I'm back in the US after living in Germany for over 18 months! Will the free water make up for missing out on the amazing German bread? Will I ever get used to driving without the autobahn again?
Hi! I'm Kelly and I am an American who lived in Germany for 18 wonderful months. While I lived abroad before in Turkey and had done quite a bit of traveling beforehand, those 18 months in Germany definitely broadened my perspective of Germany, Europe, and even the US in so many different ways! I wanted to share my perceptions with you guys through RU-vid so that maybe you can gain context to things you've heard about, or learn new information or a different perspective, or maybe this is everything you've heard before and further confirms your world view. No matter what the reason, I hope that you enjoy my videos! Don't forget to subscribe to my channel and turn on notifications so that you always know when I'm posting new content :)

It's sad that you are not between us anymore. But i fully agree that education is more important. You mentioned that you was in PA. Did you ever visited Franklin? It's in PA. Around 2 decades ago i had a girlfriend there. She is the reason why i can speak to you in english now. She teached me english. Because, i only had very simple english at school. The change(Fall of the Berlin wall) happened and all the teachers were gone west by the time. So i was happy to be able to learn english from her. She went to a university at this time. I think it was in Johnstown. But i'm not sure. I never was in the US. She always came to germany for hollidays with her parents. Now that you are in the US, you maybe could show us around? If you have time. Great video again. Thanks. Good luck with your studies! ;) Edit: I've found the link to her university in one of her old eMails. It was that one: www.upj.pitt.edu/ :)

I grew up in one of the U.S.'s "megalopolises," but decided at the age of 14 I was going to get out. I finally moved out permanently when I was 22 and am now months from being 70. I like small towns (under 3,000 people), nothing bigger than the 7,000 person town I live in now and wide open, remote, rural areas with a very low population density that is found in the western portion of the U.S. I lived at a ranger station outside any town at all for a number of years that did not have commercial electric or phone service, with the nearest store (about the size of most gas station convenience stores) was 45 miles of dirt road from the ranger station. I love day hiking, backpacking and cross country skiing (both day and multiple day trips). I love climbing peaks (peak bagging). I visit cities as little as possible. I love wilderness and high elevation areas. I love fishing in mountain streams and lakes. The tiny doses of those things in Europe would cause me to become claustrophobic, as does spending time in the eastern U.S. I'm retired from the U.S. Forest Service and worked nearly all of my career in field going positions primarily in recreation management and in the last 10 years that had very high recreation visitation year long and on one of the most heavily used international visitation routes in the country. Nearly everyone of them I spoke with, no matter what area of the world they lived in, remarked about the wide open spaces and great distances we have between towns and cities. One of the primary reasons the U.S. has a huge trade surplus in tourism is because of its outstanding public land system, which, in my opinion, is the best in the world. I don't have to travel to other countries to come to this conclusion, people from those countries would walk up to me and tell me so. They often had no idea of how large the states on their maps are. They asked me about the planned route of the next day and when I told them they would need 4 nights in motels to complete it, they are shocked and I'm sure many walked away not believing me. Your comparison of the two countries is based on living in cities and I enjoy watching your videos to learn about different cultures, but I'm pretty happy where I'm at. That's good too as we don't have enough money to travel, not even in the U.S. much, in our retirement years. As a result I travel vicariously on RU-vid!

Be careful with drivers who pass on the right. That was one of the hardest things to retrain myself after moving back to the USA.
@Kellydoesherthing
@Kellydoesherthing 6 лет назад
you're not kidding!! especially on the east coast. it's insane!
@archangele1
@archangele1 5 лет назад
This is why you are supposed pass left drive right. I have seen passing on the right everywhere in the world (in areas where you drive to the right as opposed to England and Japan) especially if someone in the left lane is going slow or slowing down to take a turn. Everywhere I have ever driven people get really annoyed at slow drivers who just hang out in the left, or passing lane. My friend lives in Germany and told me that on the main highways, people are more cognizant of which lane they are in and they tended to stay to the right when not over taking another vehicle. Also, traffic laws are more fiercely enforced in Germany and fines are relative to income. In the USA, a lot of people disregard the laws of the road. I constantly see slow drivers hog the left lane of a highway. People just think nothing of blasting around them on the right. If they didn't, half the highways would end up in grid lock.
@bluerisk
@bluerisk 5 лет назад
I might be incorrect, but in German it is mandatory to drive on the right, and strictly forbidden to pass on the right, while in the US you might drive where you want, and passing left or right as you like.
@Paul54378
@Paul54378 5 лет назад
bluerisk Correct im any case but traffic jams 😉
@ebennianselm640
@ebennianselm640 5 лет назад
Its more so that people in the DMV area can't drive and their licenses should be revoked. I mostly see people passing on the right when people hog the left lane going the same speed as the person in the middle lane. It is so frustrating.

Congratulations for being accepted for the programme:) Interesting comparison between Germany and the US. I fully agree about the issue of people being more outgoing in the US. Eaven if it is sometimes superficial in anglo saxon countries, all those nice interactions with strangers in the streets, in shops etc. can be so refreshing. I can fully understand that the best part is being closer to your family now, especially after being overseas for more than a decade. In most places in Europe, if you ask for tap water in a restaurant its free. Cant speak for everywhere but in Austria and Bavaria the tap water is as good as if not better than bottled water, as it comes from the alps.

@@rippspeck Anyway, regulations for tap water in Germany are stricter than regulations for bottled water, so the "as good as if not better than bottled water" still holds.
@mateluna
@mateluna 5 лет назад
Yes, but in most restaurants they'll shove the bottled water, even if you quote them the studies (Stiftung Warentest). My solution was: offer to pay the cost of bottled water (2-3€) for their tap water (Leitungswasser). It worked almost every time and most of the time they felt a bit embarrassed and ended up not charging for the water. DC water is supposedly safe, but I wonder. This week some sectors of the city were advised by the water utility, TO BOIL THE WATER due to some broken pipe. Something I don't recall experiencing, even growing up as a child in Panama (let alone in Germany). Last year we had a similar warning in NW DC.

Might be true for most regions. But I have been to Vienna several times now, because I have some friends there. And of course, they were also like "oh you must taste the tap water here, its the best, because alps!!!111". In fact, the tap water there didn't taste very good. It was pretty metallic, almost tasted rust-ish. That was at my hotel, and also at some restaurants we visited. Maybe its a psychologic thing, something like, I don't trust the water supply network of big cities (I'm from rural Germany), but anyways, the bottled water over there was fine.

WHO EVER IN THE WORLD IS MOVE TO ANOTHER PLACE WILL BE HOMESICK. We here in Europe KNOW THAT VERY WELL due to it is easy to get to another culture and language here - and feel homesick. another thing is that you may JUST DID NOT FIT IN or could comfort yourself to feel home there - but that take much longer time than 1 year and 8 months. and that can happen even if you just move state or city.

@MrMorrigan that is interesting. How, so? How do I find my T550 flour in America? It looks like they don't use a number system, is it called "all-purpose flour"? @MrMorrigan not an easy question. Flour is categorized based on its chemical properties. To produce flour with deterministic properties special type of plants are used (through selective breeding). The manufacturing process further refines that adding other ingredients. I don't know much details, though, so take it with a grain of salt. Keep in mind that flour is mostly used by machines that simply won't work if the dough doesn't have the right texture.

Since I've been back, I've had multiple conversations with complete strangers that i've passed by on the street and i loved every minute of it. it is probably very difficult to imagine it or understand it if you haven't been a part of this culture or a similar culture because it sounds so weird to spend time talking to people you don't know and may never see again. but as LINDA wrote, it's so nice to learn about another person and find out they have a connection with you in some way. and who knows, maybe it could really turn into an actual friendship :)

I love it about America... people talk to you, while in Switzerland not even my colleagues talk to me or answer sometimes to just a "good day".... Once in an elevator in Chicago a guy started to say he should come with me to have a party because I had a six pack of beer with me. At the time I just laughed and say "sure, that's a good idea", and the guy was really surprised "oh, really?!" Only later I realized the guy might have been gay, but I was just saying... "sure man, whatever you say" but he thought I was speaking for real. There is a saying in Portugal that if you ask a girl for the time she thinks you want to date her, or rape her and she might call the cops..... while you just need to know the time! In the US you can even go on blind dates.... image that, a blind date. In Europe you almost need to meet half of the family for a girl to agree to go out with you.

Germans really like cash. Sometimes there were public surveys and I think most of the people like it to pay in cash and don't want cash to be replaced by electronic paying. Of course it's an advantage not to have cash with you, then you can't get robbed and loose the money, but on the other hand it's good not to have "unlimited" money with you, because when you only have let's say 50$ in cash you can only spend them, whereas when you have a credit card or applepay etc. you can spend more then that, and tend to buy more (often unnecessary) things. Paying not in cash probably also makes you buy more things because you don't see the money you are spending. It's just a number on a display.

Many people like paying pay with paypal more and more, but for casual shopping cash is much better to overlook your budget. I would never want to pay every single thing with credit cards.

I wouldn't call it annoying, but irritating^^ Greeting people when you're passing them is one thing but stop and start asking personal questions to a total stranger is something we usually don't ever do in germany. And it has nothing to do with someone being introverted. People would just be irritated. We have no sense for "small talk" ;) At least not with people we never met before.

So the water in restaurants is free, but the food is expensive. Whereas in Germany you have to pay for water, but the food doesn't cost as much. In the end, your restaurant bill might not be so different.
@Kellydoesherthing
@Kellydoesherthing 6 лет назад
i think the food costs are all relative based on what and where...but i understand what you're saying. i think our restaurants depend on people buying drinks in addition to the water. sodas, for example, are poured from a fountain machine which costs restaurants like 5 cents to serve whereas they will charge a customer $2 or whatever for it.

Nah. Restaurant prices in US are far more expensive ...and i am talking about restaurants not diners /fast-food joints.... the price of food and alcoholic beverages in US (especially wine) far outweighs the free water.... a couple of years ago i spent a couple of weeks on east & west coast and dined regularly in restaurants - can't remember any one time that i spent much less than 50$ per person

Imre Hundertwasser I agree, but what you're not thinking of is the meals are a hell a lot bigger. You can either split a meal and pay for only 1/2 a meal or you can have leftovers and have lunch or dinner the next day. Now I rather have free water and sort of expensive food because it pays out in the end.

It's kind of cool to see it from the opposite side, though. P.S.: I agree you guys have amazing seafood dishes up in the North-East; if/when you visit Europe again, though, do check out Belgium, Brussels area. I lived there for six years and they have some of the best mussels ever. Also, northern Germany is really good when it comes to things like smoked trout - and the North of France has some great seafood soups and stews.

even here in Germany IMO there is a major bicyclist annoyance, mostly in the summer. its called Rennradfahrer (racing bike riders) who refuse to use the superbly built bike lane by any means. Concerning the bread, I guess you should take the 3-year apprenticeship in Germany and spread a bit of German culture in the USA ;-) And I guess you have never been to northern Germany at the coast. There is as you can imagine good seafood. But in general you are right. Good seafood is scarce inland.

when my mom lived in the US (Kansas) in the 70s, everybody baked their own bread, since you couldn't buy proper and healthy bread in the stores. It's actually not that hard or time consuming, but you have to try a couple of times to get a good taste. I always have yeast at home, so when we forget to go to the bakery and they are closed already, I can just whip some up! :-)

I guess the downside of the shiny German autobahn is that there are many construction sites slowing everything down -- and Germans complain about that a lot.
@Compufreak
@Compufreak 6 лет назад
Haha yeah. I am traveling to work daily, 50km each direction. Without construction sites it takes me about 40 minutes, currently it ranges everywhere from 45 to 90 minutes, because there are construction sites everywhere xD During the last 12 months there were like 3 months without a construction site on my daily (Autobahn) route, it was awesome :) I got into the routine of checking the "Verkehrsfunk" and Google Maps daily to see which route is the fastest, either going "Landstraße" and through the city or using the Autobahn. This let's me mostly keep my time under 60 minutes.
@Kellydoesherthing
@Kellydoesherthing 6 лет назад
very true! we definitely have our construction nightmares as well but it seems that we just can't keep up with the maintenance of our highways. i don't know if we are just using cheaper material that degrades so much more quickly or if it's the sheer amount of highways throughout the country or what....
@Compufreak
@Compufreak 6 лет назад
I tried to find some statistics on it, but wasn't successful - but I saw a documentation about the investments and maintenance costs per km for the Autobahn and they are way higher than on almost any road elsewhere in the world - this also is necessary because of the high speeds driven here. The germans just love their cars and roads (or at least the government does, and I do) and it probably also helps the german car industry - so we invest a large amount of money on public roads (at least if it's the Autobahn). The high taxes on fuel are partially caused by the high maintenance costs (the other part are mostly environmental reasons, as far as I know). There also exists "LKW-Maut" (toll for trucks) since a couple of years and the government is working on adding "PKW-Maut" (toll for cars) as well. When I was in California I was really surprised by the amount of broken tires on the side of the road - I am not sure if it's because of the bad road conditions or because of less strict laws regarding the maintenance of tires in the US, but it was a really new picture for me. Regarding cheap material, there also were some scandals in germany where the government knowingly used bad material and now they have to completely redo the sections that were built with this... Hopefully with better material this time ;)
@Kellydoesherthing
@Kellydoesherthing 6 лет назад
ah ok thank you for sharing :) as for the broken tires, someone once told me that the tractor trailer tires are designed to just blow off if they get punctured so that the driver can keep going (the other tires compensate for that now missing tire) but i've never tried to fact check that. but it can certainly explain why there are so many shredded tires on the sides of the roads. our tractor trailer traffic is insane! and funny you write about scandals, i think there are some states here where people think they are being swindled in similar manners

The biggest problem with going to a Socialist/Social Democrat form of government in the USA is an under-educated populace combined with the ability of those who would NOT make as many $millions/$billions under such a structure and the propaganda ability enabled by mass media and a first amendment to our Constitution that lets you say whatever you want, without necessarily supporting it with fact. Our attempt at a semi-socialized medicine program had horrendous pushback. The comment on 70% deductions....I get it. But in the USA, investing in the accepted 40lk is base on the stock market, primarily. If it falls below where you entered the program, all your money is gone. most Americans don't even know how their 401k works. Medical insurance, usually part of a GOOD job, still costs you money. Without that, over 60 year olds could end up paying over $1000/month. The system is set up to take all you can earn, and all that you have saved before you die. The introduction of a "reverse" mortgage program sounds great: "sell" your house back to the bank. But, it is actually a loan against your house, paid for by the bank eventually owning your home and property. Hmm. They way wealth can be guaranteed in the USA is maintaining property within your family. Pass it on. The stupidity of Americans is ridiculous.
@yabbadabba1975
@yabbadabba1975 5 лет назад
VW, BMW, Mercedes Benz, others have come to the states for cheap labor, but do not leave their homeland. I know they have profits, but the taxes on those profits finance university level educations that would cost $60 thousand + in the USA, amazing road and rail, public services about which Americans can only dream. Our corporations structure themselves so they pay few or NO taxes on their profits. Our richest folks structure their billions so they live off of only investments and interests, pay little in taxes,and give tens of $millions to politicians who enable them. I'll take the German system. Maybe there are some better. Let me know.

Hi Kelly.In Northern Germany seafood is more popular than in Central and Southern Germany. I'm sure there are several "NORDSEE" shops in Frankfurt where you can buy all kinds of seafood. I grew from then on up in Central Germany (1947-1971) and eating seafood wasn't a grat thing then. I truly enjoyed some of your videos, Kelly. Watching them I think you have already been a little germanized as I have been americanized. I have worked in the states (NC) for only 8 months but I have basically made the same observations. I might stress certain differences more and some less but overall I agree with all of them. I would like to add here that the friendliness you mentioned is indeed a huge difference. Some Germans might percieve that friendliness as superficial as they might expect a different follow-up but as soon as you get used to interpreting it the right way it actually simply lifts your spirit throughout the day. When I came back to Germany I continued to greet and smile at people on the street (obviously not in crowded areas) and was surprised on how often I actually didnt get any response at all, or a look that seemed surprised or unsure as to how to react to that stranger. So I gave it up pretty soon. As for the bread... try and find a German bakery in DC. There are some. They look mainly pastry oriented when I googled them but you might wanna try your luck. In Durham I found the 'Gugelhupf' run by German immigrants and they had pretty good sour-dough breads there, so... Adding a short list of foods I missed coming back to Germany: pulled pork, bbq southern style, five guys (sry, but I loved those burgers) and, strangely enough, hawaiian punch polar blast. Success with your studies and best wishes!

Of course you can drive from country to country because European countries are VERY small in comparison to the USA. U.S. states with about the same square miles as European countries (different shapes but about the same "size"): Maryland = Belgium, Denmark, Netherlands, Switzerland West Virginia = Ireland South Carolina = Austria, Czechia Maine = Portugal Indiana = Hungary Louisiana = Greece Michigan = United Kingdom of England, Scotland, Wales and North Ireland Arizona = Italy New Mexico = Finland, Norway, Poland Montana = Germany California= France, Spain, Sweden TRIVIA du jour The country of Ireland has about the same square miles as the Navajo Indian Reservation. BUT Ireland and the Navajo Reservation have vastly different populations. 4,773,000 Ireland 0,356,890 Navajos For every person on the Rez, there are 13 people in Eire. 13 times as many people on about the same number of square miles!

You can't get seafood in the Midwest? Clearly, you haven't spent time in any big Midwestern city. They have these things called airplanes. Seafood is flown in fresh daily and there are lots of amazing places to get seafood. Maybe as you're reorienting yourself to the U.S., you'll have the opportunity to find some great stuff that you didn't know existed. Also, comparing bakery bread from Germany to grocery store bread in the U.S. is a silly comparison. Compare bakery bread to bakery bread for a more reasonable comparison. There are some great bakeries in every big city in the U.S. I'm sure living in Germany was a fabulous adventure and there are lots of things that can be MUCH better in the U.S., but I would encourage you to explore the U.S. more. George Washington University is one of the best US schools to study US politics. I don't know if that's what Kelly is studying, but if so this opportunity would be head and shoulders above any education she could get in Germany on the subject.

So glad I found your channel! I can identify with a lot of things you mentioned. I lived in Germany for 3years in the 1970’s. It does take awhile to readjust, so, be patient with yourself. I must admit I loved the numerous open air markets, but to this day, I rarely eat sausage (worst). Lol! I wonder if seeing little old ladies, in long black dresses, riding bikes is still a common sight? This always made me smile. Even back then, people did not use plastic bags for groceries and the streets were kept immaculately. I did miss my family so much, so, I was extremely happy to come home to the USA. At leastI know when the holidays are and there is always something open for emergencies. Well, congratulations on getting accepted into your current program! Education is the one thing that no one can ever take away from you! God bless and savor each class.

Kind of funny... most of the things you missed by being in Germany would not have been a thing in Norway. We got plenty of seafood. Very rare that a shop do not accept some form of debit or credit card. To me it seems 99% of bread in US is white bread. Its not very fulfilling or healthy in the long run.

Come on, we have plenty of great sea food in Germany as well ... you just need to move to the parts closest to Norway. The most important thing about fresh sea word is living at the sea. ^_^

Not a fan of D.C. the traffic is horrible and so is the crime... lived there before moving to the outskirts of Hamburg where I feel much safer. As far as German bakeries go... one word: franzbrötchen! I don't think I'll ever move back to the US. I fell in love with this place, and I'm very fortunate that I've got the opportunity to live here. I do miss things like 24hr stores/restaurants, and larger food portions but not too much.

there are always tradeoffs :) DC is getting better with crime, from what i understand...slowly and in certain areas. i will be living within the district and where i'm at, you can definitely tell that the neighborhood was rough at one point, but is now gentrified. the traffic though. ughhhhhh!! i'm glad you're happy in your new home

American culture is about individuals who do not want to contribute to others. My American friends do not understand why they should pay a dime for public ameneties like roads or sewer systems. It is a strange phenomenon. So, Trump gives billions to billionaires and millionaires, who are not affected by infrastructural problems, and only promises to do something about infrastructure because people want to hear that and then vote for him. But his gang will not really work on infra because it is not in the American culture. The degree of collective care is the principal difference with most other advanced cultures.
@Kellydoesherthing
@Kellydoesherthing 6 лет назад
i've spent a lottttt of time talking to people (both Germans and Americans) about this because I think it is truly the number one cultural difference between the two countries, and a lot of the other differences can be attributed to this. Germany is very communal based whereas the US is very individual
@charlesvanderhoog7056
@charlesvanderhoog7056 6 лет назад
Thank you. But you have seen both sides, too. How do you look upon your American friends now? I consider the enormous wealth of Americans as the principal blindfold to their understanding of the benefits of a balance between communality and individuality. Proof of this is when you look into poor neighborhoods. There, people learn quickly that taking care for one another next to oneself, has, ultimately, personal benefits as well. How do your American friends and family members see this? And there is something else I would like to know. I had the impression that most Americans thought that Michael Moore's documentary "Where to invade next?" was a kind of variety show, staged for laughs but fake. Is that true?
@Kellydoesherthing
@Kellydoesherthing 6 лет назад
whew this is a question that definitely requires some more thought then i can give it right now, but quickly, i will say that i have friends of all different income levels and this combined with their life experiences/exposure/upbringing, etc all help to shape their opinion on this so it's difficult to categorize all of my friends. instead, i will talk about myself haha I used to have this mindset you describe...where I don't want to share my money, it's my money...i earned it. but now that i've been to germany, and i see the benefits that come along with their higher taxes, i'm starting to shift. i genuinely would be willing to pay more in taxes as long as it was appropriately used toward social programs/benefits because i fully believe that it would help build a more stable economy, etc. for a quick example, i don't like seeing all of the homeless around here in DC...not in a "ew, homeless people way" but in a very empathetic way. i wish that we had programs to truly help rehab these people...and keep people from ever getting into that situation. these are people who could be contributing to society and i truly believe many of them want to be contributing...but for whatever reason, they either chose to go down a path or were forced down a path that leads them to be a "burden" instead. i will leave it at that as i really should be studying haha i've never seen that michael moore's documentary so i can't comment on it. thanks for making my brain think :)
@charlesvanderhoog7056
@charlesvanderhoog7056 6 лет назад
Not seen? You shold definitely see that documentary, now that you have been in Europe yourself. I must say he picks out the extremes but nevertheless, there is a huge message in there, or so he thought. Many in the US thought he was just making a satire of sorts and many Europeans couldn't see what was so special about it (except the Portugese and Norwegian bits).
@Neville60001
@Neville60001 6 лет назад
+Charles van der Hoog , Michael Moore is _nothing_ but a shit disturber of the first order; I used to like his docs, but then I realized that he was manufacturing dissent and lying about his sources-this documentary tells why (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ek0taJKn6ao.html) and this article does too (www.thepeoplesview.net/main/2017/1/14/michael-moore-the-appropriator-in-chief?rq=Michael%20Moore) I don't deny that the USA has problems (no nation's perfect) but he's just a shit disturber passing himself off as a variation on Upton Sinclair or others like Sinclair, when he really isn't.

@erictrumpler9652

rbeck.....it's not Europe that's gone left, it's America gone right. Take a serious look at European politics....most European countries have conservative governments. I agree that they are significantly left of the US, but clearly European politics have been much more stable than US politics....one of the reasons many of us Americans enjoy living in Germany is that we aren't impacted by the volatility of American politics.
@rbeck3200tb40
@rbeck3200tb40 6 лет назад
Western Europe has gone far left in the past 20 years . They used to be good Christian nations now look at them .America has always been good true conservative people only thr brainwashed trendies trying to fit in and the crazies are far left .Western Europeans call their leftist governments "conservative" when they of course are not . They are radical socialists enslaved by the old soviet "political correctness" trends reemerging in modern society . American politics have always been stable thanks to our founding fathers , our rights which no other nation on Earth has and our Constitution. The unelected radical leftist European Union destabilized Western Europe by their destructive forced policies of legalized open borders causing mass invasion and restrictive laws which destroy the little rights Western Europeans barely had to begin with. The only politicians who impacted the US in the past years are Obama (real name Barry Soetoro) who devastated the economy by his radical leftist agendas . Thankfully thats being reversed now. Idiots (no offense) who dont understand this are the only minority whos living in foreign countries thinking its so wonderful escaping the "volatiity" whatever that means that they imagine .
@erictrumpler9652
@erictrumpler9652 6 лет назад
You're totally wrong....France under Mitterand, Germany under Brandt and Schmidt and later Schröder, Britain under Tony Blair were significantly more left oriented than today. And neo-Nazi kooks are on the rise as well....and former socialist countries like Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, and Romania have totally reactionary right-wing governments. And if I started talking about Berlusconi in Italy..... You are aware that a lot of your highly touted constitutional rights are seriously infringed upon by the so-called Patriot Act that Republicans passed under GW Bush.

To a lot of young, the grass always seems greener on the other side. You must remember, it has been three decades since the fall of the Iron Curtain. So Europe, especially central and eastern, are on an economic up swing while the west is stagnant. Also, any country is nice to live in if you have money and the time to explore things. Things are a lot different when you are actually working for a living and having to worry about your future. Myself, I do not find the new multiculturalism of western Europe to be my cup of tea. You talk about volatile aspects of government. Look at post and pre USSR Europe. What I have seen is that Eastern and East Central Europe are growing their stability and are proud of their heritage and are more nationalistic. I would much rather live in Poland, or Hungary then Germany. But that is just me.

Hi Kelly, I think you really hit the nail on the head. On almost all accounts😉. I just watched a few of your videos and I really like them. I’ve been living in the US for almost 28 years and being a German I understand a lot of the “things I miss about Germany” points, amongst other things you mentioned in your videos. I’ve been trying to get my point across for a long time to my peers. A lot of my friends here in the US can not understand things that can be NORMAL and good, “not 3rd world”(cause that’s what they think about every country outside the US), and still be good. The culture, the everyday living, the food and the festival ect. All the things that are great😊. Most of them haven’t been outside the state they live in(talking about my friends here). It has been a struggle to make them understand the things, great things, I might add, that exist outside of the US. By no means am I knocking the country I live in (US) but opening the eyes to the blind has been frustrating. Heck when I first came here, at my first job, a guy asked me if we had running water 💦 in Germany. I love the fact that you are explaining things that are fundamentally German through your videos. Keep up the good work 👍🏻
