I may have made the best decision of my life, or an expensive mistake because I just bought the 14 inch M1 Max MacBook Pro with 64GB of unified memory, a 32 core GPU, and 4TB of storage because I think this could end up being my ultimate Mac and it could last me years if Apple's claims about their chip performance were true in CPU & GPU performance we could be looking at an industry change that will shake up the entire laptop and pc industry.

Apple referred to them as Mac notebooks (rather than MacBooks) several times in their presentation. I thought that was interesting from a branding perspective, and wonder if that tells us something about the future.

I actually think Apple nailed the branding on these new laptops. It’s the iPhone branding they overcomplicated - Just “Max” instead of “Pro Max” is ample and simple.

The regular M1’s are for the average consumer. The M1 Pro laptops are that expensive because they actually are for Pros this time around. Also gotta mention that for the performance it gives, it’s still one of the cheaper options for laptops in its class.

Exactly. I’ve had friends already complaining about the price and I’m just sitting here confused af thinking “why the hell do you need an M1Pro or M1Max to write a fkn law essay” 😂 Some people don’t seem to recognise the PRO in the name of these devices and don’t understand the power they have at all

@@PTR2K traditionally the Pro’s didn’t offer such a large boost in capabilities. It was just a Quad-core and a graphics card with a 15in screen. So it’s easy to think you still need the Pro but now it has 10 cores and a lot more that’s unnecessary.

Thanks for your videos Greg. Much appreciated. I too went for the 14 inch MacBook Pro Max. Thought it would be a good compromise. I am coming from a 2012 MacBook Pro 15 inch and have now given that one to my daughter. Still going strong and she is using it as her old MacBook Air finally gave it up. I like to get as close to top of the performance as I can as I feel that it just extends the life o the product longer. Again, 14 inch , Promax 24 core and 32 Gig plus the 1 TB hard drive. 14” because at home it’ll be plugged-in to multiple monitors anyways and it’s more manager to carry/handle, max specs available on both as well. Only concern is the smaller case might effect sustained performance. To your battery concern, remember you get fast charging. A small nick pick, the HDM and USC C port should have been swapped in placement. It just bugs me the C port isn’t at the top with the other ports all groups away from the corner. Screen notch doesn’t bother me at all but then again it never bothered me on the phones either.

In the past, I’ve been disappointed by having to settle for lesser performance just because I wanted a smaller screen.

Not a mistake in my opinion. I think it's the perfect form factor for portability. The M1 Max SoC will give you the 4 external displays, so it'll be a good workstation as well. I may have made a mistake myself, I went with a similar M1 Max with 64GB, but went with smaller storage, figuring I'll be using external TB 3 or 4 nvme SSD RAID for storage of video projects.

Now, I currently have a 2015 13" MBP, and thinking about buying one of these 14" BEAST. I really don't need this new MBP level of performance, but I keep my machines for a while, and like to future proof to some extent. So which should I get, the base M1Pro or the base M1 Max? I just got a extra laptop from work so I could wait for M2 generation next year, or used models from second hand market if nothing else. I preordered the 16 inch M1 Max with 32GB and 2TB drive. I thought about going 64GB, but it was $400 more, and I didn't feel it was justified for me. I edit photography mainly, but also do color grading and editing on video, but since the M1's are so much more performant in RAM, having 32GB on the M1 Max systems are really like having 64GB on Intel systems, based on my testing on my Mac mini M1. I'm tempted to preorder the 14 inch MacBook Pro instead, but in testing out my wife's 13 inch MacBook Pro, I don't feel like the screen real estate is good for me. I know the laptop is heavier and bigger on the 16, but when I was on the road this summer for a few weeks, despite the size and weight, when I actually worked on it, it was really nice. I didn't quite feel the same when I've worked on the road with a 13 inch. I enjoyed the weight and size savings, but not so much the screen real estate. I like blowing up my photos for precise editing, and Adobe apps don't always scale well on the smaller screens. So yeah...I think I'm sticking with 16 inch, I guess. 🤔
@In3rt_ia
@In3rt_ia 2 года назад
I am also deciding whether to go for the 16 or 14. But I feel like the small form factor, weight, portability are really attractive to me with the same performance as the 16. And I could always have a external monitor which could be powered with the laptop. I think I might have to go with that and still an inch bigger than 13 which makes alot of difference. But having no proper game support is kind of big for me because I do a little bit of gaming sometimes.

Thank you for your time making the video. I didn't at all mind the few tangents due to no script. Thought I'd toss in a few extra tidbits. 1) I so wish Apple had released the (anticipated) new Mac Mini equipped with the M1 Max chip at the same time as these new MacBook Pro's! If they had done so, I would have bought 2 machines, an M1 Air, probably 2 TB and the Mac Mini maxed out, pardon the pun. Most of my serious business computing and video editing happens at the desktop and the laptop is more for mobility. 2) Given that I need a computer NOW and I can't afford to wait another 6 months+ for the new Mac Mini, I will probably end up getting some iteration of the 14" Pro... spending more on a laptop than I need. 2) I agree that the display size & battery life aren't sufficient advantages, compared to the major DISADVANTAGE of size & weight for mobile applications. If I really care about image size, it's almost always in a desktop scenario and it's easy enough to connect the laptop to a much bigger display... or even better... multiple bigger displays. 3) The one advantage that the 16" appears to have and that I had missed and most reviewers have also missed; was pointed out by Max Tech, that being that although there is NO weight difference between the M1 Pro & M1 Max versions of the 14" Pro (both weigh 3.5 pounds), there IS a weight difference, albeit small, between the M1 Pro and M1 Max versions of the 16" Mac Pro. It's only .1 pounds, or less than 2 ounces (4.7 pounds vs 4.8 pounds), but it seems probable that the difference is due to better heat dissipation for the M1 Max, whether that be better fans or better heat sinks. Could be a very small impact and might only show up for extended duration torture tests, but presumably Apple did it for a reason. Again, whatever that difference is, I just can't see the performance difference happening with enough frequency to constantly be hassled by the extra size and weight of the 16". Lastly, as a bonus, am I the only one that spotted Apple's spin doctoring on their efforts to shoot down "right to repair"? That's not what THEY called it of course. They used the phrase, "Hardware-verfied secure boot" under the umbrella of security and protection. It happens at about 25:22 into their Event video. Here's a link to that time: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-exM1uajp--A.html Hope that was interesting extra commentary.

I definitely miss the " thinness illusion " design for the sides of the chassis. This rounded pan design is dated and reminds me of the many nightmares I went through with the 2006 17" MBP. The previous gens look like they hovered above my desk because of the design language of appearing to be things around the sides, by creating a noticeable shadow around the device, super cool. As for the notch, I hope I will be able to expand all of my content around the notch. I don't mind the notch being there but I want that whole upper area to be filled with my content. Otherwise it's not a good use of the actual screen real estate and that makes me furious. I will get the top of the line when it appears in the refurbished store on Apple's site because I will never justify buying anything new from Apple just to have the latest gadgets. No. That's unsustainable and is fast track to debt. Yuck.
