I know 2 Brits who returned to the UK to get treated by the NHS. They just had to declare they were returning to the UK permanently. One guy had no money so they gave him a council house. I think Kev does not want to leave Thailand, which is understandable.

Kev that's not 100% correct I lived in spain and gibraltar for 20 years flew back to the uk went to the hospital they asked for my name and medical number they found me on the system and that was it I was seen straight away....I had not used a doctor or hospital for 20 years in the uk.....but never had any problems there. Dont believe everything you hear or read.

@@TheYosserman And I know lots that have not got treatment without qualifying period, although living in Spain I have had treatment when holidaying and also until recently getting flu jab and blood pressure test offers, even though signing off fro the NHS. So it is not black and white. I have a friend who can't get a hip replacement on the NHS.

A lot of what your saying about the UK is misinformed. The NHS will treat anybody regardless of their status, although under funded and abused by many free loaders it is still one of the best health services out there. Keep strong Kev and wishing you all the best.

No explanation needed really, this is your home and if you're sick you need to be home. When we move to Thailand, it's not on a whim, it's a change of life. We have to take the good with the bad and maybe that means doing some things differently. But we choose to make this our home and accept the challenges that presents. Keep fighting Kev 👍🍺

I dont think the 6 months out of the UK thing is true. I'm an expat living in Dubai and I go back to the UK for 2 months every year. I always go to the doctors and use the NHS. They dont question me about it. They said as long as I'm registered to an address in the UK it's fine.

If you want to live or retire abroad make sure you have a registered address in the UK where your mail can be sent and come back to the UK at least once a year. My advice buy the cheapest one bed flat you can find, better a bed sit but both must have a recognised postal address.

And, with the cost of living on most of the West Coast of the U.S. now on a par with London and the most expensive cities in the world, (Try $1300/mo for a flat) and set to get even more expensive, there are millions nearing or in retirement in a real crisis situation in terms basic needs like healthcare and shelter and faced with living in a vehicle, on the street or moving out of the U.S.

Health insurance for a guy his age would of been about 25k per year before his illness. Might be a lot more after his recovery and it might no cover any further cancer treatments. If you watch his other videos you will hear that he was planning on buying health insurance, unfortunately he got sick just before he bought it. This was a very interesting topic regarding the NHS and ex-pats returning for health care. The American Medicare rules for people abroad seem to be quite different. Medicare Part A and Part B and Part D do not cover foreign medical expenses. But as long as the ex-pat was eligible for and signed up for Medicare and paid the premiums, whether within the U.S. or abroad, there doesn't seem to be a restriction on traveling back to the U.S. for medical care under the program. The Supplemental coverage also seems to work the same way, keep paying the premiums, they don't care where the subscriber lives, but services are only covered within the U.S. Supplemental Plan F is very good, it covers all co-pays, co-insurance, and deductibles, plus covers extended hospital stays.

Glad to see you feeling better Kev. I get the not wanting to go back to UK 100%, its getting worse. Unfortunately I'm going to be snookered soon when I come to renew my Non O visa. Whatever way I do it, I cannot get insurance less than £2000. The new Thai insurers will not insure me as I'm over a certain BMI, not thai midget size. European insurers will insure but nothing covered as just about everything comes under pre existing conditions, & they still want £2000 for what would basically be accident insurance. I'm sick of people who give advice who think they are covered, when if You drill down a few questions, their totally NOT, but I'm sick of pissing on people's chips. So my advice is don't believe for 1 second an insurer will not try to wriggle out of coughing up & even if you've visited a GP before you travel, ensure you disclose everything because they check everything. Even though I can pay for reasonable health care self funding, it's not enough under new rules. They need to look again, I would even be prepared to pay monthly contributions but of course that's not an option. Best of luck in the future Kev, I'll try to share a beer with you next time I'm in Pattaya & hope that good man rob is around as I'd like to buy him a drink too.👍🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Saw on another UK vlogers channel that UK national heath will only treat for free an expat that has been out of the country for a while if he/she can prove that they are back in the country to stay for good. The key words being "resident" rather than "citizen". Also seem to recall the requirement to be back in the country for 6 months. but not sure on that one. I know Aussies are good for 5 years out of the country before Medicare abandons them.

I was back in the UK in May of this year, I had to pay a visit to my GP with my ongoing medical condition. I was made to feel most unwelcome because they probably knew that I just came back to the UK to use the NHS etc? I worked all my life in the UK, served my country, paid all my taxes -still paying taxes on my pensions etc. I've now decided to return back to Thailand, avoid the no entitlement to NHS etc. God bless you and get well soon

So glad to see your happy smiling face again glad you are on the mend. You were talking about Benifits. I have just received a letter from State Pensions , as from next April 2020 all Dependency Benifits will be stopping so I cannot claim for my wife anymore after paying in for 44 years. So as far as I am concerned I am disgusted about what is happening to a once great country. Please stay your old self and keep smiling as we are still much better off living in Thailand.

Makes me laugh when people say the NHS is free, it`s not, you contribute to it all your life and then when you leave the UK they take it off you. The only ones it`s free for are those that come to the UK having never paid into the system, go figure. Same with the state pension, frozen at the point it`s first claimed if you are in Thailand, not so in Spain etc So you are punished for your choices in retirement whilst others aren`t. All the best Kev.

It's free if you're a dolite scrounger who never made any contributions then they can live off the back of the taxpayer

Good to see you on the mend! Exchange rates are crazy! I can remember them drop to 60 then 50, and people saying they won’t drop below 50 and will shoot back up! Low and behold 38 baht to 1 gbp!! 😳

Thanks for making me think...I am moving to the Philippines, probably for the rest of my life..I will certainly check Medicare rules in America..I will always have my banking and a address here in USA..if I was a Englishman I would certainly return once or twice a year to keep my health insurance for sure..I am a cancer survivor and been in remission for many years from malignant melanoma cancer..I plan on getting a complete check up once or twice a year including blood tests and x Ray's..I have checked and it's not expensive at all.. first sigh of any health problems and I will be on the next plane back to USA..no matter how careful we plan we are always going to come across the unknown scenario we could not plan for..I been cancer free for over six years but I never know what tomorrow brings..I plan on visiting Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. I will try and look you up and buy you lunch if you like..I hope and pray that everything turns out ok for you and keep on keepin on and watch your six..

Sad to say the USA will not extend medicare out of the US. If you are able , you can return to the USA and get back on medicare. But you will receive your social security, no problem. Buying a Thai health plan is the best.

Ive been told by guys that have gone back for treatment that as long as you are still registered at a UK doctor surgery and have a postal address its all good. Also if you do go back and assume normal residence in the UK,NHS is automatically restored.

100% correct know a few UK expats who have gone back to the UK for NHS treatment with no issues
@williamcoyle4022

@Lee Adams - I don't want to argue with KEV and you are correct but, in some NHS areas within the UK once you are out of the UK for more than three months, you can be de-registered by your doctor despite the fact that you have a permanent address in the UK. If you are de-registered from a doctors practice, it is illegal for a doctor to proscribe any medication. All they can do is refer you to your local hospital for treatment. Failing that, you will be able to go to any hospital in the UK without a doctor's referral, with your passport and receive free treatment there. Provision is also made for inclusion on an "Emergency Patient Treatment" list, especially for cancer patient treatment. At the back of your registration card, if you have been issued with one it states, "Please return this card to the address above if you are leaving the UK for more than three months or hand it to an Immigration Officer on departure". This plastic Medical Card replaced the old paper National Health Card which shows your National Insurance number. You do not loose any benefits including state pension rights if you have fully contributed to the National Insurance Scheme at the time of your retirement. If you return to the UK and have a permanent address there, you are entitled by law to medical treatment as a UK citizen and to re-register with a doctor of your choice, always assuming of course that the practice will take you on their books in the area you live in.

Australia is similar but without private health insurance you would waste time just to see a specialist doctor which could be week or months then waiting for the surgery at a hospital could be even longer. Like you said Kev time is the essence and nice to see you getting better.

Looking and sounding good Kev! Yes you're right about being screwed by the UK.No NHS cover despite having paid in most if our lives and our pensions frozen. Yet the bloidu politicians vote themselves above Inflation lag rises every year and claim 100's of thousands in expenses. Not to mention the backhanders for making life easy for the rich and multinational companies. It makes me want to puke! Rant over! Take care mate and continue getting stronger!
