Doesn’t matter just get the money and leave! These engineers seem to hold an over hyped ego that they can save the world hiding behind the laptop screens! How about Zelenskyy who is leading the county up front with the risk of death? That alone is worth millions more than those technical engineers being keyboard warriors

Thanks for posting this. Also important to what you’re speaking about: is knowing when something isn’t right, and when to walk away. A lot of advice online is to “stick” it out; that “everyone” is unhappy in a new job “at first”.... but it’s just as important to trust your gut, know yourself, and be honest about your situation and your ability to thrive in your new job. It’s only a mistake if you don’t learn from it, and life is too short! We spend so much time at work and deserve to be happy. Thanks again!

Really appreciate this video and honesty! The image of "success" in UX is often portrayed as working for big companies like Facebook... I've struggled with that idea as someone who likes to succeed, but also values family-like communities within a company. Thank you for this transparency. Puts a lot in perspective!
@diogofarias1822

The bigger the company gets, the harder it is to keep "family-like" values, and it turns to be more like a military hierarchical structure.

What you described seems to be a norm in a corporate world. Working for a startup or a small growing company might be much more rewarding on so many levels: more opportunities to contribute (and be appreciated for that) as well as to learn from others (usually amazing people).

Seems like culture at FB has now become similar to a global corporate than a start up despite its efforts to keep it energetic. It is just the normal trajectory of growth for big companies.

I’m a female designer and I’ve worked in small agencies. I’ve experienced masses amounts of issues with men within agencies like sexual harassment, mental abuse etc. Now I work for a big company and they are some of the most supportive people I’ve met. I feel like I’m finally where I belong and women there are treated equally and are shown the upmost respect. I’m just dead happy that I wake up everyday knowing I have a supportive team around me.

I thought he was a nice chatty guy who was interested in my life but apparently he went round all the men in the office on my first day and asked them if they'd hook up with me if they could. That hits close to home: being surrounded by experienced team members who do things quickly so they get the high impact work. Yes, it is not a business's job to train me but it is mutually beneficial for me to be on a path where eventually I can be that person too. It's hard for that to happen when deadlines are always tight and priorities frequently change.

@jdm4087 3 года назад
@@typicalbits I'm not a designer, but am at Facebook. Keep in mind that big companies like Facebook, Google, etc are big and highly desired for a reason. They get thousands of applications a week, and they're able to cherry pick the best of the best. Not saying it's impossible, but it's highly unlikely a Hiring Manager will want to hire someone that is fresh out of school with little to no job experience. And depending on the position, have little to no side projects (personal and/or school) to help them. Not trying to be negative, but it's reality. Just focus on building experience, and then apply or get a referral some years later. These companies will still be here in the future anyways.

Honestly, don't be afraid to put a higher price on your packages because you're giving away GOLD. WOW! This is such a genuine and to-the-point video from a young professional. I am an HR and I wanna tell you that what you have described is very typical to large organizations. Also, managers won't let inexperienced candidates express their wishes nor add a blueprint to the whole work just because you are a promising employee that hasn't proved anything yet. Working for such big corporations requires certain types of employees to thrive there and it will save a lot of time thinking over what possibly went wrong and should an employee regret leaving such a "fantastic" company is to remember ONE SIZE DOESN"T FIT all. It's great you realized it just after 3 months and your previous employer was happy to have you back. This is rare! Looking 4ward to your next videos, I share your vision. By the way, talking to HRBPs is not the best decision when you need help with your new job. in 90% of the time (unless there's NO obvious breach of law), they won't side with you. Rather, they will work on getting rid of employees who don't share corporations' values from the beginning in the safest way to avoid legal risks.

I find it very useful advice not to talk to company's HRBP in case you are having doubts about your current job or you are not on the same page with company's values or practices. Many people should be reminded that internal HR unit is about keeping order in the company and avoiding legal troubles, not helping individual employees.

This is so spot on! I am still looking for UX work, but coming from other professions, I cannot stay loyal to any company that is not loyal to me. I think some people expect an unquestioning loyalty to a place despite it not being the best environment for them. Like, why would you leave?!?!? I think some places work for other personalities of course, but there is nothing like a company that has your back and relationships that are healthy before, during, and after the job are what I strive for! To be in a place where you could go back, feel heard, safe, trusted, is so amazing as well!

I totally understand what you mean with the growth and valuation aspect in a smaller company or startup. That's also why I'm not sure if I can work in a non-startupy company ever again 😅... I'm not a designer but a developer and work closely with product, design and marketing - and it's that mix that I really like and I was allowed to kinda grow into. In a startup you're usually just more integrated in the whole process and able to learn new things outside the skill you may have been hired for. Whereas in a big company with major hierarchies it's really hard to grow or be valued if you're more of a generalist or want to evolve some new skills outside of your job description. Kinda sad, but I guess it just depends on what type you are and where you feel more at home.

Good summary! Glad you called out "The Social Dilemma" but... definitely recommend looking up "The Age of Surveillance Capitalism." I wonder if designers might see UX's role of keeping users active/engaged while FB figures out how to manufacture new products/experiences from all the (seemingly throwaway) data they swipe from users and their networks. We're all just disposable compared to their social, political and economic aims. They want power and no-one to stop them. Loved that you caught on quickly and found a path out!

could you please share some of the questions you asked recruiters or team leaders to figure out if they care about their employees? It will be very helpful

Its nice to see how supportive your viewers are. If only people were like this in real life. Where I'm from, if someone announces that they left a big company, people give this ugly look 🤨. Everyone starts asking nosy questions to find out if you actually got fired. Perhaps my exposure to such cynics is why I slightly doubt your story. To have a big RU-vid channel and say, "I got fired from Facebook" requires a lot of courage. Perhaps you truly did leave it for the reasons you mentioned. Anyways, all the best for your next ventures. 👍

I totally can relate to your experience. I was laid off from a start-up that I was with for over 5years. The company I work for explain that it was due to the Covid-19. Actually, many of my fellow co-workers were hired back. But through the years with this company, I felt unappreciated.

“When you put anything on a pedestal in your life it’s very easy to lose sight of the bigger picture and you end up chasing after things that don’t serve you nor align with your values”.. Great advice! Thanks so much for sharing!

I could 100% relate to this video! I also joined a really great company in July 2020. Because it was all virtual, I didn't feel as emotionally connected to my team. The priority and major decisions were all taken by others and I as a designer didn't have much say in it. No female colleagues in leadership positions that I could look up to or learn from. Since we're working from home, it felt like I was just a robotic machine working 12hrs a day and yet not creating any impact. Needless to say, my motivation and mental health took a dip and I too called it quits. 🙈
