I loved it. It's my favorite piece of the pie. I was happy that Lynch and Frost seemed eager to acknowledge that you can't ever really go back - that the story will evolve no matter what. Art imitates life, after all. And the special effects didn't bother me, either; the Impressionists got away with similar ideas. I do understand what you missed about the original run. It was campy and warm in a way that made it stand out from everything else that was programmed in the 90s. That quirkiness didn't carry into the film or the Return. But the Return really works for me, odd special effects notwithstanding.

@@eastriverg3595Not a problem. I’m looking for more recent tales on the show, now that people had seven years to watch/digest it.

I agree with a lot of this. It was cheap, low brow, and drawn out. Parts of it were cool, a couple moments were great. Most of it was lame and boring and ugly. Hard disagree about Inland empire. I think it actually looks beautiful in a very unique way. Some of it is hideous but that’s part of the story. Such an incredible movie.

I don't remember what I said about Inland Empire, but I do really enjoy that film's zaniness. I think what I don't like about it is the fact that Lynch had a tremendous eye for great cinematography and a filmic look, in films such as Blue Velvet or Fire Walk With Me, and what I like about that is just absent in Inland Empire! Thank you for watching.

I totally understand where you are coming from. I appreciated it and was grateful for it (as a TP fan who watched it almost when it aired and then really loved the movie). To me personally it was a classic "artist set free" syndrome. So many times we hear artists (of all kinds) complain about the industry pressure: the "dumb record label bosses", the "annoying editors who don't get it", the "network idiot executives who want clarity and format" etc. When I was much younger I used to think "oh, if only they just gave so-and-so all the money and just let them do whatever!.." And then I saw it happen - with quite a few musicians, some writers, and some filmmakers. And the result wasn't what I had expected. A lot of bad records, weird meandering stories, all over the place bizarre films taking one nowhere, the disconnect with the fans. I am not saying what happened here is e x a c t l y that. Not quite. Is it a fascinating piece of full-on-Lynch visual and at times performing art? Yes! Is it that promised "return to Twin Peaks"? No - not for me, anyway. I think many people, even without being fans of the original two seasons, would say that something that stands out is the Atmosphere. The location, the music, the characters, the rhythm. The actual mythical town of TP is half (or more) of the magic. Missing here. And one more final thought. Back in its ABC airing days, with the network's pressure and "supervision" of the show, as offbeat and otherworldly lynchesque as it was, had to be rooted in at least some narrative logic, some semblance of verisimilitude, some recognizable genre framework - as blurred as it was. Without that "control" (using this word loosely) it's not TP for me. It is a fantastic David Lynch 18 hour long surrealistic installation loosely based on some characters and themes of Twin Peaks. I value and applaud it as such, but... for me the Red Curtain fell in 1992. Sorry for the wordy comment. But I could really relate to your comment.

I like your video, tho I absolutely love the Return! Have you seen Twin Perfects video on the show? It's a pretty ambitious interpretation, and he might be dead wrong, but I suspect he's pretty close on a lot of points. Either way, I'm excited to rewatch the show with something new to think about.

I'm fine with you not liking it btw, I don't want to change your mind at all! It's funny you mentioning a lack of charm in series 3, because I thought it was extremely charming at points, but maybe it lacked the overarching charm of 1 and 2. I will agree that it took time to get started. I didn't really feel settled in this new world until about episode 7 I think, so nearly half way through. That is sloooow, so I can readily accept other opinions!

I didn't like Twin Peaks season 3 either, my guy. I got maybe 8 episodes in, and I was extremely bored by it. The OG series is a phenomenal piece of TV fiction, with vibrant characters with vast and interesting personalities. The Return for me felt like a muted, more vanilla adventure, with those same characters, however; those characters that I loved previously were just pale, lifeless imitations of those OG characters that I had come to love. If anyone else loves this show... good for them, but I just can't understand it myself. I wish that I could see what you all see in it.

Anytime someone says they don't like this show, one of the go-to responses from Lynch fans are "Go watch a Marvel movie." Basically meaning anybody who dislikes the show, or even has mild criticisms about it, are automatically labeled stupid popcorn munching mouth breathers who only like superhero movies.

I wasn’t expecting this, but I wasn’t expecting the same show all over again. After Fire Walk With Me, and especially after Secret History, I saw the cat was out of the bag and there was no going back. Once all the supernatural stuff came to the surface, and Secret History tracing all the evils in the world to wood from Twin Peaks getting exported across the country, I was fine with the show evolving into what it became. That’s just my tastes, as I’m a fan of things starting off grounded, then turning into something batshit by the time it’s at the finish line.

To be honest, every single thing Lynch has ever done, I get that "OH, I know a lot of people are not going to like this" feeling. Maybe not for The Straight Story.

I loved this series. I'd rate it as perhaps the best TV programming ever produced. When the series starts it does feel extremely distant from the twin peaks of season 1 and 2, and that's a high barrier to entry. But as the series progresses I felt that the rationale behind it became clearer, and it became more and more "twin peaks" (in spirit if not location). I liked Dougie and evil Coop, and I was rooting for the real Cooper to make his way back to the real world. I don't think the old style twin peaks would have made sense in 2017, and this felt "right" to me, as a way of bringing back the world. I hope they don't make another series. The circle is complete for me, and although the ending was filled with mystery, I'm happy to be in the dark. I don't want more explanations. I'll watch your explanation now, but before I do, I'll say that for me this series was the culmination of David Lynch's art. It all came together perfectly, and it was a good mix of super-dark, and a good sprinkling of light. I'm gonna have to watch the series again now 😆 I've lost count, but this might be watch number five?!

Thank you for your comment; I very much appreciate it. I basically feel the same as you; I am not sure if that came across in this video. I really feel like as out-there as David Lynch is, he is one of the few working directors today that still "gets it", so, having this TV as an output from him, it's absolutely incredible; we're not going to get anything like this for a very long time (paralleling the original release in 1990). I guess I would agree that the original style wouldn't work quite as well too; they had to bring this into the modern times to make sense. But still....something is missing, and that's my qualm with it overall. I am overall satisfied with the way it ended, and I don't think a Season 4 would be a good idea, either. I think that would likely only compound my issues with the show. I think I've seen the original run 15 times, now!

@@eastriverg3595 Oh for sure, your reasoning stands up fine. It's just an opinion. I never really noticed that the cinematography/visuals weren't good, so I'll pay attention to that on the next watch. The special effects were done on a budget, but I never really noticed anything egregious. Actually I do understand your gripes with the visuals, but I just took it as "it is what it is", it's out there, and it's "Lynch" on style. I guess the ideas and concepts had more impact on me than the quality of the special effects. For example, the spirits fixing evil Coop after he was shot, the woodman (was that his name?) murdering people, the house with the stairway leading to the room. The time when Gordon Cole nearly got pulled into the other dimension (swirling sky) - the whole concept is just so intriguing to me, as is so much of season 3. There's even the bittersweet aspect that the log lady actually passed away during production, which made her scenes quite poignant. Can you tell I'm a fan of season 3? 😂😂

Hello random youtube video that just appeared in my recommendations. Your issue is you went into it with certain expectations. Twin peaks has been highly subversive for the get go and different people had different tolerances for how far they were willing to let it go. For some people in the original series even the spares surrealism was too much for them. Others jumped ship during fire walk with me when Lynch fully shifted focus away from answering questions and further expanded on the world while also going even further into surrealism, horror and sexual content. The Return is no different. Many old fans didnt like the change in tone, setting and lack of focus on Cooper. I think The Return is masterful in nearly every respect. Its highly ambitious and Lynch certainly did not have the budget to fully capture his vision but what he did gets the point across which is much more important than having fancy CGI. Its profound, highly subversive, funny, and an incredible and personal piece of work. Most issues people have with it stem from an over attachment and nostalgia towards the characters. I dont see this as serious criticism. Twin Peaks is much more about themes than it is plot. Id ask you to consider with Audrey for example, what Lynch is trying to convey with her character rather than if you found his choices regarding her personally satisfactory to the Audrey that you cherished from the original series.

This is an anti-argument. This is basically Lynch fans excusing any and all flaws, and blaming it on the audience. If someone has a criticism, it's because they were in the wrong because they were coming at it with an expectation that wasn't warranted. The fact is this is a show that is selling itself as a sequel to Twin Peaks, yet really doesn't feel anything like the original show besides its name and some characters. So it's perfectly reasonable and justified for people to come into a show that has been off television for decades, to expect to have some sort of satisfying payoff to certain storylines, or characters. And it's perfectly reasonable and justified for them to feel disappointed or unsatisfied from the show when a lot of the characters that came back were wasted, and a lot of the new characters weren't all that interesting. Also it's extremely boring to most people who aren't Lynch fanatics. And whatever Lynch is trying to convey, does not necessarily mean that it was a good decision or decision that can't be criticized. To set up that Mr C and Audrey had a son, and have that storyline go absolutely nowhere, but spend a significant amount of time on it, regardless of what Lynch was trying to convey; doesn't make for entertaining television. And can leave a lot of people, myself included frustrated with watching the show. If Lynch did not want us to go in to the show with any expectations, then it was pointless to name this Twin Peaks the return. To me this felt like he had contempt for his audience, and basically just wanted to troll them. It's a very self-indulgent experience. Lots of extremely pretentious scenes/shots that go on for way too long and feel like they're there just to fill up time. A plot that moves at a ridiculously slow pace and often has long stretches where nothing interesting happens or gets developed. But again it's pointless for me to even point out these flaws, because I'm sure this was a part of David Lynch's master plan, despite the fact that he's often said that he doesn't even know the meaning of a lot of his work. It's almost like he isn't immune to criticism, and is a known pretentious art house director.

@@blueshades_mu I sincerely appreciate you taking the time to write such a detailed comment; I really respect that. You bring up some excellent points, and I do agree wholeheartedly that Lynch is a director that is more concerned with tone than plot; it's one of the reasons I was initially drawn to him. With that being said, art is subjective, and I still feel the way I feel about the Return. Thank you for watching! Cheers.
