I'm an old sniper who served in Korea and that is the weapon I used with an art 2 scope. Very accurate and reliable rifle.
@EDINTHEWIND
@EDINTHEWIND 4 года назад
Voice of truth I didn’t serve in the Korean War! I served in Korea at Camp Greaves from 86-91. My sniper rifle was an M-14 with an Art2 scope. I was north of the river 1/2 mile from the southern boundary zone. The camp is no longer there because the American sector was transferred to the ROK soldiers just after I left. I qualified at 1000 yards with a 30/40. My old commander works in DC, would you like his name and number? Stolen valor is a big deal and an even bigger deal to call me out. I know there is a lot of bs on the internet, but I ain’t it brother.
@EDINTHEWIND

Keith Schick I loved Korea. I did three tours from Greaves and one from Hovey. Besides basic and AIT all my time was in Korea and Riley. I wish I would’ve stayed in like my spotter did. He ended up with thirty. The civilian money was too much of a pull for me. I would do it all over again if I could. Wish I could get some of the recent stuff as well. All that training and never tested in battle. Well we all do our part at our time. All the best.
@EDINTHEWIND
@EDINTHEWIND 4 года назад
Keith Schick yes it is Toka-Ri. Thank you as well. I loved every bit of my service. I did a lot less than some but more than some as well. It was such a pleasure and privilege to have served our nation, and the people of Korea. I am still addicted to Asian women and food to this day. It really shaped me and my future, and I am thankful for it. All the best my brother.

Enjoyed the video and you make very good and valid points. I have owned a Springfield Standard M1A with walnut stock for many years now. While I do not shoot it as much as some of my other weapons, AR15 Carbine, AR15 Pistol, AK 47, several hunting rifles and an array of handguns, it still is one of my favorites. I enjoy just taking it out now and then for a quick clean and basically just to handle and look at it. It only makes it to the range about 4 times a year but I love every minute of range time with it. I have only made two changes to the weapon. The Clinton ban caused Springfield to stop selling the rifle with a bayonet lug. I blame Clinton for half of that and Springfield for half because even though they do not make the rifle with the lug on it, you can buy a hider with lug from Springfield! Kind of gouging the customer that already put up quite a few bucks for the rifle! So I was a sucker and paid the extra bucks to put the thing back to looking more military issue. Of course than meant I had to buy a surplus bayonet and although authentic and in really good surplus shape, It cost less than the new hider with lug from Springfield. Also, the original M14 did not have any plastic or polymer on it. So again, I purchased an upper hand guard of Walnut from Springfield. That was not all that important accept for trying to get that original look as Springfield quickly went to the newer upper because of wood swelling problems in the jungles of SE Asia. That is not a problem for me because the rifle is always in climate control accept when at the range and even though I live in the sub tropic area of the USA, that is only a problem a few months out of the year and I only run between a hundred and hundred and fifty rounds though it at the range and then back to protected air. However, as you state, this beast is a weapon you can count on to go bang when you pull the trigger. I have not loaded any ammo in it that it would not eat, fire, spit out and refeed and that includes steel cased! I have a Ruger SR762 (AR10) and a PSA AR10 that refuses to run even one 20 round magazine of Hornady Steel Match but, the M1A goes through it like water through a sieve! So yes, she is one of my favorite weapons. A beautiful specimen of a US Battle riffle that shoots accurately, without fail, and just damn good to look at. Of course the big thing is, really fun to shoot. When I take this along with other more modern rifles to the range and others see what I have, it is the M1A that everybody wants to look hat hold and shoot!

I love the M14. It's simple, accurate, proven, and rugged. I've owned many modern rifles in my time, both domestic and foreign, but if I had to choose just one it would be the M1A/M14. You can bet your life on it. But for in-home defense a 12 gauge pump Remington 870 or Mossburg 500 is great, prefer the 870 though. Just remember anything is better than nothing. If all you have is an old break-top 38S&W revolver or an old .22 pocket pistol, my advice is to get good with it. Shot placement is key and that means practice with it. But if it isn't reliable please get something that is. You wouldn't want a fire extinguisher that only worked most of the time, right? A home defense gun is safety equipment.

I'd love me an M1A, but it really doesn't make sense for serious use in 2018. I don't want to pay a bunch of money only to have to have work done just to make it shoot decent groups. Especially when I can grab an AR off the shelf and do 2MOA with plinking ammo. I live in an urban area, so I'm not trying to blast 7.62 Nato through 3 houses trying to shoot a home invader. Can it be used for home defense or as a DMR? Sure, but should it when there are better options? Nope.

I feel bad when I see guys buying these for practical rifles, when they could have gotten a more accurate AR308 for so much less and have an easier time doing everything; mounting optics and light, shooting groups, finding magazines and spare parts. Mine stock with an optic does better than 2 moa and is a std rifle. Go watch nutn fancy’s M1A vid. As far as a standard DI .308 AR, some are better than others but I know for a fact the military has had reliability issues with the SR25 in the field. Lots of anecdotal testimony on that. I’ll take a piston over DI. Especially for a .308. Mine works great all the time.

Welcome Home Brother!!! U.S.M.C. 1965 to 1969 - 0311 qualified with the M-14 as a Rifle Expert in 1965 on the 200.300 500 yard line. Carried the M-14 the whole duration I was in and the whole time I was in Viet Nam, never failed me once the whole time I was there. It had sand in it, mud, water and never failed to eject or feed. I had a BAR Belt (had suspenders on it) that I carried, it had 6 pouches and two mags fit in each pouch, so in all I carried 13 mags total. You don't want to be in the bush and run out of ammo in the middle of a firefight. Came home with two purple hearts and the loss of a lot of Brothers. Would love to replace the one I carried in the Corps. but they are out of my reach being as costly as they are. Take Care Brother! Semper Fi!!!

It's funny that you brought that up. I live in GA and my son lives in AK. Last summer he came to visit and we went down to my "range". (I live on 18 acres in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains). I own an M1A and it has a scope mounted on it. At 200 yds. he used the scope and I used the iron sights and out shot him. He was shooting from a bench rest, I was shooting in the prone position. He also seemed quite amazed at my performance (I was kinda shocked too). Then I dug out my range book that I kept from my boot camp days back in 71 and he understood how I was capable of doing that. BTW, he was 46 and I was 70. With my scope mounted Winchester Model 70 Featherweight (30-06), we were equal at 100 and 200 yds.

Here is the other view *(the negatives)* of the M14. I nailed a whitetail with mine last weekend. JRA M14. I like it, lots of experience with this platform. Very simple rifle to use and maintain, strong and very durable, reliable, accurate, powerful and excellent ergonomics. Let the haters of the M14 hate, if you have one, live with it and shoot it, and learn about it, train with it. I don't think you'll be sorry for it.

Alot of the ones I've seen that hate the M1A/M14 usually don't know much about it short of "It had a short *official* service life" and that its "hard to get it to shoot accurately" LOL Supposedly. Then magically somewhere that means the entire rifle platform sucks or whatever. I agree with GeorgiaBoy1961. They can hate them all they want. They aren't going anywhere. I plan to own a few more. Personally i dont see what the big deal with the safety is. To me it makes sense, when you point a gun a something/someone you atent is to shoot. To shoot your finger is in the triggerwell. When your finger is in or going in you can normally feel if its on safe or fire unlike a ar type safety asum you have a proper grip on it. Plus i have seen dozens and dozens of time ar safetys get bumped to fire on road marches and never heard a m1a do it.

It has the safety that is actioned the same way except it does not go outside the trigger guard it just moves further away from the trigger of closer. I was a USMC officer for six years active service and have been shooting firearms since 1982. We taught our Marines NEVER to disengage the safety on their rifles and pistols until they were aimed at the target sought to be destroyed. Especially in combat situations where you have fellow Marines maneuvering around you and the consequences of an unintended discharge could be a dead or wounded fellow Marine. A good friend of mine is a paramedic and had the sad experience of having to give first aid to a hunter who was shot by one of his friends by mistake. This friend carried his rifle loaded and the safety off so he could shoot any deer that suddenly popped up. The weapon was dropped by mistake and went off. End result: man crippled for life and for no good reason. If you do even minimal practice daily, you can learn to bring the weapon to bear and flip off the safety in no time (half second tops).

All the pro's of the 308, but the manual of arms of an AR-15, AR-15 takedown, even some AR-15 parts interchange. Also, potentially more accurate with a free float barrel. Yet on the other hand, the M1, M14 has something modern rifles will NEVER have, they got SOUL! I have a Benelli M4 for home defense, loaded with #4 buck for that penetration issue you mentioned. My M1A is a Standard model and I'm putting the 4th gen scope mount on it to use with my Sig Saur BDX scope and rangefinder. I won't have much of the "zero" or "stovepipe" issues with this mount as some of the others have. I will soon have a Harris bipod on the QD stud I will install at the front sling. No plans to use anything other than NATO standard M80 ball ammo. Better to be well practiced and expert at one thing than to be mediocre at a half-dozen things. It is my hunting rifle and I have chosen it for two reasons: it is a design I can count on for reliability and accuracy *_and I will have ammo availability for it no matter what happens._* NATO isn't doing away with the 7.62x51 anytime soon (the next 30 years) and military bases and police stations all over the US will have M80 ball ammo in their stocks. Crooked quartermasters and cops will have some to trade for a wild ham or quarter of venison so I won't have to worry about running out of ammo. This is another good reason to be proficient with the M80 ammo. You know it's strengths and weaknesses (lol "weaknesses") and as Harry Callahan once said, *"A man's **_got_** to know his limitations."* So I have the Benelli, the Springfield and two 9mm Luger pistols (one EDC pocket and one combat sidearm) and one 9mm carbine: All running on NATO ammo. I think having at least three guns that run on these three calibers is a must. A nice 22lr rifle and pistol is OK, and 10,000 rounds of 22lr only weighs about 80 pounds, but sooner or later you could run out of ammo for those, while having guns that run on NATO ammo will be less likely to become entirely obsolete.

ACCURACY, DURABILITY & RELIABILITY: M1A is made by more than just Springfield Armory otherwise known as SAI.... SAI is the starting point for M1A......... The top of the line forged M1SA's are made in NY by a company called LRB...... The M1A platform is VERY reliable, they will run forever and are not finicky at all they eat any type of 308 / 7.62x51 ammo....... Once in a tiny while You will break a cast extractor on a Springfield Armory brand M1A.... Get a GI brand forged extractor and replace it with the Springfield factory extractor.....You can easily load up super accurate long range 308 rounds using Berger VLD 155 grain bullets and the old standby 4895 powder for the M1A ...The more popular 'standard' for accuracy and range round is the 168 grain Sierra Match King ...........308 is super easy to reload I got 1/4 MOA at 100 yards 5 shot groups ! ! ! ....Do NOT use high-pressure factory 308 hunting rounds for plinking they overpressure the operating rod/gas system, use the only mil-spec 7.62x51 ammo made for M1A >>>>>>> The Federal American Eagle 168 grain is M1A pressure curve specific and not that expensive .....There is an entire culture of M1A- M14 enthusiasts like me out there....Go to www.M14Forum.com everyone is super nice and the worlds most sought after M1A rifle smiths hang out there.....RU-vid has an M1A smith channel go to TonyBen , He is a super M1A enthusiast and Marine, He has a nice channel here on YT.......I know and have met a LOT of Vietnam 'combat' vets who wanted to ditch the M1A for the M16 , they all wanted their M14's back ........... The only complaint is ever heard about M1A is "It so heavy" ..... NO no it's not You're too weak ! ...... The FAL is a legendary design for good reason. It's a very capable platform, which is why ninety nations or so used it during the height of the Cold War. The M14-platform does have a few advantages over it, however. Due to its clam-shell receiver design, which opens to give easy access to the bolt-BC group, the upper receiver does not make a stable platform for the mounting of optics. Which is why the FAL has not had much success as a precision rifle platform, a sniping or designated marksman weapon. DSA, Inc. of Lake Barrington, IL. - widely known for their metric-pattern SA58 SLR FALs, finally solved the problem, but not until years after the heyday of the FAL. The M14/M1A has substantially better OEM/factory iron sights and trigger, both of which make a huge difference in how the rifle performs and how it shoots. We can probably say that the M14-platform makes a better precision rifle than the FAL. Sure enough, as far back as the Vietnam War, Army and Marine marksmen had used their M14s to good effect as precision rifles. The top-scoring American sniper of that conflict, the late U.S. Army SSGT Bert Waldron, 9th ID (109 confirmed kills), used an accurized M14 as his primary weapon, both with daylight and night (starlight) scopes. I heard/read someplace, and it is probably accurate, that the FAL makes an excellent general-issue battle rifle for the non-specialist infantryman. A very capable weapon, easily-understood by the conscript as well as the professional soldier. The Aussies certainly used theirs to great effect during the Battle of Long Tan in August, 1966. Ironic given its status as the most-widely used battle rifle of the Cold War, I am aware of only one nation which still uses the FAL in front-line service, that nation being Brazil. Perhaps equally-ironic, its main competitors have outlasted it, namely not just the M14/M1A, but the CETME/G3 and AR10. All of which are still in use in various armies and hot-spots around the globe.

I know absolutely NOTHING about either rifle, that said. I like the M14 on looks alone. I've had my eye on them for a few years now. Tacti cool reasoning I like the scout. Very good video, thank you for your service

Good video and to the point. My home defense go to is a Mossberg 590 A1 shotgun but I also have the M1A as for me it is both nostalgic (was my first rifle when I was in the military) and it is a bad ass proven / reliable / battle rifle that has a powerful penetration capability at longer range than the AR's and AK's.
