Why I enlisted in the USAF. Is my degree useless? In this video I give a quick account of why I chose to join the military later on in my life rather than earlier in my life. I discuss why I enlisted in the Air Force instead of commissioning as an officer. I also talk about some of the mistakes I made when talking to recruiters, my job in the Air Force and my rank when I joined. I signed my contract as an enlisted member in Sep. 2019, I've been in for almost 2 years now and it's been interesting to say the least. This is my second video, I now there are a lot of "ummm's" & somethings that could've been edited out but this is a new journey for me & I'm still learning. I enlisted in the AF in 2016 (age 29) as a Pharmacy Technician with a Bachelor’s in biology (immigrant from Jamaica, wasn’t a citizen at the time), deployed to Afghanistan in 2020, got off active duty in 2021 and switch to reserves. Got accepted to Pharmacy school in 2021, commissioned through HPSP and going back to active duty as a pharmacist in 2024. Nothing wrong with enlisting with a Bachelors (I learnt so much that propelled me to go to pharmacy school). Just always have a goal and stick with it. The AF (military in general) has various opportunities, so work with what works for you. For example, I know a few people who enlisted with a bachelor’s, did a year and a half on Active duty and then went to nursing school through NECP or some who went to PA school through IPAP. Then again, I’ve enlisted with a few who plan to do their entire career as an enlisted, so everyone will not have the same goal, so just work with what works for you. On the other hand, if you didn’t get to commission while on active duty, you can always get out, use the GI bill and then apply to commission through a civilian program. Many roads can lead to the same destination.

Going reserve to active duty enlisted to officer is not as seamless of a process as going active duty enlisted to officer or even reserves then commissioning. It also helps to have your leadership backing you as you’ll need their endorsements to commission. All of the programs you mentioned I’ve researched but they are not what I want to do, nor what I have degrees in. I filmed this video & I stick by what I said. My time in the Air Force will be brief, but thank you for taking the time out to type this comment.

I don't know what things are like now but when I was an Air Force Recruiter 82-86, it was nearly impossible to get in with as an officer unless the degree was something with a lot of math and science. Doctors and Nurses with 4 year degrees were always in high demand. Engineers were also in demand but to a lesser extent, unless they qualified as pilots or navigators. Even in the 80s we turned a lot of people away with non-technical degrees like psychology, political science, literature, etc. And most people with a degree didn't want to go enlisted, and I can understand that. The Air Force has a lot of officer positions that don't require a technical degree but most of those positions are filled by people that come in through ROTC, or the enlisted ranks that received their degree while serving, or came in enlisted with their degree. If my memory is correct, I only had one guy go in enlisted with 4 year degree. He had a degree in English from Brown University of all places. He didn't care because he realized he wasn't getting far with his degree and even more so I think he wanted some direction in life. The last time I heard from him was after he arrived at his first duty station with Base Historian position. I don't remember if he went to Tech School or went direct duty. Anyway, he was happy and that always makes a recruiter feel good. I only remember one person in four years that contacted me that was not happy, although there may have been others that were, that I never heard from. This guy was unhappy because he went in under the General aptitude area and received a job as a cook. I wouldn't have been happy with that either, but it happens. I don't think anyone that does go in doesn't gain something by it. I enjoyed my 24 years and would gladly do it again. One thing I failed to mention is you have a non-technical degree and can convince a recruiter to let you take the AFOQT and score really high they might find something for you as an officer. Again, I was in a long time ago and that might not be an option. I hope this helps someone considering an Air Force career.

Mental health is a huge issue in the armed forces. Being told my degrees in psychology are useless while I’ve witnessed military members & their family members struggle & pass up on opportunities to obtain help out of fear of being kicked out or reclassed (if they’re lucky). It shows a huge lack of misplaced judgement on the individual’s who get to make up those ridiculous ass rules on which degrees are seen as progressive & highly valued over others. If I held a degree in basket weaving then cool, I understand. The high value degrees are great & obviously help to put you in a better situation but I didn’t go for one of those. But honestly what do I know🤷🏽‍♀️I’ve only served 4 of my 6yr contract & went to school for 6+ years to study mental health & its processes. Maybe things will change by the time I’m out. Who knows. My current job in is okay & has some decent perks but I know what I want to do and I’m taking steps to get there rather that be in or out of the military. Also thank you for the information.

This video was super helpful. Just met with a recruiter yesterday. I have a bachelor’s degree. They mention coming in as a E3. I would go the reserves route and do the 6 week training in air transportation. Just to get started. I’m 35. Was an athlete all my life so I believe I can handle the training. Im training now to get in better shape. I’m passionate about serving others and is very competitive. It’s a journey for the long game for me. The benefits is a huge part of my motivation as well as the career opportunities. Currently I run my own company, trucking company which I could set up to run itself for the 13.5 weeks of training. Lastly, I plan to commit in about 4 months. Let me know if you have any other resources I should tap into.

Yes, you can come in as an E-3 if you have a degree, so many college credits (15+ credits or more), &/or 2 years of JrROTC from high school.

I’m at a tough spot, I have my associate’s degree in general studies, and a bachelors in literature, that I gained in 2021 at the age of 28, I’m thinking of applying as an officer. But I’m hesitant. I’m 30 years old now, and have to bring my weight down but I’m always looking at the realistic outcome of what if I don’t get in.

This may be coming late but anyway…. You *MAY* qualify for E3… who knows 🤔 your ASVAB will reveal your strength and weaknesses. And if you make up your mind to join, try to look into other careers - meaning take another degree. GIB is for you.. use it. About your health and body, basic training will demand a lot from you, I will highly suggest to get that in order before meeting any recruiter.

Thank you for your service 🙏🏿 ❤️. And thank you for your video. I majored in psychology also and going through the process of joining as a reservist also. I'm looking into the emergency management if I'm not able to get into mental health. While in BMT and tech school do you receive BAH?

Good luck on everything. Yes you will receive your BAH, BAS, along with your base pay. Ignore the part where they say you’re being paid as an E1 in BMT (unless you are an E1 when you sign) Reserve & Guard get their actual pay in BMT. I enlisted as an E3 & got paid as an E3 during DEP, BMT & tech school.

Hi thank you for the video I have bachelor degree in computer engineering and I’m thinking of joining been debating between officer and enlisted and between active duty and reserve I’ve heard it’s difficult to go from enlisted to officer once in as active duty. And a little less difficult if you are reserve. Any advice?

Talk to a line officer recruiter in the Air Force & Space Force. You have a degree they like. As far as active duty vs reserves it really will depend on what you want out of the military. If I could go back, I’d go active duty & really push for an officer slot. The transition from E-to-O is difficult if you don’t have your leaderships support & guidance through the process. But that’s been my experience so far.

This is my story too. I had a BS in Psychology and the recruiter told me my degree was BS. So I enlisted, have tried to become officer several times over time. Still enlisted 17 years later.

Hey.. truth is bitter even though everyone is welcome, there are certain degrees that is of no use to airforce. I’m US Army (active) and this video came on my radar because I’m planning to start a RU-vid advising people who want to join any of the military branch. If budget for defense as a whole is huge, let’s think about what the funds is going to.. and what it will focus on. That been said, it’s important to do something *already planned for* if not, they are not readily elated to accept

I just started watching the video but I got my bachelors in 2021 and here I am in 2024 feeling so lost and being held back from getting a better job and I don’t know what to do. My whole family wants me to join the Air Force but that’s such a huge commitment and I don’t know if that’s the best way to go 😩😩😩😩😩😩

Honestly you will not be guaranteed a better job in the military but a job. The financial stability is there, as well as the opportunity to constantly grow & promote to the next rank. But it’s not a decision to be made lightly. The military will change your life and test you in ways you didn’t know possible. Throughly think through it, meet with more than one recruiter to get answers to your questions & reach out to people already working in the field you like to, if you decide to join. Get as many answers to your questions but once you sign that paper it’s not an easy decision to undo.

I get so tired of being uncertain about everything in my life right now that the military really seems like my best and only option. Hi, my name is David. Your video was very helpful and gave me somewhat of a guidance. I was hoping to ask for some advice. I recently graduated with my BA in biology. I am currently working with a Navy medical recruiter and in the process of going through the HCSP for PA but am afraid that I won’t get into PA school. I am honestly trying to figure out what to do next and to have a back up plan if I don’t get in. I want to serve in the medical area but I am in between Navy and Air Force. I really want to go into a commission officer program but I have no clue where to start. All I know is scholarships and ROTC programs to get into the commission officer programs. I would really appreciate your advice and guidance.

So I’m already in as an enlisted person but I don’t want to continue working on the medical side in the military. I’ve reached out to line officer recruiters & started studying to take the AFOQT to start the commission process. The steps I would take to become an officer may differ slightly since I’m already in and would be considered prior service member. I would suggest you weigh out each option & really commit to the one that calls out to you more. If ROTC is the best way to get in, use that. Be relentless in your pursuit. It’ll happen for you.

I agree with her assessment of services that the USAF has a better quality of life for their airmen than other services. Perhaps the new Space Force will also be desirable .

I just graduated with a bachelor's in Business Administration and want to join the Air Force. I am 26 years old and don't know what to do because I am in the same position as you. My partner is not married yet, but we have built great things & don't want to lose that. If you could return to your decision in 2019 and put yourself in the same position, what would you do in this case? or how would you join now? any jobs suggestions ?

If I could go back and have a complete re-do of my whole process with joining, I would absolutely push harder for an officer slot or join the navy as an officer with the bonus they were offering me at the time. I would’ve also asked more questions about the job I was assigned when I settled on going in enlisted. I didn’t push hard enough for what I wanted, yes the military has needs & those come first but I shouldn’t have allowed people to tell me all my hard work in undergrad was wasted effort (it absolutely was not). You have one life & you have to do what’s best for you, not someone else or another entity. Ask all the questions, to more than one person and with the information you’ve gathered make the best decision for you.

Before you sign any contract to join… *get married first* You will come back to this post in 2yrs to thank me. Enlist as active duty and if you want to do another degree, choose a good MOS that you know is best for you. And if you want leave active duty for the officer route.. feel free. PS: I’m relating military to Airforce… they are almost the same And finally.. your basic training period and all other steps is a time you and your partner need to be decisive on.. it’s a tough time but worth it. I’m not going to sugarcoat it for you… couples break apart during this period but if you guys mean business and truly love but sacrifice for each other… the benefits outweigh the sacrifice.

In the regular Air Force you really don’t get to choose your job … in the reserves do you get to choose your job if it is open at your local base?

If your recruiter is a decent human being and let’s you know your options, yes. I didn’t get to see a list of the jobs I qualified for. My recruiter chose a random medical job for me b/c I didn’t want to be in munitions systems🙃

My experience over the past 4+ yrs has not been great. My first year & a half, I was excited to be in & learn my job but leadership, peer groups, & your overall outlook will determine a lot. Unfortunately for me, my leadership has been shitty & peer groups unhelpful at both bases, so my overall outlook shifted. You may get great leadership but you won’t know that until you’re really in it. I’m just enduring until I get out, which sucks b/c now at the very end stages of my time in, there’s been some changes to leadership & I like the people in the top positions now, but it’s too little to for me. I hope your experience is 10x better than mine. Take advantage of every benefit while you’re in too!

In your recent video you mentioned how your current leadership (black females) has made a significant impact on your views and understandably so. Question~ I’m looking at aerospace medical service as a reservist (not in yet, just started talking to a recruiter) but I haven’t heard a lot about an AET because when you look at aerospace medical service it doesn’t talk about sere training or flight school? Is aerospace medical service kind of an umbrella for different jobs? Or how does that work?

Hi Nicole, AET is under the 4N0X1 umbrella as X4N0X1 (which is air evacuation) which is usually slotted for ANG & AFRC. It’s a rare career field on the Active duty side of house. It’s technically an SEI that’s attached to our AFSC already. Which is why we have to complete additional trainings (SERE, Water Survival, Emergency Parachute & Flight school) before we’re fully qualified to do our jobs.

No problem, I want to be as helpful as possible b/c I could not find videos on this job at all before I left. I will say with AET we fall until a grey area, we’re not 100% medical (hospital medics) & we’re not 100% typical aircrew. That’s not a bad thing. We get the best of both worlds without fully belonging to either. If that makes sense. That’s how it was explained to me once.

SERE is a one of a kind experience & more mental than physical (at least it was for me). You couldn’t pay me any amount of money to go back. I have a video on my experience & what you’ll need, if you haven’t seen it yet. I’m set to go to flight school at the start of 2022 & I will make a video on that experience too. If I can make it through, you can make it through the additional trainings too. Mind over matter! You got this!

If you’re coming in on the enlisted side, and you’re a little older than your peers, just know it is absolutely wild, going through basic military training and technical school with people who are 18-25yrs old. I was about ready to pull my hair out toward the last two weeks. I’m very introverted & I run from drama, so there were like 3 people I could tolerate while going through all of that. If it’s something you absolutely want to do though, go for it, but don’t let recruiters bs you. Retention rates are so low right now, you could probably get a bonus and the job of your choice🤷🏽‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️

Hi Desha, what was the process like with child custody? Did you have to give over your rights? Can you touch on that. It’s my biggest struggle with coming to terms with. I know some branches have their own processes

I didn’t have to go through that process so I don’t want to miss inform you. I have sole custody of my child. I signed a special power of attorney while I was away just in case something happened to me, but I was (am) still my child’s legal & sole guardian. The USAF’s legal team is really good at what they do, from what I’ve heard.

I have a BA in Psych with 9+ years of experience working in administration. I am interested in joining the Reserves. Idk if I want to go the MFT or PSY'D route but I would love to see what options are available. Regardless, of what role we choose as Reservists do we go to OTS or BMT?

When I initial joined with my BA in psychology I was told the AF wasn’t looking for that. They wanted folks with their doctorate. You’d have to talk to a recruiter and see if that’s changed. But the folks who run the psychology department/program are civilians with enlisted mental health techs working under them. I talked to a psych nurse two years ago who came in as officer thanks to the nurse portion of her degree but different bases may have different requirements. It’s worth checking out if you want to join. But enlisted will go to BMT, officers will go to OTS regardless of you going in active duty or as a reservist.

I’m currently active duty admin & I have my B.A. in Spanish & a masters in social work but no clinical license. I’ve been contacting my recruiters near my base & near my hometown to find out what other requirements I have to meet to commission. It’s been 2 months & no answer. Who else could I get in touch with to find out the requirements? I don’t want to miss out an opportunity to be an officer especially because I want to provide a better life for my family use my degree to be of service to the troops

You have to go in person & talk to recruiters. Let them know you’re ready to take the AFOQT & have a copy of your transcripts with you. They will bullshit you over the phone & via email. I would also go to more than one recruiting office.

I only did JrROTC in high school back in 2010 & enlisted years later. I’m not familiar with the ROTC process for individuals already in college. Whoever is over your ROTC program will have more insight. I don’t want to misinform you.

@@shujayethossain6554 if you’re in a program that’s essentially preparing you to become an officer & you’ll have a degree soon, why would you want to enlist? Unless you just want to be in the military asap, enlist then try to go E-to-O (enlisted to officer) but personally I would do the ROTC thing and go in as an officer but that’s based on what I’ve been through & what I would’ve like to have accomplished in the military. 🤷🏽‍♀️

Hi As a reservist, can you serve a whole month or so out of a year at once instead of going to drill for a weekend every month?

You can reschedule to complete at a different date, with advance notice to your leadership but no, you can’t do a whole month & not show up for the rest of the year. There are certain trainings, PT, medical appointments, etc… that must be completed on base.

The US Coast Guard is more likely to take a non-tech degree due to how often they deal with migrants, people seeking asylum, etc. And the public in general. The U. S. Coast Guard is a military branch btw.

If you already have those things, I highly suggest going in as an officer. Do NOT go in enlisted with a 4yr degree & pilot’s license.

@@DeshasCorner Thank you for your advice. Do you mind giving me reasons! As an immigrant, I fall short of citizenship qualification; therefore the only option for now is enlisting. I may have to wait for a year and then try and transition from enlistmemt into an officer. However, I am not sure the successful rate of such a decision.

You’ll want to speak with an officer recruiter, joining the military usually fast tracks the green card/citizenship process. But if you have those qualifications it would be a waste to go in enlisted (in my opinion).

1. Your Recruiter should be court martialed for his stupidity and for impersonating an NCO. Perhaps, a beat down will suffice. 2. Psychologists are experts at human behavior. This means that they are masters at communicating (all types of communications) coaching, counseling, discipline, facilitating, leading, managing, marketing, meditation, motivating and inspiring themselves and others. selling, self-control, self improvement, and solving problems. No other University degree can provide you with the knowledge and skills to win in combat and in the business world that a degree in psychology will. Research how many leaders, teachers, managers, lawyers, and medical professionals have a degree in psychology. I never wanted to secure any type of training certificate, but the U.S. Army, Pfizer, Inc., and the Universities that I taught at crammed them down my throat. Psychologist can devour books, learn new concepts, languages, and digital skills in hours. Psychologist thrive and seek conflict. Psychologist are Master Coaches and trainers. I have trained boxers, dancers, judokas, karatekas, and even firearm Instructors to become champions. As a U.S. Army Private I taught numerous NCOs from all branches how to improve their performance, leadership, and management skills. When the Army made me an officer I also trained officers from all other branches and many countries in leadership and management. Finally, I have also taught numerous professors with doctorates in business, medicine, law, etc. In summary, as a eternal student of human behavior I am able to help others become all they can be and stand up for those that cannot stand up for themselves. This has made planet earth my classroom and I have loved every minute of it. In conclusion, you are what you consistently do. Only you can conquer your thoughts and behavior. Thank you so much for the kind words. I know how important psychology is and the monumental role it plays in everyday life no matter what we do, what our title is, who we work for, etc… I’m my biggest advocate. If I want to pursue an officer role as a psychologist it’ll take a bit longer. Time I don’t want to give to the military anymore. My goals changed & I know I can make a much bigger impact on the world outside of the Air Force with my degrees & experience in psychology.
