Ding Ding! They can try a different fluid but sounds like no fluid is going to completely fix it at this point. fwiw am around 400K Getrag 250 behind an S52. Synchromesh Oil changes every other car motor oil change with some LM additive. Still silky smooth

Honestly she should put a ZF in there, the ZFs are much stronger and more reliable.

@@mohamadhamad770 the ZF S5-31 is a pretty good option they are just held at a premium for good reason.

@@RLTyou were very specific with the zf numbers. Are there different zf gear boxes used in the e36 like 328 or the m3?

@@dohc1974 the ZF S5-31 I referred to is the gearbox in the e36 and 46 for the larger displacement engines like the 2.8 and 3.0. The lower displacement cars got the Getrag 250g or I think a getrag 240g. The M3 had a 6 speed that I unfortunately do not recall the model number of but it was built by ZF. BMW seems to use ZF in their higher torque cars to prevent issues like what Colette was having.

This is because of the chassis mounted shifter and not having solid metal or delrin engine mounts, or at the minimum very hard poly. When the engine and trans moves and the shifter is body mounted(fixed) all that can move is the linkage. Pulls the trans out of gear.

Correct. They were a "compact executive car" that would clock up hundreds of thousands of miles and then be flogged off cheap. The only thing they had going for them was the rear drive and multilink suspension, so with minimal work they could be made to drift. That work usually involved stripping the weight out of them, welding braces in a couple choice places, and replacing bushings with solid mounts (the one at 9mins ish for example). It was one of the cheapest possible drift cars you could get at the time, in fact a mate of mine got FIVE of them for a thousand pounds along with some bits of a 6th one that was smashed beyond repair. He ended up making 3 good drift cars out of them that competed for a while before being sold for parts and scrap. The one good shell left over had a Volvo turbo 5cyl put into it along with all aftermarket running gear and is still competitive today almost 15 years later - mostly because there isn't any BMW left in it.
