Great vehicles! My suggestion is run it stock for awhile. Maybe tires but that's it. Learn what you need and might not need. I would ditch the side steps if you are taking it in rougher situations. "Off roading" can mean many different things. There are pros and cons to every mod. It's very easy to overbuild for your intended use. These things are amazingly capable stock.
@@eddiecarrascojr Yeah when it comes to 4 runners the CV joints on the front axle really don't take a lift kit well. just run bigger tires its just not THE SUV to do it with. and Falken Wild PEAK AT3's if you want a more rugged tire if you can level it its better than lifting but I believe leveling still changes the handle the control arms are at
@@nathandeparis9852 Hey Nathan, Is there a difference between a "Lift Kit" and "Leveling Discs"? I have the Nitto Ridge Grapplers tires with levelers and wonder if I should take out the levelers? They are about 1/34 inches thick. I don't want any issues with the CV joints. Thanks, Skip
Yeah a lift kit is when they take the pieces of the frame that hold the suspension and alter it so it basically "lifts" the entire suspension up the levelers are really spacer pucks they put on the top of your shock/strut. if the spacers didn't change the angle of your needle bearings and joints there ok but I would check, that can also alter your ride quality more than bigger tires. @@skippylippy547
Welcome to the 4Runner family. We've had our 2014 Trail (TRD Off Road) for almost 3 years and 36,000 miles. We have added a 3" lift and 33" tires along with dual batteries, solar, fridge, aux lighting, rock rails, winch and other off road gear. It is amazingly capable and has been off road and Overlanding extensively. Of course it is more capable now than when stock, but like you said it was pretty capable when we got it. Keep in mind yours is newer and has a warranty. Be careful what modifications you do and be sure you don't void your warranty...I'm sure you will love how it performs and will get you way out there for your photography business.
Congrats on joining the 4Runner family! I just re-entered that realm this week as well. Previously I drove a 95 4runner all over the country - traded her in after 350k miles and drover her from VA to FL, TX, OK, CO, WY, OR, CA, AZ.... that 4runner was a beast. Got the same model you went with, but in white and new. I agree with other commenters - drive Raven (sweet name) for a while and figure out what will enhance what you do with it. Def agree on not doing the lift - 4runners never seem to do well with them and you can def add height with better tires. Also agree that getting rid of the rock sliders/steps is a good idea if you're going to go all in with Raven. They reduce clearance and help shorter peeps get in/out but that's about it. I wish I would have been able to find one with the slide out back cargo deck b/c I do a lot of camping and the slide out looks like it would be great to use for a prep area for food or climbing gear but I have stow away tables that I already use for that purpose and they fit on the rack really well. Oh yea - great idea to get a ladder - makes getting gear off the top so much easier!
Great truck! Don't bother with a lift. Doesn't need it and can stress out the needle bearings. Ditch the side steps and add some rock rails if you like. Have fun!!
One of the biggest reasons I want a 4Runner, and you nailed it at 9:30. All these crossovers are ridiculously low and hit my head on the tailgates and passenger doors. Great video and points!
Bought a 2023 40th anniversary in black with the Bronze wheels a few months ago and I’m in love with it….Same reasons as you including taking the back seats out and putting a twin size metal bedframe in from REI on sale for $200. Then 8 inch thick mattress for another few hundred. It’s a fully comfortable bed back there now with lots of storage space under the bedframe and the area next to the bed for a big battery and clothing and gear. Still able to have the front passenger seat open for a guest in the car.
That's a solid version of the 4Runner. Saw it and tested rode it in Overland expo in Flagstaff this summer. Beautiful truck. Sadly out of my price ran. Solid choice though.
Just added one to my Garage as well. I'm with @greg too. The Side steps are just that, not Rock sliders. The ones you have actually reduce clearance with the step, and will likely rip off if you hit a rock. Great looking rig!
I'm right there with you on purchasing a 4Runner! I bought a 2008 4th Gen, with a price that fit my budget. Even though it's 15 years old, it has the same 4.0L engine that is used in the 5th Gens. So, parts are readily available. The first thing I did was replace the old halogen bulbs with LED's. After 2 years of ownership, probably the biggest mods I've done so far are replacing the 15 year old headlight housings that were damaged beyond repair, and pulling out the old XREAS suspension and getting the Dobinsons MRR's! This was initially purchased as my daily driven work vehicle. Being that it's a 4X4 and a source of entertainment as well, so-to-speak. I know the mods will never end, and more will come as needed after I see a use. Enjoy, have fun, and be careful and aware out there!
Congrats i just got a new '23 Lunar Rock TRD Offroad (have the same trd pro wheels on it). the 1GR and 5 speed auto is the way to go for longevity for sure.
Congrats on your new truck 😊 ! I myself just recently purchased a 2024 4Runner Limited, I traded in my 2017 Ford F150 for the 4Runner, I know these 4Runners are bulletproof .
One nice thing to have on hand is a good 12 volt air compressor like Viar. Get one that clamps to the battery. Very nice to have when you want to air up or down your tires when you go off road.
I really just finally decided to get one. Been waffling for months. Same as you, going all black. Going with the TRD PRO. I'm going to start putting feelers out soon.
Great choice!! I got the same one ( 2022 TRD ORP black) for the same reasons.. everything you mentioned in the video was exactly what I thought!! 😄 ( I also like to take pictures and travel… am debating if I should get The Nikon Zf …. ) Good lock w your new baby!!🎉
We have a grey metallic 4Runner with the scoop and it does reflect and block the view particularly when at steep angles off road. We are putting a matte black wrap on the scoop that will help. I do like the look, would trade for a flat hood if we were keeping it longer...Looking for a 6th gen or Land Cruiser 250 once they become available.
Don't listen to these turds who are telling you not to lift it. A 3 inch lift with 285's will be fine and isn't going to hurt your reliability at all. The anti lifter crowd are cheapskates who have never done any serious off-roading. I have had several lifted 4Runners over the years that I got 300,000+ trouble free miles out of them (aside from normal maintenance).
Oh I know. Talked to the folks at Goose gear last summer during Overland Expo. They can make something small just for camera gear but has to be a custom order.
Just bought a 2023 with 12k miles on it. Really stoked to explore with the newly aquired truck and features. I aim to install a second oil filter in line before the original, as to increase longevity of components, hopefully i will be pushing much further than 300k miles. Whatya think?
Right on! I would probably talk to a Toyota mechanic and ask their opinion. I do basic maintaine on my truck newly monthly. My goal is to also extend the car's life beyond 300k!
Nice 4runner bro. I. Have to. Go whit sr5 cust need the 7 seats for kits lolo. But super nice is the premium whit trd wheels and black out package I getbit brand new 2022. Good video bro best choice you make 👌
Eddie so question. I will be purchasing a 2023 Trd off road premium. Crossing my fingers. 😊 I test drove it last week. Since ive never been in a 4runner i noticed the engine is kind of noisy while driving. Is that normal?
Getting the exact one in white next week only shitty part is they have to drive it from a dealer in Pennsylvania so it’s gonna have a 100 miles on it. can’t wait to get rid of my wrx
Hey dude thanks for video. I’m so hyped about getting one and is going to be this year for sure . I said lift , please look into a video from this dude he is a Toyota master technician his name is car care nut. He says u should never lift a 4runnner cause i was not meant to be lifted at its purest . Please look into the video it will be for sure of interest to u. The car care nut. The of video says “ should I buy a 4Runner or wait for new one . Good luck . He says that before u so lift consider some bad ass tires . Take care and much appreciated
I'm getting close. Saving. I can tell you're really happy, and it makes me happy to see and KNOW the transition is worth it. Sometimes, I get nervous about making the move since I've had my camry for 8 years. That emotional connection. But, mannnn, I saw one today, and there was this moment where I saw myself cooking at a comfortable level from the back, and I was like...I need more space. Keep it up. I can't wait to keep seeing the upgrades, the travels, the little details that make it yours. I enjoy seeing everyone's camper conversions. ^_^
Don’t swap them out. Check out Yot Expedition and paint the valences black. Much more cost effective. Replace the front grille with a TRD Pro grill. Add some 33” tires - 255/80r17 are lighter in general than 285/70r17 but some people prefer the thickness of the 285s over the 255s, up to you. And finally Bilstein 5100’s all the way around (I’ve got my front ones set on the 2nd clip). Great entry level mods that are very cost effective and will change the look and feel of your vehicle.
Bro don’t be that guy who throws a lift on your runner right off. Your gonna get so far off road with that thing the way it is just fine. Unless your rock crawling you really don’t need that. You’ll ruin the reliability too and it’s hard to go back. Also you’ll have almost zero acceleration with it after you do that. Not mention the much more often diff maintenance you’ll need to do for trying to push those bigger tires. Front diff on these get much more likely to break with bigger wheels and tires
I fell in love to, but then sometimes when you're running late and you're on the freeway the handling sucks! It's clumsy and takes away from your confidence in maneuvering. Got tired 😢
Nice! Enjoy. I want to get one so bad just the price for them right now are insane! I also hate that the upholstery in the car is not black it’s beige, why couldn’t they just black it out
Have same 2023 in lunar rock….did first break in oil change with 775km on it glad I did……lots of metal fines in oil….. if your keeping it 20 years or so like me…. Change first couple changes sooner….get all that wear in out of the engine. Will last forever.
Congratulations I just traded my 23 Tacoma for a 21 4R. I just did not like the Tacoma ride, engine, seating position, pretty much everything. The 4R is better in every way.
Most 4Runners use the same design and body. The only very a that get a different body are the 4Runner Limited and TRD Pro. So it wouldn't be strange an SR5 to look similar to Off Road premium.
Please don't do a lift on 4runners, the front end will now be misaligned and will give you years of problems. Perhaps look into bigger rims. Please do your research before you do.
You never want to insult a 4Runner with such a disrespectful question. The 4Runner will easily get between 3 to 4 mpg on the highway, city, coasting down hill with the engine off, or sitting in your garage. Not bad at all. 😀
Yeah I realized after I filmed this video. Replacing them soon with something better to add a Baja Front Bumper with Bull bar. Will need something before for the higher clearance.
What’s your point starting at 3:19 ? “Why did I get the 4Runner instead of a Tacoma or Tundra? I’m obsessed with Toyota reliability.” Like Tacoma and Tundra are not reliable Toyotas that last a lifetime?😂 And only towards the end of the video you admit that you’re not a “car guy”. Should have started with that, pal. This video is A total waste of time…except for the drone shots. The drone shots are cool!
Dale Earnhardt Jr named one of his restrictor plate cars "Amelia" Willie Nelson named a guitar "Trigger" B.B. King named a guitar "Lucille" Jerry Garcia played "Tiger" Keith Richards has a guitar named "Micawber" I'm pretty sure all of these folks are or were grown straight men, so why are you hating on this guy? He's just making a cool video about his cool SUV, why put him down for no reason?
What is your point at 3:20 ? “The reason to get a 4Runner and not a Tacoma or Tundra is because I’m obsessed with Toyotas..” Like the Tacoma and Tundra are not Toyotas? 🤣
