I don't really like using tripods. They're fantastic tools, and help produce great images, but they disrupt my workflow and slow me down. That's not to say you shouldn't use one, and there are times when I couldn't be without mine, but generally - I don't like it.

Lots of people suggesting I utilise the quick release plate. In other words, not use the tripod. I agree :) Also, anyone else ever seen a tractor do a backflip?

You're using a tripod with a QUICK RELEASE plate, why not use it? That's what it's for 😀 Then your tripod is still set up to capture the sunset when you've finished trying to capture anything and everything that's going on around you 👍

The reasons you gave are why I switched mostly to using a monopod. I prefer handheld, but I'm not quite steady enough most of the time. About the only time I use a tripod is at family gatherings to get the group shot that I have to be in or video, of course. 🙂Also, this one was definitely worth 5 more absolutely nothings. I know it isn't much, but I guess you could get a couple of coffees or something.

I take the half way approach (well, 1/3 really) and use a monopod. Multiple uses: walking stick, sheep repeller, dog controller, child prodded to get them up the hills, undergrowth beater and occasionally, I sit my camera on it.

I think that I have just resigned to the fact that I would not attempt the photograph the girl being attacked by seagulls. I would just enjoy it watching it happen (enjoy?! Yeah I think I would...) whilst releasing the shutter on the good light on the shard.
@oneeyedphotographer
@oneeyedphotographer 6 лет назад
David Dixon I agree. If I were shooting at The Shard, I would be using my best lens for that job, and it's entirely unsuitable for shooting damsels in distress and for shooting sandshoe tossers. I sometimes carry two bodies though.

I wish there was a tripod head mount for a bean-bag, so you can just rest the camera lens on the tripod for steady shots, but you weren't attached all the time. I searched but couldn't find any.

How about carrying 2 cameras? One for the tripod, and one for those opportunity shots? Use something like an OM-D EM5II with a 14-140 lens. Not big and bulky, but ready for anything that pops up.

I am similar to you in the sense I rarely use a tripod (although I ironically own 3 tripods and 3 mini tripods - figures...). A good photo does not need to be tack sharp. It needs to draw someone in, and hopefully tell a story. Most the time I go hiking or traveling I use a 24-240mm lens on a full frame body and get plenty of detail hand held (Even to the point where I have printed them at 30" by 20"). Again - I don't want to miss shots or faff around with changing lenses. Where I do use tripods are for situations where I specifically need long shutter speeds, or I have gone to specifically shoot something, or I want to be in the picture. It's similar to the lens situation - I do carry some primes that give me options to get super sharp images if I really want to slow the entire workflow down. I think you should try a superzoom.... it's very freeing....

@ekevanderzee9538
@ekevanderzee9538 4 года назад
IF the main thing is the fear of missing potential other shots, it might actually healthy to use one. Process, deliberately, concentration, Mindfull, purpose, etc. However, with modern cameras and stabilisation, I wonder what the actual need is besides long exposures. The weigh quite a bit and are a hassle. Also, they mentally constrain you.

Good video again. I also don't like to carry a tripod around and even if I do, I seldom use it. I think with your Lumix cameras with IBIS you don't really need it if your not doing a long exposure, too. But consindering your story: You could frame the original shot and just take the camera of the tripod with the quickrelease plate and put it back after. I get your point though. Have a great one =) Cheers!

Also, if your primary purpose is to capture landscape shots, then obviously you can't expect to be "ready" for any other types of situations that require fast acting. So carry 2 cameras, or maintain your purpose for the type of photography you intended to capture at that moment. We cannot sadly do both simultaneously (Unless you do a timelapse or long exposure and run off to do some street portraits!).

@marcusnz232

I agree; tripods have a place for certain types of photography at certain times. They are NOT a daily requirement for most other kinds of photography and can (and should) be left at home. If you are a travel photographer, you will lose count of the number of places around the world you visit which either (a) ban tripods altogether or (b) charge a fee for bringing them in. Pretty much the only time I use one personally is in astrophotography, to be honest. Still, you have made the quaint choice to live in Manchester (like my MiL) so perhaps a tripod for self-defence is another possible requirement...! ;-)

With the crazy stabilization in my em1.2 (and dual is) I don't really use tripod anymore and the mono-pod is a thing of past. I get the mono-pod for night photography and some bracketing else hand held even at 840mm equivalent.

I know what you mean about using a tripod in a city, use a tripod almost anywhere within the City of London and you'll be moved on by security guards before you get it levelled, but tripods, monopods, bean bags and hand holding are all useful skills to develop, horses for courses as the saying goes.

Without the bulk and weight of a tripod, you're more likely to walk more, go to less accessible places and get more interesting shots. With a tripod you're more likely to shoot close to eye level and get less interesting shots. Tripods have their uses, but I think too many people use them too often when they don't really need to.
@oneeyedphotographer
@oneeyedphotographer 6 лет назад
Jason Shallcross There is absolutely no reason a tripod should be set to eye level, unless eye level unless the best artistic choice, or your legs are handicapped by too many years. My preferred height is knee level, but sometimes much higher to clear instructions.
@jasonshallcross2741
@jasonshallcross2741 6 лет назад
Knee-height is likely to be more stable. When was the last time you saw someone use a tripod with the camera less than knee-height? I think there's a lot of enthusiasts out there who just use a tripod because they think it makes them look like a "proper" photographer and that it will somehow guarantee that they take better photos. I think people should use a tripod when they can't do handheld, rather than do handheld when they can't use a tripod.
@oneeyedphotographer
@oneeyedphotographer 6 лет назад
Jason Shallcross I use a tripod because I want to get the camera in my idea of the best position, and then to stay put. I want the camera level side to side, front to back. I went out today, I took two TS-E lenses and a 180mm macro lens, the last in the offchance I might find some wildflowers. I photographed off a jetty, the camera just high enough to clear the fence. I chose the TS-E 24, levelled the camera, shifted the front of the lens up and down to find the right place.

Now, a question for your next Q&A video: You sometimes mention that you often bracket your shots. Could you tell us a bit more about how and why you do that? Do you use exposure or focus bracketing? Do you bracket by 3, 5 or more shots? Can you get your shots properly aligned if you are shooting handheld? Looking forward to more videos from you, Greetings from little Denmark

I bought a tripod in a sale in the 1960s, I have never used it, never wanted to use it and never had the remotest use for it, a complete waste of money. I cant see the point in burdening myself with the stupid thing. If I need a long exposure I find something to jam the camera against like a a rock, tree, handrail or lampost etc; there is always something to hand. I have been taking photos since 1956 so, have I ever missed a shot because I didnt have a tripod? Not that I am aware of and if I am not aware of it I wouldnt have taken it anyway. With modern image stabilisation the need for a tripod has become even less essential. Stuff tripods, to me they conjure up the worst images possible of photography, I hate everything about them he he ;-)

I agree completely and feel less of an alien now. I couldn't say how often I've took one out and couldn't face staying still long enough to set it up. I need to keep getting up and down hillsides and rocks to explore every inch of where I've gone out for the day. I do use one occasionally, but I'm not a big fan of slow shutter speed waterfalls etc so unless it's dark I get by without. Everybody is different of course, apart from identical twins.. The solution to your dilema, is something that will cause you to carry more weight in your pack. Have a second camera body and lens for the unexpected dynamic shots you say you'd miss because of the setup time involved in recomposing you referenced as an example/excuse of not using a tripod. Considering it's not a bad idea to have a backup camera body with a lens might be worth considering. Given that you went from full frame to micro 4/3 to reduced weight in your pack, I get having a second camera is not your thing it's not your ideal solution. Just a thought.

Grab your phone and shoot the street stuff if they happen whilst your main camera is on the tripod ... or y`know ,get one of those tiny APS-C cams like a X100 or X70 and have that around your shoulder ^_~ Anyway enough joking. I don't like tripods in general either. I lived in Japan for a while. And everybody shoots with tripods there even in bright daylight of street scenes where you could easily shoot 1/4000 with F/8 (i.e everything will be sharp..) I only ever use tripods for long exposures to get light trails. And then i just resign to the fact that i`m focusing purely on that and nothing else.

James, would it make any sense to carry around a second camera? With the smaller form factor and easy portability why not? I am handicapped so I always use a tripod. I keep the legs together (like a mono pod) for those times when I might come across the birds and chips event. I also default to automatic and just start shooting when things get too crazy. My concentration is on keeping a stable shot. I know that is not very advanced but neither am I. Just working within my world. Moonpie

Couldn’t all of that be said for camera settings? I know I’ve botched shots because I’m setup for landscape and suddenly something “wildlife” goes off next to me...

True, although it's one less thing to think about I guess :)

Carry a second camera with a super zoom (like the 14-140) around your neck, or on your Peak Design. Problem solved!! The GX9 makes a pretty good mate for the G9 if you don't want to go the expense of a matching body.

Wouldn't a monopod be the answer to use within crowded areas?... I mean, other than using a quick shutter-speed. - The only thing that would still be difficult is a longer exposure, as it can still move side to side of course. But at least a monopod is something to stabilize and balance with. - It just doesn't stick out all over the place and you can walk with it straight up alongside your body.

A tractor doing a backflip... That sure would be awesome to see, no matter how it's done. For me, despite knowing I'll eventually wind up getting a tripod at some point, I'm not really a fan of them not because of their rigidity, but because it means another couple of pounds of gear hanging off of my back. Surprised you didn't mention how tripods have a bad habit of attracting a LOT of attention from various sources (police and/or security), and how quite a few places they're banned...

Question for the the Q&A video: i'm gonna buy the 80d soon Do you think i should buy it with the kit lens or a different one? I'm gonna be shooting landscape and portraits plus videos so i need one that is good for all of these and then i'll buy more lenses later 😊
@oneeyedphotographer
@oneeyedphotographer 6 лет назад
Ramy Kabalan I bought an 80D with the 18-135 USM lens announced at the same time. Àt that time I already owned a 6D and a lot of EF mount lenses. The USM lens focusses much faster than the STM version, it's quiet enough I can't hear it focus. You could also consider a 50mm STM lens for portraits and the 10-18 STM if you want to vlog.

From another Canon user's point of view (I am using a 70D and an EOS M): If you want to use a single lens for all of this, you want something like the Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM. A kit lens like the EF-S 18-55mm IS STM won't be good for portraits (widest aperture too narrow) nor video (aperture changes when zooming). The Sigma would be a good compromise, it also features an image stabilizer and is very affordable, although heavier than the kit lens. The other cons would be that the AF is noticeably loud when doing video work. The internal mic of the camera would definitely pick that up. Other than that, the already mentioned Canon EF-S 10-18mm IS STM and the Canon EF 50mm STM would each perform better for landscape or portraits respectively but you would end up missing the important focal lengths between 19 and 49mm. For photography I like ~22mm and ~30mm best on Canon APS-C cameras. You would also want to use something in that area for general purpose filming. I love my Sigma 30mm DC HSM Art f/1.4 and use it most of the time, but I also own a couple of other lenses (and also still the aforementioned 17-50mm for when I want/need to be more flexible).

Jens Jakob The kit lenses don't do shallow depth of field very well at shorter focal lengths, but that doesn't make them bad for portraits. If you are working in a studio, you're likely working at F8-12 where there is no problem. Outside, look for an appropriate background and do environmental or semi environmental portraits. Most of the video I've been watching recently involves vloggers talking to their cameras or showing us where they are. Kit lenses are well able to do those. Like the kit lenses, the EF-S 10-18 and 10-22 have varying maximum apertures, it doesn't seem to bother the vloggers I see. As you say, the 50mm STM lens is a good but pretty cheap lens to learn about shallow depth of field.

Great video, as usual. Another reason for not liking tripods is that to get anything half decent costs as much as a camera!!! You talked about Gobe filters a little while ago. Are you still using them? Do you like them? (If me, Lee filters are just ridiculously expense - unless they give a huge discount to people on a pension that I don't know about!)

Really sounds like you need to use (or learn about using) a Manfrotto quick release plate. 1 Lever and your camera is off. It's also more secure than the arca swiss clamping mechanism.

I agree tripods slow you down but I think they are essential for landscape photography when you want maximum detail. IS and IBIS go close but aren’t a perfect substitute.

I've learnd two things today with your Video: First: It seems, that seagulls around London only attack tourists. Most likely they are trained to do so. Second: I've forgotten what it was while writing this comment. Thanks for not killing anyone around you with this "Devastating Tripod of Tridamnation" what would be a perfect unique item in a random roleplaygame (i would call PhotoRPG). - Kevin

I used to be pretty ok using a tripod now and then. Mostly for vlogging myself. But, now I am totally afraid to leave the house with one for fear that I might end up killing someone. Never thought of that. Hmmm....🤔😜 Anyone want to buy a lightly used tripod? It’s good for catching tractors do backflips. And, ...weaponry apparently. Owner takes full responsibility. 😉

Love your info and humor, but I would agree with even yourself on this one. Your made up story wasn't the real reason to hate tripods, I think the real reason to hate tripods is in your bags video..... carrying the damn things around is never easy, bags don't accommodate them, and injury by tripod to either yourself, the camera, or the tripod itself has to be the number one safety concern of photographers everywhere. It's like they have eight legs and not just three.
