Welcome to the club Jack, I have had my 106 Rallye for 21 years now! That is a non standard manifold, the standard one also has a heat shield above it, keep an eye on water temps, as after market manifolds can overheat the rad. Water temp should be bang on middle of the dial. ECU cover is missing, can be still bought for £25ish, good luck finding a battery cover though! Have no idea what is going on with you gearstick, but needs investigating. Tyres are slightly over sized, OE fit was 175/60/14, not the 185’s u have on. PAS was an option on the S2 Rallye, mine has it. I agree with your assessment of the Bilstein B8’s I also found them slightly too firm, the OE spec Bilstein B4’s are a little firmer than the factory dampers but soft enough to still retain the character of the car. Different engine mounts also significantly change the character of the car, I returned my to standard mounts in the end and love it. Lastly, thumps up on Matt at Pug1off, he does an awesome job on Pugs, including mine! Enjoy the car, you will!
I was lucky enough to own one of these from new. I ran it for about 45k miles and loved every minute of it. The only mod I did was to fit a Momo steering wheel. Such a pure driving experience - special and fun at any speed. I'm looking forward to seeing how you get on with yours!
Aah 106 was one of my favourite cars. Along with the 205 and Elise. This channel is turning into a back catalogue of my old cars, outside the the German stuff. And that broken red thing you own.
I also owned a new first edition Rally and I loved it to bits, literally. I was speeding like a lunatic around a long bend and as I unwisely came off the throttle it snapped 180 on me in a fraction of a second and slammed backwards into a rock wall, it did a 360 backward, lengthwise flip and and landed on its wheels back on the road. As I came to I realised my torso was sticking out of the rear hatch and my hair was on fire as the fuel filler cap had shot off in the impact and ignited the fuel. The forces were so strong that my body exiting the cabin warped both front seats and my head smashed through the rear windscreen, I slid out of the rear hatch and the first thing I could see was my phone in the middle of the road, as I went to pick it up another car ran straight over it.
I had overtaken quite a few cars before leaving the road backwards, as they crept past the scene of my accident I suspect most of them were delighted at my misfortune, boy-racer idiot that I was.
Lovely wee car. I would point anyone interested in a hot hatch bargain (which these aren't anymore) at a first generation Suzuki Swift Sport. 125bhp and awesome handling- used to have tons of fun getting mine to oversteer through tight bends.
You've kind of hit the nail on the head - specifically that most of the "improvements" that everyone says you need to put on a car, usually make it worse. By this I mean: short-shift kits, lower, stiffer springs and shocks, wider wheels and tires. Stuff like that just makes the car less comfortable, the controls heavier and adds effort and notchiness to shifting.
Best car of the fleet so far 😃 Once the extraneous and weighty plastic buttons and trims fall off they are reliable and great fun, and yeah mine went in the boot seams. With Dellorto twins they made a great noise and a bit more fizz. The interior spec apart from front seats and coverings is one from the base diesel
Every time you hear Jack talking about a certain car you could feel the sheer enjoyment and emotions he puts in to it. He is pretty much like a child in front of a Ferris wheel! We need more people like him in the auto world! Cheers Jack!
Love your car choices. A friend recently bought an N reg 106, carb, 3 stud wheels and only 23k for £600. Head gasket needed doing so did it at my house, it's going strong and he loves it.
These were hugely popular here in Greece, street furniture, most were modded to high heaven, the basics were scoop type air intake, manifold, remove the catalyst, free flow exhaust + chip. Most were wrapped around trees… today on the rare occasion you’ll see one, they’re completely standard specs. Titbit, the Greek versions were all air conditioned
I had a 106 gti in the same colour scheme 20 years ago, brilliant little car which gave me some of the best fun and memories I have. Engine mounts were a weak point, I had to change mine after only 1 year ownership. I put the same little suede sparco snap off steering wheel K & n steel quick shift kit and gear knob and air intake, red stuff brake pads, sports ecu which made it a mad lumpy at idle, and the previous owner had fitted a stainless sports exhaust.... Brilliant fun!
Excellent choice Jack. My 12 yo son and I bought a 205 Si (Aussie market model) and converted it into a 205 Rallye as we never got them here in Australia. It has been a blast, I ended up buying a 306 Rallye for my 18yo daughter as well! I think the Rallye has the TU engine not the XU engine which the 205 Rallye also had but with Webers. Those roads look familiar too, from Harry's garage, I bet he would jump out of some of his cars to get a spin in your Rallye! Cheers Steve in Sydney
There's a tweek on these with the front strut mounting holes in the strut tops. Being constructed such that if rotated 90deg.they produce a higher degree of neg.camber. Epic cars with a cult following.
I used to have its sister, the Ax GT, same engine but was 1.4 and that only weighed 740kg but had some luxuries such as electric windows, amazed that was so much lighter than the 106. The Citroën was built like its weight but wow it did shift off the line
I drove a 1.5D 106 as a company car in london for 2 years and although that had power steering it felt like it didnt. My 106 was always getting broken in to, both doors had the key barrels pried out leaving a lovely hole in the door. The engine mount on mine sheered off the chassis. It never liked to start and it snapped clutch cables regularly. But now i own a partner and the 1.5hdi has been the most reliable engine ive ever done 100000 miles on. I do miss the size of my 106 i could park it anywhere
Small French cars how can you not love them! ..... Actually I love big French cars too but yeah the 106 rallye is a great car! . Years ago I worked at a Citroen dealership in Newcastle and one of the mechanics had a 106 rallye and I had a Ax GT we used to race each other all the time..... Happy memories!
Merci! I love French cars because we don't have them in the US. So now I can live my French car dreams through you. Great color, perfect size, love the interior...have fun.
Great little car, very happy you've gone for one of these, had one back in the day, think I bought mine in 99, had it for 2 years and spent fortune modifying the engine, handling and brakes, got it to how I wanted then sold it on! You'll love it.
I owned a red series 1. Loved it. So much fun. Someone had butchered it and fitted some horrendous fox alloys and de-badged it etc. First thing I did was buy it a fresh set of Michellin steels and original decals direct from Peugeot. Real drivers experience. I would have one again over so much... no actually all of the bloated modern machinery we see today. Enjoy.
nice choice Jack , i had a standard 106 and even that humble little no. felt great around tight country lanes ... can only imagine what a full blown T16 must feel like ! Enjoy what you do keep it up bruv .
That’s a proper DIY car no power steering etc. and a proper size for its class, look how big they have got now.I was following a new Clio and thought it was a Megan ! Great colour also, well done 👍
Good one Jack! Bit biased on French hatchbacks but look forward to Pepe 2 haha….. love your channel! Keep up the good work…. Just about to watch this now…..
That’s very very cool. This era Peugeot has aged really well to my eyes, especially the GTI / Rallye versions. A friend has a boggo 106 when he passed his test many moons ago abs even back then they were tiny; four sixth formers was a squeeze.
You passed me on Sunday evening in Chipping Norton in the Influenzo, me in the red Brera going in the opposite direction .lovely summers evening to be out enjoying the English countryside in an Italian car. The 308 was looking and sounding great!
Congratulations on your purchase Jack! These were all the rage when I was a lad but, given how "enthusiastically" I used to drive back then, it's probably been for the better that I didn't get one...
Amazingly, the phase 1s were available as company cars at the National Rivers Authority in the early 90's... sadly I left before taking them up on the offer..... It would have been much more fun that the diesel Astra estate I had at the time...
That road between Charlbury and Burford is a gem! Really enjoyed it in my Citroen GS which because it was soft doesn’t get bumped of line the way a stiffer, sportier car would… Great stuff!
Brilliant! This is going to make for some great future content, what super car. I'd imagine it's incredibly rewarding to drive and not silly money either. Looking forward to seeing more.
The phase 2 106 was available with power steering. It was an electric possibly electro hydraulic system. This was due to not having enough room in the engine bay for a conventional power steering pump.
I bought a 106 S1 new M reg in red. Absolutely loved it. On twisty roads it would give much more powerful and expensive (BMWs) a run for their money. Used to drive to Milton Keynes in it and would leave the roundabouts using understeer alone. I was sad to see it go but we went down to one car and the other car was more practical. Had a similar experience recently when we again went down to one car and the I30 Fastback N had to go.
Great choice. The S1 was used in a one make race series in NZ in the 90s. They were called the Clubsport but were actually a Rallye (complete with decals). Peugeot NZ gave them a chip, some minor suspension upgrades and 2 sets of wheels and tyres a bolt in roll cage and race seats. You also got the original interior to turn it back into a road car. Quite a few successful NZ racing drivers cut their teeth in this series and there are still a few being campaigned today. We have one of these cars in the shed and it's a favourite to take out for a good strop in the countryside.
Very nice little car, an older car can be but doesn't have to be fast, it's definitely how they make you feel, character is everything. Legroom wise I've same issue with my 146.
A mate of mine had a red one back in the late 90s. I scared him silly in it. Not fast but you could carry so much speed through the bends. Great little chassis..👍👍👍👍
Great choice! :) I have fixed up a 106 Ph1 rallye and a ph2 on my channel. And I got to say that the ph1 is the most fun car, but the ph2 is sooo much better as a daily driver... The ph1 is screaming at speeds.... which is fun... for awhile.. ;)
Welcome to the 106 club. Be sure you will enjoy every single mile in it. I bet the first thing you ll change after the bisteins is the low geared manual steering rack for a hydraulic. If you find a s2 rallye specific one
Jack an easy way to reduce the boom is to buy stick on soundproofing and put it under the carpets and behind the trim panels next to the back seat. It is cheap and easy as the soundproofing is in rectangular panels and can be cut with scissors, because it is under the carpet and behind trim it just need to cover rather than being neet. It should be very easy to take apart the interior, soundproofing transformed my old Citroen AX.
Love yore lil pug 🤗 thare great lil cars 👌 i tell you what is a great lil french hot hach years ago i had a wiliams 3 clio 1.816v motor in a tiny lil car 😍 epic
Lovely little motor, but you need to paint your nuts Jack, wheel nuts that is 😂👍 I shared a Garage with you at Oulton Park RS Day a few years back, when you lost your rear tail light on your 964, we were a Midnight Blue Boxster S and an Orange Cayman R 👍
Love it! Quite excited to see this and hear how you get on! I have a 205 XS which is probably of a similar ethos. Never owned a 106 but I was only in my teens when they were new and quite fancied the idea of an XSi or Rallye. I remember reading positive things about them in Evo magazine back in the day. :-)
My first car was a 106 look 2. Not as quick or light as this, but very chuckable as a car. And actually had some nice things for the era, remote central locking, power steering, cd player, airbags. Which believe it or not were luxury in a car of that era I guess
I had one, Indigo blue. Wonderful car, always regret selling. They're deceptively fast, amazingly so for only 103bhp. Back end gets mobile with little provocation too. Have fun with it Jack, I look forward to seeing the next installment.
Excellent choice Jack, nice interesting car. We've only owned 3 French cars in our time, a 1987 Peugeot 309 GTI, a 1988 Citroën AX GT & a 2011 Citroën DS3. I'd definitely have the 309 back for a few months fun.
As if you got a other pug, miss your 205gti got photo of my boy stood by it outside pug1off when I was getting my 106 quicksilver gti engine loom sorted, love the 106 in blue 💙 had to do the vts conversation on mine easy & better power! Also did the rear disk beam... 👍
