Why I HATE Race Swapping. 

I know this is a little off topic, but you're a big inspiration for me. The passion you put into your videos is amazing! Just wanted to say thanks even though we make wildly different content

To me, things feel more authentic when characters are created and kept as is.

I don’t understand why they’re unwilling to adapt actual black characters like Spawn or Static Shock. Spawn would make such a fucking badass movie.

For me, as a Puerto Rican and black man, I would rather see an original character who happens to be Puerto Rican or black, instead of taking a white character and race swapping them. Like my GOAT Spawn for example, I love Spawn

The thing that bothers me about raceswaps is that why the fuck would you wanna raceswap certain characters when your already have well established characters that are already black, asian, japanese, haitian etc

Why I hate race swaps is because not only it is lazy, it's racist because they only see legitimatcy in classic white characters (youngrippa59) and every time they create a "new" character and it's terrible they fall on racism

So, while the idea of a black Red Hood/Jason Todd sounds cool, there's no way that you'd be able to cast a black dude in that role and not expect everyone involved in the decision to get cancelled. It'd be "promoting negative stereotypes about black people", "not all black youth are criminals with loser parents", etc. We live in an age where the colour of your skin determines everything - backstory, character, values. I can't see a world where that'd work. Also, can we get some Asian representation up in here? I'm not Asian and yet I feel like they're pretty much invisible in media these days.

Race swapping in media can be pretty ridiculous, especially when it feels like it's being done just to push a certain agenda. It's one thing for fans to have their own interpretations of characters, but when it's forced on you, it's just cringeworthy. And when they start race swapping real historical figures, that's a whole other level of absurdity. Just imagine being remembered for something important even after 100's of years, only to have your legacy overshadowed by a completely different version of yourself made by some hate all men karen.

I am against ANY race swaps. ANY. You can always create new characters with new names and interesting abilities.

Making Aqualad black in young justice is one of my favorite race swaps (granted it was a completely separate character from OG Aqualad but let's be honest Kal is way cooler then Garth) He was strong, he was natural born leader the other characters good look up too, had cooler powers then Aquaman (electricity and water constructs hell yeaaaah!) and to top it all off, he was the son of pre existing villain, Black Manta! Which adds stuff to the lore and what not. Aqualad was so damn cool in that show. Also getting to become Aquaman in season 3 But him being black wasn't an aspect of his personality. It was just a design choice for the best version of that character.

Facts, reminds me of an native American version of ghost rider from a comic I saw once. It made the pre-existing character unique, made sense with the lore, and added a different perspective. That's what these characters should be about. Adding things of value, not just adding for the sake of looking "Cool".

How about we make Mr Terrific, Cyborg, Vixen, Black Lightning, Static Shockajd the many other amazing DC characters and make them awesome and mainstream? The issue I have with race swapping establish characters is because they never give black characters who are originally black or any other race in the comics a chance and they take the easy way out by race or gender swapping them

I don’t think that any characters should be race swapped. Just be original and make new characters instead. It just makes characters less recognisable and is an unnecessary change just to be more inclusive.

2:54-2:56 Well it's not, because Jason Todd's troubled childhood is not exclusive to us black folks. I grew up in mixed low income neighborhoods, and I knew many white kids who came from broken homes. I knew white kids who could probably steal the hub caps off a car to get some cash, if they haven't already. Although in the end this validates what you said earlier in the video about his race being the sole aspect of his character. Because Jason's backstory could happen to anybody. So writers doing it for DEI reasons would be stupid.

I just want it to be authentic. No DEI or companies using race as a shield for criticism. A character being developed. A character we can see as a person and not just companies pulling something.

I always hated the implication that a non-white character had to be carried by the legacy of an existing and beloved character. Everyone is too scared and insecure to try to stand on their own.

I mostly hate that a lot of race swaps take the place of already existing black characters We got so much more to offer than electricity but they don’t have a big name to them and writers don’t feel like building a big name And it’s hard to push for the og black characters cause weirdos will scream woke over anything with melanin on it 💀

That Jason Todd idea is actually really good. But yeah typically I don't care about race or gender swapping (I used to but nowadays I don't care as long as it's done right) but typically it's done to shield from criticism. Like Rey is basically gender swapped Luke Skywalker in all but name and is written incredibly poorly. But instead of acknowledging it, Disney just writes fans off as "woman haters"

I don’t see Red hood being black. At least not the Pattinson-verse. I could see him in the DCU though. The reason why I feel like him being white is better is because he’s was designed to look like one to one Bruce Wayne except the fact that he went down the opposite path. You made a sex slave black!" What we learn children? Dont race swap a character unless you have a good reason

Same here. I'm African-American and I'm sick to death of all the race swapping. At first I found it amusing and flattering but once they started doing it too much to other characters then I started getting annoyed and insulted. Example Jimmy oslen a red head white guy in the comics and in Superman TAS. Now they flipped him from white to black. All in the name of useless diversity

My thing is why do you have to change characters that are white for no reason instead of actually using characters of that race and making a good movie,tv show or game about them. Making them popular and well liked.

People might have a problem with Jason Todd becoming black, because it'd seem like Batman is his "white saviour".

I know I'm a bit late to comics and superheroes as a whole - hell, my first superhero movie was the 2012 Avengers movie (damn was it good) and I didn't really get into superheroes until 2016/2017. But for me, my one big issue with race swapping is that I want to see an as comic accurate portrayal as possible. That means, how the character looked in the comics should be as similar, if not on point to the actor in live action. It's not that some actors can't pull off some characters (Nick Fury played by Sam Jackson is the only Nick Fury I know, Will Smith playing Deadshot was just cool - he made that movie for me and even Dwayne Johnson as Black Adam had its moments too), but unless the actor is that good and the potential is there, it's always a struggle for me personally to accept, especially when there are some darker skinned heroes who absolutely should take a greater center stage - like Static Shock, John Stewart's Green Lantern, Luke Cage just to name a few examples. I'd even go as far to say new original heroes could be created, because while the classics are always classic, there's nothing wrong with throwing something new into the mix just to spice it up. That's just my opinion I wanted to share. Love your take as always, Demigah.

One of my problems with race swapping nowadays is that often times they alter the characters personality as well because they think it would appeal to those who want more representation, with one of the worst examples being that shitshow called "Velma"

There’s is no reason to even race swamp characters to begin with

The problems are 1: The people being *racial swapped are rarely ever simply that, they're often also given a trait or more normally associated with the racial ethnicity they've been changed to. 2: Only probably 40%, at most, still look like the character but with a different racial ethnicity. Like Hugo in Gotham, Wilson in Ben Affleck's Daredevil and actually Johnny in Fant4stic. And 3: The people behind the *Racial swapping sometimes do it with the wrong character. Like look at 2015's Fant4stic movie, it would have made more sense to turn Ben black instead of Johnny due to the fact that he's got Hood Life, had a rough life growing up and is already the token minority of Fantastic Four in general with him being Jewish (Cuz for some reason now, that's been legally turned into some kind of racial ethnicity instead of just a religion)

Any character that is originally white should remain so, any character that was originally black or non white shouldn't be changed either. My main problem with pop culture is there have been MANY non white characters heroes and villains that have either been killed off or forgotten about. I want to see more of those characters back and ready for action, in addition to brand new characters being created that are non white that doesn't involve any DEI narratives or self inserts. Bloodwynd is a good example, awesome character yet very obscure to non comic book readers. I've had enough of race swapping of any kind.

One definitely had a problem with Iris West being black. Two I would much rather there just be original black character rather then shoehorn stuff in because people NEED to feel special and see themselves in everything.

Plus, doing it with Jason wouldn't be that hard. Problem with most swaps is that people become attached to what came before. Jason is already popular and his fanbase have identified with him. To most, Jason is the angry white boy with the gats. Maybe a good retelling could work. Or you could introduce a character like you mentioned in a Red hood story. A pupil for Jason to mentor while he questions if he's the right person to watch after a kid.

That's a view point i also share, i dont really care about race swap as long as they don't: A) Change the character completely into something they're not or B) Make their skin color their *entire personality.* And unfortunately most change of the color palette is usually one of these two things which is why i like if not love characters like Miles Morales and Val Zod whilst also not liking what they do with characters like Velma for example

I always enjoy your videos. Always great to hear different opinions articulated well. I usually dont like race swapping characters. That being said there are some exceptions and i can see what youre talking about with Jason Todd.

I'm Puerto Rican and Black and a huge fan of miles morales but i don't think they should keep re-doing characters. they should make completely new ones. the situation with riri williams is an example of why it wont work anymore after miles. my fav superhero is Blade and he was an original idea. they just need to be more creative and stop worrying about what the fans think. we aren't writers, we are fans. we don't know what we want until we have it.

I've heard this argument for years now, and it oversimplifies the context around the issue of race swapping. It's not a one-to-one comparison across the board. Every character is an individual with varying degrees of iconography. *I'll elaborate on my thoughts regarding Iris & Nick Fury below, apologies for the length but feedback's welcome:* I'm sorry if this offends any Flash fans, as I grew up loving the character too. But the harsh reality is, relatively speaking, Iris West has not been one of the most beloved or well-known comic book characters to the majority of audiences for decades now. From what I understand of Flash's history (Correct me if I'm wrong), she was NEVER a huge name in DC. She was never and arguably still isn't as well known on average as Lois Lane, Mary Jane Watson, Gwen Stacy, Selina Kyle, Starfire, Barbara Gordon, Vicki Vale, or other iconic romantic interests in comics. She was never such an influential fan-favorite character that literally almost every superhero fan down to kids who've barely read comics knows her name. By contrast, I've met Spider-Man fans so young & new that they know very little about the characters, story, or Peter Parker's relationships. And even THEY, on average, have at least heard of M.J. or Gwen. Even before I read my first Superman comic, I knew the name Lois Lane. Again, I don't say this to put down people that love Iris or Flash. I like Iris too. Being less popular does not make her a poor character by any means. Realistically, however, if you ask 100 people or even 100 Flash fans if they know Iris West, the first version most of them will think of is probably the CW or DCEU's. I don't even recall seeing her in the DCAU, which introduced a whole generation (including me) to the Justice League. Presumably, that was most likely because the DCAU's Flash was Wally West and she's historically associated with Barry Allen. Some fans commonly argue, "How many complained about Iris' portrayal in 1990's shortlived Flash live-action series, which was also different from her comic counterpart?" And that's true. Paula Marshall's Iris wasn't raged at. What most casuals don't know is that the reason her version of Iris wasn't heavily criticized back then is because: *A)* Not a lot of people watched 1990's Flash series. It was a failure that hardly anyone today would even know existed unless they were told or looked it up. I grew up in the 90s, and NOBODY I knew, including die-hard Flash fans, mentioned it. *B)* Superhero media outside of comics was still new in the early 90s. Its biggest success was Christopher Reeve's Superman. Not nearly as many people back then knew about Flash like they would Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, or Spider-Man (who was only just starting to grow popular outside of comics himself thanks to his animated series). *C)* Paula Marshall's Iris only appeared ONCE in the 1990 series' pilot episode where she broke up with Barry before disappearing for the remainder of the show's one season. Her total screen-time adds up to a few minutes at best. If that show debuted today, I guarantee that her take on the character would be criticized too. Comparing reactions to an adaptation of a character that was essentially a glorified cameo in a show almost no one has heard of vs. how fans would react in current year when superhero media is more mainstream than ever is a disengenuous attempt at rebuttal. As for the widely brought up example of Nick Fury: Again, outside of comics and cartoons, not many people knew who this guy was, let alone that he was originally white. He wasn't as big of a name historically as Black Widow. Following 2008's Iron Man, people generally accepted Samuel L. Jackson's casting as him mainly because his performance made Fury more widely appealing in mainstream. Plus, as if I had to even say this, he was played by Sam "motherf***ing" Jackson. We're talking about one of the most beloved actors of the past century. So, OF COURSE he didn't get much flack for playing an originally white character. Even those who did know weren't often attached enough to Fury to care. Jackson's just so popular, he could be cast to play Jesus Christ and probably still win the majority over with his take on the Messiah. The difference is, unlike the MCU's Nick Fury, Iris West has yet to be played in any media by an actor who catapulted her to anywhere near the same heights of fame. As far as I've found in my research, her only non-comic appearances aside from the CW and DCEU have been in DC's animated movies, almost all of which are not connected to the DCAU's canon. Overall, while I'm not always against race swapping, the discussion surrounding it has a history of using Iris or Nick in defenses that can set back the discourse because they're at best false equivalances and at worst bad faith arguments.
