It's from poor technique lol. Digging in with the pick instead of letting it glide across the strings.

Remember you have magnetic pickups and ePTFE once heated (which is part of the wrapping and shrinking/sealing process) becomes statically charged. Which then gets into your pickups and the cavity (magnetized small shredding of microplastics)!

Coated strings are terrible. What people don't realize is they were originally made to be fitted by manufacturers so that guitar stores wouldn't have the cost of replacing strings on display stock. The manufacturer then realized that people who don't play their guitar very often and people who just buy guitars to have them sit around looking pretty will like that they can replace strings less frequently. They were never originally designed to be for professional use. Brad is correct - The coating causes so many issues. They are best fitted for display purposes only.

Actually none of this is true (in the description). Coating durability depends also on how aggressively you pick, but even if you are aggressive it lasts long enough. If the coating is gone - the string is already gone. If you're changing strings every 2-3 years the problem is not in the strings. 😉

Elixir strings are coated GHS Boomers, some of the lowest quality strings on the market but you pay anywhere from $14.95 - $17.95 per set. I worked for the manufacturer for 17 years!

Wow, I’ve never heard that. Very informative! I’ve heard the coating isn’t great. I play D’addario XT/XS strings. They never get hairy this way, and I’m not gentle when I pick, lol. Their coatings are a dream (same coating but applied two ways - applied before wrapping to make the feel of XT naked, and XS is applied after wrapping to make them feel a little slick), plus you get a high quality string under the coating. I’ve never broken any of their strings even once - not even a high e.

@TheGuitologist
@TheGuitologist Месяц назад
Click the "related video" icon on the screen there and it'll take you to a video where I demonstrate one of the issues. Intonation is absolutely another issue that arises because the mass of the string changes along its length the more material rubs off. I've had guitars where intonation was impossible, but then a change of strings and voila! Intonation restored like magic. It was the coating.

So many here saying “change the strings when this starts happening” Well… I shouldn’t have to change my premium strings after two weeks of playing in my bedroom. I bought three packs a few years ago to try out, and was very disappointed. They start growing their fuzz, and I hear/feel the diminished sustain and attack. What strings are you using these days, Brad?

Wait until you look into your pickup cavity and inside of the pickups! Admittedly, they're perfect for people too lazy to change their strings or that may want to store their guitar for a long period of time but the fact is the coating does NOT stop string stretch so realistically if you're about the tone, these don't last any longer, they're only cleaner.
