I completely agree with you. I went from playing 8-12 hours a day to playing 4-6 hours a week. Drastically improved my life. And now when I do get time to sit down with my bros and play I genuinely enjoy it. I found myself when I was playing all day to dread the game and my life. When you work hard all week at your job, school, and the gym and you finally get to sit down and play for a bit you’ll find that you’ll enjoy it so much more.

tbf hamza's videos are self help and they were the kick up the ass I needed to start exercising and being productive, they're not mindless videos. But I don't see anything wrong with gaming if you're not addicted and its just to relax. It's no different than watching TV or browsing the internet.

What really weeded me off of video games was the experience of every interaction I had being somewhat negative. A lot of the individuals I talked to over the internet were either depressed or just complained about their life. As a result, video games went from an enjoyable past time, to something I felt no desire or passion in doing.

I’ve fallen out of love with video games, however my life has improved dramatically when i reduced my video game consumption. Throughout the week, I’m working and improving myself. I work on my side hustle on the weekend as well. I have a friend in a different country and we play the game together sometimes on the weekend, But we still talk throughout the week about deep topics regarding masculinity, reading, improvement stoicism etc. he actually introduced me to Marcus Aurelius’ Meditations. I do agree that video games need to go. But I don’t agree that you need to cut out every fun thing in someone’s life. As he said, just don’t get addicted. My step brothers are addicted and justify not going to the gym and playing video games. I feel for them.

Hate is a strong word that should only be reserved for corrupt politicians and literal human monsters who do nothing but make the world a darker place. Normal people with stable lives are allowed to entertain themselves with games and movies and shows. Anything can waste someone’s time and life if they’re not careful. Normal gamers didn’t do anything wrong to make you hate them. In fact, I consider it a sin to hate another human being who is just trying to get by and live their life. Even people who do have gaming addictions shouldn’t be hated, they just need to be guided in the right direction for a better life.

I think the overall message with this and other highly accessible media/entertainment - even youtube is that its too easy to fall into binges or hours on hours and then losing yourself. If you can discipline yourself to cut off in certain timelimits or know when there is somethign that takes precedence then you are set. Its the MINDLESS gaming and the AVOIDANCE of your real problems that video games let you hide from while also making you feel as if you have overcome those obstacles. Balance in anything is key - MA✨

I usually agree a lot with you, but as much as games can consume your life, they won't necessarily do so. I see several people who yes, do get addicted and wake up and go to sleep playing video games all day. I used to compare what I thought was playing a lot and then got to see people with 10s of times more play time on a game than I do on total. But the problem doesn't lie in the hobby of gaming, it lies in someone not administrating the time in their lives. Not all hobbies are necessarily productive or will produce something from their development, not every single of your waking hours are spent on some kind of productive activity. To me, it seems that you've come to resent gaming, probably as your experience (and maybe the spoken experiences of others) with games was really poor, be it from the kind of games you played or why and how you played them. For example, many people play games just to fill in time. That's unproductive and unfulfilling, so if someone had a habit of playing games for the sake of spending time away, no wonder they will resent it when they quit and start doing productive things. Maybe you had a similar experience, I don't know, but it seems that whatever your experience was with gaming, you didn't do it for fun or a passion at all. I've had deep conversations within games, I've made great friends when playing games who I carried into adulthood, I've seen streamers talk about life experiences in game together, I've seen people comment on extracted life lessons they needed to have from playing a game, and so much more. So overall, you speak as if there is only one kind of experience to gaming, but from my (and many others) lived experience, yours on this subject is very limited. Nobody should agree with every single thing someone says, and if they do, they have either not heard much, or they aren't living their own life. From how adamant you feel about this and how confident you are about it, despite being so contradicting with my experience, it definitely makes me start questioning other advice as well

Meanwhile, I've told myself to quit pmo and fallen into it despite not really wanting it. I've gone weeks, months at a time, and still fallen. I agree with Hamza very well. I haven't quit video games for good but I don't play them often anymore because growing my channel, and gym and focusing on delayed gratification seems more worth it to me. I used to play 5-8 hours of video games a day but now I usually end up not playing them for weeks or even months at a time. Playing with other people online doesn't really stand out to me so I play story mode games like GTA V if I do sit down to play video games but other than that the grind is more worth it than video games ever will be!

If you want to improve your mind, but also like your games, one idea I suggest is writing for a while after a gaming session. Write about what hijinks you pulled, what happened in the story that session, what your character's thoughts are (works well with RPGs), anything. A paragraph or two at least after each session. I used to do this after playing Skyrim as a kind of creative project for my character, and personally ended up getting addicted to the writing over gaming. While I myself agree with most of Hamza's thoughts here, I'm not going to tell anyone to stop gaming. However if you're struggling with reading or finding another hobby to really sharpen your mind, writing about your sessions may help. And don't worry if it's shit, nobody needs to see it. Just be creative for a while.

Coming from someone who is big into self-improvement, it’s ok to take some time out of your day for some pleasure, solely for the sake of pleasure. Embracing delayed gratification is an important part of self-improvement, but like anything else, it can be pushed too far. Not everything has to be about productivity. Adonissss.... Adonis doesn't live a life of absolutes. Adonis walks the balance of enjoying life and improving himself to enjoy the future even more. He's constantly self reflective, making sure he's not taking things too far to the detriment of his future self or those around him. He builds his social circle both in person and virtually, forming close connections through a variety of mediums. From someone who’s gone through the same journey, I 100% agree with Hamza. I used to be an absolute addict but I was consciously aware that this isn’t right and that is key to fixing and problem in life. You can’t make up excuses for it. If you’re gonna do it, do it while admitting that you’re wrong. The way I eventually fixed my problem was by deciding to take a clean 3months break. And I promise you life hasn’t ever felt any better. And I’m telling you that it will be hard, but only for the first month. Once you breakthrough that first month, you’ll look back and spit on your old self cuz u will now be so proud of yourself cuz you’re actually building yourself up in those hours that you used to waste. And that’s not to say that you will never get to play. I may play with some old mates once every month or so, but whenever I’m not playing I don’t think about the game and I’m not feeling bad for not playing. And that’s ultimately how you gain control over yourself. The amount of discipline it will take of you to break that bad habit will be huge. But once you do it you will truly be able to achieve anything you put ur mind into. Keep going legends 👊

I play 2-3 hours on the weekend, and when I'm really engaged in the story maybe 4. I like the stories the games tell and the characters in them. I never play video games on the weekend before I do all of my productive things like weightlifting, meal prep, guitar, reading, running, and cleaning. The characters in these games were a massive reason why I started lifting weights and working out seriously a few years ago. Playing DMC inspired me to lose 60 (220 to 160) pounds because I wanted to be like the main characters, and now I am in great health. Your problem was playing grind games like Runescape where you click on things to level your character for 10 hours.

fr video games are a work of art for me and an inspiration for my own work and such.. I actually value the time I spend on it and it''s okay IMO just if you don't spend 10000 hours on league and you don't actually enjoy it ngl We humans see everything as stories and these books, movies and even video games are like that and a work of art we can appreciate. IMO Hamza is generalizing too much. He thinks everyone is like him and views it like him. He sees his younger self, but the same advice is not for everyone. Don't tell someone they can't just because you couldn't. I think that if you don't enjoy it and still waste time of it, it's a waste of time. Some for example actually like spending 1000 hours on something and honing their skills in video games. Whilst others (like me) are there for the relationships the stories to be told and lore to be explored. There are many different kinds of gamers though and this is where I don't know what my point is. My take is that if you enjoy it and it does NOT take over your life and stops you from doing the things you actually want please go ahead. If you have the feeling that you are wasting time than there is a high chance you are. Although, I don't know if everyone CAN have a healthy relationship with video games. But at least I know I have, and I can. so yeah

Here's my thoughts. I play Minecraft. I used to be a much larger Jeffrey, playing minigames and other games as well, and even Minecraft for like 10 hours a day. I used to play it until 4 or 5 am pretty much every day. I still play it, but I interact with it in a healthier way now. My sleeping habit is regular: I go to sleep at 10 and wake up at 7. In terms of my self improvement journey, I've added on one habit every month to break or gain, that I'd keep doing after the month has passed, and I've done that for a few months now. Stopping video games is far down my list, but it's in the 2022 category. I think that I interact with Minecraft in a semi-healthy way because I like to build complex structures and manage resources. I can confidently say that it has definitely made me more creative and look at things in a different way. I will admit that I play it for 3 or 4 hours every day. However, I understand that it's something that I should stop, as it gives me false gratification and purpose, is very stimulating, and takes up a lot of my focus. I'm planning on transitioning off of Minecraft onto other productive hobbies like coding, but I think I should have it after I have a lot of good stable habits woven into my routine, so I don't feel suddenly deprived and break all of them.

I've since emailed Mojang support and had my account permanently erased. A tough step, it's my most beloved game with thousands of hours in it, but it had to be done. I can quit all gaming, and I likely will when I have a job or full time education. If you want to fully erase it, the deletion process is just an email away. Of course, it's a radical and irreversible change, and it erases years of vapid structures. It even is a monetary loss, though I think the game paid back its value. Whatever it takes, though. I read/meditate/work out three, four times as much as I play video games. I only play single player games, that way I can stop and start whenever I want. I think I have found a good balance with them. Yes, at the end of the year I’ve probably spent about 200 or so hours playing them. Yes that’s a lot of time. But it’s time I’m willing to spend playing them because that is the 20% that gives me the 80% of joy. Im willing to sacrifice growth in those 200 hours for some instant gratification.

But that firm and assertive type of passion, is still really valuable, you know? Keep the passion, keep the firmness, keep the assertive qualities, and also present all the truly overwhelming evidence that truly shows people that there are way more cons than pros, and even what they may be using it for, is counter productive. I have to have a very strong and firm similar conversation about weed with people in my community. passion, firmness, present all the evidence. I would say my experience with video games has had one genuinely good effect. About 3 years ago, I started looking into aviation and was fascinated with all the buttons 12 year old me saw on the flight deck, so I asked my parents for a flight simulator and they agreed. I read through manuals, watched videos, hours of trial and error just to learn how to even play the flight simulator and fly the plane. I do however classify it as a game, it does give me alot of overstimulation. Fast forward 3 years, I have decided to pursue an airline career as flying jets TRULY makes me happy, I can save 2k on flight classes due to my prior knowledge which came from video games/ flight sims. However i think this falls more into the category of an esports player that hamza said as they worked on the game and practiced more than they played, which was my case. I don't really play flight sims that much anymore as i have learned the basics and have admitted to myself that i am no longer learning anything new, just flying planes for fun since i have learned a great amount of aviation. In my opinion i think this is a rare case of video games being helpful torwards someone.

I’ve noticed a trend with the things you have become addicted to previously, because you found it difficult to regulate playing video games, smoking weed etc. you assume it’s the same for everyone else, and that it automatically makes someone a loser. It honestly just seems like you have an addictive personality? I’ve never once had a problem with spending way too many hours on a game or smoking too much, and I’ve been doing it for years while also being able to balance the other more important priorities in my life. There’s a way to balance everything in a “healthy” way, you just have to possess the ability to do so. Not everyone is the same, clearly. There’s also a huge market in making good money with video games nowadays, loads of opportunities. It’s definitely not a waste of time if you know how to use that time in a way that benefits you Also, gaming has helped massively with my mental health personally, if it wasn’t for a lot of the games I’ve discovered over the years, as well as some of the channels related to gaming that I watch every now and then, I would have found it very difficult to get through a lot of the things I was going through at the time. I feel like this is something I wont see eye to eye on ever when it comes to your thoughts on video games. I just feel like what we were surrounded by and how we used video games differs alot. Maybe im the exception or in the majority of people that really doesnt see anything inherintly wrong with it. Im definitely not addicted i can go months without playing them, i only play with my friends or story driven games on my own sometimes, but im never spending more than 3 hours max on a game. The friends I have that play video games are some of the coolest people ive met. Hard working, humble, we always have deep conversation, we uplift each other we go to the gym together. This is probably because most of my friends are muslim so naturally we are always looking to improve ourselves and are all on this self improvement journey. I feel like the video game bad argument can apply to alot of people that are not of faith or people with just little to no self control in general (which can also apply to people of faith). For these type of people then yes i somewhat agree with you that they will probably have to let go of video games to actually progress, but alot of people can balance this and still get far. My friends and family are proof of this and alot of my cousins and friends are doing well for themselves mentally and physically but they still play video games. Thats just my opinion though and I know it wont convince you, just wanted to put my view out there and see if people related to my circumstance since im sure many do. that's kind of what i am experiencing too. from a young age i was always conditioned by my parents to only play videogames on weekends so it became an unconcious habit of mine for my entire life. Everytime i even try to play videogames on weekdays even though it was a holiday it still felt wrong to me so even on holidays i only play on weekends, and now that i am in highschool and is in a lot of organizations it's becoming very rare for me to even find time to play videogames on weekends, max playtime that i could get on a non busy day is 3 hrs and that's a rare case since now every single one of my assignments and tasks are online and is always strictly monitored, it took me about 9 months just to beat Batman Arkham city lol, but i still enjoy videogames very much and i am feeling very conflicted because while i love videogames, Hamza completely despises it and i love Hamza too man. i've always just tried to ignore what he says about videogames but it always lingers in the back of my mind what if videogames are exactly what hamza is telling me and that it's ruining my life. I'm perplexed

My best friend who is now my room mate is someone i met on csgo like 10 or so years ago, and hes someone whos done so much in my life that i would genuinely die for without blinking. I game, i stream sometimes, but it isnt somthing that takes over my life, and thats alot to say considering that i have austim. Gaming isnt a sin and i dont believe theres anything wrong with it, i get where hes coming from but i will never agree. While i do agree that going out in nature ect and experiancing life is very important and that anything god made is superior, i enjoy gaming, i check up on my friends that i used to work with in highschool and game with them from time to time. But i understand hamza and realise that his hate for games and many other things isnt a entirely a problem with self improvement but with improving himself, its how he views himself and things he deals or has dealt with personally. Im completely against people being absorbed in any kind of media, or idulging in degeneracy (playing porn, indulging in netflix abominations, tiktok ect) but to say that gaming or even the consept of it is somehow somthing that should garner hate of not only the medium but people is something that i will never be able to agree with.

I know I'll get backlash for this but I genuinely believe there is some form of balance in the self improvement journey and playing the game, I personally do my best to constantly improve and better myself and Hamza is a big inspiration to me and I agree with alot of things that he says but this topic is something that I'm mixed on. I'm genuinely lost as to there can't be a balance between playing games and being an "Adonis"/better person cause I wanna be the best me that I can be but I also don't want to lose something that's apart of me. I love meditation, reading and working out but I also love playing games as a hobby to relax and connect with my irl friends especially with some of us living in different towns. I've always tried to create a perfect balance between the two as I hardly game and would rather do self improvement stuff or study for school. If anyone has advice on how to create a balance or how to improve pls comment down

I have taken a backseat to videogames, and now I can see, it's instant gratification, just like junk food and I have struggled and still struggle to admit it. Humble yourselves and put yourselves in the shoes of a man who hasn't played videogames, now you start playing videogames for one hour a day, wouldn't you feel like you could use that time for something more fulfilling? Personally this is my Jeffrey experience. About 3 years ago I found someone that was a lot like me. I was really lonely so he was my first friend and we played everyday pretty much for about a year. We were going to the same school everyday it was really fun. I think during that first year we had a group we would walk with at school during breaks and some people from that group started playing games too with us. And we played regularly during those times too. This last summer, I played every night for about 3-6 hours with the "first friend". To be honest I don't really regret it too much. We had a lot of fun. I think Hamza played games where you rarely interact with people. I was playing csgo and it's pretty fun to mess around, troll, have fun and also be somewhat competitive. I have a lot of fun memories from it. But I found hamza at the end of December. I didn't play as much with my friend after that summer because I have to commute a long time to uni and I don't really feel like playing competitive games even though I found them really fun. So I went from playing everyday to once a week. And yesterday I played again from a 2 week break. I really didn't want to. I kind of hated the idea. I kinda felt forced to cause I was playing every week but I didn't for 2 so I was like, ok maybe I should play and socialise with my friends a bit. It was a lot of fun and genuine laughter during that time. I suggest if you're like me (introverted) and you don't mind talking to the group chat daily instead of playing games daily with them, do it once a week. You will see the beauty in taking the break and also the beauty in having fun with your group. I do also want to get my first friend onto self improvement once I believe I am good enough myself.

I am one of the Jeffrey's and I got through the video. The biggest thing for me is what would happen with my irl friendships. Videogames aren't very enjoyable for me anymore after growing up playing them with my older brother since I was 5 on the N64 (25 now). I think ditching videogames and replacing them with good habits like cooking, working out, reading, hiking, and meditating sounds amazing. But my main friend group and my older brother who is the best friend I have ever had have built our relationships on videogames. I grew up watching my brother play videogames and playing multi-player games with him, coop games, runescape even for a bit. I don't know how I can completely abandon it or my friends. I will not abandon my brother and other really close friend/roomate of 3 years, luckily my brother is getting most of his life away from videogames with having his first kid a year ago, so we bond over life and advice for each other. Hamza, I mostly agree with you here. You do take a rather extreme take on video games, but rightly so. How pervasive they've become in society can be used as an excuse but perhaps it should be viewed as a red flag. While I believe you can be healthy and play some video games, I agree that escapism, addiction, overstimulation and obsessing over games is very real and that a lot of gamers fall into these traps whether or not they're aware. As others have said, I think it comes down to time management and priorities. If you aren't playing games to avoid some responsibility or wreck your sleep schedule, I'd say they're fine to enjoy in the same way that you can enjoy music, resting or any other leisure in moderation. You bring up some good points for competitive shooters especially since they command your attention in an unnatural way (convincing your brain you're doing something important.) I'd also note that for people with ADHD and addictive personalities it can be a more difficult vice to quit, and perhaps these people should be extra careful with where they're putting their time. I would ask anyone to call their use of games and other pastimes into question as a threat to their priorities and health. In the last year or so I've grown apathetic over most games across the board in the realization that I wasn't getting out enough, and I despise the online nature of most games and how they tend to pull you in with limited time events and things. I recommend older console games and more "self contained" singleplayer experiences for that reason. Love you guys and stay strong.

I do think that if you play video games but you don't even go to the gym, you have your priorities wrong, but being against entertainment altogether isn't a reasonable position to take, I do think it's too much to play everyday, but a couple times a week, or a couple weekends a month seems perfectly healthy if you at the very least have job and go to the gym every week. Life is too harsh to never have the time to sit down and enjoy a movie, or watch an interesting documentary, listen to a good audiobook, or play a video game, having guilt free fun is also important along as you also have other more meaningful hobbies like going to the gym, learning languages or acquiring marketable skills.

Well said mate. I've been on self improvement on & off for 4 months. Honestly I'm really damn shit at it. I'm 13 (Yr 8) and I work out 6 days a week and I go on moderately long runs every day. I know the obvious solution to the situation I'm in but I don't have the balls to take action. I turned into an introvert when I started year 6 because of the covid lockdown when I downloaded discord. There I entered a discord server of a few people in my year level who were all mega-jeffreys, but I didn't know anything about that concept. I started to play minecraft 8+ hours a day and was introduced to anime (bad habit) by my friends. Fast foward to halfway through year 7 for me when my school had lockdown the entire year, I randomly decided that I wanted to fulfill my 7 year old dream of becoming actually strong. I started working out but I was still playing games 12+ HOURS A DAY and I was going to sleep at averagely 3am every night. Fast foward again to now; I believe I have a pretty good knowledge of the goings on around me and I will: 1. Stop video games 2. Stop being beta in conversations 3. Reclaim aggression (Not in bad way of course) 4. GO TO SLEEP AT A REASONABLE TIME (This has EASILY been my biggest struggle) 5. Maintain workout consistency (Yeah yeah; see how I said 'maintain'?) 6. Stay productive each day 7. find some new friends... (This one is harsh but some of my current friends are like a 9.5/10 on the Jeffrey scale If anyone wants to criticize me how I assume I will be criticized: "YeAh BuT yOu KnOw ThAt Ur NoT gOnNa AcTuAlLy Do ThOsE tHiNgS rIgHt?" - predicted Jeffrey ^ Then shut the fuck up. I'm putting these online so I get some pressure to do them. SOMEONE SCREAM AT ME

I think the number 1 reason why people think playing video games is a waste of time is because they think that every single gamer is addicted to gaming. It seems that you are one of those people that think that every gamer sleeps at 2am and every single gamer plays 12 hours a day never ever going outside and never ever being productive, all because YOU were addicted to gaming. Unless you are/were addicted to gaming, has it ever occurred to you that you can practice self-improvement and do all those amazing things you're doing right now and STILL be a gamer? I'm fully aware that some gamers are addicted to video games, and that's really bad. I just think that anybody who assumes that all gamers are addicts and wasting their life, and tells themselves that they're practicing self-improvement, is NOT developing self-improvement at all. I'm not saying you should go be a gamer, but don't judge those who ARE.

I disagree hard bro, video games are an art form like films or music. Depends what you play and how you play though I guess. And if you wanna talk about reading, games like disco elysium and planescape torment are introspective stories that make you think as deep as any other fiction would, and have fun doing it. I feel like what you are talking about is a culture of gaming and playing competitively (not having fun) and you do have a point there. Games like cod or even tekken (which i rate) where you are sinking time into it to improve a skill for no tangible gain is arguably a waste. But the thing about not making real friends is kinda bs that's just your experience.

And I'm not saying it's "productive" but if I'm gonna choose anything to do in my downtime it's gonna be something I genuinely love to do.

Yeah COD and fifa might be trying to f.ck your wallet but to compare zelda, gothic, deus ex etc etc to porn addiction is just straight wrong and I know it's because we just live in different worlds but I hope one day you can stop holding yourself back from something that can be fun and meaningful and not at all harmful.

I agree with you mate, I think this viewpoint about no videogames etc. is a bit extreme. If you enjoy videogames then that is fine, play for a bit after working hard, really do not understand the genuine disgust towards playing with mates for a bit

Video games are for kids though, lets be honest they are kid entertainment, once you reach 18 your just wasting your time

I watched the hole video and I am someone who is addicted to videogames. However I completely agree with you, my plan is to keep playing the game until I get board of it witch has happened before with this game, and then to not find a new game to get addicted to, wish me luck. And thanks for the videos Hamza.

Heard somewhere that education is about poking where it hurts. It is hard to accept an activity as stimulating as gaming is not worth it. Hamza is not saying what I want to hear, but he is saying what I need to hear.

Just because you don't want it, doesn't mean you need it. Remember that.
