This is not a new model by any stretch and it's been reviewed to death. However, I thought it would be interesting to explain why I recently got one given the fact that I already have a lot of knives (and a lot of Spydercos).
Ha, you're story of your decision process on how you arrived at the Native is identical to my own! It's like the perfect marriage between the other two knives. I just picked up the Cutlery Shoppe exclusive in S90V with DLC blade for my birthday. I love these knives to death! Definitely my new favorite Spyderco. :)
It was my manix 2 LW and a similar thought process that led me to buy the Sage 5 LW , which I should receive tomorrow. The compression lock, the deep carry wire clip and full liners steered me to the Sage instead of the Native. What a deal on the s35vn on your native. Those days are gone.
I pulled out my LC200n native 5 in front of one of my British relatives. She thought it was a Swiss Army knife. I guess it looks more like a tool than I thought. Nice vid
Speaking of people not knowing how to operate locks I let my uncle see my new zt0450 and he failed to flip it with his thumb somehow and it has a strong detent then when he tried to close it the simple frame lock he pushed the lock bar towards the cf even over the detent ramp. He then handed me the knife to unlock and I did luckily have had no lock up issues after that
Picked up the Native 5 LW Salt with a blue MXG clip and as a do-it-all outdoor EDC it's dang near perfection. While out placing boating buoys for work I accidentally dropped it into Lake Ontario. After a few dives I found it covered in silt about 20 feet down (thank you yellow handle). Words can't describe how nice it is having a cutting tool that I don't need to fuss over. A quick spray with a garden hose and some compressed air was all it took to de-grit the action (along with some nano-oil to smooth things over). The LC200N also took a 17 degree-ish convex really well and makes touch ups a breeze while out hunting. Probably the best impulse purchase I've ever made. If Spyderco came out with a PM3 Salt or Native 5 LW Salt with a compression lock I'd be in heaven!
Bought a DF2 in ZDP 189 a few years ago, but don't carry. because it is too small. Got a Native 5 LW and it is 50% of my weekly carry, just a perfect grip/size for me.
I enjoy my Native 5, its so light it's like carrying a Delica but it feels great in the hand. Now that I have the Para 3 with a deep carry pocket clip I don't carry the Native 5 much.
Would you comment more on your perspective regarding any additional 'burden' the Para 3 represents in pocket day to day vs. the Native 5? Do you have the lightweight version? I have that, which is why I ask. I'm not getting along well with a new Sage 1 on premises (due for reluctant return, I think -- not a fit for me... too many "ouchies"!). Also, same judgement for inside sweats or shorts in summer? Thanks!
Frederick J. I don't feel that the Para 3 is much bigger or anything. It is heavier than the Native 5 lightweight. I can't flick the Native open like the Para 3. I just enjoy the compression lock a lot more.
I’ll take FRN scales over G-10 every time. Lighter and not as “grippy” in the pocket as G-10. Native 5 in Maxamet is amazing. I have ZDP Delica and XHP techno 2 and Maxamet beats those hands down.
Hey, Bryan, what have you decided to do about lubricating the Native 5 LW? I have a new one here like yours. I checked out some number of online threads specific to the blade-on-plastic Native 5 LW and lubricants, and I can tell you opinions were all over the place. Some purported veteran users of this type of Spyderco construction said they've settled on zero lube as best. That approach kind of stirs up the Nervous Nellie in me, I have to admit. I have Ballistol and now Nano-oil on hand. Then there's "dry lube", of course... 😲.
Cool vid. Do u still have your delica saber ground. I know you dont love the two blade cold steel lucky, but if ya dont use the delica, we can trade if ya like. Lol. Mine is the xhp version
The code 4 is now is s35vn for $66 and the LA police gear is $45 s35vn knife. Never owned the lapg just know about it. But these are both much bigger knives not coin pocket friendly at all.
Don't understand why people like deep carry clips on everything. Standard Spyderco clips allow you to draw knife with gloves, and in cold weather where dexterity is low. This is not an out to dinner and date night knife.
I still love my Native 5 knives. I got one in SPY27 and with a titanium upgrade/deep carry clip, it is only 2.35 oz. Great knife for EDC and not afraid to beat on it. It is a little larger than I normally try to carry for EDC, but at that weight, it is not bad.
@@manuelacosta4495 Honestly can't tell much difference from S30v. But I think it is easier to machine and sharpen, so can do different things for Spyderco. I'd say worth it and comparable to other very good steel, but depends on geometry, use. I've been happy with it. (plus, as us nerds/collecters are in a habit of, we like variety, hahaha. Beware!)
I've been resisting the urge to get oneof those for years now. I figure I've your enough back locks. I have the Delica 4 flat ground; it's great; much more slicey than the models with thicker blades. The ergonomics are good to very good to me, but I have short fingers. There's no option to choke up, but then again, there's no option NOT to choke up, on the Native. Maybe a Compression lock Native is in order?
Ok... I need to know... why Spyderco vs Benchmade in general? I have avoided Spyderco for various reasons and did get into Benchmade, have a 940, a north fork.... mini grip... a bunch of Buck... thinking about getting a manix or native... but need to convince the wife... but is it really worth it?!
Slicey Dicey why would you choose one over the other (Brand speaking)? I have been a Benchmade fan for a while now.... is it really worth having a Spyderco?
Chris Reuther Generally Spyderco ergos are better I reckon. But the price for that is the width in the pocket (Manix2 and Para and military models) More steel choice and locking mechanisms with Spydies over BM. Mostly full flat grinds which can be slicier. Whereas many BM are Saber grinds. A 940 won't be as slicey as a Para2. But the again, the PM2 is bulkier, has a poorer blade to handle ratio and a less robust tip. Definitely worth getting one model to see what you think. I like BM, especially the Osbourne models. I went for the Knifeworks exclusive Contego and 940. But I have more Spydercos.
