Karlo Broussard, author of Meeting the Protestant Challenge, takes on a common challenge to the Catholic priesthood. If Peter says all Christians are priests -- and he does -- then what need have we of a Catholic priest?

Thanks Karlo and Cy! The explanation helped me a lot. I have a sister that's now become non-Catholic and these are few of the things that i have to be aware of and be able to share well to her so she will understand more about our Catholic Faith. And i pray that she will come back to the real church. God bless!

An overseer, then, must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, temperate, prudent, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, 3not addicted to wine or pugnacious, but gentle, peaceable, free from the love of money. 4He must be one who manages his own household well, keeping his children under control with all dignity 5(but if a man does not know how to manage his own household, how will he take care of the church of God?) 1 Timothy 3: 2-5

This would seem like a typical Catechism class We need to have Priests so that they can entirely focus on ministering Keep in mind how Catholic Priest go to Seminary for 5 to 7 years You need to realise in their years of training in the Seminary, Catholic Priests are not only merely Priests but they are Psychologist or Social workers who completely dedicate their lives to ministering to the Christian (Catholic) communities

Those are good reasons to have trained ministers and pastors. They don't relate to the concept of priesthood, however.

Jesus Christ gave His apostles and their direct successors, Catholic Priests, His authority, power and Sacraments (the keys to the kingdom of Heaven). Matthew 16:18 And I say to you, that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hell shall not prevail against it. Matthew 16:19 And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven. And whatever you shall bind on earth shall be bound, even in heaven. And whatever you shall release on earth shall be released, even in heaven.” Mark 3:14 And he acted so that the twelve would be with him, and so that he might send them out to preach. Mark 3:15 And he gave them authority to cure infirmities, and to cast out demons: Matthew 10:7 And going forth, preach, saying: ‘For the kingdom of heaven has drawn near.’ Matthew 10:8 Cure the infirm, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, cast out demons. "The Bible alone"... until Scripture disproves Protestant doctrines, at which point those key passages are conveniently forgotten. Or convenienvtly reinterpreted. For example, the many times Jesus specifically gave authority to consecrate the Eucharist, to give absolution, and other special ways in which the Apostles act in persona Christi. How can Peter override all that? Answer: he does not.

Scripture does disprove Protestant doctrine. Jesus Christ established His One True Apostolic Catholic Church and Doctrine in His Church. The Catholic Church gave The Holy Bible to the world. Over 1500 years later, Protestants rewrote it, deleted verses, chapters, books and changed wording to both The Bible and The Ten Commandments. He wants everyone to be His Church and remain in His Doctrine. ALL 44,000 other Christian Churches broke away from Gods Church and Doctrine to start their own Church, like the pharisees did & God rebuked them for it. They do not have the valid Sacraments Jesus instituted. Ephesians 4:4 One body and one Spirit: to this you have been called by the one hope of your calling: 4:5 one Lord, ONE FAITH, one baptism, 4:6 one God and Father of all, who is over all, and through all, and in us all. John 10:16 And I have other sheep that are not of this fold, and I must lead them. They shall hear my voice, and there shall be ONE SHEEPFOLD and ONE SHEPHERD. John 17:20 But I am not praying for them only, but also for those who through their word shall believe in me. 17:21 So may they all be one. Just as you, Father, are in me, and I am in you, so also may they be one in us: so that the world may believe that you have sent me. 17:22 And the glory that you have given to me, I have given to them, so that they may be one, just as we also are one. 17:23 I am in them, and you are in me. So may they be perfected as one. And may the world know that you have sent me and that you have loved them, just as you have also loved me. 17:24 Father, I will that where I am, those whom you have given to me may also be with me, so that they may see my glory which you have given to me. For you loved me before the founding of the world. 2 John 1:9 Everyone who withdraws and does not remain in the doctrine of Christ, DOES NOT HAVE GOD. Whoever remains in the doctrine, such a one as this has both the Father and the Son. Hebrews 13:9 Do not be led away by changing or strange doctrines. Revelation 22:18 For I call as witnesses all listeners of the words of the prophecy of this book. If anyone will have added to these, God will add upon him the afflictions written in this book. 22:19 And if anyone will have taken away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his portion from the Book of Life, and from the Holy City, and from these things which have been written in this book.

As the late great Catholic biblical scholar Raymond E. Brown stated, the ancient Israelites were all considered priests in a "holy nation, set apart", but this in no way forbade a ministerial priesthood - one which lasted until the fall of Jerusalem in CE 70. The two notions support each other, and do not cancel each other out. Anti-clerical Protestantism refuses to understand this.

I am part of the Protestant movement and I don’t see how the office of the ministerial Priesthood can be Apostolic for the following reasons: 1. such a priesthood is never mentioned in scripture, only that all believers in Christ are priest’s because we are “living sacrifices”, we “offer up sacrifices of praise to God”, and we participate in the “ministry of reconciliation” when we share the gospel as the Apostle Paul did. 2. Scripture only gives us two offices in the church. Elder (aka Presbyter-btw Presbyter does not mean priest, it means Elder) and Deacon. Bishop is also mentioned but is used synonymously with Elder/Presbyter by the Apostle Paul. In the second century a distinction was made between Bishop and Elder/Presbyter and by the middle of the third century, Elder/Presbyter was replaced with Priest. St. Cyprian and St. Jerome are the first to write about the priesthood around 250 A.D. 3. The unique functions of a Catholic ministerial priest in the New Covenant , auricular confession and transforming the Eucharist into the actual body of Christ and repeatedly re-offering it as an un bloody sacrifice is unnecessary. In the Lords Prayer Jesus taught us to confess our sins to the Father. It is now possible to go directly to the Father because Jesus is our Mediator whom we pray through. This newfound access to the Father was symbolized when the curtain to the temple separating the Holy of Holies from the rest of the temple was torn in two during the earth quake that coincided with Jesus’ death. Hebrews 4:16 says “So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.” And 1John 1:9 “But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.” The sacrifice of Jesus was made once and offered up once to the Father on Calvary. “Unlike the other high priests, he does not need to offer sacrifices day after day, first for his own sins, and then for the sins of the people. He sacrificed for their sins once for all when he offered himself.” Hebrews 7:27 It goes on to say after offering himself up, Jesus sat down at the right hand of God the Father because his work was finished. When Jesus gave up his spirit on the cross he said “tetelestai”, which is an accounting term meaning “paid in full”. So there is no need to re-offer the sacrifice of Jesus again and again and again. We must be careful to not read the present day dogmas back into the scriptures, but let the scriptures say what they say. These are the reasons I believe the Ministerial Priesthood of the Catholic Church is not Apostolic.

@robertdelisle7309 I don't think anyone is saying we "need" a ministerial priesthood - Christ is not limited to the Sacraments- but it does seem to be the natural order our Lord established in fulfillment of the Levitical priesthood. St. John indicated that He granted his Apostles special authority to forgive sins and bind/ loose. In other words, stand in the place of Christ as annointed priests. It's no far stretch to say they appointed elders who had the authority to lead their congregation in Communion, which early Christians have always believed was indeed the Real Precense of Christ, and center of the worship service

I just happened upon your video while asking Google this very question. I appreciate your content. I do have a question. I do believe in a high priestly order, but does the Bible not say in Hebrews 3:1 that Jesus is our high priest? And then, in Matthew 27:51, it says that the veil in the temple was torn into from top to bottom, making the Holy of Holies accessible to all through the prefect, once and for all sacrifice made by the lamb of God, Jesus. Peter saying that we are all priests and the aforementioned concerning Jesus as our high priest changes the idea that we need a human hiarchial priest. Referencing Jude 1:11 as evidence for hiarchial priests is difficult to accept. Yes, Jude is speaking on Korah rebelling against Moses and Aaron and their priesthood but at the time of the rebellion, God had established Misses and Aaron as priests over the Israelite nation. At the time, the forgiveness of sin was performed once a year by the priest who would sacrifice an animal for the people. Jesus had not come and gave himself as our atoneing sacrifice. Is not saying that we still need humans as high priests for priests themselves, usurps the very authority of Jesus as our high priest? What did Jesus accomplish on the cross then if we still need men to stand in the gap for us? Romans 8:34 says that Jesus intercedes for us. 1 John 2:1 says that Jesus is our advocate. By reading just one verse prior to Exodus 19:6 you see that God is telling Moses to tell the people that if they will obey Him that He will make them a priestly people. We know through reading the rest of the Old Testament that the Israelite Nation failed miserably at obeying God. If they had completely obeyed Good and become that priestly people, there would have been no need for Jesus to come and die in a cross as a sacrifice. By Him being our sacrifice, God's grace covers us and we then become that priestly people who can bodily approach the throne of God ourselves, without a human advocate.

We are all priests insofar as we believers are empowered to go directly to God with our own personal sacrifices. This is due to our union with the the Body of Christ, Jesus Himself being the Head. You are skipping over Hebrews the book of Hebrews specifically chapter 7 and 8 clearly does away with the priesthood by succession exceptional priesthood is done away in Christ and replaced by perpetual priesthood of Jesus after the order of Melchizedek, and he makes us all priests under his perpetual priesthood. There is no more successlonal Priesthood, in the real Church. @justfromcatholic Год назад
When God established Levitical priesthood, He declared it to be perpetual (Exodus 40:15). Numbers 18:19 applies “covenant of salt” to this priesthood, which means it will last forever as salt is used to preserve food. Covenant of salt appears twice in OT and the second one is applied to kingship of David and his descendants through Solomon in 2 Chronicles 13:5, which is based on God’s promise to David (2 Samuel 7:12-13) - God will establish his throne through Solomon forever. The perpetuity of both Davidic kingship and Levitical priesthood were later reaffirmed by prophet Jeremiah in dual prophecy in Jer. 33:17-18. The first was fulfilled in Christ (Luke 1:32-33) and the second one is fulfilled in Levitical priests of the New Covenant who are the Catholic priests. Another prophecy in Isaiah 66:21 says that God will take as priests and levites from all the nations, or they no longer have to be Jewish. Levitical priests of Judaism cannot fulfill Jer. 33:18 - without their Jerusalem Temple they are no longer able to offer any sacrifice and/or all types of offerings as prescribed in OT (Lev. 1 to 7). Christ Himself put an end to Old Testament sacrifice and offerings according to Heb. 10:9-10 by His own Sacrifice on the cross, once for all. Yet Heb. 10:13 says “we have an altar” - the word “altar” is related to sacrifice and sacrifice on altar requires priests. You need neither altar nor priests for sacrifice of praise (Heb. 13:15) and offering our own bodies (Rom. 12:1). The word “we” in Heb.13:10 refers to Christians, not to Jews who then still had altar in their Jerusalem Temple (assuming Hebrews was written before destruction of Jerusalem Temple).

Covenant of salat and "we are the salt of the earth" are NOT the same. You don't need to be a genius to see that. Exod. 40:15 clearly says God will perpetuate levitical priesthood and yet you believe it was removed. How dare you say that God cannot keep what He declared? Heb. 13:10 does NOT mention about metaphorical altar of the heart - the entire Scripture NEVER mentions such altar. It is your wild imagination to deny what Scripture says! The verse simply says "altar", NOT "altar in heart"

I like the expression Scott Hahn used. To a Protestant or outsider of the Catholic faith (myself included at one point) see an acorn, and then see an oak tree. And wonder how is that possible that this acorn became an oak tree? Well you have to understand the process of organic growth. And you won’t understand unless you seek to understand it. And you need history to understand it. But most just want to focus on “that doesnt look like it’s how interpreted the Bible therefore it’s wrong.” Myself included at one point. Rather we should take the stance of “this is contradictory to my belief, but because I love God, let me understand how Catholics came to actually believe and formulate these doctrines.” You’ll be pleasantly surprised when you look at it from that approach.

@@Jo3K1ng3 We have damnation, then after Christ we have salvation. It's not a matter of how we got from A to B but a simple matter of Christ. The Golden Rule, imparted by Jesus, serves as a foundational axiom for a simple and ethical moral code. However, the Bible, primarily composed of epistles and narratives, lacks a systematic theological framework. When theological deductions are derived from analogical and interpreted accretions, they risk complicating the apologetic's landscape. While such deductions can generalize biblical motifs and deepen theological understanding, they should be approached cautiously to prevent obscuring the fundamental simplicity of Jesus' teachings and introducing unnecessary doctrinal complexity.

@@adam7402 “do this in remembrance of me” as Jesus did at the last supper and did he take the bread and say “eat this for this is a symbol of my body” or did he say “this is my body, eat of it “ John 6:53 (NIV): “Jesus said to them, ‘Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you.’” Look at how Levite priests worshipped and look at how Catholic masses function, then look at how angels conduct a mass in heaven in revelations. Revelation 8:3-4 (NIV): “Another angel, who had a golden censer, came and stood at the altar. He was given much incense to offer, with the prayers of all God’s people, on the golden altar in front of the throne. The smoke of the incense, together with the prayers of God’s people, went up before God from the angel’s hand.” It’s the same thing. Jesus could have written a theological manual and founded a seminary school campus before He died. He didn't because that wasn't essential. He created a ministry by teaching in person to selected individuals and by providing an example on a world stage. Anyone who calls themselves a Christian has to believe that Jesus accomplished all which was necessary and would probably have not done much if anything as an adult which was not fulfilling some prophesy or doing something which the Father deemed necessary. If the Bible is necessary, and for the first century Christians the Bible didn't exist yet, that would seem to be a rather large oversight by a being who doesn't have oversights. Therefore, what Jesus did was more essential than writing the Bible, or something like it, Himself. What was that? What had to be done besides fulfilling prophesies about Himself? He reformed and taught a new Priesthood who would obey His teachings. That priesthood was responsible for teaching and spreading Jesus' teachings until the printing press got invented at least. There is no Christianity without the work of the Catholic Church for the first 15-16 centuries. That can't be disputed from any credible argument. If protestants want to argue that the Church polluted the faith, well, the faith was wholly supported by the work of the Catholic Church. That really includes the Orthodox church as well, but RCC and Orthodoxy are more similar than they are different which is more than I can say about many protestant denominations.

It's common sense that in the first century A.D. there would have been ministerial priests because that was the norm all throughout the old testament up until Jesus came into being. The Holy Father's promise of the coming of Jesus as the last Royal Priest is all over the Old Testament. Jesus, the apostles and Pentecost happened for a reason; to fulfill the Holy Father's promise of a priestly king and His plan of redemption for all nations. Jesus is the only way back to Eden here on Earth and the only way to Heaven and Eternal Life because He IS the last royal priest who did what no other priest had done or ever will - give His life on the cross to redeem us back to our Holy Father and be exalted in Heaven to sit at our Holy Father's right hand. Ministerial priesthood makes no sense to throw it into the biblical story unless we're talking pre-Jesus.

This do for the commemoration of me. 11:25 In like manner also the chalice, after he had supped, saying: This chalice is the new testament in my blood. This do ye, as often as you shall drink, for the commemoration of me. 11:26 For as often as you shall eat this bread and drink the chalice, you shall shew the death of the Lord, until he come. 11:27 Therefore, whosoever shall eat this bread, or drink the chalice of the Lord unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and of the blood of the Lord. 11:28 But let a man prove himself: and so let him eat of that bread and drink of the chalice. 11:29 For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily eateth and drinketh judgment to himself, not discerning the body of the Lord.

You are twisting everything biblical; you're saying things that are not there - you're assuming that that's what's being said or done but it's common sense that's not what's being said or done. The taking of the bread and wine is a remembrance as Jesus said. A remembrance that He is that Royal Priest prophesied in the Old Testament who came to save humanity and that one day He will return. As Jesus said, nobody comes to the Father but by Him. We don't need a ministerial priest to access the Father. We have been adopted as sons of the Father already through our coming to Jesus and anointed with the Holy Spirit of God - the same spirit with which Old Testament priests were anointed with. Our bodies are the temple and the church of God. The presence of God is within us. We have access to God - no need for ministerial priests to sacrifice for us for the forgiving of our sins or for prayers for petitions if we already have access to God.

The Catholic church system is based on a wrong interpretation of scripture. They are not and never will be the church which Christ is building Himself. Peter is not the rock. The disciples nor so called priests have authority to forgive sins. The apostles could declare that someone's sins were forgiven when they received the gospel message of forgiveness. It was God who did the forgiving, not the apostles and most certainly not a priest, especially when they are just vile sinners themselves. The Holy Spirit is the power and authority in the true Christian church. There is no need for Popes, priests, cardinals and the like, in fact it is an insult to God.

I assume that God speaks very plainly. Jesus said that Simon was now Petros, just as God had previously named Abram as Abraham, Sarai as Sarah, Jacob as Israel, etc. They are titles as much as names. Much as the names of God are titles or descriptors more than actual use names. So if Jesus can be believed at all, then Simon became Petros or rock. To dispute that is to dispute the word of The Word made flesh.
