@mad8805

@Lichmourne yea it’s too bad coworkers/employers look down on ppl who ask “dumb” questions. On my first day working at a job when I was 16 my two managers said I had no common sense because I didn’t know what car I had to take the food out to (I worked at McDonalds) and they later called me stupid. It’s like that almost everywhere too, even at schools. Dumb questions make ppl think you’re dumb and for some reason, or at least where I live, if you ask dumb questions you either won’t get hired or you’ll get fired.

Had a co-worker, Nick, who was JUST like this. Asked so many questions it would drive the other employees crazy. Except instead of just the first day it was everyday for weeks. Manager always stuck us on the same shift, perhaps because I didn't have a problem with it and probably because I was the only person who actually cared. Other co-workers would make fun of him and belittle him, but by the end of that year nick was by far one of the most valued employees. By asking so many questions he learned his job inside out in a way that went beyond routine and enabled him to handle unexpected events with ease because he truly understood what he was doing. Everyone wanted the guy on their shift by the time I left. That company is long gone now, but I hope he's doing well where ever he is now.

This, Exactly This. In my time of working 2 jobs, I've had the same problem that I even "told" them before the first day that I would need a few days of a reminder of how to do something before I got it and I had to force them by my own words to remind me and eventually my brain became a super potato, like a smart I know just about everything about the work type and would help other employees. There was this one dude at my job who was still a facility working person(Cleaning toilets ect) and every day I would have a nice chat with him, how his day went, tell him to keep pushing forward and just do the best he can, even on his hard days, I always tried my best to pickup his pace. Everybody else was: Oh this guy is gonna be hard to work with. My point: Everybody may not be perfect but you can always HELP them achieve to be better and get almost nearly perfect, just because you are better does not mean that you should treat others like you are better even as a manager, you are still at a job, treat your employees like you want them to treat you and the reward will happen.

I had a similar experience with my first ever job- not only did I get nervous and ask silly questions too but it was a girly café made up of girls who would bitch about customers who were even the least bit fussy. One can only imagine what they were saying behind my back. They let me go after my trial period ended without warning, having taught me next to nothing about how to make coffees or prepare certain items like they said they would. They didn’t even tell me I was doing a ‘bad job’ even when I’d ask “is this okay?” so I had no idea they weren’t satisfied with me until they let me go. I wouldn’t be surprised if they had made their minds up about me early on. Now when I train up new people in my current job I make a point to be patient and honest with them and to give them the benefit of the doubt as a new job anywhere can be quite intimidating at first. We’re all capable of being good at our job once taught and applied enough times, and I wish every employer would understand that.
@amevandervorst6852
@amevandervorst6852 3 года назад
exactly this! When I started my job 3 years ago at 16 nobody really tried to talk to me or made an effort to get to know me while working (I work at a place where working together is kinda a big deal otherwise it will go to shit real fast haha). A year ago, during summer when Corona hit really hard in my country and we still had to work people really got to know me and I got to know them, I really made friends at work, which meant that the working together part also went a lot better. Now, every time someone new comes in, I always make an effort to ask their names and just chat with them. So they have at least 1 person to fall back to when something isn’t working out, or when they don’t know what to do. Because to be brutally honest, I would have killed for that experience when I started working here as my first job at 16.

When I was 15 I got a job as an "intern" at a mom and pop shop bakery, they didn't pay me is all that meant, I worked there for a year and a half before they started to pay me, I wasn't going to school so I really had nothing better to do, plus it was fun and I got to learn how to make cakes and stuff. The owner was a horrible person and yelled at me almost daily for messing things up or not paying attention, after about four years of me working the owner sold the place to an absolute sweetheart and she's become a great friend to me. I left the bakery after five years and went to work at a local pizza restaurant trying to become a manager so I could eventually have enough experience to open my own bakery, I worked there for a year and two months and after many asks they wouldn't give me the management job. So I left that place and ended up getting a job at one of the nicest and highest end steakhouses in america here in cali, they gave me a manager position in 7 months. I went on to helping them open back up through lockdown and they absolutely loved and appreciated my efforts. About July of 2020 the new owner of the bakery called me and said she was going to open up a second location for the bakery I used to work at, so I went back to my old stomping grounds and we open in two weeks ❤️

this really hits home. i graduated high school 8 years ago and changed paths so many times. i decided i wanted to write code and make games, and i got into my dream university after several years of community college. it was... too much for me, to say the least. i fell into old bad mental health habits, i got hardcore imposter syndrome, and i just felt like i couldn't make any progress. i dropped out after 2 years and felt miserable. thought i was on the wrong path, that maybe i just wasn't smart enough to pursue my passions. that was 4 years ago now, and i'm just finishing my last quarter at another university getting that same degree i tried and failed at before. this time, though, i'm graduating top of the class and confident in my abilities. self-sabotage is real, and failure isn't forever. changing "i can't do this" to "i can't do this yet" can make a world of difference.

When I was 17 I worked my first job at Burger King... I constantly got yelled at by my manager and co workers for slowing things down, not knowing how to change the sink water, messing up sandwiches etc. I would come home every night stressed out and there were moments where I’ve thought of crying and walking out of the job. It took a while for me to finally adapt but when I did, it was so worth not giving up. I used to hear “Brandon! When will you get this right” to “hey Brandon could you stay an extra hour?” So whatever you’re going through, especially as a teenage employee, just know it’ll get better!!!

Had a job as a waitress at 16 and I was the exact same. I then realized once I had left that job and worked somewhere else that it wasn’t just me being stressed that was making the job so difficult, it was also my boss and the people around me. My boss would yell at me and treat me like a child, and while I was the youngest employee, you shouldn’t belittle your employees like that. The yelling only added to my stress to the point that I would get sick at work and need to go home (because a customer isn’t going to want a sick person handling their food) Long story short, I was a nervous person with a shit boss in a stressful work environment... I was also fired from two jobs for the same reason. Asked a lot of questions, people got annoyed with me haha. About a year later of being unemployed, I'm working at a care home, where I have a few different positions that I cover for. My boss really likes me, and I like my boss. I even got a higher starting wage than my previous jobs, and a raise after that for working there about 5 months. So life does get better sometimes. I thought I was so useless but just do your best and you'll be fine 😌 just because life sucks now, it doesn't always mean that you won't get better. I think asking questions shows that the employee wants to do good and I see it as taking an interest in your job and nothing is wrong with that. Sometimes I ask questions, already knowing the answer, just to keep a conversation going to avoid that awkward silence. I guess asking where a sink drain plug is is a little much tho lol. I'd attribute it to being nervous and if a kid is the employee it's only natural theyd be nervous and make some dumb mistakes and even ask silly questions but this is how they learn.

That comment still rattles around in my brain ten years later. People can be so harsh, but having coworkers and managers with your attitude is extremely valued!

The thing about work is that when you mess up something, it'll be someone else cleaning up your mess in one way or another. Whether it's shortage for another task or literally cleaning up your mess, it's not okay to fuck up without getting better. At which point the other person will have to give you some select words in a futile attempt to snap you out of your head.
@heykesl
@heykesl 3 года назад
@@ww-pw6di That's a fair take on it, but that was not the situation at hand. There are people that do what you're describing, but I personally ask questions to ensure that we're both on the same page. For example, in my current career, my team works under several different levels of administration. When an upper level gives incredibly vague instructions or expectations, our closest level of administration encourages us to ask questions, no matter how many or how "dumb" some people may think they are. I also have people who are underneath me in my job, and I allow them to ask as many questions as possible because I want them to truly understand my own expectations of the material. Being a leader is about being patient, and being the person who asks the questions is about putting forth the effort afterwards and delivering. This girl who worked at my previous waitressing job asked me the question out of impatience because I didn't understand her vague directions the FIRST time, due to being brand new on the job - not because I was doing anything to mess up the task at hand and create more work for her. In fact, I was asking questions so to NOT create more work for her.

While working at McDonalds and I made the decision that graphic design was my calling, I ended up leaving to go to school full time (which I'm on the fence now...student debt is not the business lol)...but anyways after learning what I need to learn I started interning and freelancing. (Freelanced for yeeeaaaarrrrsss) Making some decent amount of money doing it. Till one day I just happened to stumble across a job posting and boom, got the job. Wasn't referred, didn't have a connection etc...my job and work/industry experienced got me the job. When I was in my early 20's, I was soooo driven. I would have like 2-3 jobs (including freelance). I would do fast food, teach or radio while I freelance on the side just to help cover my bills/living expenses till I finally got to a point where I had enough clients to cover "business expenses" and my own personal/living expenses. That's when I was able to solely focus on designing. My path may or may not be the path for you. My only advice is DO IT! Get out there and just start creating...create, create, create. Eventually it'll hit (even when you are at your lowest or don't see instant results....KEEP CREATING!). I went through that for sooo many years. Slow months, no clients, barely making ends meet, questioning my design abilities. But you just keep creating, keep working hard and one day....BAM...it all falls together. Looking back, my journey was crazy. I ended up doing sooo many different projects, fields, clients etc. At one time I worked in the radio & music festival industry which taught me a lot about the music industry. And because of that and being a designer...those 2 things got me my career job, full benefits, retirement health insurance....EVERYTHING lol.

This dude is cooking waffle cones, rinsing his tools, and catching thrown ice cream balls all while making products to order. This is a true pro. I don't want that level of effort when I get ice cream, but this dude goes the extra mile, and hopefully gets tips that make his extra effort worth it.

I had this exact job for over a year in college. The more you do it, everything becomes 2nd nature. I did once have the all time worst hangover of my life and I was like, yo I am SICK.
