Why I Don’t Like Bobtailed 1911s
This isn’t a decision I came to lightly. Or very quickly. It took me a few years and lots of shooting experience with a timer to figure this out.
I’ve verified it visually and objectively in the clock.
Your individual experience may vary. But when given the choice, I will take a full-size 1911 grip over anything that’s been modified, shortened, bobbed or chopped.
As for value, in my opinion any 1911 with a bobtail is worth less money than one without.
Sincerely,
Marky

This isn’t a slam on the bobtail. It’s just personal preference after many years of playing with them. I’ve literally had over $10,000 in bobtailed 1911s through the years. Regards, Marky

I have a bobtail Dan wesson. Beautiful gun. 1st time i shot it the rear sights slid out. It is more concealable though. Especially if yer smaller.

Fair. But my experience is holster selection makes way more difference on conceal ability than the bobtail. 1911’s are so thin, it’s a pretty easy gun to carry. Regards, Marky

Good points. I like the traditional for having magwells on them. The bobtail depending on the person's build, hand size, preferences etc, in my opinion, as long as it's the commander size, is good for AIWB and may aid smaller handed shooters. However the negative like you said is reloading if you have the flat base plate, I've pinched my hand numerous times. I agree a full size 1911 with a bobtail makes no sense.

Have been on the fence about this for a while. I definitely notice the lack of a full grip on a contour frame compared to a flat mainspring housing with or without a magwell. My biggest inclination towards the bobtail design was to have something different and more comfortable for conceal carry since it was going to be purpose built for it on a 4 inch commander variant. Now I am not so sure this is the way anymore. Thanks for the video.

Bobtails seem to find purchase with hands who don’t optimally fit a 1911 grip. It offers zero benefit from a comfort or concealability standpoint. It’s more of a cosmetic option for those who want to spend more than functional. Glad you liked the video. -Marky

What’s your opinion on the smaller bobs like the ones Wilson combat does? I think they look cool, and don’t seem to have the downsides like with the full bobs.
@John1911

If you are referring to the “rounded butt”, I think that’s fine and doesn’t preclude a magwell. To my mind, a true bobtail precludes a magwell. Anything that precludes a magwell is a major party foul in my book. Regards, Marky

There are only 2 "Bobtail 111's still being made in 2923 that I'm aware of. the Ed Brown Kobra Carry and a Commander side version of the SIG P226 Emperor Scorpion. I don't htink they're selling any more or there would be tons of Bobtail 1911's by all gun companies. Never shot one but....stands to reason...if you're missing a little of the grip at the heel you're loosing leverage...it wil "wobble" as you mentioned and possibly kick up and maybe add more muzzle rise?? ....depending on your hand size (I wear a size L glove)....\ I think the idea of "Bobtails" was a trendy idea created to help sell more guns. Just like the RDS, laer grips....etc. For the guys that like to GUcci-up their guns to look "tacti-cool" at the range....to look like an OP.... And yes...I do think adding a "mag-well" is a good thing. Nothing ridiculous as what you see on race guns but a functional "mag well" nonetheless e.g. Dan Wesson Specialist (one of the best gun designs IMHO...outside and IN ...heh....forged parts...etc. no RDS mounts....(dont need them unless for "shooting sports e.g)....

Don’t worry so much about it. It’s one video on the internet. I’m sure you’ll love it. Gun fitment can be as personal as shoe or pants size. Like I said in the video, I’ve had multiple examples of the bobtail. It probably took me a decade of shooting, and watching sights under recoil, to develop my feelings about it. Unlike gun forums that always want to take sides on an issue, in real life two things can be true at the same time. I like Ed Brown Products. I actually know Ed Brown and some of the family personally. I think it was a neat idea and Ed made a pretty penny on it. Good for everyone involved. Again…I’ve owned at least 3 or 4 of these bobbed guns FROM ED. But as I progressed in my shooting career, my priorities changed. And I had ZERO problems getting these bobbed guns to flourish elsewhere. Glad you liked the video. Regards, Marky

Absolutely all reasons are subjective and none of them are true. 1. You have to change your grip and you actually have more real estate on your firearm with a bobtail unless you have skinny hands. (its not on the end the advantage, its in the middle of the back part of the grip with the safety) Your hand can come closer to the firearm and have less "leverage" as you say and more grip. (This is the whole reason behind bobtailing in the first place). 2. When you are changing the magazine, when it counts, while replacing a magazine your hand meat is in the way and softer and more flexible than a regular 1911 (much easier to do so in the dark or with low visibility because its closer to your other hand) 3.Concealing is less noticeable. You will notice a regular 1911 before you notice a bobtail (if you carry the whole grip out or half the gun out of your belt or pants then you are not concealing properly and the edge bothers when you bend over and move around also) 4. 1911s that are collectable are not bobtail because they are old or stick to the original design. There are reasons for its existence apart from appearance. If you don't like it because you are traditionalist, then that is your loss. The fact that you don't have one at the moment shows that you couldn't overcome your negative bias to actually experience that it is better. I would pick a regular 1911 only if it had more value, if they are both the same, then bobtail is better. Modifying a regular 1911 would only be justified if the firearm will have no added value or there is no bobtail option for what you can afford...

Fair enough. I did forget one data point when making the video and this covers you: If you wake up every day and think the sun rises and sets with a bobtail cut? Then rock on with it. However….if after some time a person finds themselves feeling more and more ambiguous about his / her bobbed pistol? These are the reasons why. I'm glad Ed came up with the idea and made a few bucks. But my prediction still stands: on balance, over time, across the entire 1911 consumer base; the bobtail cut will hurt residual value. Not help it. Regards, Marky

@John1911
@John1911 3 года назад
It gets even more META. You saw the title of the video, and yet, you still watched it. Just to tell me you don’t prefer the genre. 🤷🏼‍♂️ But that’s ok. And I will do you the courtesy of answering your rhetorical question: At the gun counter, it’s quite common for guns with doodads and features to cost more. Typically a bob on a 1911 is a $200 up charge. Without knowledge and experience, many folks will think more money is “more-better”. So this video attempts to educate viewers who haven’t spent over $30,000 on 1911s. Happy thanksgiving. Regards, Marky

Yeah but you don’t want the gun to print though a bobtail is definitely different than a full size grip it would definitely be better for concealed carry but Dan Wesson is one of the best 1911 brands out there and they were originally famous for making Riva but you probably didn’t know that by being made out of all steel compared to injected into a mold yes you’re gonna pay more but it’s gonna be a lot more accurate and a lot more reliable
@John1911
@John1911 Год назад
Eric, I am having a hard time following your comment. I will assume it’s full of typos and not a logical fallacy. So here goes: 1. I am very familiar with Dan Wesson going back to their revolver days. I have owned one of their “pistol packs”. 2. Dan Wesson is a fine 1911 brand. Much better than many of the other production level guns. It used to be back in the day they were full of Ed Brown parts but without all of the custom 1911 prices. Over time that value proposition has somewhat diminished with DW’s prices getting ever higher & higher. 3. Single stack 1911s are easily concealable by virtue of how thin they are. The Ed Brown Bobtail is a neat idea in a time when 1911s were just about maxed out on new ideas. But the real world application of the bobtail being more concealable under a garment is typically demonstrated through creating an unrealistic scenario. If you like them, rock on. But personally I think in the long term they will detract from a gun’s value. 4. How a MSH cut is making a 1911 more accurate or reliable is lost on me. Regards, Marky
@AGC828
@AGC828 3 года назад
Could it be you're either gripping the gun too hard or not hard enough? The force of the recoil/muzzle rize should be focused in the V of our hands in line with our index finger. Also, as for missing the mag-well...that might be inevitable. but rare. It should be in our muscle memory. Just like a piano player after a short time won't be looking at where each key is to play. We KNOW where all the keys are by FEEL. We're looking at the music sheets or talking to someone. Eyes not focused on the keyboard.
@John1911
@John1911 3 года назад
Anderson, I see a glaring logical fallacy in your supposition about gripping too hard or not enough. Not whacking you, just hear me out. Let's assume for the sake of argument we both know how to shoot guns. We both know the theories and approaches and different schools of thought. We also both know the peccadillos of hand size and grip unique to different shooters. In short, you and I are clones. Same-same. Now for the logical question back to you: If a bobtail could introduce the variable you suggest? Gripping too hard or too soft? Why even go there with the bob? Why even introduce the modification? Why…make a grip that has to be "just right" to be optimal? Food for thought, nothing more. The same logical question applies to the magwell idea. Probably more so. Glad you liked the video.
