This video is primarily for college students who are premed or medical students. The opinions in the video are mine alone based on my own life experience.
So, this is a question that has both a simple and a very complicated answer…the simple answer is yes. If you have the ability, the time and the will to excel in college academically and then continue to get-after-it in medical school and you then are faced with the choice of what career path to pursue - ophthalmology is great. But as in all things in life, there are pros and cons.

Very informative but at the same time very honest,as a young ophtalmologist in a foreign country I must say that at the end the greatest satisfaction in our profession comes from a moral standpoint,their is no other compensation bigger then making someone see again :)

Currently an Ophthalmology resident in Chicago. Just stumbled upon your videos and they’ve been really useful in my training so far! Would love to see more videos on interesting clinical exam findings/diagnoses and what your thought process is in diagnosing and treating the disease.

I’m an incoming M1 (Fall 2021) and loved this video! Very informative. My interest in medicine started with ophthalmology when my grandmother had both of her corneas replaced when I was 13. Just shadowed an ophthalmologist in January and it was the coolest thing ever.

One other issue with ophthalmology (don't know if you mentioned this in the video) are musculoskeletal issues- chronic neck pain, shoulder pain, elbow pain and back pain from postural issues related to the slit lamp and operating microscope

Greetings from Germany Dr. Wong. Im a resident Ophthalmologist in Germany, working in a specialized clinic for refractive surgery. I follow all your videos regularly. It is hard to find doctors with great knowledge, its even harder to find doctors with great wisdom, and i believe you have them both. I wish i could learn from you directly hand in hand, but the distance makes that hard. Keep making these great videos so that at the very least all of us who are unlucky to learn directly from you, could learn something through Your videos. All the best!

I think one area you did not mention is those optomologist who transition to practice of doing non surgical procedures. Many do that type of practice for many reasons.

Hello, I have only one question. Does a IMG from Greece with Step1 (241) and step2 (pass) has any chance of finding a residency programm for Ophthalmology in USA?

Dermatology is a great field. Radiology is a great field. I see radiology going more and more virtual in the future which means international competition. Artificial intelligence for radiology will be a thing going forward IMHO.

Shannon Wong, MD thank you for the quick reply. Do you have any tips for achieving a high Step 1 score? I know Ophthalmology also has a high Step 1 requirement.

@@ShannonWongMD currently in Radiology only American trained and certified radiologists are able to practice in the US. do you see that changing? Would you recommend a family member of yours to pursue radiology with those risks of AI and Outsourcing?

What are your thoughts on the pros and cons on doing optometry instead of opthalmology?
@ShannonWongMD
@ShannonWongMD 3 года назад
Optometry: 4 years college, 4 years OD school (8 years after high school). Career involves diagnosis and medical treatment of eye conditions. Average salary: $100-200K/year. Ophthalmology: 4 years college, 4 years medical school, 1 year general medical/surgical internship, 3 years of ophthalmology residency (12 years after high school). Career involves diagnosis, medical and surgical treatment of eye conditions. Average salary: $250-500K/year. Key differentiators: length of educational process, scope of practice, earning potential.

What pre med course should I choose to become an ophthalmologist?
@noahbrown9497
@noahbrown9497 2 года назад
You can major and get a degree in anything for your undergraduate studies, but there are a few courses that are considered "pre-requisites" for medical school that you must take to apply. These courses vary between each medical school but typically include 2 semesters of biology, 2 semesters of chemistry, biochemistry, 2 semesters of physics, etc.

Great Video! How come Ophto is one of the most competitive and sought out residencies if the starting salary in desirable locations is often below 200k? I understand salary is never a deciding factor however it just confuses me since usually medical specialty competitiveness is driven by demand for high paying salary.
