Hi! I’m so glad I found your video! (And sorry my message is longer that I thought it would be) I too had that desire to be an MD and just kept suppressing it. I’m currently an RN w my BSN and I’ve been a nurse for 5.5 years. I worked in a rehab facility for like maybe 4years w my ASN then I worked part time while going back for my BSN, with now 1.5yr at a hospital setting. That feeling of being a doctor kept coming back and I was like no I’m already here I’m ok, but deep down I wasn’t. My spark got ignited again while I was speaking with an intern about a patient and he said “full disclosure, it’s my first day” and I, weirdly, loved it. Some nurses are like omg it’s July but I was excited for them and I envied them. So I said F it, I’m going to go for it. Obviously the universe is telling me something and I just need to let go and pursue. Fortunately the medical school I picked out that is in my area requires ANY bachelors degree, so when I reached out to them they actually told me my nursing background is a huge advantage, so I’m going to take the science classes I need to help pass the MCAT, they also have a mentorship program that I’m gong to apply for later this year. I feel scared, nervous, excited and Even though I’m 34, I don’t want to be 45 and look back thinking I could have done it. Time is going to pass by, might as well use it :)

8:19-8:45 THIS is the reason I went into nursing. I thought we would be involved in that part of improving the patients health but from a slightly different perspective, but after working as a nurse for almost 3 years, I’ve seriously reconsidered entering medicine (especially since my highest score on the NCLEX was in diagnosis) Plus, the part about being the patient’s advocate being a mantra in nursing school - I can’t help but think to myself “how can I be my patient’s advocate when my knowledge of the human body is nil compared with a physician?” I’m left craving deeper knowledge of the human body, and life, almost every day.

First off, thank you so much for this video! This is exactly what I was looking for when I searched RN to DO. I have been a nurse for over seven years and I was looking to start an NP program. It hasn’t worked out for various reasons but when I was growing up I always wanted to be a doctor. I even took several science classes for premed before starting nursing school. As the pandemic has gone on I have really been motivated to go back to school for my NP but started to get discouraged when I saw fellow nurses who have graduated with their NP not able to find a job. Your account really resonated with me about liking autonomy and being able to advocate for the patient as a provider. My mind was already made up to pursue a DO program, but this is the whipped cream on top of confirmation. I feel like the restrictions placed on NPs, what they aren’t allowed to do, really solidified my desire to pursue a DO. Thank you! Thank you!!

Hello, I must say I’m glade that I came across this video. As a child I dreamed of becoming a MD. My grandfather was an MD and my grandmother was a midwife. However after high school I took the nursing route due to some unfortunate life changing situation. I did not go the traditional route of going straight for your BSN. Instead I did CNA, LPN, and now RN(An ADN program). This fall I will be starting my BSN online at Widener university while working in the Neuro ICU. The BSN program will take me 3 semester to complete. Recently I’ve been going back and forth between becoming a CRNA or an anesthesiologist. Few years ago I was really set on becoming a CRNA when I worked alongside one in the electroconvulsive therapy suite at a psych hospital. Which is why I will be working in the ICU(working in the ICU is one of the requirements before applying for CRNA school). More than ever I’m really thinking about becoming an anesthesiologist. However being in my early 30s is making me to wonder if I should go for it. That is because I will have to go for another 8years. 4years of med school and another 4 years as an anesthesiologist resident. I will continue to think it over while completing my BSN. I was wondering how-come you did not complete your post baccalaureate with Widener University instead you went to Jefferson? Is it because you are looking into Sidney Kimmel medical college?
@lifelines2825

Wow! Thank you so much for sharing some of your story with me! Feel free to also reach out to our email! I did not continue with Widener because I wanted a place where I would be heavily connected to advisors that specifically understood how to advise non traditional pre meds and could connect me to resources easily. Also the fact that the program was connected to a med school reassured me that I would be in an environment that would really help me to develop for med school. Also I wanted courses where professors knew I was going to take MCAT and structured lessons toward this. Hope this helps!

@Noktackey1

This is the path that I really want to do, I am 39 doing pre-req to get into nursing and plan to go forward to an MD. I already have a Bachelor's from like 20 year ago with not good GPA (3.02). One of the biggest concern is I cannot be lack of sleep like when I was younger anymore. I used to study 14 hours with just short lunch and dinner break but now I started to get exhausted after 1.30 hrs study. I think big but my body is old and seems can't go bigger along with my inspiration. Do you have any suggestions about this? Thank you so much.

Many people continue this path in their 30s,40s,50s. At whatever time that you enter this journey it will come with hardships. You would have to decide if it is something that you want. I have classmates and even some nurse practitioners in their 30s and begin doing the reqs to go to medical school

currently have a 4.0 and in the process of applying to a nursing program. going to take gen chem and ochem during winter/spring/fall before the nursing begins. I've realized that I must really push myself to realize these goals and it won't be easy. I just don't know if i should drop the nursing completely or follow through. I suppose it would be better to have a bsn than to have a biology degree that you can't find work with. idk we'll see how this goes
@lifelines2825
@lifelines2825 Год назад
I usually recommend to people to analyze why they want to be a nurse. If you have no desire to be a nurse and just using it as a fall back plan then it would make more sense to pursue the necessary measures to go to medical school. You currently have a 4.0 so this means that you are diligent in coursework, so if you can do great in nursing pre reqs you can also apply that determination to med school pre reqs and also get in. Please do research and weigh the pros and cons

ooouuu this was helpful. I’m a senior in hs I want to do nursing as a premed but not sure how I would get my prerequisites for med school and it’s hard to find people who did nursing as a pre med. most people did nursing thinking they would be a nurse but ended up switching their majors to a science. Do you think nursing as a premed is a good idea & do you think I can get my perquisites at the same time or should I do like you said and do it over the summer? I do just want to go into medical school right after I graduate but I’m afraid doing nursing will hold me back. Also Are you still going to take the NCLEX ?
@lifelines2825
@lifelines2825 3 года назад
Thank you for watching! You are really ahead of the game by doing a lot of the research. I think that if you want to just go into med school right after graduation then you should just worry about premed. Maybe instead of biology pre med, do public health pre med. I mentioned the over the summer idea but that is actually ALOT of stress and could could you not to do great on the MCAT. For where yo are I would do pre med and Not nursing but immerse yourself in things early such as clubs, getting into the hospitals, volunteering so that you still get a good "medical world background" that I was talking about but have a more fast forward approach. If your goal is to be a physician start with it and do amazing! Also yes I will be taking the NCLEX before starting my pre reqs. Nursing will hold you back in terms of how long it will take to get to med school. Dont let people discourage you from medicine. Also follow us on social media to keep connected!
