WHY I DRIVE A TOYOTA 4WD | StoryTIME with Andrew St Pierre White

My relationship with Toyota spans 20 years, from 1994 when I wrote my second book, to 2014 when Toyota South Africa finally handed over the keys of the Land Cruiser Troop Carrier. That was in South Africa and the conclusion of that and many projects. Since that time I have had no connection or link with Toyota in any country. But I look back on it as one of the best experiences of my professional career. And it moved me from being solely interested in Land Rovers, to a life driving all kinds of 4WD. And, I have to admit, why I now drive a Toyota Land Cruiser. This is that story.

As a Toyota Prado Series 90 driver, I must say this is an utterly underrated vehicle. Definitely not as tough as a well maintained Series 80, but easier to drive and maintain. Definitely a badass too. Tougher than the later Series 120 and 150 for sure. In fact, the later versions had the D4d 163cv engine that combined good fuel economy and reliability; a class on her own for sure.

Andrew, '12 hilux owner myself, I wanna say I have watched all your vids twice +. I also own prado 120. And I used to have Pajero as a company car. I hope to get my hands on 70 series eventually but those come rare and tremendously expensive where I live. In any case, 5 + years with hilux, fully built and didn't have to change a "bulb".

Andrew, I would like to share my experience with the 105 series. I have one with the 1FZ-FE engine (which is an excellent engine), but the fuel consumption is not that good as you said. My best average was 13.5L per 100km (7.4km per liter in Brazil's most used scale). That was before the front bumper with the winch, the snorkel and the roof rack. Now, I usually got between 18 and 16 in the city, and something about 15 and 16 at the road. Despite the fuel consumption the car is just spectacular. My next upgrade will be the diesel engine swap, most likely the MWM 6.07 Sprint (I belive that some Ford F250 in South Africa came with that engine). Here in Brazil the Land Cruiser - exept the Prado - are extremely rare vehicles, that's one of the reasons I will not sell my car and buy another one with the 1HZ. Thaks for sharing the video with your experience. Greetings from Brazil.

The immobiliser failure is a well known issue on 1HZ 'cruisers in Australia as they age. The cheapest fix is to bypass the immobiliser when they fail... which I had done on my HZJ105 when it happened to me ... (The only people in Australia who drive Landrovers are ex Pat Poms or South Africans who do not know any better :) :) )

Your stories are always so fascinating! Thanks for taking the time to chat about your experiences with these various companies. If you were based in the US would you still opt for one of Toyota's models (Tacoma, 4Runner, Land Cruiser)? Or would you seek a different model from a different manufacture? Thanks!
@4xoverland
@4xoverland 6 лет назад
Very good question. I am not loyal to Toyota more than I think that they make some very good cars and trucks, fit for my purposes. But in the US, I fancy some of the Dodge products. The Ford 150 Raptor looks brilliant. One thing is certain. I would not automatically head for the Toyota showroom as my first choice.

thank you Andrew, I agree Toyota has a lot of great people, The US arm has the same issues the true enthusiast's are not there in the corporate structure any more. Just wish they would sell the 70 series in the US, but our crazy government won't allow it.
@d1sturb3d119
@d1sturb3d119 6 лет назад
Its all regulation issues. I'd love to have a D4d. Loved the one I had back home. Have a V8 GX470 now. Gas guzzler but the DNA is still alive. The enthusiasts are around but they're being stifled by the bean counters. TRD's on top of that hold their value so even in the used market, the trucks are extremely expensive. Worth it but expensive.
@MichaelRCarlson
@MichaelRCarlson 6 лет назад
See how many enthusiasts are left once we have self driving cars. I'm truly dreading the day.
@d1sturb3d119
@d1sturb3d119 6 лет назад
Why? Self driving cars have their place to get rid of shitty drivers. My understanding is that in order to improve transport you will have sections of freeway where only self driving vehicle are allowed so there can be an increase in speed and no variances in driving. Enthusiasts can still drive. Just not in certain areas. We'll all be better for the fact that it'll be safer
@mattmattmatt131313
@mattmattmatt131313 6 лет назад
You'll see the day when they come for your keys too. First the freeway lanes, then some lanes in the city(like with buses), then they'll close the city centers off,... All enthusiast vehicles will become very specialized, very niche and therefore too expensive for most ordinary people. No more +200hp $25k hothatchbacks based on your moms grocery-getter car made in their millions,... In the end they'll just ban human driven vehicles out of existence from public roads...Better start building your own race track today.
@d1sturb3d119
@d1sturb3d119 6 лет назад
You're certainly not wrong. There are quite a few cities that want to do that. Sadly they do not have the infrastructure or vision to cope and would rather ban than solve. That is going to be truly sad. For the most part though Self driving cars still can't cope with inclement weather. There's still some hope but who knows. Personally I don't think all driving will go away but there will definitely be non human areas for sure

Fantastic story, thank you for sharing. As far as your fuel consumption to George and back, my 2 cents worth having had a similar situation with a modified Volkswagen- cruising at 140km/h and above, you are in a rev range where the engine can make use of the flowed head, modified camshaft profile etc. and actually “breathe”. The increased power and subsequent improved efficiency require less throttle to do the same amount of “work”.

I remember as co-founded the Land Cruiser club back in SA, Andrew having a minor forum spat with me when I pointed out that Land Rovers were excessively 'interesting, this was around 2003-2004'. His later run in with Mitsubishi over his unbridled honesty, was perhaps karma. Glad to see he's come around to the Toyota for overland travel. Anyway, Andrew's doing good work in the Antipodes and I rarely disagree with his advice and perspective. BF Goodrich appears to be a reasonable sponsor and are - arguably with Coopers - THE go to 4x4 tyre.

What do you think about 4x4 overland-type camper vans; e.g. a Merc Spinter, VW Crafter or their smaller cousins like the Toyota proACE, VW transporter. They seem to be pretty capable (obviously not as your Toyota) but for a family of four they appear more convenient for conservative off roading. After all you are carrying your family and your house :-) There are some impressive conversions out there. Maybe you can pass some comment. Carry on the good work.

The 1KZTE engine was a good engine, but comparatively speaking it had a few more issues, mostly head issues, broken valve guides, that sort of thing. It was a somewhat old design too, indirect injection. But Toyota tends to do things like that... keep older designs around for a long time and "properly" develop it :-) Somerset West huh... That's my home town.

The fuel consumption of the 105 makes perfect sense. My '97 Cruiser (1KZ-T engine with an Intercooler added in front of the radiator and a chiptune) drinks 18 liters on 100km below 95 km/h, and 11-13 above it. I have to be in Overdrive and keep the revs below 2000 to achieve that.

I'm also a diesel mechanic. There was no need to jack up and turn the wheel. .. After removing the glow plugs, you could just swing the motor over with the starter, and all water would have been ejected much quicker. The motor wouldn't start of course, as without glow plugs, there's no compression. Mind you, you were lucky you could get them out, as they can get pretty stuck, and break off. Then you're also stuck, as their hollow. Again no compression.

I've only had Daihatsu 4x4's for 30 years. Toyota had 1/3 of the company's shares until 1999...from then on it became a subsidiary of Toyota. Main Daihatsu real offroaders were the early F-20's Taft petrol with Toyota 12R 1600cc engine and, F-50/55 diesel with Daihatsu 2.5l and 2.8 l engines. Around 1983 came the Rocky/Fourtrack/Rugger with Toyota 3Y and 4y petrol engines, Daihatsu 2.8l Diesel engines including turbodiesels and in swb and lwb and other versions. A special and beautiful Rocky F-300 was developed mainly for US market and an Italian designer renamed the Rocky Bertone Freeclimber installing 3 types of BMW engines for the luxury European market. The other classic is the sporty Feroza with a Daihatsu 1.6 l 16 valve engines. All of them tough and reliable, which is what is needed when overlanding or heading to the wilderness. The Terios models are more of a soft offroader sold in some countries as Toyota Rush. Cheers and hope you check out this amazing and underrated japanese quality brand.

It would seem your Toyota dealership that ruined your relationship with the brand have taught SEAT dealerships in the UK. They’re all polite, kind and want to kiss your arse when buying a vehicle but come to the service or warranty work and oh my god, they are shit. Uncooperative, unprofessional, unkind and unwilling. When my lease runs out I’m shot of them. Bloody hopeless. Fantastic video as always Andrew. Kind regards to Gwynn. Stay safe and well. Greetings from Cumbria in the UK.

Don't know how this popped up on my news feed but l lived in Zimbabwe and Sud Afrika and owned a hi Lux bakkie. Driving through Botswana on the corrugated roads to Bulawayo via plum tree Botswana we met a man in a saville row suit selling oranges. .

Personally l think you should find a genuine Toyota dealer who knows the value of great P.R. Your assessments of these vehicles should be highly regarded and utilized in the 4x4 car sales arena. Today on TV we see such pretend adverts for various brands and models, but none of them truly do the real thing. Rephrase your wording a tad could see you in a new vehicle by xmas with bells on

I love documentaries on all types of things and from alotta sources like BBC and Discovery. One thing i like though, this guy i can just sit down and listen to his stories and experiences and it just transports me back to when i used to listen to BBC documentaries just from the radio.

Thank you for the inspiration! I'm a 20 year old danish guy with roots in Uganda. Last week I bought my first 4x4 vehicle here in Uganda together with my dad and a friend. Because we all live in Europe and don't come here to often we didn't want to throw to much money. Therefore we ended up with the 90 series Prado with a 1-KZ and 5 speed manual. We have already been to Kenya for safari and man I love the vehicle. Looking forward to be able to upgrade with necessary equipment in the future!

I have only owned two Toyota Landcruiser Troopcarriers. Bought my first one in 1980, one of the first HJ47 2H Troopies into Australia. My son killed that one 17 or so years later. Bought another one soon after and have been driving that ever since. So I have owned Troopcarriers since 1980. Best all round truck ever.

Man I love your stories, in Northern Kenya landcruisers are the final word in longevity and ruggedness. They rarely break down and they go just about anywhere you can point them.

Toyota don't need you to help them sell a commercial vehicle that the masses don't have an interest in... however, imagine if they gave you a 200 series or the new 300 series.

Traitor ! hahaaa We all grew up with Landies , loved them , but when it comes to everyday abusive usage , in areas where your vehicle is the link between life and death , and getting someone to a airstrip or hospital on time , use a Toyota!

I’ve owned a 1995 HZJ80 series GX for the last 13 years, it’s my daily drive and I just love it, on asphalt and regular weekend off-roading in the mountains, Cruiser grin every day. And BTW, the troopy you sold in the UK came to visit me in România this August, along with 4 other 80s from the UK. I was mightily impressed with the troopy camper conversion, excellent work and the truck is in good hands and still going strong. A little plug please for the landcruiserclub.net forum, the friendliest forum on the inter-web... :)

I'm new to your channel, I have never owned a 4x4 but I do want one. I have a great live for Toyota after having owned a Celica GT gen 6 and a GT-Four, both were awesome. I have researched LR Defender 2's but put off by their issues, I only considered one because they are cheap. I would love a Tundra but they're US only, Hilux's cost the earth and Landcruisers do nothing to the gallon, so what's a guy to do? I could listen to your stories for days on end, you tell them so well! Maybe in should move to wherever you live so I can hear more in person over a long cool drink with you, that'd be very nice in deed.

I have no doubt that the mods you have done are legal and safe. In contrast Police in QLD are now prosecuting dodgy mods to 4x4s. Unwary owners have been caught out and heavily fined.
