When somebody tells me: "restaurants [representing my people] are managed by idiots, come to me for dinner, i'll let you taste true [my people's] cuisine." i try and hide under a parked car. Whoever says "one must be duckburgish to cook duckburg's food" can't cook an egg to save their life, and if their invitation is accepted will invent some atrocious mix of expensive ingredients on the spot.

@jonathanb156
@jonathanb156 4 года назад
@Andre Calvit Some of those comments under the video were awful. The sophistry that you lot use to try and paint dividing lines between appropriation and appreciation is completely invalid. The Chinese dress girl being the best example, as the Chinese culture is by no means oppressed and in fact Chinese people have significant wealth, representation, power, and influence. All this amounts to is white people wanting to have the same rights and privileges as people of other races. I wont hear another rant about there being no white culture, because when people scapegoat us demonise us they're happy to construe a negative notion of white culture, we just want to evaluate our own identity positively as it is better for our collective well-being.

@Andre Calvit Um the Chinese culture is not oppressed, the CCP is not a foreign influence, so they're not oppressed by the so called 'white supremacy'. In the West, Chinese people have higher earnings that most races including whites. They constitute huge proportions of Uni students and get high-profile jobs. I was basically saying that the Chinese aren't oppressed in the West or abroad (in terms of culture, nation), so there's no cultural appropriation argument there. @Jay-jn6ul

I understand that it might seem absurd, but that's only if we don't distinguish between appropriation and appreciation. Appropriation is using, often for your own gain or entertainment, part of a culture in a different way to its original meaning, which is disrespectful. Like wearing a Native American headdress at a music festival despite its sacred origins, or dressing up in a hijab for a Halloween costume. Appreciation is giving it the same meaning and learning about it in the same way as those who are from the culture (or, for my second example, religion) that it belongs to. There are examples where white people think we are appreciating rather than appropriating, but that's only because we stay wilfully ignorant to the voices saying we're using something differently to its meaning in the culture that it's from.

First, she's really talented, let's get that out of the way. Second, I think it's absurd to accuse her of cultural appropriation. She's clearly celebrating the dance rather than misrepresent its roots. Also...there are white non-Irish people who do Irish dancing that don't get accused of cultural appropriation and there are also black Irish people who probably do Irish dancing. Similarly, do non-black people get accused of cultural appropriation when they take up dance styles rooted in black culture in America? It's a blatant racialised double standard.

@@Nasiruify no you not doing research behind the dance or where it came from would be cultural appropriation. That's the thing with ya'll that you don't get. It's y'all not doing any research about the dance or hair style that's the problem.

Appreciation is what I saw. Her dancing is amazing and the 1/8th of me that's Irish is proud she appreciates my mother's ancestors' culture. She's very talented and she's got the talent to go far. Odds are that the people making a fuss aren't Irish and are the same people who wear the honorary Irish button celebrating St. Patrick's day by drinking green beer till they make a fool of themselves and disgrace the day. Also they likely can't define "ironic" either. Keep up the good work Morgan and dance to the song in your heart.

@@DomhnallOSuileabhainPrin-tm1fw Because 150 years ago it was mostly the Irish that were in mixed-race couples with black people.
