I have owned both breeds...& I do agree...mostly in your assessment...I live in a subberb...but in a park system. My Rotties were Awesome family members & great protectors. My Boerboels were also Great family members & The BEST protectors. Non Aggressive but with their size & stature very ominous.. No one would dare challenge them. As far as training.maybe the Rottie was a little more intelligent...but with the Willingness to please his master..my Boels would do anything to please me. I Loved both breeds...BUT... It's BOERBOELS for me All the Way.

We have a boerboel and live in a townhouse with a tiny yard in Kenya. He is my 21 year old daughter's best friend and while he's very alpha, respects me as the pack leader and does not challenge the pecking order. He's highly intelligent and trainable, the best protector (both in terms of natural instinct and sheer physical size), and a great family dog (very affectionate, wants to be with his people, etc.). He loves all the neighborhood kids and would protect any of them, and is as gentle as a feather with small children. That being said, he does get a minimum of 90 minutes a day of walks, usually more like 2.5 hours. And still has tons of energy to play. For us, we're absolutely in love with boerboels - our Chimo shares a bed with my daughter. Interestingly, his 'girlfriend' is a rottie and they love each other!

My service dog is a Boerboel. She has many obedience titles (the first and ONLY Boerboel to earn the challenging AKC Rally Champion title!). She is incredibly intelligent and was SO easy to train. (She makes me look like a good trainer!). My 13 yo daughter has a 6 month old Rott pup that is also shockingly fast to learn. She will start competing with her next month and I suspect they will do great together. Both breeds are amazing for just slightly different reasons. I love the Rottie, but the uniqueness of the Boerboel is what will draw me back to them when my current dog retires!

@mavisme4645
@mavisme4645 2 месяца назад
@@mustafashulqamy1844 - Honestly, it's best to own a 'normal' dog before getting a hardcore working breed because their drives can be more than a newbie can handle. It's not just a simple equation of knowing how to make a dog sit, down, etc., it's about being able to read a dog's behavior and knowing what is going on in their heads. Different types of dogs think differently. Herding dogs get frustrated easily, they tend to nip, and they can be pushy. Working dogs can be dominant, territorial, and protective. When pushed to bite, they mean it. Hounds can get overwhelmed with smells or sights and might ignore you. Each group has its challenges ... and it's important to know how to train using those challenges to create success!

That is the problem, city people in South Africa found out about our farm dog the Boerboel and now try lay claim to it, starting clubs and associations etc, but they do not know or understand the dog. The Boerboel has barely changed in 200 years it was bred for the farm by the farmer, it is not a city dog was never tended to be in cities with the noise, high congestion of people and smells. This is why you will find that Boerboels on the farm have very different personalities to those in the city or small holdings, they are calmer less likely to attack. They need lots of space and lots of stimulation. Their name says it all BOERBOEL Farmers dog. City people must stay away from this breed because they giving it a bad name due to placing it into stressful situations. The SABBS and all kennel clubs have no claim or right to have any say regarding these dogs as they have had nothing to do with the breed until recently and their only interest in the breed is financial, the breed has survived for hundreds of years almost unchanged with out city people try to dictate who may breed them, what defines them or who may use the term. None of these organisations are from the farm, and they have no idea what a Boerboel is. One look at the majority of the registered breeders will clearly show you that mass production (ie money) not love or understanding is the only driving factor for the forming of the SABBS. The dogs are breed in large numbers, kept in cages for hours per day and have little to no access to the wild. Boerboel through the ages (bred by farmers for farmers) are breed slowly, often years between pregnancies (unlike SABBS members who breed them as often as they can) and from birth they are free roamers, this is important to ensure that the dogs muscles build keeps pace with its growth rate, non farm breed Boerboels have a much higher fat %, live shorter lives and have hip problems due to the idiots at SABBS thinking they are dealing with Rotties not Boerboels, this entire talk of the angle of the back legs is the reason for the hip problems, Boerboels have a very slight angle almost straight, this reduces the strain on their hips from their mass it also allows them more rapid changes in direction and higher jumps, essential tools for them to do the job they were bred for, killings Hyenas, Lions, leopards. SABBS and US kennels try claim 2 walks a day is sufficient for these beauties, what utter rubbish these are dogs who are on the move a lot 2h exercise a day a way below their needs (another cause for their so called aggressiveness and hip problems) Oubaas, my grandfather's Boerboel was a highly protective of us children, if one of the other dogs hurt one of us it was the Boerboel that sorted out the guilty dog. In 1976 my grandfather bought another Boerboel as Oubaas was getting old, Nero was my dog and lived to the age 15 when he had to be put down as my grandfather had moved into the city after loosing his farm and Nero went insane, Oubaas died at the age of 17. I have in the last month been talking to my friends who grew up on the farms in the region and out of 20 of us 18 grew up with Boerboels, NOT one had a dog with hip problems and the average age was 16, proving that the SO CALLED know it alls of the breed are actually destroying the breed.

In regards to the Boerboel, it depends on the temperament of the Boerboel. My Boerboel is from South Africa from Dopper lines. I lived in a tiny house in the suburbs when I had gotten him, and he lived with 6 other dogs. So if you can imagine living with that many other dogs, cats, chickens, etc, we were all very cramped lol But Boerboels are adaptable creatures. I didn't make a big deal about it so neither did he. I now live in the mountains, but there isn't a lot of space either to roam. The houses are very close to each other and there's not much of a yard. I now have 15 dogs and I just take them out to the park, stores, other mountains to hike, and wherever else I can bring a dog. A Boerboel can live in the city and do just fine as well. Like I had mentioned, it really depends on the temperament of the Boerboel and its energy level. All of my dogs are of medium energy which works for my lifestyle.

First off, nothing wrong with your pronunciation. I fully understand and respect your reason for choosing a Rotti. Boerboels however don't do too badly in Urbane environments, the vast majority of Boerboels in South Africa are kept in urban areas as guard dogs because of the high crime rates. You do however have to keep them exercised and mentally stimulated. I would say to you to follow your passion in your future and get a Boerboel one day, there is no better companion to be had in the dog world.

I was very disappointed when you did not get a Boerboel. For those of us who like large breed dogs, it is the perfect companion. I don’t know where you got the rottie is more intelligent because that is not true. The Boerboel is highly intelligent and extremely devoted to his family, especially children. That ball was dropped. Also, I live in suburbia and my 3-year old Boerboel is magnificent. He commands attention EVERYWHERE he goes. He has been so well trained professionally that even trainers compliment him. You know their look is awesome with a longer life span than the rottie. I really thought you were gonna step out there with this still somewhat unknown giant. I’m still not sure why you chose the rottie but if that’s what you like, that’s what you like. I am happy for you. However, it seems like you only made the choice because you say the BB should live in a rural setting. This can be true of most large breeds including the rottie. The BB is, though, able to live in your suburban setting. Perhaps there is a BB in your future. You will NOT be disappointed.

They are complete Velcro dogs and can easily figure things out, especially if you are a week owner, for if you are, you will be dominated. They will protect you like no other, and absolutely have a natural affection for children. Rotties bark at anything more or less, when a Boerboel barks, something's up, then the growl, then God help you if he catches you. Look up their bite force, l kid you not... ..

It makes total sense. You did what most people have a hard time doing and thats making the more practical choice for your lifestyle. Its like when my wife had to convince me to get her a minivan instead of a suburban . Im still recovering from that decision 😥. Anyways, maybe a Boerboel in your future, my female has been great so far👍🏾!

If I were to pick a dog based solely on looks, I'd probably take a Thai Ridgeback or Boerboel too! Instead I'll be getting a Brittany, because they're much better adjusted to living in civilization. I lived in Cape Town for 6 years, and encountered plenty of Boerboels with perfectly nice temperaments. They were literally walking around off leash, occasionally coming up to people for a cuddle. However, it seems to me that the international community has taken these dogs and turned them into your standard asshole molosser, that looks like a gigantic French Bulldog. The first time I saw a pair of Boerboels in Germany, I didn't even recognize that they were supposed to be that same breed I've met so many times, until the owners straight up told me lol. (Those two were extremely short and wide, one was piebald and the other brindle, both colors I never saw in South Africa.) Based on the videos he did on them, it seems that American breeders are just breeding for looks and aggression, which sucks. The ones in his videos didn't look as bad as the ones in Germany, but their temperament seemed to be worse (based on the description the owners gave). I've never actually encountered one since moving to the US, which is probably a good thing.

Can you do a new video on the presa canario and your views on its temperament, train-ability, look, ability to function as a working breed compared to its function as a pet, and also can you do one in the future about best hunting breeds as well as a best fun to train and most challenging to train dog videos would really love to hear your view points on that

I've had both and personally dont think there is anything in it in terms of intelligence. But that said the Rottweiler is definitely more trainable with the Boerboel being very stubborn and independent especially when under 2 years. After 18 months to 2 years they really do take direction a lot better, very well in fact. At puppy stages i have never experienced a puppy like a Boerboel, the first 5 months you will be torn to shreds as the puppy biting/mouthing is unreal and they loose their sharp puppy teeth very late in life. If you have had any other pup and found the mouthing unbearable juat dont even consider the Boerboel. Once mature though the boerboel is so rewarding to work with and wouldn't be without at least one now. Great video about the selection process for you, glad you found the correct breed for your lifestyle

It's true, intelligence and trainability are not the same. But for the sake of putting it out there to the general public, and making sure they GET it, Zeke's explanations pretty much nail it. What matters most is the audience. A Boerboel is not suitable for most families, and how trainable a powerful breed is, is a part of that. I'm fine with the way this went.

Dude! Your pronunciation is perfect! I’m South African and I have 3 Boerboels and obviously I adore them. Equally, I would have 3 Rottweilers too. Both breeds are awesome. To each their own bro. Great video and I appreciate your level headed opinion. The only point I disagree with you about is trainability. My 3 are incredibly well trained and I believe it’s down to the individual dog, it’s environment and the human.

👍complement a breed with your lifestyle, rather than pick a dog and struggle to complement your lifestyle to their requirements and disposition. This is a major long-lasting decision for you and family members you live with. It is better to do some research to make sure you reach the suitable decision.

Great video. As an owner and small breeder of the Boerboel, I think you made the wrong choice. I have owned numerous different breeds and in my experience, none of them touch the Boerboel. i would challenge your comment on the Rottweiler being more intelligent than the Boerboel - this is not my experience at all. The Boerboel is very intelligent, but not only that, they are also extremely stable and predictable in terms of psychology. Once you, as an owner, build a bond with your Boerboel, they are incredibly obedient and easy trained. They also have an innate ability to tell friend from foe; they are very present and aware of their surroundings. No doubt a legacy of developing in Africa around dangerous wild animals. they are also a far more impressive physical specimen than a Rottweiler. Once you have owned a Boerboel, every other dog seems so small and fragile. They are really unlike other domestic dog breeds.

Well said...but other breeds are larger than a boerboel...most boerboel are relatively short....
@raymondfrench7165
@raymondfrench7165 4 года назад
@@RKalos Taller maybe. The Great Dane or Irish Wolfhound are taller, but also lighter. Many male adult Boerboels are over 90kg (200lbs), and that is lean (I know of a male in South Africa that is 107kg, lean...). There are only a few other breeds with the same kind of mass, bone thickness and build (Caucasian Shepherd, Tibetan Mastiff, etc). It is critical to understand how a breed was developed in order to judge it against other breeds. The Boerboel was developed over 300+ years in southern Africa in an incredibly harsh environment unlike any other in the world, where they were regularly tested against the wiildest of wildlife (leopards, baboons, hyenas, lions and others). Can you name even one other breed of dog that was developed in as tough an environment as that? Today's Boerboel is an exceptional dog, unlike any other, for a reason.

@@raymondfrench7165 Regardeless that the boerboels bred today have nothing to do with the "working dog story" ,i mean that these dogs bred today are too fat ,clumsy and definitely have lost their fierce temperament ,i havent seen a dog larger than a presa canario in size.Maybe they are fat and thick bone but they are short. I would guess that older type dogs must be athletic in order to run in the fields all day long together with the boers...

I grew up with dogs. Now we have our first Boerboel and he is AWESOME. I can't imagine ever getting another dog breed after having a Boerboel. Physically next level compared to almost any dog in the world. He diffuses most tense situations without barking - a serious stare from our big boy is enough to make any dog or human think twice. Incredibly intelligent and 100% predictable and stable psychology. He's even great with all the small neighborhood kids who love him. And while ours is very alpha, he respects me as the pack leader and never challenges me. And he's my daughter's very best friend.

"OE" in Afrikaans is pronounced like the "U" in Bull or full. its the same sound repeated bur-bull/boerboel. The 2 vowels together create a new vowel sound. the letters are not pronounced separately but as one vowel sound. We have 11 official languages in South Africa so just because someone is South African does't mean they know how to pronounce boerboel. trust me in this and you cant go wrong. Being a dog lover and a Boerboel fan, I do agree with you for the most part. I was considering the rottie as my next dog but the Boerboel won for a fee more realistic reasons. The rottie wins on trainability, territoriality. They lost on their history of attacks on owners, their cold temperate coats, their territoriality (they guard their yard well but as soon as the thief leaves that yard they refuse to chase after the individual), they have a little more tenacity to attack while going for long walks.
