My parents are doctors and I hate when people think that nurses are less than doctors. Everyone needs to know that nurses are so so amazing and are very hard working. Nurses are so so close to their patients which is crucial. Nurses are amazing!

Leena A. Can i ask you a question ? I want to become a doctor but the thing that keeps me off guard is the fact that people day that doctors have no free time and that the only thing they do is working ALL the time. I too want to start a family but idk if you can being a doctor ? May be you know bc your parents are doctors
@leenaa.9671
@leenaa.9671 6 лет назад
taehyung sure! You’re right, a doctor definitely has way less free time but that doesn’t mean you can’t start a family! It’s definitely possible you just have to be smart about your timing. I have to warn you, being a doctor takes years of studying so if you want to have a child before 26-28 it may not be the best choice. After that though, you can definitely take a maternity leave, book your schedule based on your children, etc. Pre schools and extended day programs at school are what my parents did to make sure we were supervised when we were younger. You could also get a nanny. There are many options so don’t stress! You can definitely be a doctor and have a family you just need to plan things out effectively. Hope this helped (ps good luck!!) 💘💘

i chose to wanting to be a Nurse instead of a doctor because i want to live and start my life earlier. some people may say it sounds crazy but i’m being 100%! doctors need 12 years of school and nurses need 4 and years of training. the second reason is because i feel like nurses are closer to their patients than doctors and i love it💓 i would love to be a NICU nurse...

Girl. We go through a lot of science classes (bio, chem, A&P, microbiology...) in college too. It’s literally a degree in science. It’s just not at the same capacity as doctors or people pursuing med school, obviously because we aren’t preparing to practice medicine. We learn the foundational science plus all the psychosocial “caring” stuff nurses are known and praised for. Many people think nurses are “just” nurses and that we “aren’t smart enough” to become doctors & that is not it. Personally there’s no way in hell I’d be cool with the doctor lifestyle of taking home my work, like you said. Work is work, it’s not my life 🤷🏼‍♀️
@cutepanda6807

Doctors take home their work?
@mariangely9546
@mariangely9546 6 лет назад
Cute Panda yes many doctors work from home remotely, being on call, taking calls from nurses and other hospital personnel. I’m sure they are able to check up on their patients from home. Some less than others. But hospitalists and internists stay busy, I’m sure, because they oversee so many patients and they’re ultimately the decision makers, they’re responsible for putting in orders. As a nurse I only take care of these patients for the duration of my shift. Once I’m home the patient is no longer my responsibility.

Anthony Marquez My dad used to be a Surgeon and my mom was a Nurse. My dad was always working, he rarely had any time to relax, he was extremely depressed about life. He was so depressed he got his own apartment to be alone from me and my mom. He was never happy because at work he would work, then at home he would review all his patient files and prepare for next days surgeries and consults and EVERYTHING. Having a second hand experience from both sides of the coin, I can honestly tell you man, I never want to be a doctor. So for me it's very simple, I just don't ever want to be a doctor, I've seen what it did to my father & that's not the life I want. Honestly bro, we chose the best profession we could have chosen. Here in Nigeria, some people even ask you "so, you will become a doctor after your degree?" And you have to start explaining how nursing is different from medicine. How they are two parallel lines. How our job descriptions are different. Then after you get over that, they ask you "so,why not go for medicine instead of nursing?" And thats where you start rolling your eyes and re-explain the whole process. Then they pray for you and say "God will promote you to be a doctor very soon" I just die

I think people are more so annoyed when people ask why did you become a nurse over a doctor in a way that makes it seem like being a nurse is inferior to being a doctor. Or when then ask it in a way that seems like you're just "settling" for nursing. Like some people will say "oh you're so smart, why don't you be a doctor instead?" It makes it seem as if nurses can't be smart.

Great video! In high school I decided that I wanted to become a doctor. I shadowed a pathologist and was sure that was what I wanted to do. Then I go off to college as a Biology major. It turns out that I loved some aspects of biology and hated the other. I hated chemistry and could not grasp the major concepts which I knew would have doomed me in Organic Chemistry which is a course all Med Schools require. I started shadowing and volunteering at a hospital in my college town and I slowly realized that I loved what nurses do. So here I am now waiting for my 2nd year of college to start as a pre nursing major. Hopefully I get in to nursing school. Keep up the great content!

Yeah. I’m a honors premed biomedical student and everything is narrowed down to what you are matched. Whereas the human cadavers, you have to be comfortable with it. However, the downside is being on call and knowing what orders/tests go into a patient. You can literally be on “vacation” and have to be back in a hospital settings when they need you. Doctors aren’t very one to one with patients, rather than being there for symptoms and discharge, but they put in the orders and deal more with paper work. Another downside is the number of math courses you have to take. It’s overwhelming because you have to balance out school, your personal life (e.i. kids, family, friends, bills), volunteer services (community, organizations, clinical), and school to get a “good enough” resume for medical school interviews. Not to mention is the massive student loan debt that accumulated interest.

My mother is a retired Nurse (worked for 43 years!). She practiced such a wide range of specialties (e.g. NICU, Geriatrics, Hospice, etc.)! I work with groups of OUTSTANDING Nurses and NPs. Here's a comment I put. Hope it can help: Just to speak for the "doctors don't interact with their patients a ton" remark, my mom (a GP) and a good friend (plastic surgeon) are doctors and they interact with their patients a lot. Even outside of my clinic, my mom does a lot of community events and provides homework help and workshops/events for the kids. My surgeon friend gets a lot of gifts from her patients, too. My mom also never takes work home. I haven't seen her do that in over a year, and even then she chooses to bring it home so she has less work tomorrow. I know there're lots of doctors who don't interact so much, but as someone in med school, I wanted to push that idea. For example, Natalie Crawford, MD is an infertility physician, mom and is soo involved in her patients lives. Dr. Rupa Wong, an ophthalmologist in Honolulu-the same. She owns her own practice, too and spends a good amount of time with her kids. The psychosocial aspect, I loved that you spoke about that. It's so true in many ways, though I feel I know doctors who implement that as well and if they don't, they feel they've failed as doctors. I love nurses, have nurse friends and seriously give my heart to the ones who helped me when I was in Canada

They'll write it in the patient's chart and then leave it to the nurses to transcribe it and send it to pharmacy and get the medication and administer the medication. Also some of their prescriptions can be vague, for example a lot of the standing orders that I've seen are just maintain O2 sats between 88-92 and then the nurse has to decide how to titrate the oxygen to maintain the patients O2 levels
@eagann92

Nikki Cordova Of course nurses do learn about those things, but there’s a reason why they aren’t allowed to prescribe medication and don’t have the same “privileges” as doctors.

Isn't it true that NP's have the ability to prescribe medications in some states? In middle and high school my primary care "doctor" was an NP. We did not know for a while until I spoke with her, which is how I found out about the profession.

So funny that you say your primary goal in life is to have a family. I just passed my NCLEX (yay!) And am working as a new nurse and I am so excited about where this career can take me.. but my number one goal in life is to be a good mom! I'm working hard to build a solid financial foundation so I can have kids and show them what it's like to work hard and be successful!

Hi! I’m almost done with my bachelor’s in psychology and I’ve really been starting to consider nursing as a career, and applying to an accelerated BSN program. I’ve been watching your videos and it’s been confirming a lot of my thoughts and feelings. Especially when you brought up the fact that your priority is going to be having a family so the strict shift schedule is important, that is exactly how I’ve been looking at my life. I just wanted to say thank you for all you’re doing, as a nurse and as a RU-vidr!

I was torn between proceeding to medicine after medtech as my premed or studying nursing all the way but my dream has always been to make a happy cohesive family. I was afraid being a doctor would take too much of my time at home but i still really admired the profession. Omw this video is so relatable. Firstly, thank you for your channel i totally love your videos. I'm a huge fan. I have also experienced the same criticisms from people. Like why are you going half way, nursing salary won't sustain and all that BS. So thank you for showing me I'm not the only one being faced with all this negativity. And honestly i agree about the Drs schedules, i wouldn't want to bring work home. I also want kids and that would just be too much work. And I love how nurses are the middle ground between pts and Drs. I'm a student nurse at the moment. At majority of the time, the pt or even the family family members don't know what they are diagnosed with or what the diagnosis means. I just love how i am able to make people be more at ease by explaining what the DRs are doing and why and i don't think I would want to be on the other side (being a doctor). So thank you. Ps. If you do become an NP, please make a video about the journey❤

Well, my mother is a nurse and I can tell that before I was born, when she already had my sister, my mother worked a lot, she did many night shifts and even now, after so many years, she does bring work home. My cousin is in med school (the last years) and I can vouche that she will have time for her family, since that is also one of her main goals in life. What I think is that the concepts of doctor and nurse are different but connected, and the most important, is that they can be somewhat different depending on the country. I'm from Portugal, and here, doctors have a pretty good life (not saying that they don't work hard, just that it is more flexible), having time for their work and family. But in the end, as I said, it depends on the country, and if you're happy about your choice that is all that matters.

Thanks for the video! It was true that going the Medical route took longer but I really think that is changing for the Nursing Profession. Now to become an Advanced Practice Nurse it requires a BSN, RN (4years of school), at least one-year of bedside training in that given specialty, and a DNP or Ph.d. (3-4 years of school) with board certification exams to practice. The average total is from 8-10 years of schooling and training or just as long as the Medical route! I think this is better for the Nursing Profession because it is requiring a higher level of educational attainment. You will be great!!!!

When I heard stories from doctors whose biggest regret was not being able to have enough face to face with patients, I knew that wouldn't be for me. Not to mention, if I was in the room with a patient who needed something that I couldn't help them with due to time constraints, it would kill me to delegate it off. Nurse is my route.

Briana Hanks Same with CRNA, CRNA school is just as expensive as Medical School if not more. And takes longer, you need to get your RN, then work in the ICU for a few years then apply for CRNA school and do that for 3 years
@brianahanks9531
@brianahanks9531 6 лет назад
femalesneakercollector CRNA school is not as expensive as medical school. At least for in state tuition. The school I want to attend is 60,000 for the entire length of the program. To get your bsn is 4 years at the school I want to attend and 1year of nursing practice and then 3 years to complete the crna program. When finished you can be 26. But another school I'm looking at requires you to get your rn(2yrs) and then you can go straight into their crna program(3 yrs) so roughly 23 years old and the cost of all that is about 60-80k for the all 5 years
@femalesneakercollector7201
@femalesneakercollector7201 6 лет назад
I work in a OR and have many friends that are CRNAs, most of them did more than one year ICU,because the program schools look for that. Also you are in training for a while, half your first year your still in training, and at least where I work, their on probation. Maybe your state cheaper, but I live in NY and CRNA school is expensive, and their are medical schools that are cheaper. Also, life changes out of high school. SO MUCH. For some students they get to live the full college life, other students end up working full time and school time, you learn and grow with college, and not everything works out they way you wanted too. Shaowding can help you decide if you actually want to do it, some people become nurses or doctors step into the field/OR for the first time and realize its not for them. You see a lot, something never leave you, even shaowding/volunteering might make it seem cool and all, till you see your first code. Your young, not even in college yet, but what do I know

I don’t normally comment on videos but I had to on this one for two reasons. One, I graduated with a BS in Biology knowing I wanted to be in the healthcare field but not sure about what I wanted to do exactly. I considered nursing, PA, Pharmacy, Dentistry, Dental Hygiene everything. I ended up choosing dental hygiene but before then I often thought about RDH vs DDS and what each would mean for my life so. It’s interesting to see the perspective of RN vs. MD and the similarities between my thought processes. Two. Reading the comments got me a little upset. Because it’s like some people needed it to be a competition. Like they were taking it out on you about “medicine being harder” so what. People have to do what they were meant to do. All parties are educated and doing good things for people, it’s not a competition. Also. She blatantly said doctors work harder. She said “doctors take their work home” and she doesn’t want to do that. I’m happy she chose a career that fits her why is everybody so mad. It’s not a competition. Nobody is better than anybody we are all working people. Everybody is blessed to be doing what they love, despite your level of education within the healthcare field.

D L hmmm I got my degree in biology first then went into DH. If that answers your question. But not everyone does it that way, in fact most of my classmates were pre-dental hygiene majors at their schools before entering the program.

Kellye Hansberry how long did it take you to finish DH? But it make Sense because I go to a community college that offers a two year DH program but when your done with that you only get your associates in applied science, I want a whole bachelor degree though

D L ahhh I understand. My program was two years, but it honestly depends on your location. I would look up schools you’re interested in and contact them concerning what they are looking for. In my experience it all came down to prerequisite courses. Luckily, in my studies I had already had the courses they required in order to be eligible for application. The same may be true for you, but to be sure get on websites and definitely reach out that way you know exactly what you’re working towards. Maybe if you have any outlying courses you can find them at your college or a local university and be taking them along with your classes for your associates.
