fill space on timing sheet. animation that look jarring are often animated on 3 or 4 this is called limited animation often used on comedy shows, and television action cartons. There also something called re-use when you slip in the same drawing or setup or layout throughout the animation to coupe with scheduling restraint, why do it twice when you can do it once meaning it is not 24 frames a second that's movie quality animation. Even anime use these techniques to maintain budget constraints and rushed schedules, anime is not as fluid as y'all think, they use a lot of tricks to hang out that stuff. Animation that.maybe animated more fluidly are what you call the money shots, because they take longer to do and eat up the budget. Animators often reuse the whole animators sequence and most never know because we don't pay attention when things are in motion and subconsciously it looks formiluar and comfortable because you probably already have seen it several times before, thanks to our pattern recognition. And lastly plug in you must keep you charters on module so plug ins allow you to.do that preprepared character posed and head moldes are.often use so you are not drawing from scratch every time chi really helps elevate composition and and complicated movements but if you are a great animated you not going to tale whether it cgi or hand I promise you because it all about timing and weight distributions.

Imma catch hell but when I first saw it I wondered what's up with the animation, it's feels stiff in certain ways. But I'm also a guy who very much appreciate hand drawn cartoons and anime. But one thing that can't be denied the story telling is really good.

Animation is good but the original was more comic book style. My small complaint was the story telling in the original was amazing and this is like saturday morning cartoon. Still good and glad to have it.

I’m enjoying every minute of X-Men ‘97. No complaining here. The animation is beautiful 🥹 the storytelling is awesome . Tbh people can be so ungrateful & they need to kiss the feet of the creators for bringing this hit show back. This show is my childhood. I can relate to the X-Men🥹🥲

My complaints were: The animation looked a bit clumsy and cheap at the beginning, but I've since come around on it. It's dynamic, smooth, really good. The plot crams in too many storylines at once, but so far they've pulled it off wonderfully. Nothing gets in anything else's way and the character development and dialogue is PEAK. Why does Morph look like a weird chameleon thing when he never looked like that in any previous season, but I kinda stopped caring when he's basically a living cameo for every other mutant ever. He's fun. XD
