I think everybody's gotta love Active Recall. Just sitting down for around 15mins and typing up everything you know for a topic can really help you understand your weaknesses. Sick video btw
pomodoro is not really about rewarding but about letting the brain rest for 5 minutes for each 25 minutes of study, rewarding could be part of this break, but not necessarily. :)
I've honestly used the feynman technique myself all my life without knowing. I think out loud and I try to speak out my thoughts when possible. Speaking what you're learning is a huge boost to how much you can understand and recall.
Wish I knew about you guys when I was in college! Our son who went to medical school figured out great techniques and graduated at the top of his class.
Intentional Marriages hey wow you must be so proud of him, what kind of doctor did he decide to become?? Being top of classes gives you so many opportunities!
Intentional Marriages oh that’s amazing! Sounds like he is internal medicine like me! Hope he is able to stay safe during these times, is he being pulled to work in the critical care units at all?
Intentional Marriages omg, it’s a noble cause especially since he is so close to the action. We are in Los Angeles. We are praying for him and his coresidents to stay safe while saving lives. Hopefully he isn’t going to and from the hospital living with a lot of family members !
i have a question, if you know there’s a reward waiting for you, doesn’t that make you less focused? as I have ADHD, i tend to space out often, thinking about all sorts of things, and if I set up a reward, i would be thinking all about it… what do you think I should do? (im not fluent in english sorry if this doesn’t make sense!)
I think you could still try it. Maybe choose a reward that’s good but not great, so you don’t get too excited about it and then use self-talk to get you back on track. So to take this soccer example, whenever your mind goes “oh, the ball and then I’ll…” catch yourself there and state out loud or in your head “not yet, later, now first study”. You’ll be much better at putting it in words you can relate to. Try not to get upset, be kind and just remind yourself to continue. If you’ll stick with it you’ll find yourself being able to work concentrated for much longer. You can do it!
The Pomodoro technique is more about giving yourself a five-minute break as opposed to giving yourself a reward. I have been playing clash royale on my phone recently, but I also have just gone on Reddit for a bit of a bit. For me, it's not really a reward, but just something completely different from studying that allows my brain to take a break.
As someone who also has ADHD, I feel the same thing. Thinking about the reward while doing something makes me even more eager to just drop everything to do the reward cuz nothings stopping me lol like, there ain't no urgent consequences at that moment right? What works for me is actually the Pomodoro technique, but greatly altered. Firstly, I try my best to plan and map out what I'm going to study. And then, I break them down into smaller steps, smaller sections. Kind of like a game, like this is level 1, level 2, etc. I don't set a timer on each because I found that timers never work on me at all. After each "level", I set myself up for a reward, but the reward isn't something like oh imma watch an episode of this or that or read a chapter or something. Most of the rewards are something like getting up and washing the dishes, or making lunch, or going out and playing with a pet. Now this one I do set a timer for, like for about 10 to 20 minutes. And then, after the break, I go back and try to succeed with the next level of my study goal. So basically it's not really a reward, it's just a break to reset ourselves from whatever we were doing, but making sure that there was some sort of closure to that task before committing to our break. Another thing I do is if I'm being really distracted, like I always keep thinking about stuff I want to be doing, I take a piece of paper and wrote all those down. When I think of a thought, I write it down immediately and then try my best to go back to studying.
my best way to study is to get familiar enough with a topic to teach it, and teach it right away as soon as i'm familiar enough with the material, even if it's to an imaginary person. much better if it's a real person who asks questions though
how long should have to repeat book closing process? until i completely learn it or if i can't answer it should i skip it and deal with it through spaced repetition. some times i re read the difficult sentences. as you quoted in this video. i can't make it out the sentence, if i read it once. some times i understand the topic but i miss the specific terminology to define my sentence. for example: i know how to estimate a soil nitrogen when i am in the lab. but i can't remember the chemical names unless i see the bottle name. i purely depend on recognition. off-course i remember in the long run, but it takes time. some times i feel active recall it's a effective memorization technique. rather than a learning tool. any way thanks for the answers on my previous comments.
I usually close the book and rephrase until I understand the big picture. You can use active recall during the learning process by using a blank paper and also mapping out the big picture and seeing how all the big concepts relate to each other (mind map). Then after you have the big picture, use flashcards and problems to learn the details using active recall and spaced repetition to help memorize
1.Teaching out to unknown person 2.use pomodoro technique and give reward after each session 3.study schedule - detailed that what exactly what you want to study like specific topics Start it right now 👍👍
Transformation & Porn Recovery Coach -Bill Ranshaw hey Bill thank you so much for watching and commenting! Have you been studying for anything important coming up?
Transformation & Porn Recovery Coach -Bill Ranshaw oh wow, didn’t realize there was a test for it, but makes sense since it’s such a rising pain in society. Just wondering what kind of subcategories do you have to learn ?
@@KoiAcademy It is a subcategory of its own and Porn/Sex Addiction is not listed as a DSM-5 Addiction so no further accreditation is needed. I also have my life experience of overcoming porn abuse and sex addiction! I love that you guys as film producers as well! I will be going through your channel! Last Sept, I co-irected and co-produced a documentary film! I've put my filmmaking on hiatus for now.
Transformation & Porn Recovery Coach -Bill Ranshaw oh nice sounds like you are perfect for the job haha. Yea we are just picking it up and we love it. Have you thought about maybe incorporating some film tricks into your videos? It’s hard to do with educational content and it’s also hard to do if you are trying to put out content on a consistent basis. But we just love shooting and editing
These techniques really hepled me to save more time thank you 😊 but one thing my pomodoro timer is 50/10 I am using it for months , after warching this video I switched it to 25/5 but it was too short session I am not used to it what do you guys think? 50/10 or 25/5 which one is better?
So glad it was helpful! 50/10 is the goal, for people who haven’t tried pomodoro I would say start at 25/5 and slowly add increments until you reach 50/10 and even beyond
I have been binge-watching your videos for a few days now. I'm taking up MLS and currently in my third year. My subjects are more on clinicals now and I find myself studying one chapter for one whole day 😭 it's so exhausting. Thank you for such great tips! I'll really apply them and develop new study habits. Your channel is a lifesaver 💖
This type of mindset is a must for everyone! You can apply it in a lot of areas too besides studying. Thank you for sharing Mike and Matty! Learning new things everyday!
Hello! RU-vid recommended your channel and i have been binge watching your vids now. I'm a Pharmacy freshie and my classes will start next month. You guys are really explaining things well and briefly that it's easy to understand even if it's your first time watching/hearing the concept. I'll definitely come back for a feedback after I tried out these techniques. Thank you so much for your teachings!! I'll surely do these. I look up to you, Doc. Much love from Philippines xo
hey thank you so much for taking the time to write this thoughtful message. It's these day to day interactions and stories that inspire to keep creating more videos. We are excited for you to be starting your pharmacy journey, it won't be easy, but it will be rewarding! Good luck and keep in touch!
I love all the tips in this video! I found you guys recently and I think you are great! I have dealt with burnout a lot and have tried a lot of study strategies, but in the end of the day it is all about trying and figuring out what suits you. I, for one, can't work for 25 minutes only, because I get distracted by the breaks. I mean, by the times I am in the zone completely I already need to take a break. I found out that the best for me is studying for an hour and a half and taking a half an hour break. Because I am able to fully focus on and complete a task for an hour and a half and then have some time to "reward" myself by doing something I enjoy like watching anime or playing a quick game. This cycle I repeat three times or four with a longer break in-between. So I am able to prevent burnout and keep myself motivated and efficient 😄 But if you are just starting on improving your focus and studying 25 minutes could work wonders. Just try stuff out ☺️
i use the Pomodoro technique but in an indirect way. I just take a break when I'm tired than get back to it. also anki :) probably the most important tool especially if youre in med school
Hey Carolette, thank you so much for watching and taking the time to comment! Yes if many people haven't developed good study habits, then we are here to help! Are you currently studying for an important test coming up?
Mike and Matty yes, I’ve studied for the Engineering Exam. Passed Part 1. Now I’ll be gearing up for the P.E. portion later this year. Thanks for asking!
@@MadameInsightTrades oh wow you are on your way, thanks for sharing. Do you mind us asking what are some of the best study strategies you've used specifically for engineering?
When teaching back I feel like how I teach it will be how I actually remember it from there on out. Like word for word that is how it will forever be in my brain. I might refine it but by the end that’s how it is.
I make a plan, i want to study this for an x amount of hours, but i hate english and chem, i like writing essays, i hate analysing books, i sort of like learning and performing chem (in some chapters) i hate doing homework for it. I just need to get a good grade for chem in the ib even tho it has nothing to do with my uni major and my teacher just overloads us with work, mf finished 80% of an 20 month course in 11 months and a good 30-40% of that 80% i don’t understand well
I am not a student! I am a teacher, I have shared your channel to my teen kids and students. Your videos are so amazing! I always encourage them to teach back but you did explain how to do so very well! Thank you very much again for your sharing!
@@hungdinh2352 wow thank you so much professor Dinh! We are going to publish a brand new series on how to apply science to study smarter, will be coming out next month so hopefully it will offer more study tips. Appreciate your feedback!
@@KoiAcademy Oh okay. How can I access it? 👀🙂 Great videos by the way! I found you guys yesterday and I've already watched something like a dozen videos. I downloaded Forest and set a few study hours in tomorrow's calendar to get started in my university preparation. Plus I will try to use some of the techniques you described, such as the teach-back method. Either way, keep on going! 😎
Dennis Netchitailo heyy so glad you found us and welcome to the channel! Great to hear that you set some study time tomorrow.. (we’ll be uploading a study with me video lol) the discord can he found at bit.ly/RemnoteDiscord its not a study discord anymore though, it’s for note-taking discussions using the RemNote app. Happy studying!
