Ahana, thank you so much for sharing your story. I graduated from Imperial in 2019 in an Mech Eng, and my experience was very similar to yours. And I had friends in the physics department, and it’s far more difficult to what we had in our department. I am glad you were able to get internships and get ultimately launch a start up. Good Luck!

I completely share this experience. I am in my second year of physics at Imperial, and when you were talking about your first year, I just kept nodding. Falling behind, impostor syndrome, anxiety about the tutorials, no extracurriculars, barely passing the subjects... Somehow I made it to my second year. During the summer I made a study plan that would help me keep up, but once the term started, I was again in this enchanted circle of trying to keep up with coursework and then falling behind on lectures and problem sheets. This took a big toll on my mental health and now, during revision period, I am not really motivated to revise for the exams as I know, that no matter what I do, I will barely pass (hopefully). And then it's especially hard when people start bragging about their grades and how easy the exam was. The only thing that is pushing me to do something is that the summer is coming along and I'm going to be doing an internship (not in the field of physics) and then I only have one more year of barely surviving to get my BSc. It was very comforting hearing your story, thank you.

I'm sorry to hear this, but am glad my story brought you some comfort. The degree is super tough, and the environment/ culture really didn't help me. Just know that once you've made it through, things get so much better! Hang in there, and remember just how much you've achieved by persevering - that's such a valuable skill, especially to learn early on in your career :)

I’m an international student from HK who has a conditional offer for msci physics for imperial college london and I share the same fears that my math abilities are way below UK A-level students’. So your story is slightly worrying for me😅 but im still excited as ICL is my dream school and im just waiting for my final exam results and hoping i can meet the conditions to get in, as this year seems to be one of the more competitive years. Anyways, great video and i wish you good luck in your career.

Not all IB/ non-A-level students felt this way! Many of them thrived and went on to pursue academia and are doing great. Just my experience that I struggled a bit. Congrats of the offer and good luck for your exam results!! Thanks for your kind wishes :)

It would be funny but so fluent!!! how can you be this much confident and fluent while speaking??

It's weird seeing how accurate this is to my experience. I'm currently a 1st year at Imperial doing physics and I find it tough. Some lectures are extremely difficult to understand and I have no idea what's going on. I have others that are ok but then the questions make no sense. I really hope I don't fail let alone achieve a first or 2:1 etc... I really hope it gets easier or at least manageable.
@AhanaBanerjee
@AhanaBanerjee Год назад
Good luck with everything! It's totally normal to find it tough - most people do (even if they don't say it). It will take some time to settle in and get used to the level, but I'm sure you'll do great and don't hesitate to get in touch with me if there's any way I can be helpful as someone who has gone through it.

@@AhanaBanerjee thanks for replying! I have one question, how did you revise? I’ve asked some years above and all they say is “past papers and problem sheets” is that really it?
@AhanaBanerjee
@AhanaBanerjee Год назад
@@trystar-sl1mi yep, imo the best thing to do is start by trying all the problem sheets (and revise content accordingly, based on where you get stuck/ holes in your knowledge), and then grind out past papers. If I remember correctly, for most courses, past papers go back to 2009, and you should do them all at least once before exams

@@AhanaBanerjee ahh I see. Also, I’m a bit unsure about physics currently. I’m not sure if it’s for me. Unlike you, I didn’t go into physics to be a scientist. I went in with the mindset I wanted to go into IB/consulting. What’s your opinion? Does it require a genuine interest to do well? At the end of the day I don’t want to graduate with a 2:1 or below otherwise I wouldn’t stand a chance for postgrad or being recruited at an IB/consulting firm
@AhanaBanerjee
@AhanaBanerjee Год назад
@@trystar-sl1mi I actually made a video on this! I secured internships + jobs in IBD and consulting. You need a 2:1 or above (candidates with a 2:1 are not at a disadvantage as compared those with firsts), and a lot of people from physics at imperial end up in these jobs

Hello, may I know which math IB did you take? How come it doesn't cover differential equations? I thought Math AA HL covered that and beyond.

I did IB HL Maths (I don't know what AA is/ it wasn't offered during my time). We learnt basic differentiation and integration, but no differential equations

I mean, you still have a bachelors, so you didn't waste your time. Besides you left to start a business which is a valid reason (look at Bill Gates, Zuckerberg, Google's founders etc.) My favourite quote is from the late Stan Lee: "If you have an idea that you genuinely think is good, don't let some idiot talk you out of it. Whatever you do, give it your best shot and you'll be glad you did."

Any tips for getting Spring weeks or summer placements at investment banks ?
@AhanaBanerjee
@AhanaBanerjee Год назад
1) Be sure to submit lots of applications - I did around 40 every summer 2) Ensure your CV includes any past professional experiences, and a line or two about what you did (try to also put in some keywords around transferable skills) 3) Speak to people from the company before applying. Cold messaging on linkedin normally works (again, some people won't respond so you need to make sure you reach out to enough people. You can even ask them what makes their firms unique, and share this insight on your application.

@@AhanaBanerjee thank you so much. So for spring weeks or summer placements we have to apply as early as the summer before ?
@AhanaBanerjee
@AhanaBanerjee Год назад
@@161BMW For spring you'll need to apply Oct/ Nov/ Dec and I think Jan onwards for summers. I could be wrong as this was maybe 3 years ago for me now :)

@@AhanaBanerjee The most interesting bit about you submitting 40 applications is your mindset ("I just need one application accepted, so I'll throw them into the wall and see what sticks.") instead of a failure mindset ("Any application which is not accepted represents a personal failure of mine, since it shows I'm an imperfect being."). I wish I had your kind of mindset early on! Anyway, in the last 10 years I progressed a lot in life experience, so I learned some things, which is a reason to be grateful. I talked to you today earlier in Twitter. I wish you success! 😊 Kind regards from Brazil.
