Hi, welcome to ShuoshuoChinese 说说中文; my name is Shuo, I’m a native Chinese teacher living in Bangkok, Thailand, I’ve been teaching Chinese as a foreign language for more than 10 years and I’m also a language learner.
In this channel, I will upload a weekly video, in which I talk about Chinese vocabulary, Chinese grammar, Chinese culture, Chinese stories with pinyin and the English translation for listening practice.
With my channel, you can easily start to learn and understand complicated Chinese grammar, sentence structure, and differences/nuances between similar Chinese words.
If you are a Chinese beginner, I’m planning to upload videos about what Chinese language is, how it differs from English, Chinese pronunciations, Chinese characters and Chinese stroke sequences and a mini Chinese course, (10 minutes per day), which can help you learn quickly and easily. Don’t miss it!

I am just a beginner and I thought maybe I could understand about half, however, I think I understood 90% because you speak so clearly and at a pace that my brain can just keep up with. Also, your story was extremely captivating so I was fully engaged. I have lived and worked in many countries in Africa, the Middle East, and Asia and I can relate to how difficult it is for so many people to find their place in this world. Most are trapped and have to just accept their pre-arranged life. You are an inspiration to others. I am so happy I found your channel, you have a great talent in teaching. You should have far more subscribers. I will be following all your videos and making comments from now on. THANK YOU.

Unfortunately, the physical Mandarin school I was supposed to start studying at here in The Netherlands got shut down because of the Covid 19 situation. Yes, that is a true statement! Having known many Chinese people and lived in China, I learned that most of them do have that way of thinking about the world. They think there are two basic groups of people: Chinese and “foreigners”. Chinese often have misconceptions that “Chinese people do things this way, and foreigners do things that way.” Really, there are many different cultures in the world. Chinese culture is just one among many, and there are no generalizations that can be made about “foreigners”.

Both China and the US have extremes of culture: excessive collectivism versus excessive individualism. I wish the two countries would learn from each other and enjoy a little more balance. I found this video inspiring and I’m so impressed that you followed your heart towards a life that makes *you* happy. That way, you can bring more of that happiness to others, as you have done. Somehow, your rejection of collectivism makes you *more* valuable to the collective, i.e. all the other people around you. You could not contribute so much if you were trapped in a miserable job, or a miserable life. Jīa yóu!!!

I’m an expat living in China for 7 years already… What you’ve said about the mindset here is spot on. It is so difficult to have ‘normal’ conversations with my Chinese friends. I find that my conversations are all so shallow and meaningless and so nationalistic to the point that I prefer to just stick to meaningless simple conversations. Yet it remains an extremely convenient place to live - I love wechat and taobao and that’s prob the only reason I haven’t left yet 😂

Yet just as in China there are people who can discuss rationally and yet still be patriotic, so too there are Americans. Of course it could be that my conversation is shallow and meaningless to them so that is how they respond.

我很喜欢这个视频!我在中国住了还有学习汉语一年, 然后我明白大部分,我很开心!请问拍更多类似的视频! I am Canadian, and have lived and traveled in many countries. I understand your frustrations with China, as I have experienced a lot of them living here for the past year. However, I am so glad to have the chance to live this experience - as China is so closed off from the rest of the world, I've had the chance to face my own prejudices, learn about a beautiful culture and lifestyle. As for the closed-mindedness, while it may be exaggerated in China because of the restricted internet access, I've found that trait in every country. Things are changing as many Chinese young adults are studying abroad and bringing their experiences back. Funny thing about the “你应该。。。” though - it's a common source of tension between me and my Chinese friends/boyfriend... but I realized they don't actually want to tell me what do, but it's a way of showing they care. But independent, 28-year old me doesn't want people telling me to button up my sweater! LOL

So true. I have found its like this in every country I've lived (Germany, Netherlands, Spain) incl home country Australia. Seems like no matter where you're from there's always Conservative people (normally nationalist to some degree) who close themself off from the world and purposefully don't want to interact with people from anywhere else or that look different or speak different to them. Even the ones that aren't overt bigots still think their country is the centre of the world and everyone else is alien. But the world becomes more international everyday, at least I feel like younger generations feel that way (Internet generation), so these people will be left behind culturally in a way. I got hope for the future.

Thank you for this video! I feel that frustrations you have with your country are the same frustrations a lot of people have with the country they were born in and spent most of their lives in. Time and familiarity breeds a kind of boredom and restlessness for some people (while for others, it's comfort and a reason to stay put). It's a necessary thing for the world to move around.
@aoikemono6414
@aoikemono6414 Год назад
Sounds more like she hates the social order, and not because it's too "familiar". If it wasn't for the internet and western media, most of China would not know how conservative and repressed their beliefs and lives are. China is a huge place, and no one can truly be bored with it or too familiar with anything, in theory. It's the government itself, in it's effort to control everything and make a singular state, has turned everything homogenous and "boring".

@@aoikemono6414 Well, she liked my comment, so I can't be completely wrong 🤷🏻‍♀️ China is certainly neither conservative nor repressed lol I'm Canadian and people move around or live in other countries all the time. I agree with you. I have lived in quite a few countries in my adult life and they all got their issues and their more positive aspects. I have learned that I feel more comfortable in some countries than in others. I also think that as you said, for some people the stability of living in their hometown with their people is very precious, I would actually say that the majority of people would rather stay in their homecountry or even hometown, while some others are explorers and we need the space to move around, to explore and to find out our way in the world. Having some distance from family and the place you were born can bring some of that freedom as the expectations of what you should do or be like are removed.

Honestly, some of the reasons that you mentioned are exactly why I want to leave my country too. Most people in my country are closed minded too and the society always want to boss around like, you shouldn't do this you should do that, get married early, do not dream, only work because apparently for them that's the best life...study hard and work. And I don't want to live like this. I am currently 22 as well. I want to explore and learn new things and do what I love in life and meet new people from every walk of life and experience new things. That's something really wonderful to me. Doesn't mean that I hate my country, I just hate this close mindedness of the society. I loved this video. Instantly subscribed 😁. Love and support from my side ❤️

I really like your story and reasons for leaving China. However, have been teaching different languages in China at a university for eight years. Teaching is tightly controlled everywhere and every university has special monitors. As a foreigner I have been especially ‘supervised’, but I don’t care. I love to teach and only teach languages, not ideology. Your teaching is excellent and your style most certainly is very different from the boiler plate approach so prevalent in China.

I'm a US citizen, my son lives in Shanghai, and I've visited China 4 times in the past 10 years. I've been to many places in China, including 3 times to Liaoning province where I have friends, not a place many foreigners visit. I really enjoy traveling in China, I've only had good experiences with Chinese people, and if there are prejudices against foreigners I haven't noticed them. I think it's very important for Westerners and Chinese people to experience each other's countries, so that we can learn that despite the differences in culture, we have a lot in common. Thanks for this video, I understood a lot (though not everything, I'm still very much learning).

Your story is inspiring. My Chinese teachers in college exposed us to "real life" Chinese for listening; announcements over the loudspeaker in a crowded train station or airport, advertisements on the radio... listening to you made me realize just how intensive my language training in Chinese was because they spoke to us 95% of the time in Chinese at the same speed they would speak at home. I had Taiwanese teachers, teachers from Beijing, from Shanghai and from Lanzhou. So even though I've done no focused listening in Chinese for the last 12 years or so, I understood probably 65% or more of your story without looking at the subtitles. =) I just can't read anymore, and I have to think a lot longer before trying to speak Chinese anymore. I forget common words I could easily use in conversation after graduation. =( I really hope you are thriving here as a Chinese language teacher. Thank you for sharing your story!
