Took me one year. I was an unloader and now a full time ups driver. Hard work and some long days but the pay and benefits are truly insane and it can get better with new union contracts.
@@Hollywoodintx It's something that you have to love doing because after 10 plus years your body will probably be in pain. I used to be a supervisor and I have seen some drivers that where doing it for 20 plus years that couldn't walk straight.
This week I hit 9 months as an unloader on the early AM shift. My name goes on the transfer list to become a driver on Tuesday. From there it should only be 1-3 months until I transfer up to drive. It took me about 2 full months to get physically used to unloading, and now that I’m efficient at it I actually love it. I would never unload for more than 2 years. It’s too physically demanding for so little pay, but the health insurance benefits are amazing
I am a 30 year UPS employee. I’ve been a driver for 23 years. I was hired in 1993 part-time making $8/hr. It took 7 years for me to get a driving position. We are Teamsters at UPS so moving up is always based on seniority. Back then it took a long time to move up high enough to get a drivers job. After the strike in 1997 UPS had to create full-time jobs and then the list to become a driver started to move a lot faster. UPS is a very demanding company to work for, both physically and mentally but it is well worth it. Currently our top rate is $41.54/hr and that goes up every August 1st. We pay nothing for our healthcare and have a really good pension. You’ll hear UPS drivers complain a lot but in the end UPS has given me a great life and I consider myself very fortunate to have spent the last 30 years wearing brown.
I started in 2015. I went driving within 9 months and im now topped out at $42. Its hard work no doubt but the pay and amazing benefits make everything worth it. Ive had many jobs in my life and you will always have bad management or co workers wherever you go. But if you just show up and do your part and don't engage in anyone else's business it makes it all manageable.
@@RobertoHernandez-lp7os because I’m about to move to Texas in a couple of weeks bro and I’m trying to find something to stick with lol. And ppl tell me that ups is a good career
@@RobertoHernandez-lp7os not yet bro. It’s no openings but I check everyday. But in the mean time I talked with a contractor from fedex and that’s what I’m going to do in the mean time. Unless I find something different and just wait until ups is available
Go back to ups, u seem like an awesome guy, Christmas time is best time to get in where ups hires off the street drivers and you can get yourself in with management. This is where you can truly show your motivation for the job. Pleasant attitude under pressure, studying the 1 area and knowing it well that they keep you in during Christmas, and calling center immediately on route when done willing to help fellow drivers finish up. I made $127k this year, pay nothing for medical, dental, glasses, and hearing coverage for me and my immediate family Driver for 29 years with company 36yrs. I’ve trained over 150 drivers in Illinois, go back to ups, do not give up, ups needs you
I'm about to become tcd and they told me to study the 5s and 10s I'm a little nervous I can't really memorize this is that on a test I'm hoping to do good any advice I'm going to driver class on Wednesday

UPS does hire people off the street to become drivers. I started as a package handler and worked that for about 5 months and after that I became a driver. Started my 30 day probation right in the first week of peak so it was tough and I got lucky because some drivers had to wait a year to start driving. Here in CA top pay is 40 and at first it was tough the cradle on my training package car didn’t work so I had no gps. I had to learn the streets on my own but it’s a great career to get into. I’m considered a part time 22.4 driver but work full time hours I probably won’t be a full time driver until the veteran drivers retire but there’s couple more drivers ahead of me
Man that’s awesome! Your right there!! Sometimes I regret leaving ups when I was 18 I just wasn’t thinking of it as a career and I was in college at the time so unfortunately I quit ……big L for me lol
I think every 4 or 5th person that moves from package handler to driver they will hire one person off the street to drive we’ve got a few that has never worked as a package handler
@@JeffRogers99 you can always run the route on your days off thats what I did. Also in my center we print out maps of and has were all of our stops are at. Not that hard

@@jwillwt2323 any job with high paying is always going to take alot from your life.. but honestly you can still spend time with your family on your days off or when the company has it's slow season. You'll be home before 5 if anything.
I came in off the street for UPS. I’m just south of Chicago. I was lucky. I came in as a combo driver but and am regular package car driver now. We work our asses off so we all deserve to be paid well. Be safe out there 🤙🏼
Hired as a seasonal driver in 2016, got called back for a full time RCPD in 2017, topped out last year. Now have great pay, pension, and health insurance for me and my family that doesn’t cost any thing out of my check
When I applied I went In as a driver, never had to be a handler, I denied their offer in the end, too military for my liking. I work fedex express now.
I recently had the opportunity to be a driver but I couldn't take the heat. My nerves were absolutely shot and had a mental breakdown on one of the last days of their driver training program. I was big time panicking and self-disqualified myself and have to wait two years if I want to try again. I still have my inside part-time job there but I don't know if I want to try that again. The money and benefits are great but you gotta have nerves of steel to withstand the pressure and expectations they put on you.
Sorry to hear that! I Heard it’s like Boot Camp at the training place. I only worked there less than a year and the supervisor I had at the time was just not friendly to me. ultimately made the decision to leave.
I watch your videos to see what my life could have been… I wanted to something active for a job and made a list of potential careers. Delivery driver was on that list. I chose tree trimmer instead. Five years later I’m billing at $100 an hour as a self-employed tree trimmer. If I chose delivery driver, I would have been unable to start my own business with a solid skill. It would have been so awful
😂 nobodies paying $100 an hour for tree trimming when I can pay Miguel from the home depot parking lot $50 to do it. Clown. And enjoy covering your own health and dental cost for you and your family. You forgot to factor in the free healthcare.
Great story man, you got it going good for yourself. I’m a UPS driver in Fresno Ca, been employed for 23 years. It took me 5 years to be pulled up into driving. We have a union and everything’s based on seniority. They do allow 1 out of every 5 drivers to be pulled in from the street, but it’s rare. UPS and Fed Ex still the big boys on the block
Yup!!! kinda cool how they can pull 1 person from the streets. I heard before here at express it was kinda the same but ever since COVID, they hire anybody lmao 🤣
I was a package handler for a year , I had to leave due to some financial struggles, I was gone a month . Now I re applied for seasonal driver with chance for driving position. Now the thing about the union is if you reach out to them they will bat for you , I thought I was screwed with my seniority but if they keep me fingers crossed 🤞 I get my seniority back .
Congrats on your 23 years. I’ve been with UPS for 30 years, 23 as a driver in Philly. Getting ready to retire this summer. Still not sure if want to though. Im so used to running around all day in that truck that I don’t think I’d know what to do with myself not being in that truck all day
It took me 2 years from package Handler to cover driver and one more year from cover driver to full time driver in ups, it is a long wait but still good I started 33/hr and my top pay in 4 years will be 41 or 42 dollars and hour 👍👍also benefits are great. Ups is a great company because the union
Started as a seasonal driver with no guarantee they even said they haven’t kept a seasonal the last 2 years I worked my ass of and impressed well enough about 2 weeks after seasonal ended got a call from the building offering me a permanent driver position and never did a day in the warehouse.
Yeah in 2020 ups was hiring for summer help drivers, sounded like a nightmare to get a full time driver position. I had just applied again and it sounds like they are hiring drivers right off the bat. Which is insane!
Based on the stories I hear, there are definitely different experiences at UPS. My personal experience seems to be going good so far knock on wood, but the wrong supervisor or wrong crew can be a super drag man.
Its for every 6 union employees 1 employee can be hired off the streets..we have several from the street but they have no seniority a few drove before me but i got flipped to 300 before them..our top pay is literally life changing..also i constantly see fed ex guys running for their life on my route..ive been to prison..mom died..and homeless..UPS CHANGED MY LIFE!!
@@luigui707 a person that works in the building is a union employee person who does not work for the company at all applying for a driver position is applying from the streets so this is just an example a union employee will take maybe 2 years to be a driver where a person who applied from the streets will probably take five to six years because they only go to one of those applications after every six Union employees are offered the position
@@madnessblood92ifg ok so like for myself I want to be a package car driver. I also want to be part of the union. Would I apply at UPS or apply at the union? Or both?

i work at canada post and drive my own vehicle and own my route, get paid salary so if i finish my route in 4 hrs i get paid the same if it took me 10 hrs but peak season and if you're new to a route are the only times you'll work more than 7 hrs
I always had a feeling the "boys in brown" made guap. It used to be extremely difficult to get a delivery job with them. I heard it's getting easier now.
UPS is my first and only job. Started working part time in 08. In 2018 I got hired as a feeder driver straight from package handling. Just reached scale pay around Christmas and life is just comfortable. 💯
I got hired off the street during the pandemic, usually they hire drivers from within but I guess they needed drivers, I'm about to hit 2 years and this company has been ok to me, the insurance is supposedly one of the best but I haven't really used it so idk but the pay is great, the hours suck if you aren't a hard worker, i normally work from 9am-7:45 with one 1 hour unpaid lunch, sometimes they force you to work 6 days but it's based on seniority so they force from the bottom up .... one good thing is that if they work you over 9.5 hours for more than 3 days in a week you can file a grievance because of that and you get payed overtime rate for every hour you work over the 9.5 hours.... so basically triple pay..... starting driver pay is 21, 1 year 23, 2 years 24, 3 years 28.75, 4 years is top pay at 40.50
@@matthewp9740 in my opinion it's the hours, sometimes they force you in to work 6 days a week, we don't work Sundays to that's the only guaranteed day off but as you gain more seniority over the years theu won't force you anymore, that's pretty much it in my opinion, if you can survive to first couple years then you will have a great job cause this job is all based on seniority, the drivers that been here the longest don't get forced in on their days off, they have first dibs on the routs they want, and are first in line to pick vacation times.... but as I said you can get on the "9.5 list" so if they try to fuck you over and overwork you yih can file grievances and get payed "triple time" for very hour that you worked over 9.5 hours, but you have to work over 9.5 hours for 3 days or more in a week so it's basically free money
@@matthewp9740 also you will never work over 60 hours in a week cause of some rule they have so that's good but I'm lazy and I like to be at home so it pisses me off when they force me in to work Saturdays but on average I work about 48-50 hours a week, and when I work the 6th day is goes to around 58-60 but you cant pass 60 because of dot rules
@@matthewp9740 also it depends on the routes too bro I'm sure you know some routes are a bitch and others are stress free and you just listen to podcast or music all day I'm sure you know how it is but like I said once you gain a good amount of seniority you will be able to have first dibs on the routes that you want
@@ericzz93 yeah right now at express my route is pretty easy! I only do pickups and work about 6 to 7 hours on road. What kills me sometimes is they make us do package handler work when we return, which can be sometimes a lot. Unloading trucks scanning packages etc…. I just wish pay was better but I don’t think that’s ever coming lol 😂
It’s crazy how FedEx Express isn’t even trying to compete with UPS as far as pay. You would think they would at least a little competitive pay wise. They would probably retain more drivers. I believe UPS drivers are union. They are here in CT. That could be the difference
Im in michigan. I was hired off the street last month as a seasonal driver for ups. They said if i do well they'll hire me full-time at the end of the seasonal peroid.

Ups is all about seniority especially in the warehouse and when it’s peak season all the managers and supervisors are assholes for no reason if your applying for ups don’t apply during the holidays apply in the beginning of the year
Every 6 drivers that are hired at UPS they have to hire 1 off the street. From what I have seen almost every off the street hire is just a supervisor that quits and they hire him/her for the position. It gives them someone who is fairly familiar with the position that they can trust moving forward. I also see it as a way they can spy on the driving force by placing in a former supervisor in within them.
