WHY I CHOSE OPHTHALMOLOGY | A Resident's Perspective 👁👁

In this one, I'll go over why i chose ophthalmology, why you could consider doing ophthalmology, and why for me it is the best specialty. Ophthalmology offers some great perks and is in my opinion one of the coolest types of surgery there is, these are seven of the main reasons I picked ophthalmology as a specialty. If you're a medical student looking to decide on a specialty, consider ophthalmology. Choosing a medical specialty can be a nerve-wracking experience as a medical student. Try to inform yourself about all the options the best you can then go with your gut!

You actually mentioned most of the stuff I love about ophthalmology, I think that this specialty feeds my perfectionism as I like to know all about something instead of just have knowledge about so many things together. I also draw and use my hands alot, so I need a speciality that makes me capable of “acquire a skill and master it” as you mentioned. Finally, the charity campaigns and doing free surgeries for those areas lacking medical care is really the corner stone of my ophthalmology dream, and whenever I feel tired and think that I’m an IMG so it actually makes it even harder to be an ophthalmologist, I remember that this specialty will help me provid proper healthcare to those outreached, poor places.

So eloquently put Zach- nice video. Although this might sound a bit obnoxious, Ophthalmology is one of the few specialties where other specialties cannot interfere. For example, a nephrologist can always interfere in the managment of a cardiologist or neurologist etc. BUT, ophthalmologists are highly valuable to other specialties in the diagnosis of life-threatening conditions. We are sought after in cases such as diagnosing potential child abuse (non-accidental injury)- a difficult skill in paediatrics, potential brain pathology in ALL age groups, and picking up dangerous diagnoses even during routine checks. In polytrauma (e.g. a RTA)- the potential to save someone's eye over-rules many other injuries except for where the life is in danger. We're basically top dogs, and Zach is on his way to being a great ophthalmologist and RU-vidr ;)

Interesting you mentioned Nepal! My roommate’s (who is also an MS3) family is in the USA because an ophthalmologist sponsored them to get here long ago after meeting them in the villages of Nepalese mountains. An even more fun fact is that doc taught my friends dad how to do cataract surgery and he ended up performing many many surgeries on his own with very limited resources. Helped the blind see again… amazing. Also your videos are amazing!

The worst part about ophthalmology is trying to fit all the things you like about it in your personal statement for residency application.

How many hours/week do you think the avg ophtho attending at a private practice works? What about retina? I know they tend to work a bit more/are on call
@doctoreyeballmd7493
@doctoreyeballmd7493 4 года назад
I think it’s highly variable and There is a lot of opportunity to structure your work day how you would like. Sam may work four days a week and others will do 11 hour days five days a week. I think it just depends on how busy you want to be. I would say retina can be a bit busier. Some of the private practice ones I’ve worked with may go 10 hours a day.

Thanks a lot for ur videos, ur awesome I want this speciality for the same main reasons, but I'm a little bit scared about my ability to be a surgeon because I didn't decide that earlier in medschool, do you have any advice for me ?
@doctoreyeballmd7493
@doctoreyeballmd7493 4 года назад
I think some people may be more coordinated and gifted as surgeons, but I think it is very few people who cannot become good enough at it if they work hard. The physical demands to do these surgeries are less than you would think. As far as when you decided to go into the field during med school, I think it just depends. It may be more difficult if you've never done any ophtho rotations or research but deciding late in and of itself won't preclude you, I know people who decided very late to do ophthalmology and did fine. As long as you have a compelling reason as to why you want to do it and your other stats hold up I don't think deciding later is necessarily a detriment in and of itself.
