I was a loose natural before I locd my hair. I used to think loose natural hair took a lot of maintenance. But that was before I realized all the maintenance I was doing to my natural hair, was basically fighting against how it is naturally. Hours long wash days, constant twist outs. None of it was necessary. It just seemed like that was the only way to make my hair feel/look "done". Once I started doing shampoo and conditioning and two cornrows right after I was done, it was amazing how little maintenance it took. Besides the cornrows (to keep it detangled) I started letting my hair do what it does naturally. Accept my coils as they are and accept my shrinkage without fighting it. After that, I no longer felt like it was high maintenance. The locs are on a whole different level as far as how little I have to do to it between reties. It's a dream! It's only been a little over a year, and I love them!!

Love your perspective! Our hair is as complicated as we make it. Our people in west Africa, majority of the time keep their hair braided or twisted or keep it short and leave it alone. We have over-complicated our hair here in the West. And yes I love how simple a loc journey is and even with my reties, I’ve learned to appreciate and enjoy the process.

Maintenance of loose natural hair is a ton of work! I got tired of having to do major work to my loose natural hair every single day. No wigs for me. Loc’d and love it so far. 3 months into my journey.

I love to hear that you grew in that kind of envoronment. I did not lol. I grew in an environment where our hair was not accepted and I got my first perm when I was 11! From there I went between per.s and braids and then eventually weaves. I big chopped my hair and went loose natural in 2019 and it was because I was sick of all thr stuff I was doing to be accepted. A lot of people arounf me hated it but I love it and I have never felt more beautiful so I will never go back to bondage. I keep my hair clean and moisturized and let it do what it wants to do. I do wear two strand twist sometimes and when I. Not doing that I just wear my afro. I am thinking about locing my hair but I just love my loose natual hair so much ❤ I never thought I would get to that place but here I am and I am so grateful I finnaly reached a place of self love and acceptance

Wow 11 is so young! It’s crazy how this idea of straight hair being prettier or more presentable still has an impact on black families so many years after slavery. And the fact that the chemicals are so harmful to our bodies. I definitely understand your attachment to your loose natural hair. As you should be! A loc journey is only enjoyable when you’re fully ready for the commitment to it. Our hair is gorgeous whatever natural style we wear it in anyway. ☺️

Personally I never thought about getting locs but when I decided to wear the hijab, maintaining my natural hair became so complicated. I couldn't moisture it the same way and I was lazy to style it (because i only wore my hair at home so no one could see it except my family). So 2 years ago, i've decided to do small locs and it was the best decision. My hair is healthy and it's growing under my hijab. I'm saving so much time. You're one of the persons who inspired me to get locs, thank you and God bless you.

Assalamu alaikum sis! I have locs as well and wear hijab!❤ Machallah, my hair is growing but I need to buy a hooded dryer to dry my hair faster after retwist. That way I can retwist more often. Have you tried any stain undercaps?

@@Naturallyme. Wa Aleykum Salam ! No I use regular undercaps because they work for me. Personally, I don't retwist my hair, I Interlock it so I don't have to use any product!

I have worn my hair loc'd for the last 12 years and wore a curly fro or light flat iron for a couple of years before then. I prefer natural and feel like myself so my microlocks/Sisterlocks are just appropriate for my busy lifestyle! Loose natural hair involved more work and would be too time consuming for me right now. It's difficult enough to fit my daily work schedule into my day. If my locs thin or go through another transition, I may have to just wear a short natural, but I couldn't do weaves or wigs. I'd be too hot!!

Love this! I definitely feel more like myself with locs. Finding a style that fits your lifestyle is a life hack for sure. When I chopped my locs and tried a wig, I was uncomfortable and super hot. It didn’t last more than an hour or two lol. Thanks for sharing 💕

Your Sista/micro locs are beautiful. My journey is 60+ years long. From natural when young to perms burning "all" my hair out due to texture. Onward back to natural, twist outs ....hours & hours. My daughter convinced me to try Sistalocs screaming mind you😅. Today, I would Neva change my hair. Rockn salt/pepper sista locs & loving everyday!!!

I grew out my relaxer ins 2015 as an experiment to see if I could manage my natural hair. I haven’t gone back. I wore blowouts and some braided styles etc for yrs until I loc’d my hair in 8/2021. I thought locs were a great way to enjoy my natural texture and also have styling and length options while keeping it simple. Thx for the video!

I grew up where once you finished elementary it was time for a perm (going into middle school). I hated it from day one. My scalp always burned even if I didn’t scratch. In 2004 after a job layoff, I returned natural and loved it. Got married in 2011 and my now niece had locs and I fell in love. 2017 I loc’d my hair and loved them for 5 years. Then, I began having trouble with my scalp. It was so bad, I combed my locs out. Found out I have psoriasis. Now I am rocking my curls again. I love my hair both ways so it’s a win win for me.

Hey! I grew up in Michigan. I currently live in Georgia. When I go home to visit, I don’t see people rocking their natural hair. If someone is natural, she is wearing it straight. In Georgia, on the other hand, natural hair is prominent. Locs and loose natural hair is represented. I love it!

I have hip/butt length locs currently, but honestly I miss my relaxed hair. Locs require so much maintenance for my hair. I don't have the energy to retighten regularly, so i just let it somewhat freeform. It is SO hard to wash and style my hair now. My lowest maintenance style was my mid-back and waist length relaxed hair. It was so easy to wash and style.

I'm getting lazy with my mid back length now, and will need to cut it to shoulder length or something soon, but I don't like the need for styling so much. The retightening of locs would have definitely been easier if I had 100 locs versus these used to be Sisterlocks cause once you surpass 350 to 500 locs, it is time consuming!!

Thanks for sharing❤️ That’s a lot of hair to maintain! I’m definitely not eager to get my locs long in this chapter of my life, but I am looking forward to having long hair in the future. I don’t have any experience with relaxer, but I do know that it also has to be topped up with your new growth. Have you considered cutting your locs shorter, maybe combining?

I’ve always had scalp issues since childhood and my hair simply NEVER has grown long in it’s natural state, even in a permed state it didn’t grow past my jawline; my scalp issues seemed less intense when I had my hair relaxed. Genetics: plays a HUGE part for me, I have naturally always had thin hairlines, my hair is fine and thin which made styling it impossible. I always went with short cuts which made my hair appear fuller. Then I deployed to Afghanistan and that’s when I went natural and I did the big chop, my hair flourished but I had no clue/time to figure how to maintain and style it in that environment. I came home still natural but my hair took a turn for the worse…I used the same products but they weren’t working. I started depending on hats and wigs and never figured out the best hair routine for my hair. Fast forward to today (10 years later) I’m still natural, my hair is 80% gray, I wear a hat every single day, my hair has not grown but is thinning even more now that I’m in that almost to menopause phase of life. On my maternal side female pattern baldness is prevalent during this menopause phase and it’s happening. I know getting rid of all my hair is the best thing to do but I’m not ready to be bald headed I’m only 52. I don’t want a wig cap and it’s too hot in the south for wigs. Getting micro locks or locs would only showcase my thin hair and expose my lack of edges. It’s a sad situation.

I had relaxed hair until uni (more so out of lack of knowledge) where I started wearing my natural hair until end of last year where I got Locs (+/- 10 years with my natural hair). I’ve been loving my microlocs. I experimented loads with my natural hair, and loved it, but I wanted a hairstyle where I could simply wear my hair without too much work which is how I came to microlocs. I don’t think it’s ever realistic to feel like hair isn’t going to require any maintenance but Locs maintenance definitely suit my lifestyle better today 😊 and YESSS, locs are feminine and romantic 🌸
