The Springfield Armory M1A Standard Walnut Rifle! 

Been wanting one for years, just bought one today. I went into the local gun shop for a couple. Boxes of .45 and walked out with an M1A and 100 rnds of .308, God bless America! Thanks for the video sir.

I gave my dad one of these for Christmas brand new about 15 years ago with a copy of The Rifleman’s Creed as the Christmas Card. He used the M14 in the USMC from 64-67. After unwrapping it, he proceeded to field strip it sitting on the sofa in front of the Christmas tree from memory after 40 years.

Great M14/M1A rifle. I have been shooting them for 45 years now and I have always loved their accuracy and performance in service rifle competition at 200, 300, and 600 yards. I won my Distinguished Rifleman badge with one so I will always have a soft spot for these great rifles!

Great rifle, when I enlisted into the US Army in March 1968, basic training in Fort Jackson SC (Tank Hill), we trained with the M14. It was a great battle rifle. Didn’t see an M16 until I attended ARVIN training at Fort Dix before leaving for Vietnam in February 1969. Love your videos keep up the great work and, “Welcome Home”.

I always wanted a Garand, since before they started making these "civilian" M14 rifles. But, my health (and finances, which by some strange coincidence nosedived along with my health) never permitted such a luxury. It didn't help that finding a "local" CMP club was problematic. Oh, well, I'm an _old_ fart now, haven't been shooting for well over a decade, and with my neck held together by a mess of fused bones and titanium plates and screws, I don't think I'd be able to absorb recoil as effortlessly as I did forty+ years ago. Being able to watch you enjoying _your_ new rifle does give a measure of vicarious enjoyment, so I can't complain _that_ much. Congratulations on giving yourself a well-earned gift like that!

Beautiful rifle, the brand new H & R I took to Vietnam looked just like that except it was select fire. Nov. 1965 Ft Polk LA.; Several of us were sent to a two day armorer class all about the M14, we then instructed the rest of the training company on the us and care of the M14. I fired second in the company for qualification. 54yrs after leaving Vietnam I still want one of these, I do have a couple M1 Garands. To quote Bob Hope "Thanks for the memories", maybe I'll trade off a few other guns and get one yet.

My favorite rifle of all time. I have acquired all models except the “tanker” model that was recently released. I think the loaded model in a walnut stock is my favorite but the scout squad sure is handy. Thanks for sharing.

There is nothing like inspecting a brand new rifle or any firearm. I bought my M1a in 1998 and still have it. I think you will be very pleased with it on the range.😀

I've been thinking about one of these for years, back to when a standard walnut model like yours could be found for under a grand, probably should've bought it then. This video has reignited that desire. At least 308 ammo is making a comeback on the shelves. Congrats, Sir, on your rifle!

Grew up shooting a Nat match version and still have it in the gun safe. The one we have has a M-14 stock on it when my dad bought it thure the Nat Match program. I love the system so much years ago I found a used Socom cqb at a gun shop. I didn't even ask the shop owner how much he wanted for it just handed him a Bank card and he handed me the paperwork. Took off the cheap scout style scope the last owner had on it and sited in the irons. Some of the best sites ever put on a rifle if you ask me. They truly are built to last. Id take my M1a's over a AR 15 any day. You and Benny have a great day and a safe and bountiful hunting season this fall.

Beautiful stock, I love it. I only want for two more guns, a m14 and a BAR . I probably never get a BAR but most likely will have a m14 (m1a)

Great video. I bought my first SA M1A in 1989, and of course like an idiot I sold it a couple years later. Two years ago I finally decided to get another one. I have always enjoyed Springfield Armorys product, and always found them to be tackdrivers. Thank goodness SA has continued with the M1A line for all these years, and kept the quality high. Eagle industries use tomato a very nice weapon bag that mounted to the stock for raising check weld for scope use. Again thanks for sharing your new treasure!

I have an M1A scout with a walnut scout. Love it! FYI the bolt and op rod are supposed to be greased for lubrication not CLP.

I shot an accurized M1A in competition for years and then made the change to the AR. I am certified, National Guard, as an armorer for the M14/M1A. Great rifle to work with. Semper Fi.

Oh boy, I just brought my brand new M1A Standard Walnut home today and man she is a beauty! I'm so excited!

My father who was a WWII Marine veteran always talked about his Springfield M1 Garand and how it was great battle rifle. I thought they weren't as cool as a M1 carbine with the detachable magazine. We had these discussions when I was still in grammar school. He had a chance to buy a pristine CMP carbine for 75 bucks back in 1966, he passed on it. A couple years later, I got to shoot a M14, still in grammar school. I was hooked , I still remember the smell of the linseed oiled stock and the gunpowder smoke in the air. I had remembered the H&R brochure I had seen 4 or 5 years earlier showing that H&R had got a military contract and was making M14.s for the government. Years later as an adult, I saved up some money and got an M1A, it mostly had new military parts. I still have that rifle today. I bought two M14 parts kits and built them on forged billet receivers just for the fun of it. Great rifles that are tack drivers.

When I bought my m1a loaded they had a promotion for 3 free magazines. Might want to see if they still have it. Very fun gun had my friends 13 year old hitting milk jugs at 500yrds with it.

I'm very glad and happy for you that you finally rectified that situation. My accurized M1A is my favorite rifle and I wouldn't trade it for the world. One thing though, during disassembly, you should also know how to remove the gas plug and gas piston, to clean carbon from them, using either an M14 combination tool or a 3/8" box wrench. As for the bolt, it is really not difficult to disassemble and reassemble using a 30-06 casing and starting with the bolt still in the receiver, you rarely need to do this but it's a good skill if you're paying attention and you're careful. Requires the use of a punch. I do recommend you replace the stamped steel spring guide with a National Match round profile guide, it keeps the recoil spring from binding and the action will operate a lot smoother.

Beautiful. The M1A just looks like it means business. It's on my list. And, I think I'll do the standard (instead of the other grades) just like you did. I just wished you'd have cleaned it with us. Looking forward to shooting and sighting videos with it. Thanks, and congratulations!

Have fun with your new purchase and thanks for the great vid. I purchased one of these new in late 2019 after waiting many years as well. Only I've never shot it yet due to wanting to conserve all the ammo I could during the COVID19 ammo shortage. But .308 ammo prices are coming down down a bit again, so I can order a shipment. I look forward to getting this baby to the range to sight it in and enjoying a good test firing. I'm expecting it to be pretty accurate. I have many rifles but I'm sure this will be one I'll never part with. Some people really talk these M1As down, but I sold my AR-10 to help fund this purchase and I've got no regrets about it at all.

Christmas came early! I'm envious of your newest acquisition, and looking forward to seeing you get some rounds downrange. It's been 45 years since I had the opportunity to shoot the M14. The unit that I belonged to in the Army has quite an array of Weaponry, and I picked up the M14 every chance I could. I understand the military's reasoning for replacing the M14 for the M16, but the M14 was still quite a rifle!

I've had the privilege of earning my double distinguished expert badge and was on my way to High Master after about 22,000 rounds of for record and practice rounds with DCM (CMP) issue guns and several M1A Super Match rifles. It should be noted that my first DCM rifle was an M1 in 30-06 and while becoming an active competitor for the State and the Guard, an M1 with a 308 (small base 7.62×51) chamber sleeve. All rifles used in National Match Competitive events afterward were privately purchased. My shooting career reached its apex during All Guard tryouts in Pheonix Arizona May 1992. I'm proud to have performed to within the standards acceptable for membership in the All Guard team. Ironically, 15 years in the regular Army didn't see shooting on any teams, but much pistol shooting, my first Sauer 202 and Deutsche WBK. Almost even got the Jagdtschein. That was the only other time I signed for an issue rifle..which held under .50 m.o.a. at 600 yards. I only had one privately owned rifle I knew held that good. In fact, skill level reached a point that when my X count was low, that is how I knew my barrels were reaching their precision service life..usually between 3,500 and 5,000 rounds at the most. Douglas XX air guaged, 1:10 twist heavy match barrels, glassed and lugged action, thick or thin wal-nut MIL- SPEC stocks or thick fiberglass stocks. 'Figure 8 gas operating system' // there were the National Match sites and all else IAW MIL-SPEC excluding the weight which was obviously much heavier than the standard M14 rifle.

Congratulations!!! I was able to shoot the old M14's and M21's on occasion while stationed in Germany back in the 90's (yes, some arms rooms still had them). I bought my match grade M1A three years ago, and added a scope last year. She is a gorgeous, reliable, tack-driving masterpiece. Best of luck with her. I've had great success with Federal Premium Gold Medal, Sierra Match King 168gr prior to the government-prompted ammo shortage (prices are crazy now). Scarce availability of primers has slowed down reloading, but I have enough on-hand to last a while; closely replicating my results with 42gr of IMR4064 using the same Sierra bullet. I downloaded the old 25yd/250yd military zero targets off the internet that work great to get started.

Recently purchased a Tanker version from S/A. Enjoying it very much. Thank you for the video.

I've always used the leather 1907 sling on both of my M1's and M1A's for shooting CMP Matches, but I also like and have the M1 web sling too.

I purchased a walnut version about six months ago. I put an ultimax rail and Burris 2-7x scout scope. Ive tried over the years mounting different scopes to different M1As. I finally found a setup that doesn’t ruin the cheek weld and natural Model 12 style handling characteristics. Also, I purchased ten of the checkmate 20rd magazines. I’ve only run three cycles thru each mag (600 rounds total) but have had 100% reliability out of them, so far.

I have a little box of cash in my gun safe where I stash my WDK, (Wife Doesn't Know), money earned doing restoration and minor repair work on firearms for friends. Qualified as a marksman at Fort Leonardwood in 1967 with my 14. Just an amazing weapon, 100 yds was nothing. Had mine apart a few times too! Wish I could buy one here in sunny Commyfornia….

I started out building ARs a few years ago then began a fascination with the AK platform. I’ve now acquired my first M1A after whetting my appetite with the Ruger mini 14/30, I got the same model as yours but the loaded version, and have my eye on the Scout Squad model. I have to say, I’m most excited about the M1A/M14/M1 Garand platform. It’s so solid and reliable, and the history, heritage and workmanship is outstanding. I feel like I’m in on a closely-held secret that’s on the verge of going public at any moment. Hope you have many years of fun with yours.

A fine rifle indeed! I own that model has served me well from range trips to hunting whitetail and took it to a fighting rifle class. I wouldn't expect it to shoot MOA at 100 as she sits. Before sending it off to Ron Smith at Smith enterprise in AZ. It would group 1.5 to 2 moa after Ron worked his magic its a 1 MOA rifle all day long.

I'm hoping to pick up my own new M1A tomorrow. Right out of high school I qualified with the M14 in 1966 at Fort Bragg and it was my issued rifle most of my three year enlistment except for the M16A1 in Vietnam. I love both rifles and since they excel in different applications it's good to have both. I chose the Standard model with wood stock for the same reasons you did and because it is the closest configuration to the M14s I had over 50 years ago.

Very nice! I recently got myself a Bula Defense M21 with an inbuilt scope mount (and it's grooved so I can use iron sights if needed!). Love it, it's easily my favorite rifle. Thanks for sharing!

Yep 👍, that’s a sweet rifle!! I bought one about a year ago and I love it. I swapped out the flashhider for the one that has the lug. I loved this rifle so much I bought the mini 14 also.

When I was in the Navy I served on two Tin Cans. We had 12 M-14s in the Armory (only one had a Whoopee Switch). Great rifles. As a civilian, I couldn't wait to get a Springfield Armory M1A1. It shoots smooth as butter.

Good Morning Sir, Congratulations to you on your purchase of "The Last True American Wood & Steel Warrior!!!" The M1 Garand and M14/M1A are truly works of art!!! I had the opportunity to use the M14 on active duty in the Navy, while standing "Shark Watch" for swim call. I was one of a few sailors on my ship that were qualified to use the rifle. After I completed my hitch in the Navy I went Army and Also qualified with the M14. I have always preferred the M14 or the M16/M4, the sights were better on the M14/M1A. I own a Springfield Standard grade M1A, since the early 80's. My M1A was built with several GI parts, such as the GI TRW barrel, etc. I have upgraded several parts on my rifle and it's a shooter!!!
