If you have any old prescription bottles especially the bigger ones, you can make mini fishing kits with them, just peel off the label. Put some hooks, a small sinker or float, some line around some something, maybe a small piece of cardboard, and maybe a fly or worm in with it if you want. All they need is a pole of some kind and they can fish.

I'm a mechanical draftsman. Manual, not CAD. So is my roommate, professionally. We have a lot of books and plans on 19th century and earlier mechanical systems, plus books on chemistry from that era and earlier. We have a few cases of paper, our drawing boards, and a stock of pencils. I have an old manual typewriter and ribbons and carbons. I'm not a printing press, but I can reproduce small scale. That becomes useful.

At current markets that's not far off in the near future. I've seen people who are willing willing to barter or buy a mag worth of ammo for almost around $30 bucks for 9mm, about the same for 5.56. 9mm JHP is probably a shot.

@DonaldJ Of course life is more than violence and guns. However that still is a reality of the world we live in. I believe we should have a very positive mindset and motivation for our community and our families. Survival/preparedness is not only way of thinking, it is a want to protect, provide and support your family and community. I don't know where you got the kill or be killed attitude about a shot glass and current ammo prices, to make that jump is a pretty big stretch. I pray I never have to use violence to protect the people I love, my self or anyone else. I'm very surprised that you take from my comment or the preparedness community as a whole that "kill or be killed" is even close to the frame of mind most people are in. I'm with you on respecting nature, its resources, and it's power. I've spend many days in very austere conditions in all 4 seasons in the woods. I know you cannot fight mother nature, you must respect it and understand it or you will not make it out alive. Every year many people don't. I do believe that if you outsource your protection that puts you at a risk, just because you don't have mean harm to anyone else doesn't mean that they will not harm you or someone you love. This is become increasingly more true in major cities across the US, and that's not law abiding gun owners. I can tell you I personally know a lot of people who are firearms owners and they NEVER want to use force against another person. You keep a fire extinguisher in your house, and buckle your seatbelt when you drive. Surely not because you want a fire or plan to crash but because you would rather have it and never need it and need it and not have it. For me and most other firearms owners (Men and Women) we enjoy target shooting, it's a fun hobby that takes skill, awareness, motivation, and respect for the tool you're handling. This is as true with a knife as it is with a gun, car, or camp fire. Don't respect it's power and you will get yourself hurt. This goes for power tools to hand tools, along with the countless other things.

Do I wish there wasn't violent people in this world? Absolutely 100%, but it's not reality. I've seen and know of heinous crimes committed against people who did nothing but try to live their lives in peace. In their communities they had something riped away from them, safety and security. Which can make people hate the world but they don't. These are people who still manage to find fulfillment in life and move past the senseless attacks against them. While others have not and struggle daily or even lost their struggle. Someone else did that to them and they had no say in the matter. You have a great day. I don't think so. They people that want those items won't have anything you want in exchange. Trading Ammo or firearms is risky since they can easily be used against you.

That's actually pretty smart. Reminds me of one of the smarter people on the show Doomsday Preppers, who had big spools of yarn that she had for trading purposes.

Agree, Esp in the very long term ...... and well made items can be repurposed esp as children grow. Sock yarn is also in my haul, as well as the needles and hooks. I am a bit saddened that many of the young women who have recently had or are pregnant that I know, are not interested or do not see the sense in learning the skill of knitting and crochet. They don't seem to figure we are heading into the deepest recession ever and these two skills and sewing, will save then an absolute fortune and could even earn them dough / be a skill to barter with, esp if they can do repairs ...... I'm also learning to spin, as most of the yarn that comes into UK comes from either Turkey or China, but here in the UK, we do have plenty of good grazing for sheep, and plenty of sheep. Sheep, = yarn, milk, cheese, meat, lard & tallow, tallow for candle making, very versatile sheep. Zips are another item to stash, not many items of clothing don't have a zip somewhere ...... so are buttons, however buttons are easier to make than zips. Years ago when I was in the Army, I remember driving through war torn Bosnia, and seeing an older lady sat in the sun on top of a bombed out building, with no roof, with a toddler watching her, she was sat with a couple of sacks of fleece and a spinning wheel, spinning. It gets pretty cold in Bosnia like -36deg C, diesel freezes. So warmth is pretty important.

Better to have rolls of cloth and some good sewing supplies. This way you can repair clothes with holes in them. Issue if there is a crisis when bartering becomes the only option, I don't think anyone will have time to knit. Most of the awaken hours will be needed for food production, harvesting wood for heat\cooking, cleaning, repair, etc. You can patch a pair of jeans. jackets, gloves with cotton cloth in a fraction of the time it takes to knit something new. You can also make new items faster with cloth than yarn.

Not good in the first weeks .. but after few months or year or so.. Yea good item.. thing is some barter items will be good immediately some may be better down the line..But still a good item. 👍

I agree. Bartering I think could be very dangerous. Once they know you have extra. Bartering is over, they just come and get it probably with a group of friends.

Generally bartering will take two forms - trading directly with your neighbors because you or your neighbor has a need. Bartering out of need puts you in a disadvantaged position, and thus you only want to do that with people you trust. The fact that they are a neighbor you live near keeps you from ripping them off (and vice versa). The "trust" is a key part of the trade itself, and thus you have far less to worry about when it comes to safety. If they are, say, trading you ammo for food (because your position is strong and while you don't need ammo, it is a good storage of value), and because you know they are hungry you give them more than agreed to in the trade as a neighbor, they are going to be HIGHLY unlikely to target you. They would be far more likely to target outsiders to get things to trade you for more food. The second form will be general barter - as market places will spring up (often around schools, churches, and other places that will accumulate people). This will include those with real needs who are desperate to trade with strangers (and get ripped off) from necessity (and they can be dangerous), criminals (because there is a concentration of value to bring them in), and people trading out of their excess (merchants, of a sort). If you are well prepared, then you would be in that third camp. You have a good hunt and kill 6 deer at once, you have a good crop and have tons of produce to trade, etc - so, you are looking to trade out what you have for durable value, or you have a particular need that you are looking for. In a general barter place, you are at the most risk in the coming and going, so show up very early in the morning. That also lets you take the first look at permanent "stalls" as well as be there for those also looking to be the first at "fresh" goods. Make honest deals quickly, leave by a different route and circle round (to avoid any who might follow you), and avoid the main roads in or out within a close distance of the market (the most likely "ambush points"). This would also be the time to be fully armed and not alone. Likewise, don't carry more than you think you can trade in short order. Know your place in the world. You have a truck load of pumpkins you are driving in? You could spend DAYS trading those off, especially since everyone else has pumpkins coming in at the same time of year (and no one really likes eating pumpkin, which is why we make them into pies). You would be better off trading that load off quickly to an established trader for less and let that person reap the greater profits over time so that you can get in and out and back to your home and farm.

Make sure that they are heirloom or open pollinated, then they will re grow true to the original plant.

Learn wich plants you can eat and are medicinal, way better then grow food in a monoculture (only one of the same species in a small space) so a food forest would be better. But there are a lot of weeds you could eat and are medicinal, so on the side road you could eat and heal!!

Sure, it's practical to make our own necessities, but pulling out a product someone is used to could shift their mood instantly, and earn their favor as a result. See: "The Book of Eli" and the "cat oil" scene.

great idea!!! buy large bottles of cheap stuff and have smaller bottles to fill up and barter with.... that will keep the alcohol fresh until you need to start bartering. I am going to do this.

100 proof vodka. I dont use isopropol anymore...just 100 proof. It even works better for me

Yes I've been getting both alcohol and wine. I make sure it's in glass bottles. I'm not sure how much leaching will occur with plastic. I've started making multiple types of extracts with alcohol. Good for barter and for food fatigue. Vanilla in spiced rum is amazing

I've stocked up on Mora. Coming from a family of knife collectors, the Morakniv is more practical for the price.

My son died suddenly two years ago. Very sad.... But anyway he was a major knife collector. We only had a few hours to be let into his apartment and had to leave so much behind. I hate to think of what was left behind in the knife department...

Yup, but my guess is that you never trade any of that stuff you are stocking up on. This is why barter is pointless.

@@guytech7310 Trade has always existed and barter is it's earliest form. The time inevitably come when someone has something you find you need more than something in your stockpiled supply.

@@guytech7310 Okay. One of us their plans to survive did not work out well. One of use had their victory garden fail or were unable to get game. In short one of use cannot feed themselves and family. That person will trade with someone who has surplus food. The one who came up short will trade what they have for food. Substitute medicine or any other item as being needed.
