What is the meaning behind Christ’s words from the cross, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me” (Matt. 27:46)? Today, R.C. Sproul soberly examines Jesus’ cry of dereliction.

In order for the debt to of our sins to be paid, Jesus had to suffer the full wrath of God. I would suspect that when Jesus, the night before, was sweating blood, it was over the prospect of being forsaken which would be more punishing than the betrayal, injustice, mockery and physical torture combined.

In a devotional, Spurgeon wrote along the lines: such was the willingness of Christ to shed His blood for His people that before being pierced through by men, He was shedding it in Gethsemane.

I disagree. I think satan returned to him as promised and reminded him of a the sins of the Elect, or Remnant from the dawn of human history. No 1 will know in this life tho.

@@ItalicusHammer Agreed that we may not know in this life, but I'm curious to know where in scripture does Satan promises to return to Jesus. BTW, since my initial post here on this video, I came across another interesting take on the "why have you forsaken me" passage. Think about this... If I said, "Sticks and Stones" and stopped there, what instantly comes to anyone's mind are the following verses. Some believe this was Jesus affirming his deity to all who were witnessing his death. When he said "why are you forsaking me", the following verses of Psalm 22 would have instantly come to many there, especially the Pharisees. This explanation seems to me to be very plausible, since we know that scripture teaches scripture.

He was sweating blood because He would be taking the sins of not only the whole world but every single person back to Adam and Eve.

Reference to Psalm 22, which is prophecy., so is Psalm 2, he's coming back to bring judgment Psalm 22: 1 My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, from the words of my groaning? Psalm 22: 6 But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by mankind and despised by the people. 7 All who see me mock me; they make mouths at me; they wag their heads; 8 “He trusts in the Lord; let him deliver him ;let him rescue him, for he delights in him!” Psalm 22: 16 For dogs encompass me; a company of evildoers encircles me; they have pierced my hands and feet- 17 I can count all my bones-they stare and gloat over me; 18 they divide my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots. All fulfilled at the cross. Psalm 2:8: Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage, and the ends of the earth your possession. 9 You shall break them with a rod of iron and dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel.” 10 Now therefore, O kings, be wise; be warned, O rulers of the earth. 11 Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling. 12 Kiss the Son,lest he be angry, and you perish in the way, for his wrath is quickly kindled. Blessed are all who take refuge in him. He came first as the Lamb, He comes again as the Lion.

The separation Jesus experienced makes sense when you consider this: None of us can follow the law without breaking it. Therefore, we were cursed by the law. We were separated from God because of this curse. Jesus willingly took the curse upon Himself and paid the price of the curse, which is death and separation from God. So, as He took our punishment upon Himself, He had to endure the worst suffering, which is separation from God.

I have not yet had anyone explain those words that Christ spoke to my satisfaction? For one thing Christ would not have to ask “why” have you forsaken me? Christ should have, would have had a complete understanding of what was going to happen by virtue of who he was and what the end of his ministry was to be from the beginning.

When I think about it, like that, I think how... Wrong it is, and how it utterly contradicts the revelation of the Triune God... Thanks for sharing, but this understanding of the forsaking of the Son by the Father is... At best, a blessed inconsistency, as R.C. loved to say. So that's my thoughts on it. My question would be, how can we as Trinitarians not contradict ourselves when talking about the Matthew passage?

Although they're not direct parallels to the Trinity, three things can be one, such as mind/body/soul or water/steam/ice. No doubt the Trinity is difficult to wrap one's head around as it is akin to trying to understand God before the creation of the universe and time. How can we fathom existence outside of the space/time continuum, which science falsely claims in which nothing can exist. BTW, that scientific claim is necessary in order for atheistic science to discount the existence of God.

@@Given119 You're welcome, Shane. I think the underlying point I tried to make is that although we were made in the image of God, as we are still in this world we do not have the capability of fully understanding the mind of God. The day will come, when we're in the perfect presence of God, that we'll know all these things. For now, the main objective is knowing, believing and spreading the Gospel.

Why Have You Forsaken Me? Because Jesus Christ was the sacrifice of Cain. 1. The sacrificial animal had to clean and unblemished. Jesus Christ was whipped before his death, thus blemishing him. 2. The people presenting the sacrifice were supposed to be repented and/or humble and grateful. The Romans who killed Jesus Christ didn't care about the God of the Jews, and the Jews who wanted Jesus dead were angry and thought Jesus to be a blasphemer who deserved to die. 3. The Levite priests were supposed to perform the sacrifice, but before that, they to go through a purification ritual themselves. The Romans who killed Jesus were unclean and unfaithful to the God of the Jews. This is irrefutable evidence that the God of the Jews rejected Jesus Christ as a sacrifice. Jesus was unclean and blemished, and so were the people who killed him. This made Jesus Christ the sacrifice of Cain, which God previously rejected.

WE NEED TO BE SANCTIFIED FIRST BEFORE RECEIVING THE HOLY SPIRIT. Why did Jesus say, "Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? (My God, My God, why hast thou forsaken me?)", just before dying? 34 "And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? which is, being interpreted, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?" MARK 15:34 The Holy Spirit had to have left Jesus' body, for at that time it was filled with all the sins of the world and unclean. He (God the Holy Spirit) re-entered Jesus, when He was resurrected, without blemish and cleansed of all our sins. 1 "And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots: 2 And the spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord;" ISAIAH 11:1-2 2 "And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world." 1 JOHN 2:2 24 "Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed." 1PETER 2:24

There's a reason I don't listen to men like this and their 'knowledge' about the scriptures. While it all sounds impressive, it's all based upon human wisdom and reasoning and theological knowledge, not true biblical truth. Jesus wasn't forsaken by God, neither did God turn His back on Jesus. God doesn't forsake a righteous man, that's biblical truth. Jesus said these words, that were very familiar to the Jews to point to the work God was doing. Read the whole psalms and it's very clear what Jesus meant and what the purpose of his words on the cross were. God didn't abandon Jesus, but Jesus was showing why he was on the cross and what truly was happening. How through the cross salvation would come to the entire world. God never forsakes a righteous man and if anyone was righteous, Jesus was. Neither does God abandon us, not even when we sin. He doesn't turn His back on us, because we are the righteousness of God in Christ. That's the truth that should be proclaimed, not these confusing teachings that don't reflect the goodness of God.

@@dalelinebarger8439 read the psalm Jesus quotes and you know what he actually meant with what he said. There's a huge difference between feeling Good has forsaken you and God actually forsaking you. God didn't forsake Jesus, that's man made doctrine, God never forsakes a righteous man, that's biblical doctrine.
