Want to START a business? Go here: skool.com/games
If you’re new to my channel, my name is Alex Hormozi. I’m the founder and managing partner of Acquisition.com. It’s a family office, which is just a formal way of saying we invest our own money into companies. Our 10 portfolio companies bring in over $200,000,000+ per year. Our ownership stake varies between 20% and 100% of them. Given this is a YT channel, and anyone can claim anything, I’ll give you some stuff you can google to verify below.
How I got here…
21: Graduated Vanderbilt in 3 years Magna Cum Laude, and took a fancy consulting job.
23 yrs old: Left my fancy consulting job to start a business (a gym).
24 yrs old: Opened 5 gym locations.
26 yrs old: Closed down 6th gym. Lost everything.
26 yrs old: Got back to launching gyms (launched 33). Then, lost everything for a 2nd time.
26 yrs old: In desperation, started licensing model as a hail mary. It worked.
27 yrs old: "Gym Launch" does $3M profit the next 6 months. Then $17M profit next 12 months.
28 yrs old: Started Prestige Labs. $20M the first year.
29 yrs old: Launched ALAN, a software company for agencies to work leads for customers. Scaled to $1.7mmo within 6 months.
31 yrs old: Sold 75% of UseAlan to a strategic buyer in an all stock deal.
31 yrs old: Sold 66% of Gym Launch & Prestige Labs at $46.2M valuation in all-cash deal to American Pacific Group. (you can google it)
31 yrs old: Started our family office Acquisition.com. We invest and scale companies using the $42M in distributions we had taken + the cash from the $46.2M exit.
32 yrs old: Started making free content showing how we grow companies to make real business education accessible to everyone (and) to attract business owners to invest or scale their businesses.
34 yrs old: I became co-owner of Skool.com to help the many people who want to start a business online do so.
Today: Our portfolio now does $200M/yr between 10 companies. The largest doing $100M/yr the smallest doing $5M per year. Our ownership varies between 20% and 100% ownership of the companies. Many of them we invested in early and helped grow (which is how we make our money - not youtube videos).
To all the gladiators in the arena, we’re all in the middle of writing our own stories. The worse the monsters, the more epic the story.
You either get an epic outcome or an epic story. Both mean you win.
Keep crushing. May your desires be greater than your obstacles.
Never quit,
Alex
FULL DISCLOSURE
I make content to make money - just - on a longer time horizon than most. I want to build trust with business owners so we can find the best ones and help them scale. And if they’re awesome, write them a check and go all the way as partners.

You've basically described my life. Most people don't understand what a toxic family environment is like. They just say family is important and hold this stigma of you not wanting to be with your family. It is of course important, but it should never be so important that it ruins your growth and who you are.

I admire his work ethic and resolve, and take what lessons I can from it. But ultimately I see an angry, insecure man speaking from a place not of confidence but of unresolved trauma. There's no question that fear and pain can drive people to do great things, and he often speaks about this. I can relate to the fear of an old identity that he refers to in this video. But I also believe that a complete, healed human being doesn't need to run from that because it's been integrated and he's comfortable looking at the old self in the eye, with full knowledge that he has become something better. I also believe that no amount of success can replace family and friends. Furthermore, healthy relationships with family are regularly updated, so the metamorphosis is witnessed as it happens and annual gatherings don't carry the risks of meeting an old self like this. With all that said, I acknowledge that every situation is different, families are complicated, and his advice will be quite relevant for a minority of people (as he says in the video). But it would be a sad, cold world if everyone was so obsessed with their own journey that they become estranged from their family

Alex is so good at deconstructing scenarios into actionable task. The one aspect that I would add to this conversation is that it is important to let others see the life you are living. Much like the access Hormozi gives us to his life through these videos. The best way for others to see the changes they need to make is not by telling them but by the display of your life against theirs. For example, to see how crooked a stick is put a straight stick next to it. Ultimately, it is imperative to continually grow as a person. But it is also part of life to bring others along with.

I couldn’t relate more. I even left the whole continent 2 years ago at 19 years old to start fresh and can never fathom the thought of ever going back to the same environment. It’s hard to accept this idea and it takes lots of guts especially at a young age. But the progress I‘ve made since then is remarkable and that‘s what gives me validation to never look back no matter how lonely it feels at the meantime. One day it will all pay off.

Alex, Thank you for sharing this. My grown children have this same problem with their Dad. He is toxic and makes them feel like crap when they don’t want to go to family get togethers or holidays, so they go to avoid the arguments and pain they would endure if they didn’t go. I sent them this video, and I hope that they can see that it’s ok do just do “you” and not feel bad about saying no, to stand up for themselves and the direction they want to go in. If family was so important they wouldn't be treating you like shit and driving you away. I will warn you, that it is as painful and difficult as it is scary. Though, it is very effective especially if you need it to grow and get better. First off, treat them like crap back and like Alex says in the video, do not tolerate them even with little things, belittling you with words or whatever. Stop responding to them for everything, and just make sure to get them out of your life the LEAST stressful way possible, because it will be stressful. In the end, you will be SO MUCH better for it. Even forgiveness may present itself down the road, sometimes not though.

I think you overthink the issue. You go back to see your family you never know how long you will have them. it doesn't mean you need to compromise your life principles or whatever. You spend a couple of days with them compared to hundreds of days without them, so if you are on your way with discipline and character, Î see absolutely no issue with going back to see your family. You'll change your mind when you grow older and realize we don't live forever and our time with each other is limited.

This is a nice thought and probably true for most people but how worth it is it really when the time that you do spend with them is ultimately negative and degrading? You will be hurt by their passing regardless, you are just choosing to suffer more as FOMO on them when they are gone, but are you really missing out if your time spent there is just maneuvering around people who don't respect you? I'd actually argue it's still better to not put yourself through that since it probably only makes you resent them more and it's better to just exit on as good of terms as possible.
@firsthelix6726
@firsthelix6726 2 месяца назад
@@mrswagout I strongly believe you gotta find peace with your family, best as long as the members are alive, or you will suffer or struggle anywhere else in life. You can try to ignore the importance of your family tree, but the invisible energies will eventually influence the quality of your life and your relationships with others.

I've been in your shoes and all I see is a really smart guy suffering. It sucks to come from a toxic familly, but going lone wolf and overworking is not the solution. This comes from a deep rooted pain that is hard to face, but facing it, and working on yourself to not be triggered or affected by any actions or words from your familly will make you so peaceful. You would become truly zen, and there will be no more pain, all while being imune to all the toxic traits and past triggers. This is what true healing feels like. You become a whole new person, all the disciplined and dedicated work comes from another emotional place and will feel 100x better, and you will be capable of a lot love towards yourself and others again.😊

Love this! I can completely relate. If you're striving to be the best version of yourself most people won't understand you, nor should they. I used to think there was something wrong with me for years. I never quite belonged. I grew frustrated, and depressed. There's nothing wrong with me. It's simply that I outgrew my environment. The hardest thing is to identify this very fact. Harder still, to accept that you must, and should, move on if you want to continue to grow. Even if it's lonewolf for a while. Have faith. New people will enter your life, just like you. I'm learning this right now. 🙏🏼 Thanks Alex. ❤

The funny part is that it's the same wether you made it or not! If you're still at their level, the tease, if you level up they hate. It's a matter of choosing a fight. Or better yet as you said, just block'em. I honestly just did that this exact morning. I want to live a peaceful, clean, pure, honest life and it starts with cleaning my network from ANY being that brings negativity. Regardless of the relationship I have with them. Also because I'm still "tender" launching my business, my skin is getting thicker but I can't guarantee the part x in me won't listen to their comments about my business or my font or what I wore. I have zero issues with my family and try to spend as much time with them as possible, but this really applies to me for old friendships. Examples of friends in town after not talking for multiple years and they just expect you to drop everything and make them the main priority. Can apply this advice to many different circumstances and I feel refreshed after watching this video because I had to play the cold shoulder to some old high school "friends" who I hadn't talked to in many years and then they are back in town and expected me to just do whatever they wanted.

I needed to hear this. It's mostly because of my friends. I acted in ways I dislike that invited bad behaviour and I relapse when I meet old friends, it's a bit horrible. But getting away from that feels like I'm running away from my problems and I'm being an entitled human-being while doing so and it absolutely sucks. So I *do* need outside permission from someone who has their life together because right now I don't. I also don't know if I'm gonna achieve great shit but I do want to excell at the things I love, do them my way and share them with the right folk. It’s an interesting take on mental health and therapy, and addressing your own state of mind instead of believing that you have to share the same goals and values for yourself that other people claim you should have. I like listening to his opinion because it gives me a different perspective, even if I don’t have this specific problem (with my family / holidays, for example) I can still understand why someone else may not feel comfortable coming home for the holidays. I was recently pulled aside by my family, who were telling me that I wasn't considering how they were feeling when I would go outside of my comfort zone and do things like saying hi to strangers and meditating in public. They would shame me for dancing in public, and would say that I would be pushing people away by being "weird". That I was being selfish for not considering how my actions were embarrassing them. Yet, I tried telling them that what I was doing was not only true to who I am as a person, but is actively helping challenge my own fears and self-doubts. When I tried to say this while still acknowledging what they were saying, they said that I was being stubborn and not listening to them... So good bye to them then! Thanks for sharing your perspective. However my mother nearly died of cancer so I know the other side that Alex alludes to. Life from 0-30 is a struggle for independence, and it's easy to think it always will be. However: at a point the tables flip. It shocked me how suddenly and unexpectedly. I know Alex feels rage towards his Dad. However forgiveness is not for your parents: it's for you. Best thing I ever did was forgive them - it frees so much energy. 😊 Alex does apply nuance to this in that he doesn't rule out going home. What he forgets is: those frames from youth dissipate, and you become the family leader. You can run away from the family and having to lead it, but aged 30-50(ish) is your time to lead. And feeling 'A Prophet is without honour in his hometown' is true, but not a reason to abandon your duty to your blood.

Thanks for sharing your perspective. However don't thrust ideas into Alex's mind. Does he feel rage towards his dad? How would you know that. Has he not forgiven his Dad? How would you know that. I came fairly toxic home environment myself and one of the hardest parts to leaving and staying left is the judgment you get from everyone. People that don't understand your situation, because how could they, they didn't live your home life. No one has any duty to their blood. There are many horrible people out there with families. Even hardcore criminals make babies. What're you to say to those children when they grow up? That they have a duty to their blood?

Most of the time they do this for the parents and/or the image. I known a very prominent family in the community that still does these family reunion/vacations and the shit I hear from certain honest family members is laughable. What is the chance that all the in-laws and even sibling dynamics will be that of chosen friends or dare I say “chosen family”. Too much energy and even monetary resources have been wasted on keeping an image. So many more things you could do with money or time that would have otherwise been spent on YOU. But we are manipulated and told we are selfish for wanting things for ourselves. Isn’t that what they are doing themselves with all their familial expectations? Set your loved ones free. And don’t interfere in their chosen life because I truly believe a lot more marriages would last if it wasn’t for nosey family or obligations we are scared to just say no to, even for life.
