Why I don't have a HUGE Mitre Saw Station!

Welcome back to another Gosforth Handyman Tips Library video! In this video I'm explaining why I don't have a massive mitre station for my mitre saw in my workshop. A few people of asked about this so I explain it all in this video and also let you know why you shouldn't build one for a new shop until you're sure you need it. Obviously everyone has a different workflow in their workshop so in certain cases a mitre station may be beneficial, but for me it's not really necessary. Pop in the comments what you use for a mitre saw station!

I was starting to like this channel, but this video has me rather confused. On one level, I’m irritated that I just watched what seems to be a 13 minute ad for the plans you are selling for this. On another, why would anyone need plans to build this?
@GosforthHandyman
@GosforthHandyman 4 года назад
@@hairfritz2667 Excuse me?? I sell plans for this since many people asked me for plans for this. They contain some useful tips and info not included in the original vid and if a £2.50 plan saves someone from spending £1000+ on a mitre station they don't need then great. If you check the date on the video and the date on this post you'll notice the plans came well after the video. The video doesn't even mention the plans. If you're clever enough that you don't need the plans then don't buy them. For everyone else, the support is appreciated to help me make more independent videos - thank you! 👍😀

I wonder if you can really appreciate how much this video must be helping new woodworkers get over the feeling of inadequacy that they’re bound to feel when they see others with these massive woodshops with dedicated shop built full length mitrestations and they’ve only got a one car garage that’s so small you’d struggle to open one door on an old 1960’s Austin mini in it, or else they’re in an old 8x6 shed in the garden. (Long sentence I know but I was on a roll) As I said in one of your other videos. Thank you thank you thank you. For some bloody common sense, realism and normality. 👍

Seeing this showed me to make the workbench I really want and need but still able to use it as a miter station. I think the only thing I would add is to make mounting holes for the miter saw to keep it from moving around on me.

Wow! Thank you for the great idea! I did make one small change, though. I used a 3/16" round bar as a pin to register against rather than a piece of wood screwed to the top of the block. It eliminates the need to keep the blocks perpendicular to the saw. Also, the pin can be removed to make other cuts without unscrewing the top stop or unclamping the block.

Great video, and good idea. SA an add to that design, if you mounted a face rail to the front of your bench, and added a t-track you could omit the clamp and slide it to any position and clamp through the box with a t bolt. also add a sliding plate on the side of the box to omit having to screw the top stop on. this is what I did to mine. thanks for the design idea. keep up the good work.

Very practical . i’ve been doing that for forty years. I could never justify making an exotic bench for my miter saw when a block of wood works just fine. Personally i think a lot of wood workers spend more time buying tools improving their shop , buying more tools, remodeling their shop buying tools they don’t need but are cool ,etc etc. o.k. you get the point.

I have a mitre 'cabinet' - basically a cabinet with a work surface the exact size of the saw, and a surface on hinges on the left that folds up to the level of the mitre fence/bed. It's like a combination of the two ideas! It sort of looks like this from the front, lol: ______ ¶_ \¦__¦ Plus I can store scraps and things like that underneath, and it's got a small channel at the back for dust. Thanks for a lovely video!

I love it. I keep both my cars in my 2 car garage and do considerable woodworking by moving my cars out and setting up my saw horses with an old door and mitre saw. For 25 years I just stacked up scrap wood pieces to get my wood at the right height. You inspired me to build a dedicated support that will not only get my wood at the exact height, but allow for a stop. I know all about full size Mitre stations because I helped a friend build a great one in his shop which I have used. The only advantage of that one is that it has a built in and calibrated ruler. However, mine has the advantages that you pointed out in addition to working in my small temporary shop. Thanks so much for sharing your idea and insight.
@SenselessUsername
@SenselessUsername 5 лет назад
Also, the calibrated rulers get out of calibration... You must keep track of how much it's off (1 or 2 sides, if you have both sides tape), admittedly still faster than re-measuring for each cut; as well as the mitre saw's fence going out of line with the long mitre station fence. I think you're actually now getting more and more "why I removed my station fence" videos =).

Hi Andy that's a great idea of yours very handy, and i agree with the statement that some stations do look amazing, i have gone the route of two small benches with a drop shelf in the middle for the saw to sit on. I have a Metabo Sliding Mitre Saw and a Metabo Chop Saw and both are flush with the bench tops, if i don't need to use them they are underneath the bench with a top to fill the space left, and i still get my workbench space. Im disapointed in table mode. The table moves too much and has a spring to it. If you press on it it moves down a cm and then springs back up when you let go. And yes the pin in the back is in and the nuts tight. Also the guide rail does not sit flush to the table surface when tightened and moves too much. I use it for rough cuts as there is no accuracy to it with all the flex and movement.

That's a clever and simple system. I have a cheap sliding miter saw without any station around it (mainly because it stands on a workbench which is only 100 cm wide) I did make some supporting blocks but they are not so sofisticated and I can not clamp them at the front edge of the bench, only at the side ends. I'll try to make your style of "blocks". They are much better. Thanks for sharing.

A banged up scrap of 2x4 with DO NOT THROW AWAY scribbled on it was my mitre station for years as I've never seemed to have time to prioritise upgrading it until recently. Now I've upgraded to a better mobile block similar to in this video, plus I've cut a small section of bench that just lifts off & can then be slid onto some bearers lower down which makes it the correct height for the surface of my mitre saw bed to be flush with the rest of the benches so now I have the option to do either.

Very helpful video. I'm still in the thought process of setting up my own shop and am weighing the pros and cons of a dedicated miter station. My father had one and I saw firsthand how handy it was. On the other hand, I have half the amount of space he had and don't like the idea of any one piece of furniture occupying a lot of space. To start out with, I think I'm going to start with a crosscut sled on the table saw. If that is too clumsy or inaccurate or somehow doesn't work. I"ll look into other alternatives. THanks for your thoughts. KB.

As the proud owner of a one car garage just like newts nest describes, my "mitre station" is a makita saw on a shelf and a makita stand folded up against the wall. When the need arises they get assembled on the drive. The stand has a workable stop block and support arm. It turns out that big mitre stations are incompatible with fridges, washing machines, bikes, lawnmowers, tumble dryers, tents and a wide variety of other things. One day, when having a big workshop is what is holding me back (a long way up the learning curve from where I am now) I'll build one. I think the risk with "Pro shop" videos is that they make people think they can't do good work without one. I can't but it's not because I don't have a 40 square meter workshop.

Hi, I have mine mounted between two benches but sunk down so that its level with them. I have recently fitted a sacrificial fence and that helps line up the cuts and gives me a better squarer cut. (my fence is not adjustable and is out of square) Totally agree with you Andy that the longer fence can cause issues. btw, mine is a cheap nasty mitre saw i bought from B&Q years ago before i had kitted out a small workshop, but it does the job ok if i am careful and check for square before i cut. Thanks. Shows you can achieve much with only a little plus a good dollop of common sense and experience. That said sometimes it's just easier to buy the tool(s) if you can afford..... I was going to convert my old circular saw into a quasi chop saw, looked at a cheapo sliding mitre ex Lidl (too big, didn't look accurate) so bought an entry level De Walt. Very pleased and relatively good value, occasionally fitted with small diy zero clearance fence/stop, screwed into position. Wanted a good stand or table. Looked into making own (bulky, heavy, not much saving) so decided to buy DeWalt folding stand. Much better. The cost of properly designed/made tools is soon forgotten - long after the functionality and quality remains. Stand folds, stows away, relatively light/stable and comes with extendable support arms/rollers with stops etc. I definitely recommend a good stand to amplify the utility of a mitre saw. If not DeWalt then other folders can also be found (occasionally on deal at ScrewFix) for circa £50. Having used I'm really glad I just bought one rather than trying to 'knit my own'. My DW doesn't have the functionality of a full size bespoke station with flip stops, accurate measure etc and at times I would like a bigger fence and greater height/width capacity but all that costs a lot more and eats space. If a large Festool Kapex with 4m station, fitted with a plethora of stops, micro adjusters etc is seen as the 'gold standard' then a reasonable entry level sliding DW mitre with stand can be bought for maybe just 20% will do maybe 80% of the top level kit and will be more than enough for most DIY enthusiasts.

Thanks for this video! I'm trying to organize my shop and so I've been looking at a miter saw station and table saw outfeed table and some other ideas. I have plenty of room but very little time because I'm also an overworked wage slave in my spare time--50-60 hours a week. So I don't want building out my shop to be a long complicated series of projects. I really want a usable woodshop right away so I'm always looking for alternatives to the big fancy shop builds. What brought me here was the decision to build a miter saw station to replace my folding Dewalt Miter Saw stand...it works well but isn't ideal for many reasons. When I see a fancy miter saw station with long companion fences my question was, "What do other people use that space BEHIND the fence for?" All that table space behind the fence seemed wasted to me. So I started watching videos with the idea that I already knew I was going to build a station but I wanted to see how other people used that "wasted" space behind the fence. Plus, I sometimes take the saw out to where I'm working if building something for the yard, deck or garden so I wanted it to be portable as it is today with the Dewalt stand. The table saw outfeed idea is on hold also because as I was trying to work that our I realized that I have 3 roller stands that have served well for 20 years. I don't need to build a table saw table if I just keep using the roller stands for now. I'm headed out to the shop now to see if there are other projects I can scrap for better ideas. 🙂

Brilliant idea. I have. 12" Hitachi compound and was going to build a medium sized station for it. No more. Just a simple bench top mount like yours, with a couple of those movable supports. Way less space when not needed. I like to keep my workshop tools movable/portable, since I don't have a ton of space. Tx for the idea!

Never heard such a clear, straight forward reason to NOT have the fancy ‘Bells and Whistles’ side pieces. I was expecting to replace radial arm saw and have mitre saw lowered to counter top height and inset tracks on either side as I just saw the lady at DIY Montreal do. Now, I may keep RAS and build those two boxes and, as you suggest, see if I really need mitre saw lowered and route out for those tracks and tape measure. No one has ever mentioned the issue with warped wood. I wonder why, since it’s probably a common issue. Although I mill my own stock, warped wood can still be an issue especially when working with 2x4 purchased construction lumber. Thank you. This is such a common sense answer.

I must have watched about a dozen videos for building mitre saw stations, lol. Glad I saw this one before I started. Like you say, they just aren’t flexible. I think I’ll concentrate my efforts on a dust collection shroud. Thanks!

Why didn't I think of this? Brilliant! Because I’m a software engineer and I like to make things complicated and difficult to sustain the illusion that I am clever. Now just put those puppies on a movable and adjustable height sawhorse and you don’t even need a bench. Watched three of your vids due to RU-vid suggesting your channel and pre determined if I learn something new in each video I would subscribe. Just subbed. Thanks for your content.

Just planning my workshop and trying to work out how to set up the mitre saw. It was really clogging up the planning. I was really struggling with massive amount of space they take. Your video came up in my search and it solved my problem. I love the solution you have as I can set up multiple cuts and not take up most of my bench.

Mate I couldn't agree more. I just half finished making a mitre station and have realised its just total overkill for my small shop. No where for my drill press bench grinder etc... As much as I hate to it's coming apart and perhaps Mark II will be better.

I've just came across this video, love it. I have a smallest workspace and trying to figure out how to fit my machines in to it (i do like my power tools :) ) , I'm looking at mitre saw station, flip carts, etc and on top of that I want a MFT worktop, I must have looked at 50 designs. This is the perfect solution, the simplicity is beautiful

True story : Just finished my first project using only a circular saw and decided right then I need a mitre saw. Anyone who's ever tried to do repeated cross cuts on a circular saw will understand why. So first question is where will it go? Well obviously it will need a table surface -> After a fair bit of using google, ok so a mitre station is a thing. The recessed saw in between 2 tables is the most common design. Already looking fairly complicated. Next question is placement, if you're in a garage having it on the back wall might be logical until you have to cut long boards and you realize you're now limited by the width of the garage. So any existing table you had there in the back where most people start building isn't going to cut it. So it's starting to look like you need a dedicated station, and in addition there's the question of a stop block. Yeah now you're in the T track territory. At least in Europe T tracks aren't really a thing. Whatever they cost in the US, well they're twice or 3 times the price here, and then at least in Central Europe you just can't buy the tracks alone, no, instead they're sold as fastening systems, with all the slots and only 1200mm of track. So now you need at least 4 of these! To put things in perspective, the price of the tracks alone would be the same price as my damn circular saw which is top of the line Ryobi Brushless. Then comes the question of routing the path for the tracks. Fine if you have a router, otherwise not so fine, even if you have a trim router like me chances are you're going to want to buy a new bit to avoid multiple passes, that's a lot of track to lay. Yeah it's getting expensive, and the mitre saw wasn't cheap, and I guess your wife is also watching all these purchases. Around this time you're thinking maybe it's a bad idea to get the mitre saw, But then you watch this video and realize all you need is an existing bench, a clamp, some screws and a bit of plywood. Really nice work.

Great idea but You flash show the mitre station you are talking about.... How about a diagram of it... The dimensions will change for each person but basic design will be there!!!!!!!!!!!! It is like see what it got now I will let you have one for this amount of money if you buy or it mines not yours and you can not play with it!!!!!!!! Instead of sell the next videos show it up close and slow!!!!!!!!!!!! Teaching is more than just talking!!!!!!!!

Same with cutting wonky steel lengths. What is the best way to produce a 2 inch deep mortise joint across a 4x4 inch timber ? Options, before I buy the right tool: circular saw, router or a sliding mitre saw with a depth stop ? I think the big 12 inch sliding mitres saws are inherently dimensionally unstable, and possibly not up to the task ? Agree, thus a small Festool kapex 60 is better option ?

I get what you’re saying, but I think you might have misunderstood what the main purpose of these large stations are. My miter say station lines one wall of my two car garage shop. It is 13 feet long on the left side of the saw and 5 feet on the right side of the saw. It’s massive, granted, but I have 12 - 6” tall drawers that are 20” deep on the top, and 6 - 12 “ tall drawers on the bottom. I also have two cavities that can House a trash can and an air compressor/shop vac. Plus, the dust hood with built in dust collection keeps my shop much cleaner. Different strokes for different folks I guess.

Hmmm. Having a big table with the miter saw in the middle IS A BIG MITER STATION. I define a miter station as "a place where a miter saw is permanently situated that allows for cutting long pieces of wood from either side, generally as long as you'd expect your lumber to come from the supplier". fences and raised tables are accouterments that they often come with to ease handing of boards but not without complications as you point out. . regarding your disdain for the long fence, i agree with your assessment, that they are a pain in the butt, and unnecessary. There are plenty of examples where people make miter stations without the fences and i would agree with that, you only need the miter saw fence to make your cuts. The need for horizontal support is more relevant and necessary. i wouldn't call your little block a miter station, it is what it is , a "support block". I can see why you like it. I personally would rather have the miter saw sitting at the same height as your table (which you can do just by sinking your miter saw), then you just need a stop block, not a support block.

No, Hinny No. You divvin't need to build a fence reet across the top of ya work bench. It's unnecessary. The only bit of fence that matters is the one on the mitre saw itself. That's where the cut takes place. Trying to get ya board square with the blade for a 6 or 8 feet length of whatever ya cuttin' is counterproductive. Just put ya T-track in the bench by routing an appropriate size channel, screw aa doon and use a stop block so you can do repetitive cuts. Aah deen't knaa. What's the warld comin' tee?

originally , i just built 2 platforms on my work bench to flank the saw , but i got so frustrated trying to keep the thing in square that while looking on youtube to learn how to set up my saw , i found the "RON PAULK ' total work station, so i built a version of that ( a very modified version), and built a diy version of the FESTOOL MFT2 work top, with the cutting tracks and fence ( a track saw on a mitre gauge),and that is built into the work bench, i have dog holes on the whole surface and down the sides, so this mitre guide tracking is 3 main pieces ,and they align with the dog holes, and can be removed ,and being that it is my only bench, with a bunch of holes for little parts to get lost in, i have another top, with just a few dog holes and a slot in it for clamps and a back stop, or whatever else i might want in it, and that just sits on top of the mft top. it was cheap to build , and all it really cost was my time in planning, but there are very few things that can misalign it , so no more crying to myself about the earth's precession changing gravity and forcing my saw out of square, or whatever bazar theory i came up with as to why my saw sucked

I have a miter station I guess, since it has fences etc, but its on a mobile rolling bench. It also serves some additional purposes as storage etc. My table saw is a job site dewalt saw that I can roll out and set up temporarily when needed. Between the table saw, the miter saw, a jig saw, an orbital sander, a drill, an impact, a pin nailer, and a few hand tools I can get done what I need to. I own and operate a home renovations business, so I have a much larger selection of tools if needed, like 18G brad nailer, 16G finish nailer, oscillating saw, reciprocating saws, 7.25” circular saws, 4.5” circular saws, and the list goes on and on....but when Im in my quiet shop space for some relax time I kind of just keep it simple. One could really do a lot with just a table saw, some glue, sand paper, tape measure, small square, a sharp chisel or two, and a couple basic hand tools. Once you build your first table saw sled the options in building things really open up

Ok I know this video was a long time ago and I agree with your premise that you don't need a 90 degree continuous back fence however you refer to this as a 'mitre station' whereas what you actually mean is the continuous back fence. I just want to add an idea that you didn't cover which may solve to a degree your mitre saw issue in the example you used with the piece of wood with the spring/curve in it. In your example it was springing also because it was leaning against the right hand fence of the mitre saw, so why couldn't you just cut 5mm ahead of your line first, then it would sit in close and problem solved! Some points to make, a mitre station is more than just a fence! It's a mitre saw that sits lower than bench height, with a shroud and often very good dust collection. I personally don't want to be moving a mitre saw round the shop, I prefer it fitted into a dedicated mitre station because of the convenience of use and dust collection. One mistake I see continually done by woodworkers is they build mitre stations only for 90 deg or 90 deg angled cuts but often their saws cannot tilt for doing compound cuts or it is restricted in movement because of poor mitre station design. This would drive me nuts. Why build in limitations to your tools? It's crazy. I am with you though on the idea you have presented in this video although, I still will have a mitre station but without a fence as you are right in that the only relevant area is the area of the mitre saw itself, the protruding part of the wood is irrelevant as it could have all sorts of bends/bows. Thanks for the video, I enjoyed it and mostly agree with what you said.

I’m so glad I found this video. Definitely not doing a miter saw fence system as the problems you pointed out make it not worth it. That being said, if I’m building my workbench from scratch, I am still leaning towards dropping the miter saw down so the table lines up with the work bench. Built in support. I don’t need my miter saw to move around the shop. There’s one place I want it. Any issues you see with that?

I actually use a similar system to yours for much the same reasons. One thing I did a little different was installed a short piece of Tee Track in on of my “miter station” blocks so I can use a stop block with it instead of screwing the stop block down.

Hi, I have built a small mitre saw station on wheels that is about 3 feet by 1 1/2 feet wide. The main reason I built mine was to get extra draws and a 6" shelf just below the saw so that I had some ware to put tapes & pencils etc so they were not in the way as I cut the wood.

I too struggled with not wanting the large fence and table set ups, but wanted to make repeat cuts of various lengths. My mind kept saying I needed T track. This was EXACTLY the solution i needed. I did add tee nuts in the bench from below so they were flush. This allowed me to screw the saw to the table to ensure nothing moves while I work and make those cuts. Thank You!

He makes valid points, but I think he's assuming too much. Yes, you can get your horizontal support with a big workstation, or smaller supports like his. But the vertical portion of the fence on a larger station is more for a place to fix a stop block system for consistent repeat cuts. Also, many people use the size of a miter station to build storage drawers and cabinets for tools and other things in the shop. It's really about the space you have available, your personal work process, and needs. He's right that a large workstation isn't always necessary.

I think this is the reason Ron Paulk's miter station has no extended fence and the stop system is built into a T-track in the extended table. But I do like your sliding block. Simple is always best when you don't want to spend your life customizing a shop and have loads of other work to do. I bet you could get an adhesive tape measure and line it up so one edge of your sliding block puts it on any repetitive cut you may need. Maybe adhere the measuring tape a strip of 1/4" and attach it with screws to the table just behind the sliding block in elongated holes so it can be fine tuned left-to-right until its dead on.

My friend you just save me from heading down a rabbit hole - wasting a bunch of time building something that would consume a huge portion of my work room. thanks very much! I think I might set up an area for repeated use of my miter saw that has a method of measuring for cuts. Perhaps I can establish it on the front edge of my wall side work bench and integrate it's use with your version of the miter saw station : )

I've been doing the same for many years mostly just because I've been too lazy to build a station, but I've always been in a space not large enough. I do set my saw further back on the bench for more bench space in front of it (even knocking a hole in the wall sometimes). And I screw a stop block system to the shop wall (just need to adjust the tape measure to wherever the saw is bolted down).

Considering custom cabinet makers set up their miter saws on the job site and never use more than the fence that is on their saw a continual fence is nothing but a waste of workspace. I'm moving out of a shed and into a shop so I'm looking at designs. In my shed I had 3 tables with the miter table 3 1/2 shorter. My wood laid flush across the benches but by making them separate pieces I was able to reconfigure my space as needed. There is no way I would not have my saw embedded in my bench.

I have one of those tiny cheapo hand mitre saw jigs. Probably only designed for picture framing. Mostly works for small cuts but I did buy an aluminium blade and cut a whole bunch of structural aluminium rails for one project. It is screwed to one end of a length of ply about 1.2m long ... with a coach bolt screwed about three turns in at the other end to support the longer rails. Yes, there is a bit of decorator's tape on the bolt to stop it marking the aluminium. It even has some very thin ply taped to the fence to also add protection.
