Dude, I've had this thing for like 15 years now, there's a fair chance it was my first or second of about 70 transformers in my current collection, and I never knew that. I didn't even know the axe made a trailer hitch! This is nuts.
This. THIS Optimus Prime was my very first… full-blown TF figure that I got back in Kindergarten, and I _STILL_ have him to this very day. Pieces and all. If my dad hadn’t gotten me and my brother one each for Christmas, we may not have fallen into the franchise, as a whole…
Same with me. My first ever Bayverse Optimus Prime (or 2nd Optimus Prime toy ever) was Ultimate Optimus Prime. He's inferior, but still has a good bond with my childhood.
Fun fact, I tried painting the treads black when I was a kid. With water paint. Yeah. Needless to say I was very confused when the paint just literally started vanishing into thin air after I did one brush over the treads and moved the brush away only to see that 98% of the paint was just gone, reduced to atoms.
The peg for the trailer hitch is actually supposed to be his axe thruster. I adore how they gave you the option to fold it up for vehicle mode and flip it out in robot mode. God I miss these toys
Kopaka's Sheild works because he can use it to get blades or Rahi claws stuck in the holes, like a net. Then slice n' dice, or slice n' ice while his opponents are caught too busy trying to get themselves unstuck. It also protects against slashes, while any stabbings that can hit past the holes have to be pretty accurate. If anything does get between the holes, all he has to do is turn his hand slightly, and the shield will twist the weapon out of your hand. And it's small and light enough for quicker movements, instead of a bulky sheild that will be heavier. For blasts or projectiles, uhhhhh. there's always the Kanohi Hau.
I actually thought exactly the same thing when the show originally came out. When they first announced that this Optimus Prime was going to be a young rookie Autobot, I was really unhappy. But then, after I saw a few episodes, I suddenly realized that this version of the character was basically Orion Pax, just with Optimus Prime's name. After I had that epiphany, I grew to love "Animated" Optimus Prime. And like you said, his Cybertron mode toy just has a huge Orion Pax vibe.
I found a used one at a comic store that had the legs jammed in. I guess the previous owner forgot to twist the legs before putting them in. I had to unscrew the legs to pull them out. The joints are also kind of loose.
He probably does feel heavier in truck mode because he's more compact and he's fused with the accessories you don't always have connected in robot mode
To hazard a guess for the shoulder ball joints, I'm 99% sure he's made of ABS plastic, which is kinda heat sensitive, so if he got left in too hot of an area, that can leave a flattened spot on the ball, giving it a loose spot. Easily fixed with a little floor polish or even clear nail polish which is my go to.
The inconsistent tightness in the shoulder joints was a common issue from that time, unfortunately. Many of the transformers I had as a kid (inc. the earth mode version of this one) had similar problems with their joints. Over time the plastic distorts just enough to make the ball or socket no longer perfectly spherical and so you end up with a joint that's tight enough in some angles but too loose at others.
Only ever got this one, and the Voyager. Completely forgot a deluxe variation of this guy even existed until looking it up. Also noticed mine has black treads in the back which I must have expertly sharpied back in the day and completely forgot about. Also no spring loaded gimick which already made it a bit better than the Voyager class. Some of the best Primes IMO have been deluxe those subjectively being Animated, WFC, and Prime. If you want a really miserable one to review track down the Universe one that came packaged with Deluxe tank Megatron from I think 2006. Somehow other than the gun accessory it manages to fail on every way imaginable.
I owned the Supreme Class Optimus from this toyline as a kid, and with this Optimus now being my favorite of the bunch (in terms of character, foc has my favorite design) the new Legacy one has a lot to live up to in my eyes. As long as they don't majorly screw it up, I'll still buy it. I'm sure you unicron trilogy and prime fans will understand the feeling of waiting for new versions of characters you love.
Despite the flaws, this figure does a very intelligent thing: _IT DOESN'T USE CLEAR PLASTIC FOR MAJOR JOINTS!!_ *(glaring at Animated Swindle)* Hasbro may have had a reputation for doing that during Animated's toyline, but how many Animated figures REALLY had clear plastic for major joints?? 🤔🤔🤔 Meanwhile, I prefer the Earth Mode Optimus. Something 'bout the Cybertronian Mode just seems off to me.
i have 3 of these. no joke. he's awesome. none of them had the spring-loaded punching thing (EDIT I FIGURED IT OUT the earth mode retool of this guy has the gimmick !)though so that might just be another figure?
Honestly you only really need his shield Bc it makes up the roof of his vehicle. But Man I really wish they would do more of these cybertronian designs Bc they look great!
Thank you so much for this video. Its rare to find one about this toy. This Optimus I had him since I think kindergarten or 1st grade. I loved him. It was so much fun. I loved the show. I also had the small Bulkhead and Starscream toy. Man. Great times. I dont know if I still have these toys. Id have to search. Maybe if youre interestet it would be cool to see the as for mentioned small Bulkhead and Starscream Animated toys next. Just a thought. But I would be very happy. Still as it is thank you so much for this video. This is already more than enough for me and brings me back to my childhood.
Yo if he really doesn't like under the knee and elbow swivels don't show the 2012 TMNT toy line he will die No joke most of the figures have under the knee and elbow swivels
your probably aren't gonna read this but as a fellow Canadian i found a needlnose, armada hotshot, the junkion guy from legacy eveloution and all tyhe core classes in a GameStop at Kanata so you could probably go there to find some stuff (i also found breakdown there)
at least his shield actually looks like a shield! It's a good shape and size. It isn't just blatantly part of a vehicle that the designers were too lazy to do anything with. They thought through how to make a good shield for him.
I had this toy growing up. He’s missing all of his accessories now but he’s nice. Mine is also uncomfortably floppy but eh old toy that I didn’t take good care of as a kid
Bro so much nostalgia with this prime, I only picked this one up to go with the two pack with megaton that I had when I was younger but this one always lasted longer to me. He a really good figure
I still have my original animated prime and megatron that came in a double pack with a dvd of episode 1, Prime’s arms used to flail all over the place on their ball joints but the legs were always solid :-)
I actually found one, while acquiring F.O.C. Grimlock parts and weapons. Got them and Optimus, and though he is incomplete, $5, and a completely different take on an Optimus Prime figure…
However, @ThatToyGuy, yeah, you were right. So, I finally found someone selling just the axe and shield. It does complete his robot & vehicle more. Thanks!
I remember buying this in 1st grade (I got my first Transformers toy, 2007 Stockade, in kindergarden). I didn't really enjoy it, however, and eventually gave it away, especially after I got Ultimate Optimus Prime, which took his place as my favorite Optimus Prime toy. Now I'm in college and I've got many Optimus Primes, though all of them are Bayverse ones.
I guess the TFA Deluxe Lockdown toy had a similar issue with the wrists as seen in one of JobbytheHong's TFA toy reviews, and unlike Prime, there is a way to fix it.
I had Animated Megatron, Bumblebee, Optimus Prime (Not this one, the spinny one!), Prowl and Grimlock? I think from memory... I loved Animated when I was younger! I owned all seasons on DVD, I had the DS game, owned a fair few of the toys and had a colouring book... Good times!
