Yes! A very good idea, Leon. Taking a multi-translation approach (in any language) has a lot of benefits to understanding something that wasn’t originally written in the language you’re reading it in - like the Bible.
I am studying entire bible now to get a clear understanding which I am not. I have King James Version because I read somewhere that other bibles were revised a lot of times to fit into preset times. Although after learning who king James really was maybe I shouldn’t be reading at all. I can understand at 50% only especially Old Testament since that language and meaning is impossible to translate. What is that you recommended as a best and most logical bible?
I once tried to read Robin Hood, and the book I chose was for some reason in the form of English at the time of writing. It did not go well. English changes over time, so re-translating to modern English would be expected, unless you want each generation to be able to read an English translation less and less.
My favorite translation is the ESV. It has the same literalist approach as the KJV but translates it using a modern understanding of English instead of the archaic olden usage found in the KJV.
The KJV is a revision of the Bishops' Bible. The Bishops' Bible is a revision of the GREAT Bible. The GREAT Bible is a revision of the Matthews' Bible.

This is a great explanation. My pastor does use KJV but I think he explains it well. If I were to just read it I would have to pay close attention to contexts to get the meaning. I like the NKJV. I don’t have an ESV but probably should get one. Thanks so much for explaining this. Language is so complex.
As a huge KJV fan, I loved the points you raised. The KJV sings to my heart but it isn't always an easy read. It requires pondering and extra leg work to get to an understanding. Now if you're the kind of person who enjoys study, that's wonderful. You'll gain such a lot. I agree though, understanding is key and language should not be a barrier. Personally, I think a great idea is to pick a complicated verse and read that verse in as many good translations as you can. You'll soon identify your personal go to translation. Thanks! Yes, "supernatural" claims and numerology stuff is common but almost completely baseless. Every cult and religion can find that type of stuff if you really want to find it, very rarely (if ever) is it grounded in anything that's either realistically falsifiable or doesn't have a paragraph of caveats to make such conclusions.
The King James is awesome but few understand all the meanings of the words used that have very different meanings today. There are some misconceptions some take away from the King James that are not taken away from other bibles. Thanks for sharing this important message. I started to see the mistakes people were making in the King James and I knew it was not the character of God in what they were concluding. It brought me to check the original text and translation and I see how people get confused and do not know they are confused.
you could get a KJV explained bible like I do. Giving definitions of those words we don't use in modern times. The NIV is scary! It leaves out many verses altogether! Go and look up Matthew 18:11 in the NIV. You won't find it!! Look up Matthew 9:3 where Jesus says"I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners TO REPENTANCE" The NIV took out TO REPENTANCE in the verse! In Corinthians 5:7 "Christ our passive lamb is SACRIFICED FOR US" In the NiV it took out sacrificed for us!! John 6:47 in the KJV says " verily verily I say unto you, he that believeth ON ME hath everlasting life. The NIV says "I tell you the truth, he that believes shall have everlasting life". Purposely leaving out ON ME!!! MY bro the NIV on many many occasions leaves out verses or parts of verses that point to JESUS AS THE SAVIOR! It takes his divinity away! I would look into it if I were you! There are many people breaking it down on RU-vid! This guy who made this video is part of the problem! Also the KJV is by far the most accurate translation of the ancient text and Dead Sea scrolls!! Just because something written less tan 50 years ago is EASIER TO READ doesn't make it a reliable source!!! The key issue is understanding what you are reading. What point is there reading a 400 year old translation where many words have morphed their meaning.
This is great. Though just one correction on the 1 Peter 3:16 quote reference. It's 2 Peter 3:16. Otherwise, I really appreciate your content & am grateful that it exists. I find your content so helpful & I would like to request (if you have the time & capacity) if you could please explore the argument about Biblical texts that were "written in context". I've found that sometimes when someone doesn't have an understanding about a verse that the answer, "It was written in context" & therefore not applicable in our present day is given & I'm not satisfied with that answer because who & what separates or decides what was written in context & what is still relevant? I feel like it makes the text ambiguous if that's the case. In some way, this also matches the argument that, the Bible was written over 2000 years ago & therefore no longer relevant & I know this is not the case.

A very good idea! Realistically the text of the OT between the KJV and modern translations is virtually identical. The issues pertaining to the KJV or not the KJV textually really fall in the discoveries of NT manuscripts. But I will add the subject to my list on potential topics!

I was a King James onliest for the longest time. The one thing I do love about it is the old English does compliment the poetic books like Job and Psalms. I used to memorize the psalms I got up to psalm 18, but you forget if you don't constantly practice. As I learned more about the original languages I realized how ridiculous KJ only is. The reason I believe people advocate KJ only is because most people can't learn both Hebrew and Greek. So having the KJ as the only bible is a very appealing position regarding if it is factual or not.
The King James Bible is of a higher literary quality than the extant Hebrew and Greek manuscripts. To approach the quality of King James English you need to go to Milton, Melville, Whitman, and a few others. Even with them they can't quite get there. Sorry , but you just don't have a literary sense (maybe you're a good plumber or electrician, and that's fine, but give it up on language).
The things I noticed in early Genesis, it doesn't translate "ha-adam" as "the man" but as "Adam" in chapter two. No one does it in 1:27 but the KJV doesn't do it in chapter two either. The first time he is called Adam is after the expulsion from the garden. In the flood account where Yahweh and Elohim say what they will do, two different Hebrew words are translated into the same English word "destroy", same with the word translated "die" I believe. Hebrew doesn't have many words. If different words are used the English choices should reflect it IMHO.
I use the NIV as my main Bible because it has a good mix of formal and dynamic equivalence. I sometimes use the ESV to compare verses with the NIV. The ESV is in a line of succession with the KJV, so the ESV has a lot of the KJV's poetic flow but in modern English.
Hello Wes I found your content because of Apologetics Canada and have recently been on a binge of your videos. As always it was a very good video. I'm personally an NIV kinda guy as if was my first bible and my church has been NIV as long as I've been attending.
Yes, I think the NKJV is fine. I still personally would advocate for the ESV, NIV, NLT or NET before the NKJV (for textual reasons), but you’re certainly right that the NKJV is a very readable option and alternative.
@@WesHuff NIV is not a good translation - in Ephesians - it does not translate 'walk' as walk. The word is used consistently throughout the text - except in the NIV. There have been a number of other glaring problems with NIV - most fixed now I admit - but for a ling time it was not the best. Eg older versions said that Gad killed Goliath?? An obvious error - how did that ever get in there?
I had Shakespeare in school, and so can get by with the KJV and I have several, but most of my Bibles are NASB, ESV, and NKJV; I also have 3 CSBs, and the NET as well. Like you, I don't recommend the KJV to anyone, especially if they've just started studying the Bible or complain it's too hard to read and they've been using the KJV.
The KJV is completely defensible from the perspective of text criticism, but that's not the important point. The important point is theological. Why would God create the Bible perfectly in the autographs, then allow it to become completely changed by the random forces of history? And humans can reconstruct the original using reason and text criticism? That's deism, not theism. The KJV English is much easier to understand than new translations. They just confuse it more. People can easily understand what "halt" means if they investigate a bit. We can understand the KJV uses archaic English. But if you have to decide between 50 different translations it's just more confusing. The KJV is a superior translation in every possible way. Name a single verse of the Bible which some modern translation does a better job. Forget about your version of "intelligibility." If we can google the word, then it's fine. Find a single verse in the entire KJV which has a wrong translation. I can find a thousand in any modern version and they'll admit it since they're already working on their next edition for more profits.

Here are two verses that modern translations does a better job with: Titus 2:13 and 2 Peter 1:1. The reason being that the KJV translators had not yet discovered the Granville Sharp Rule for reading Greek. Due to this the KJV translates Titus 2:13, “Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ.” In the original Greek, the words for “God” and “Savior” are joined by kai, and the definite article ho is only used once, preceding “God.” According to the grammar rule rediscovered by Sharp in the late 18th century, both God and Savior must refer to the same person, namely, Jesus Christ. However the KJV separates the two as distinct persons and therefore the strong emphasis on Jesus' divinity is not in this particular passage in the KJV where as it is clearly the intention of the author to emphasize Jesus' divine nature here. The same rule goes for 2 Peter 1:1, and likewise do to the lack of knoweldge of the ancient grammatical rule, they once again split "God" and "Saviour Jesus Christ." As for a wrong translation I'd say that goes to Revelation 16:5 where the KJV translators erroneously went with conjectural emendation of Theodore Beza of "who shall be" in juxtaposition with all three of the base TRs they were using (Erasmus' editions, Stephanus' update, and Elzevir's text) and all the Greek manuscript readings, which read "the Holy one."
@@WesHuff Titus 2:13 refers to the "great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ." This is referring to one person. There is nothing in English grammar that would lead me to believe this is necessarily talking about two different persons. Although you might argue there is some ambiguity here, it is removed by a close reading of the context. 2 Peter 1:1 has a variety of textual variants in Greek. There's no reason to assume your reading is correct. There's no reason to assume God wants to demonstrate the divinity of Christ in this verse. Throughout the writings of Peter, the word God is used referring to the Father and Christ is referred to as Son, Lord, and Saviour (1 Pet 1:2, 3; 2:5; 3:18, 22; 4:11, 14; 5:10; 2 Pet 2:2, 17). I'm not sure you're correct that "all" the Greek manuscript readings say "Holy One." It was certainly not the reading followed by Tyndale, Coverdale, the Geneva Bible, the Great Bible, or Mathew's Bible. As for the phrase "and shalt be," it is found in Elzevir's 1633 edition, so he updated it. Beza saw an error and acted wisely, following the preceding texts that contain this phrase (Rev 1:4, 8; 4:3; 11:17).

I do not recall that. I do recall they say their goal in translating the KJV, their "mark," was to make from the BIbles they used "out of many good ones, one principal good one, not justly to be excepted against."
There is no such thing as a King James Only controversy. There is only a “perfect Bible” controversy. KJV only people (such as myself) simply “dare” to believe that God kept His word to preserve His Scriptures. Side note, I used to be very anti King James. I thought it was antiquated and hard to read. Then about 5 years ago I decided to seriously study the Bible translation issue. What I discovered is that I had been wrong. When you actually take the time to research the issue you will see how the modern translation “bibles” have been altered in a way that absolutely DOES NOT honor God, specifically attacking the Deity of Jesus Christ, His sinless perfection, The Trinity, and many other critical areas of Christian doctrine. How most Christians think 100+ different versions of the Bible is “normal” is a mystery to me now that my eyes are open. Stop putting your trust in the “scholars” who have spent more time reading the writings of man than The Bible, and put your trust IN GOD and what HE HAS SAID about the Scriptures!
For God so loved the world... Where the current (primary) usage of "so" does not match the usage in the KJV. In this way God loved the world... would be a much better translation, and some (eg: CSB) do, but there are even those (eg: NLT) that are locked into a misreading of the KJV and translate it God loved the world so much, which is definitely not what the Greek reads!

As far as I'm aware if there is concern regarding the authenticity of the parables it probably wouldn't be textual but on other internal grounds one might hypothesize. All the available data concerning the existence or absence of the readings would be listed in a modern critical edition of the Greek New Testament. Both the UBS and the Nestle Aland would list the variances if they exist.

As a non-english man, Thanks be to God I clearly see that KJV is the perfect Bible for the whole world. God knew what will be the worlds language in the end times. Satan is subtly changing the Bible for the last 140 years. Also I use a version of 1584 Jurij Dalmatin Bible in my language - Slovenian and the newer versions are being corrupted subtly. The reason why newer translations aren't as good or even heretical is that they take away from the word of God. Mark 9:29 in kjv,nkjv,Young's Literal Translation and Geneva Bible all say "prayer and FASTING" when why the apostles couldn't cast out a boy's demon. All newer translations leave out Fasting which is taking away from God's Word. Beware of false translations

It depends on the manuscripts used, you have to remember that most modern Bible translations use much older manuscripts that the KJV translations didn't have because they weren't found until several hundred years after it was translated. The KJV isn't perfect, no translation is except the original handwritten books and letters.

Ooh, I think somehow I knew halt was limp, but I can't for the life of me think where I would have seen it...I am a bit of a book worm, but I don't regularly read books That old!
I studied all the differences between the modern translations and the King James The differences amount to about 700 scripture differences with about 150 major scriptures differences that deal with doctrine and I would prefer a new modern English version that is based on the majority text not the minority text. I get it that the KJV words are archaic and not really fitting for modern English vocabulary but the minority text that the modern translators are using has too many holes in it for me personally.
That’s fine, but there are about 1800 differences between the TR-base of the KJV and the Majority Text. So if your goal is to go with a MT-only source translation the KJV is still not your best bet. Also, portraying the modern eclectic text as the “minority text” in juxtaposition to the MJ is just not accurate. The base Greek text that modern critical editions of the Greek NT use is not the opposite or an outright denial of the MT but a text based on the weighing of readings from all of the textual data as a whole. Disagree with it or not, it’s not somehow a “minority text” in competition with the MT.
Also KJV was evaluated at a 5th grade reading level while other versions are evaluated at an 8th grade level or harder so …. Thee, thou, ye they aren’t difficult…
Nowhere do I highlight the "thees" and "thous," in my statement. I have no problem with those, and actually there are some modern translations (like the legacy standard Bible) that choose to bring back a few of the thees a thous. But if your methedology is reading level than the Message starts at a 4th grade reading level so maybe that's your best bet. Just FYI, as someone who regularly does translation work I'd put the KJV at closer to 12th grade realistically.

I admit that when I read the KJV Bible many times I have to read the sentence a few times to understand what it's saying and honestly that's frustrating when you're "trying" to learn the word of God... And when I express my thoughts to other people, they attack me saying KJV is THE ONLY true translation.... As if I am committing a SIN by using a parallel Bible to better understand what I am reading. I know a few friends who were saved and read the NIV and yet they still love The Lord and learned a lot by reading the Bible. I have seen so many Utube videos that say, ALLLLLL the other Bible's except KJV are corrupt in EVERY WAY.... And "if" we want to learn the Bible we need to pray that The Holy Spirit teaches us what the KJV is telling us... it is possible to read archaic kjv similar to how we read archaic hamlet using annotated hamlet like arden shakespeare hamlet. For archaic kjv, can read it in parallel with free kjv verse by verse commentaries easily found on the internet like jamieson fausset brown, adam clarke, albert barnes, etc.

Which would God prefer? The KJV Bible or the false bible versions that remove Matthew 17:21, Matthew 18:11, Matthew 23:14, Mark 7:16, Mark 9:44 and 9:46, Mark 11:26, Mark 15:28, Luke 17:36, Luke 23:17, John 5:4, Acts 8:37, Acts 15:34, Acts 24:7, Acts 28:29, and Romans 16:24? God promised to preserve all His words. You don't have an every word Bible if you refuse the KJV in English. Psalm 12:6-7 “The words of the Lord are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times. Thou shalt keep them, O Lord, thou shalt preserve them from this generation for ever.” God has promised to preserve His words. I must ask you, where is it? If it’s in any of the modern versions, then you call God a liar since the modern versions DONT include every word of God wherewith we must live by. The modern versions remove over a dozen entire verses, including matthew 17:21, matthew 18:11, Acts 8:37, Even context is changed in some cases such as Mark 10:24. Two bibles cannot both be the word of God and contradict each other. 1 Corinthians 14:33 “For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.” Even in Paul’s day, there were those that corrupted the word of God just as greedy companies are doing today with the copyrighted NASB, ESV, NIV. 2 Corinthians 2:17 “For we are not as many, which corrupt the word of God: but as of sincerity, but as of God, in the sight of God speak we in Christ.” There is a penalty of damnation to any who would remove the words in Revelation, of which 54 entire words have been removed from in the modern versions. Clearly if any candidate is to be the preserved actual word of God, its the King James Bible. The new perversions are NOT scripture and do not fulfill the promise that God had made. Easily debunked. Revelation 22:19 “And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.”
What if said verses were put in and the KJV translators weren't aware and now we know? What if you're premise is backwards and you're the one who's reading an expanded Bible version rather than what the original authors wrote?

Read the letter of Westcott and Hort. You’ll find in those letter in October 1860 the admission on the importance of altering the scripture in various places as to allow another theological teaching that would be present yet unaware to average Christian reader. They created the critical text which was the basis for the Nestle-Alan’s text, neither of which believes Jesus Christ rose from the death.

Pastor Steven Anderson has already done the research, the problem is not the English in KJV, the problem is KJV cannot be corrupted easily, I'm black African and understand KJV better than my own language because i want to learn and so far i have never met anything impossible, we need word for word translation, not the opinions of men. we rejected Catholicism for this reason. the difficult words story is a dud

entire passages are removed and altered in the NIV and these refer to the divinity of CHrist, Jesus.......the KJV may be the best book to learn the Gospels. Remember that trying to interpret a language that we do not understand leaves us prone to twisted and in-accurate translations and it is also worth mentioning that the Hebrew people rejected Christ because they were half blinded ... in short, some would argue that the biblical texts were not complete until we recieved the KJV
Your first claim is nonsensical and simply false. With all due respect, it reveals a complete lack of knowledge of the history of even English translations, never mind the biblical text as a whole. Your second assertion doesn’t hold much water with me, I have multiple videos on my channel where I walk through a biblical manuscript and sight translate it in its original language - I’ve been reading and teaching the biblical languages for a number of years now. You’re welcome to check those out. Third, I don’t know who those people are, but if that’s their claim then they’re probably ignorant of the public evidence and robust data pool re. the biblical text that has arisen within the last 200 years.
If the word is in the King James Bible then that word is not obsolete: the King James Bible is still the most read Bible. So if the word is still being used (and obviously it is as people are reading and speaking it) , then it's not dead. This guy has a devil , thus he's attacking the King James Bible.

@@Ben6Strings I think your answer gives away that you're not exactly aware of how we got our Bibles. I have no idea what is meant by manuscripts that are the "true line of Scripture." God has clearly preserved His Word, and one of the key ways that He has accomplished that is through the tenacious copying of the documents we now call the Bible over the last two millennia. At a basic level, the term “Septuagint” is typically used to refer to a collection of ancient translations of the Hebrew Bible along with various other Jewish Greek texts. It's more of a catch-all phrase than it is a specific document, so your use of it I think reveals that you're not entirely aware of how that term operates or what it really is. Likewise, Westcott and Hort did not produce a Greek "translation." There was nothing to translate, they were going from Greek to Greek.
@@WesHuff Septuagint is a term specifically used for the supposed 70 (or 72) men that wrote the mythical text. The story goes; they were put in separate cells, and wrote the entire OT by memory alone and ALL came up with the exact same thing. Surely such a divine encounter would have been mentioned in the NT along with other miracles and divine encounters. If you believe in a BC Septuagint then the only evidences for this Septuagint rely on this same story. Any current "Septuagint" hardly has anything to do with this supposed original Septuagint. They exist only to confirm something that doesn't exist so they can excuse the fact that they added to Biblical text- to validate their corruption (especially considering the Septuagint uses the Apocrypha as divine Scriptures as the Catholic church loves to do). The story of the Septuagint is a ridiculous myth. Also, when I say "true line of Scriptures", that's because God is NOT the author of confusion. He is the author of infallible Words. There is only ONE Bible, in different languages/translations. If that weren't true then there is no true Bible at all since they all contradict one another- sometimes saying complete opposites of one another. As for Westcott and Hort, excuse my loose usage of the word "translation". Their Greek New Testament was heavily reliant on Sinaiticus and Vaticanus which are corruptions, not to mention Sinaiticus is a blatant forgery (that is evident just by looking at pictures of it). You think your credentials mean something, even though I'm sure you highly disagree with many people with credentials. Credentials are irrelevant to spiritual discernment. As it pertains to the Septuagint you're confusing and conflating the story recorded in the Letter of Aristeas concerning the supposed process of the translation of the Hebrew OT, and what then resulted in the streams of Greek versions of said writings. I would agree that there is a component of exaggeration in this origin story, but that's entirely separate from the actual Greek versions of the Jewish Scriptures we find prior to the time of Jesus. We have multiple examples of both Septuagintal text in quotations from intertestimental literature as well as actual manuscripts from the Qumran collections. I also agree with you that there is only one Bible. The existence of translations doesn't negate this anymore than if you translated Shakespeare's Macbeth into every language on earth. There would remain only one Macbeth with translations of it just as there remains only one Bible with many translations of it. You're also correct that Westcott and Hort relied very heavily on Sinaiticus and Vatincaus, but modern critical editions of the Greek NT are not just updates of the W&H text. W&H got many things right but they weren't perfect and no modern textual critic that I know slavishly follows their lead. As for your assertions about Sinaiticus and Vaticanus, I'm assuming you're basing this on the idea that Sinaiticus is a forgery or copy from the hand of Simonides? This has no legitimate credibility and, with as much respect as I can muster as someone who has worked with both of these manuscripts first-hand, amounts to nothing more than a baseless conspiracy theory. Credentials may be irrelevant in some instances but of course not in all. We both need to de-mythologize academia as well as recognize that academic rigor is paramount to the pursuit of truth. Holding to anti-intellectualism is a dangerous downward spiral that will ultimately lead you very far, and not closer to, that which is true and good.

Type exactly "in", if your program is accurate it must include UPPER and LOWER CASE. There are 12,338 lower case, and 336 upper case. You should get 12,674. Type exactly "earth"........................................ it must specify LOWER CASE. You get 985 (If you get 987, it’s because of the EARTH in revelation, and Earth in Genesis). Type exactly "the"........................................... it must include UPPER and LOWER CASE. There are 17 with ALL CAPS, 62,173 lower case, and 1,851 upper case. You should get 64,041. Type exactly “Amen”……………………………it must specify UPPER CASE. You get 77. (If you get 78, it’s because of the lower case amen in Numbers 5:22). Genesis 1:1 and Revelation 22:21 are the verses where these four words come from. This is proof verses are inspired. Every phone has a calculator. I'm not totaling this for people who don't care. If your search program can specify what books of the bible you can search, specify only Genesis and Revelation: Type exactly “in” your program must include UPPER and LOWER CASE. You should get 767. @@WesHuff It is from the 1769 Authorized KJB, the 1611 patterns were still in their infancy. The Spirit was in the process of fine-tuning it... God didn't need 6 days to create the universe but chose it. There is no one on this planet that can convince me of it being silly, and I'm aware of one extremely minor difference from the 1769 too, ("spirit" is capitalized in the Cambridge and not in Oxford, or vice versa, but don't quote me on that because I'm only just learning about all this as of a year ago, but that's the differences we're talking about in the Authorized version) …the KJV2000 is not Authorized for ex. I have an authorized print that claims 31101 verses, yet doesn't tell me where it comes from, but i don't doubt it is God's word because of one verse. Course I could go online and start telling everyone that. Doesn't help, just causes doubt like when footnotes pointing out corrupt family of a few mss. However I know the program I use is from Cambridge and it counts every word, letter, upper and lower case, and mikes a distinction of every word variation. I have a list of every verse, vowel, consonant emailed from Cambridge, and my faith is greatly increased, and I love God's Word like I never would have without finding these patters. I don't think that's silly. I don't think everyone has to become math minded, but I had to cross the Rubicon and verify every thing for myself, because if it were true, I know what it would mean for my Christianity. It would mean every word written in it that condemned my willing sins is true.

Sure I'd agree with that to a point. As I say in the video: not all translations are created equal. I think that's true for translations like The Passion Translation (TPT) or the New World Translation (NWT). However, you'd be hard pressed to lob those types of accusations at the ESV, NLT, NET, or NASB, all excellent renderings of the original language by more than competent scholarly translation committees.
