The D700 is still one of my favourite cameras. It’s solid and produces excellent photos. I would agree, black and white is amazing. It’s a trustworthy camera and never disappoints.

I currently use two. I used a d7000 for almost 10 years. I just recently managed to get the money together for a d750. Since the d750 is full frame, until I can afford some new lenses, I am only using my 50mm lens on it. That leaves my d7000 for my 10-24mm and 18-105mm lenses. So each camera has a role, and I'm glad to have the old one still in use.

You can give it a try with apsc lenses on the D750 - sometimes it works, and only with limited vignetting.

Well done Frederick! I agree with you! I have a D800 for landscapes, D300 & D300s for editorial & I just got a brand new F4s for fun & to get me thinking again! I just love this camera!!! It was my main camera from 1989 - 2001 until it got stolen in the media room at the Mtl. Jazz Fest. The one I just got from Japan for $150 delivered. It amazingly arrived brand new. It never had batteries or film in it. I fell in love all over again. I will be processing BW film again.

I had a D700 years ago, and really liked that camera. Currently have a D4, D750, Z6, and just got a D780. The D750 has easily been my most favorite camera, but now that I've been shooting with the D780, I think the crown jewel now goes to that camera. It's a lot like my D750, how it handles, but man, they have really improved it!!!! The D780 is a GREAT camera. Thank u for uploading this video. Really enjoyed it.

Thank you SO MUCH for sharing this information Steve! It is not many that are willing to admit (with your lineup) that the D750 is their favorite, but in my stable it is my "go to" camera for problem free shoots, i.e. when I just want a camera that delivers over and over again. Really interesting to read your remarks about the D780 - I have always felt it was like going back in time, but the ability to re-use the vintage lenses with mechanical AF is a big plus that say the Z6 does not offer. If you have more info as to why the D780 is a great camera, I am all ears!

@@frederikboving Well, in all honesty, I'm simply a point and shoot guy. I shoot in manual mode most of the time, as I do understand how the camera works, but when it comes to posing models and different light (you know, stuff that actual photographers do!!), that's just out of my league. So, my fav shooting is sports, and that's why I like the DSLR's over the mirrorless. I bought the Z6 a month before the D780, thinking it was gonna be my new sports lens, as I really wanted better high ISO performance than what the D750 and D4 would give, but I found the battery performance lacking in the Z6 and I just didn't care for the fast continuous shooting modes on the Z6. So, I picked up a camera that i really liked, a hopped up D750, enter the D780!!!! I love the high ISO performance on the Z6/D780, and I'm just comfortable with the D750/D780 layout. High school football starts in 2 weeks, and I have high expectations with the D780 and my Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8!!! :)

Hi. Do you think there has been some image quality evolution in the 700/750/780 series purely in image quality? I know there is the megapixel gap with the d700 but lets also ignore that. How do the colors and textures "microcontrast" compare? They all use different sensors and processors so it would be interesting to know since there seems to be so much bias online about the d700 images... Does it really have better colors? Thanks.

Absolutely loved this video! Back in 2016, I owned only one 700D/T5i from Canon, and I used it immensely throughout those years shooting anything and everything and learning photography in general, it is when I went to shoot events and portraits in the studio did I upgrade to the M50 for the faster af, making the 700D my backup camera. Last year, I bought myself a 1100D/T3 second hand to be able to drive my passion of shooting streets and not be scared of breaking my main cameras (700D and M50) as they were integral in my business. And just yesterday, I snatched a great deal on a barely used 700D (that will be the new backup camera, as the old one has 200K+ shutter actuations on it!). Loved the vid overall and your analogy as well! It's just so much fun to see me basically looping back in a circle, going back to the 700D after all this years haha!

Hi Frederick. I recently purchased a D3s to use along with my D500. Had to try full frame, as previous bodies were D70 then D3400. It was a revelation. If D500 is a scalpel, the D3s is Rambo's First Blood survival knife. Solid, dependable and made to work with you through anything. A perfect pair. Frederik, What a unique and refreshing perspective for a video. I love it. Three great camera bodies you have there. And your comparison and evaluation of all three cameras was informative, and interesting. I was drooling seeing that 135 DC on the 700. I’d love to have that on my D700. I hope to pick up a used D4 one of these days. I kind of understand your opinion on the colors of the D700, and I might add, they seem more natural and subdued to me, with a tonal quality, not unlike the best films of a bygone time. I do use the ‘Vivid’ picture control, when I want to punch up the color some. I will have to try the B&W option. I have to admit; I don't use that too much on digital. I do B&W on film. I can agree totally with 2/3 of the post. That’s only because I don’t have a 750 so can’t comment. My third FX is an 810, which I prefer for landscapes due to the higher mp. The D4 is a choice for wildlife but, face it, it’s great for everything if you’re willing to lug it. The premise of this post is right on; the best tool for the job may require multiple choices.

I also have a bunch of professional grade film cameras and they to still do the job and the popularity of film is making a comeback! When someone looks at a 11x14 taken with my Sony a900 or Nikon D800 or Canon 5Ds they have no idea what camera took the picture, they just know they like it because it's sharp with beautiful detail!

I am in the same line of thought. I however did not think too much of a d4s as a landscape camera though I have used it for landscapes many times. I am using a d700-d810 and a d4s that I purchased used with less then 800 clicks and for less then 1200.00 dollars. What a tank of a camera. My other 2 Nikons are the d70 and d200 which I hardly use. My first real camera was the Nikon F2as I bought in the mid 1970's. How I miss that camera and my little darkroom. Thank you for a informative and interesting video. @chesterjohnson4504
@chesterjohnson4504 3 года назад
@@frederikboving Hi. That is a hard call to make. The 810 should be and probably is the better of the 3 cameras I use for landscape. The d4s is big, heavy and built like a tank but I have a hard time taking a poor picture from the d4s. It is fast and a perfect general use camera which can and has worked in all types of environments. The d700 is a wonderful camera as well. At 68 years old the d4s is becoming an effort to carry. I think a good combo for me would be the d810 and a d500. It is hard to leave the d4s at home even with the weight of the camera. I do not shoot videos, the d850 would be over kill for my use.

Thank you Fredrick for an excellent comparison review. I cannot help but think of this camera (D700) as an artists tool brush. My D7100 is an easy over-the-shoulder sling with any DX lens. 24 megapixels (my Limit) gives me extreme detail, color and setting options that are never ending. It was the Nikon flagship back in 2013/14 and15. The D700 was out of this world when it was in production for professional use. The sensor developed by Nikon engineers was handed over to Sony for production and never found it’s way into any other Nikon. So the D700 remains a one-of-a-kind camera. And what a camera it is!

Hi Brad! Good question! You know the D700 apparently, so not much I can tell you there I guess? Great for B&W IMHO. The D3 you also know. I don't, but assume the D4 that I do know is the same goodness, only more of it (resolution, FPS, dynamic range, etc). I love my D4 for its colors and ergonomics, but it is not exactly small and light. Nor is the D700 with a battery pack. I notice that you shoot a with strobes and also that dynamic range is important. If you promise not to tell anyone, I actually prefer my good old trusty D750 every time I shoot with flash. And I do that a lot as I shoot products for my blog. For some reason that I have not yet figured out, I grab the D750. It is just so easy to use and does not talk back. Yes, relative to the D700 and the D4 it is a flimsy plastic feeling to lift that camera, but it just gets the job done. And as it is the youngest of the 3, it probably also has the best DR (I have not checked the spec sheet, but younger normally means better DR). So I am abit surprised to conclude that with 1. and 2. above, then I would probably grab my D750. Hope this helps. (PS: I never bring my D750 to the beach or the like - that is reserved for the tank named D4. Horses for courses).

Uh, I have not had the pleasure of shooting with all FX cameras from the enthusiast range. I can say that if you by low light performance mean ability to auto focus in low light, then the D750 is a monster! It literally sees in the dark! D700 is awesome for portraits, probably what it is best at, and it seems like the sensor was designed specifically to render skin tones. In a sense, 12MP is a benefit for most portraits in that there isn't too much unflattering detail in people's faces that your eyes gets drawn to. I don't shoot BW much, but it makes sense it would render BW good as the noise it produces is somewhat subtle/subdued and doesn't deviate much in color variation from the ambient colors of the adjacent pixels (the D200 was really good in this regard to). This is in contrast to many other cmos sensors which produce noise with flamboyant bright random colors like pink and green, ect, which has a very unnatural look that is reminiscent of static from an old crt tv. I'm sure a d4s produces incredible files as well, but it's in a completely different price category and you could also buy some pretty good lenses with the money saved.

I have never owned a D850 but many consider it one of the best DSLRs ever made. The price however for me led me to find alternatives. The D700 is loved by many portrait photographers due to the rendering of skin tones. The D4 imho has the most beautiful color rendering I have ever seen in a camera. So if you are after some of these features then the D4 and D700 still has something to offer the D850 cannot. The D750 I would think is surpassed by the D850 in all aspects. So if you are not after some of the features where the D4/D700 has an edge, then yes, the D850 can cover them all!

I really enjoyed watching this. I own both a d700 and a d750 and I've been long wanting to get a pro-body. Mainly because I like tactile buttons and not delving into menus. The d3S is a bit older than I like and the d5 and d6 seem to be specifically tuned for high ISO performance, and don't have the best dynamic range at low ISOs. So it looks like the d4/d4s for me and perhaps the d4s because I do like using Group-AF in the d750. My d750 has a terrific sensor output in terms of dynamic range, color and low light focusing and results there. Could you care to comment specifically on whether the D4 is as good as the d750 or better in terms of both base ISO and low-light i.e. high ISO performance?

www.flickr.com/photos/frederikboving/albums/72177720312083922 - Hi, I have put in a series of test shots from a low light scene (see the linked flicker album). You can see that the first images are shaken (the camera sat on a table) as the shutter speed is slow at low ISO's. The D750 is a 2 year younger camera and it shows: the EXPEED4 processor suppresses noise better than the D4 (EXPEED 3), but the D4 is not doing bad at all when going up to 12800 - I would say that these images are absolutely usable although there is more noise / grain than when shot at base ISOl!

@@frederikboving Yep - the d4 redeems itself fairly well. Thanks very much for sharing that. The d750 is fantastic though, when WB is set properly - in real world scenarios for the subjects that I shoot I either dial it in manually, or when possible use a white balance card - the latter method when employed allows the d750 to produce fantastic color results even in jpgs SOOC. Its fairly neutral reproduction of color IMO sets it apart from my d700 which has a slightly yellower or in some cases warmer tint. Ideally I'd like the d750's sensor in a pro-body and with 10 fps or greater. The d5 or d6 are definitely not that. I don't need the added burden of higher mps like in the d850 and the d780 is good - but no vertical grip. Looks like I will try out an extended rental of the d4s.

I actually enjoy the d primes, particularly the 85, 105 and the 180 - there seems to be magic combining them with the d750. There exists a similar albeit slightly lesser magic to photos I've taken with the d700 coupled with the 50 1.8g and the 85 1.8g. I do see an advantage for the d780 - focus peaking to use with a manual focus 105 1.8 AI - not a lens that I have, but would get should I opt for the d780.

Pictures that I've taken so far with the 85 1.4d, 105 f2 dc etc. are biting sharp and with great bokeh and falloff etc. Color saturation is very pleasing - once you get white balance right, skin tones are gorgeous. Hi Michael, thanks for sharing! Maybe I missed the point and maybe there is something about the changed flange distance for the Z-mount, but is it not possible also to adapt vintage Minolta and Konica glass also to the f-mount and hence the D4? With regards to the image quality D4 vs Z6, then I have no first hand experience with the Z6, but looking at the spec sheets compare, the Z6 clearly is the winner. However, with the lessons learned from shooting with an old 12MP camera like the D700, I have come to learn that the spec sheet is not all there is to the image quality. But I would be surprised if the D4 and the Z6 did not both deliver image quality on a very high level that would satisfy most needs.

Hello Mr. Boving, I am a D750 owner myself and use only ai(-s) and af-d lenses. With this background I am thinking to invest in a second body. I am thinking about the D4 or DF. My focus is (obviously) the sensor and its fantastic reputation of the colors and total image output. Since I am using a camera specific DCP Profile from Bobalt Image for my D750, I was wondering if you are familiar with these profiles. In case you are not, I could offer to send the one for the D750 to you and you could compare images with this profiles against the files of the D4. I would be highly interested if the images of the D4/DF are noticeably better or if its not a big of a difference. Sorry for the long comment, buts it is a tricky topic. I hope to hear from you. I really enjoy your laid-back non hectic videos. Your approach to photography and gear is quite similar to mine, that's why it would be interesting to compare the output of different cameras with cobalt profiles. Maybe finally only one body is needed (for colors at least...). Kind regards, Sebastian

@frederikboving Год назад
Hi Sebastian, no I do not know of the mentioned profile unfortunately. In my experience color rendition is super subjective and difficult to assess for anyone but the individual photographer, so I think the best way forward I think is for you to rent or borrow a D4 and see how you find it. This video to me illustrates how small the differences are across brands and why other factors than the camera matter more: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Y85y58FUsSI.html I have looked at the Df. It is an expensive camera with questionable ergonomics and an AF focus system from the budget FF camera D610. I am not a fan. I think Nikon aimed high with Fuji in mind and missed entirely - they should have stayed in their lane IMHO. Sorry if this comes across as negative, but it is my honest opinion. All the best!

I couple the 750 with two vintage zooms (28-105 & the 70-210, both AF-D) and that's all the kit I need for a large percentage of what I shoot. A small bag an extra battery, and a polarizer and I'm ready to go. The 850 serves me well on a tripod with the same Tokina macro, or select vintage tele lenses of Nikons, the objective being working higher resolution short distance pano landscapes (streetscaoes, villaagescapes) of various sorts. Why is the d700 not profesional level? What Makes a profesional nikon? Only the single digit nikon cameras are the pros? Im learning yet.
@frederikboving
@frederikboving 3 года назад
It's Nikons own classification ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Nikon_DSLR_cameras ). I think their requirements to a flagship/pro-level camera are extremely high, both that it has to be at the forefront of what is technically possible (dynamic range and FPS), it has to be extremely durable (water, dust, abuse), and it has to have a life expectancy beyond all all cameras in the Nikon lineup. That said, many professionals make a good living shooting with what Nikon call enthusiast cameras.

The D700 is one of the best ever made, you’d do well to own it...and NEVER sell it.
@bfs5113
@bfs5113 3 года назад
Maybe trickle-down D3's technology to a high-end body (D300) arrived too early, and photographers called the D700 as a baby D3 also added to the confusion. If one followed Nikon's heritage of pro and semi-pro F series SLR, it even created a separate brand, Nikkonmat or model such as EM for its consumer line of SLR. Just like some people use the Nikon D7000 series or Canon M50 to earn their livings, that does not imply the cameras should be under the manufacturer's professional category. Rather a testament of excellent quality even with their affordable line of cameras.

With the greatest of respect Sir , surely the D700 is considered a professional body by you Pro photographers?.
@frederikboving
@frederikboving Год назад
Thank you for your question! If you ask Nikon, I am pretty sure they will categorise the D700 as an "enthusiast level" camera and not professional. The professional version of the D700 is the D3 as far as I know. With the Nikon D700, Nikon made a mistake they have not repeated: their enthusiast level camera in terms of quality and specs came too close to their professional series. In other words, the D700 is so close to the D3 that many cannot see the point upgrading to the D3. If you are a pro, you can make a good living with a "enthusiast level" camera. And many do. I have seen wedding photographers using the Nikon D750 (see for example applehead studios here: ru-vid.com/group/PLPjooVCTLG92YegK07j3cNdCThupSdSJ- ). Where I would be a bit cautious using the D700 for professional work is that it only has 1 card slot, and for event photography you run the risk that the card may fail and the entire shoot is lost. That does not go down well with a newly married couple. So many (event) pros use the D700 as a backup camera and not the primary one. Hope this helps and clarifies.

I can't for the life of me understand camera people! If someone has a nice stamp collection. No one says anything! If someone collects works or art worth millions...not a peep! Some guys have exotic car collections...so quite you can hear a mouse piss on cotton! Display a wonderful collection of camera's and all the haters come out! Like you, I have seven Nikons also. The D3s, D4s, D700, D850, F5, F3hp and F2. We also have a lot of the same Nikon lens. I like collecting Nikons and if the haters can't do what we do, that's their problem.

How do you like your d850? I am thinking of obtaining a d850 or go for broke and try a Z7ii or Z6ii. I use my d4s 80% of the time then the d810 and on occasion the d700. I just find the D4s so easy to use and with the rainy and humid environment of Mississippi I just feel comfortable with that camera though the d810 and d700 would work well in the weather I live in too. I used my D4s 100% of the time when I visited my home state of Wyoming a few weeks ago. I thought I had made a terrible mistake but the landscape images I have processed have turn out nicely.

His conclusion is that the use of lighting etc is has much more influence on the images than the camera, and I think he is right. Personally I find that my color tweaking in post changes the original image so much that the color rendition of the original is insignificant.

The d700 is an old camera. Live view is quirky to mention one thing that bugs me. But it is still and in many ways a great camera and it will fulfill many photographers needs. And imho sensor technology has not really made any major leaps forward for the last 10 years so for bare bone photography the D700 with a good f-mount lens is all you need. Only if you shoot astral images or some super specialized macro photography I can see a point in upgrading gear.
